Response of a PWR core loaded with Combined Non-Fertile and UO2 (CONFU) fuel assemblies to control rod ejection accident was evaluated. A number of core arrangements and TRU fuel compositions were considered and the results were compared with the performance of a reference all-UO2 core. The comparison was based on the results of a simple point kinetics model with thermal reactivity feedbacks and temperature dependant materials properties. The reactivity coefficients and core average kinetics parameters were obtained from the full core 3D neutronic simulations. The results show that application of the CONFU assembly concept causes only minor deviation of fuel performance characteristics in reactivity initiated accidents. This is a consequence of relatively small loadings of TRU in the CONFU assembly and therefore dominating role of conventional UO2 fuel in the neutronic performance of the core.

A sensitivity study has been conducted to assess the robustness of the conclusions presented in the MIT Fuel Cycle Study. The Once Through Cycle (OTC) is considered as the base-line case, while advanced technologies with fuel recycling characterize the alternative fuel cycles. The options include limited recycling in LWRs and full recycling in fast reactors and in high conversion LWRs. Fast reactor technologies studied include both oxide and metal fueled reactors. The analysis allowed optimization of the fast reactor conversion ratio with respect to desired fuel cycle performance characteristics. The following parameters were found to significantly affect the performance of recycling technologies and their penetration over time: Capacity Factors of the fuel cycle facilities, Spent Fuel Cooling Time, Thermal Reprocessing Introduction Date, and incore and Out-of-core TRU Inventory Requirements for recycling technology. An optimization scheme of the nuclear fuel cycle is proposed. Optimization criteria and metrics of interest for different stakeholders in the fuel cycle (economics, waste management, environmental impact, etc.) are utilized for two different optimization techniques (linear and stochastic). Preliminary results covering single and multi-variable and single and multi-objective optimization demonstrate the viability of the optimization scheme.

This paper presents the neutronic design of a liquid salt cooled fast reactor with flexible conversion ratio. The main objective of the design is to accommodate interchangeably within the same reactor core alternative transuranic actinides management strategies ranging from pure burning to self-sustainable breeding. Two, the most limiting, core design options with unity and zero conversion ratios are described. Ternary, NaCl-KCl-MgCl2 salt was chosen as a coolant after a rigorous screening process, due to a combination of favourable neutronic and heat transport properties. Large positive coolant temperature reactivity coefficient was identified as the most significant design challenge. A wide range of strategies aiming at the reduction of the coolant temperature coefficient to assure self-controllability of the core in the most limiting unprotected accidents were explored. However, none of the strategies resulted in sufficient reduction of the coolant temperature coefficient without significantly compromising the core performance characteristics such as power density or cycle length. Therefore, reactivity control devices known as lithium thermal expansion modules were employed instead. This allowed achieving all the design goals for both zero and unity conversion ratio cores. The neutronic feasibility of both designs was demonstrated through calculation of reactivity control and fuel loading requirements, fluence limits, power peaking factors, and reactivity feedback coefficients. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. The narrow stripe selective growth of the InGaAlAs bulk waveguides and InGaAlAs MQW waveguides was first investigated. Flat and clear interfaces were obtained for the selectively grown InGaAlAs waveguides under optimized growth conditions. These selectively grown InGaAlAs waveguides were covered by specific InP layers, which can keep the waveguides from being oxidized during the fabrication of devices. PL peak wavelength shifts of 70 nm for the InGaAlAs bulk waveguides and 73 nm for the InGaAlAs MQW waveguides were obtained with a small mask stripe width varying from 0 to 40 gm, and were interpreted in considering both the migration effect from the masked region (MMR) and the lateral vapor diffusion effect (LVD). The quality of the selectively grown InGaAlAs MQW waveguides was confirmed by the PL peak intensity and the PL FWHM. Using the narrow stripe selectively grown InGaAlAs MQW waveguides, then the buried heterostructure (BH) lasers were fabricated by a developed unselective regrowth method, instead of conventional selective regrowth. The InGaAlAs MQW BH lasers exhibit good performance characteristics, with a high internal differential quantum efficiency of about 85% and an internal loss of 6.7 cm(-1).

OH、-CH2- or CH 、C-O-H or C-O-C等多糖特征基团;多糖提取物核磁共振1H d4.3~5.9之间出现强吸收峰,这是1H中,多糖存在的明显证据,1H NMR中,其中O-乙酰基的甲基上的氢信号为d1.1~1.3之间。 A group of mixed autotrophic ammonia oxidizing populations, having much biological characteristic tested by concerned personnel for pilot test: Performed rapid population growth and obtained high biomass in inorganic environment; Not only maintained a high rate of ammoxidation, promoted a wealth of heterotrophic microbial populations growth in a totally inorganic and autotrophic growth environment; Placed in heterotrophic and anaerobic environment, had the performance characteristics that could rapidly produce hydrogen. For such a special ecological system, Study its symbiotic mechanism and the connection between these populations of carbon and energy issues, will have a very important significance. We intended from the characteristics of the population, the secretion product of cell surface, free substance in the liquid medium like polysaccharide, protein and fatty acids carrying out research. Part I: The basic features of mixed autotrophic ammonia oxidizing populations . Use inorganic liquid medium, processed study for ammonia oxidation characteristics of the population; we used scanning electron microscopy to get micro-features of autotrophic ammonia oxidizing populations .The medium was carried out settlement and centrifugal then removed the microbial populations, after all of that we analysis the water phase for total organic carbon(TOC), carbohydrate and other substances; Solid ammonia oxidizing medium was adopted to separation and purification of population, DGGE means was for structure analysis of microbial population. The results showed that after the inoculum of bacteria (2 / 5000 (V / V)), ammonia in the culture medium (200 mg / L) was rapid degradation in 3-5 days; ammonia and nitrite have the negative correlation between changes in the trend, then only a small amount of nitrate content (<30mg / L). The biomass growth of ammoxidation population in line with the trend of ammonia oxidation, the initial volume of it was 7.75 mg / L (protein content), in 3-5 days upto 63.06 mg / L (protein content). Electron microscope image showed, the populations were wrapped in a layer of mucus, including the a large number ruptted micorbe , Centrifuge to remove bacteria, then detected the medium for total organic carbon and sugar content, result took on the same characteristics with biomass growth, that were from the initial 3.73、2.35 mg / L respectively, in 3-6 days achieved rapid increase in the maximum to 35.19、27.45 mg / L respectively. After initial separation、 purification ,then processed sequencing to strains purified and got the result that there were 10 heterotrophic microorganisms : Brucella Branch pale bacillus, Cellu lomonas, Bacillus species category, a Flavobacterium, colorless Bacteria, Aeromonas sheath fat, little support maltophilia Aeromonas, macrophages species hydrogen, sulphur-MI, Pseudomonas bacteria spores; DGGE display, there were 20 separation bands approximately. Part II: Mixed populations that autotrophic - heterotrophic bacteria symbiotic mechanism. On the basis of preliminary analysis of microbial population characteristics, aiming at extracellular carbohydrate components might be decomposition by microbial, we focused on microbial cell protein and carbohydrate analysis. Using ultrasound combined with RIPA lysis cracking the cells, SDS-PAGE electrophoresis analysis the total protein species of the population, and through the amino acid analyzer studied the compositions of amino acid and infrared spectroscopy analysis of a protein infrared characteristics. The extraction of sugar analysis included: UV scanning, IR, NMR, single-sugar composition analysis. SDS-PAGE analysis showed that: 42 kD protein expression was very high at different growth stages of mixed autotrophic ammonia oxidizing populations , on the fourth day, 42 kD protein expression had been very strong, 4-7d, it had continued this excessive expression, then started to weaken after 7 days. 42 kD protein that might be closely associated with ammonia oxidation. Infrared spectral analysis showed that: cell extracts with the characteristic that the peak distribution in 3427.42 cm-1、1718.18 cm-1 and 1681.72 cm-1、1160.07 cm-1 and 1086.74 cm-1 corresponding to OH、C = O、C-O-C Groups which had the typical characteristics of protein; and analysis showed that amino acids including Gly, Asp, Ala, Glu ,the content in the protein is relatively high. Exopolysaccharide in the extracts had the separation map that it was uneven, received a total of six collection peaks by the detection mode of phenol-sulphruic acid method ; ultraviolet scan in the 201-213 nm department had polysaccharide absorbing peak, the same ingredients that polysaccharide heterogeneity; infrared polysaccharide spectral characteristics of the main peak at 3400.49 cm-1, 2920.28 cm-1, 1154.54 and 1087.52 cm-1, corresponding OH,-CH2-or CH, C-O-H or C-O-C;and other characteristics of polysaccharide group; 1H NMR of polysaccharide extract appeared absorption peak between d4.3 ~5.9, which is the apparent evidence of polysaccharide, In 1H NMR, the hydrogen signal of one of O-acetyl was between 1.1 to 1.3. The determination of Sugar oxime whole benzoate derivatives by HPLC, there was a single-sugar peak, as a matter of time, yet more in-depth test. Summary: Mixed autotrophic ammonia oxidizing populations show us that it had the ability in ammonia oxidizing and it was great, organic matter and biomass increased significantly in the process of ammonia oxidation. Microbial populations was wrapped up slime layer, the phenomenon of cell breakdown obviously, and there were a lot of separation and purification of the heterotrophic bacteria; a lot of organic matter (including polysaccharides)remined in the medium that removal of cell indicated the inorganic system existed secondary carbon sources that could be used by the heterotrophic bacteria ; there were a large number proteins bands of cell extract, rich variety; cell extracts of polysaccharide had obvious characteristics of polysaccharide, and the existence evidence of single-sugar. Combined population of microscopic characteristics and free of organic matter in the test results, we believe that the health of inorganic system, population growth occurred in the course of the breakdown of the phenomenon is likely to lead to a lot of protein and polysaccharide released into the extracellular free, And other heterotrophic bacteria use them to the growth as carbon and nitrogen. This may be autotrophic system, the large number of heterotrophic bacteria symbiotic mechanism.

The chelates formed between the heavy metal ion Pb(II) and the reagents 8-hydroxy-5-quinolinesulphonic acid, 8-hydroxy-7-quinolinesulphonic acid and 8-hydroxy-7-iodo-5-quinolinesulphonic acid exhibit strong room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) if retained on the surface of anion exchange resin beads. Based on the on-line formation, in a flow-injection system, of such RTP lead chelates and their transient immobilization on an anion exchange resin, three flow-through optosensing systems are investigated for lead in sea water. Optimum experimental conditions and the analytical performance characteristics of the three optosensors are discussed. Relative standard deviations (RSDs) of the order of 3% are typical at 100 ng ml−1 Pb(II) and the active sensing phases can easily be regenerated by passing 500 μl of 6 M hydrochloric acid. A lead(II) detection limit of 0.1 ng ml−1 (3×background SD, for 2 ml sample injection volumes) was achieved for the optosensor based on 8-hydroxy-7-quinolinesulphonic acid. Possible interferences present in sea water, including cations and anions which could affect the sensor response, are discussed in detail. Finally, the selected RTP flow-through optical sensor has been successfully tested for the determination of lead in sea water at a few ng ml−1.

The relationship between the performance characteristics of organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) with 2,5-bis(4-biphenylyl)-bithiophene/copper hexadecafluorophthalocyanine (BP2T/F16CuPc) heterojunctions and the thickness of the BP2T bottom layer is investigated. Three operating modes (n-channel, ambipolar, and p-channel) are obtained by varying the thickness of the organic semiconductor layer. The changes in operating mode are attributable to the morphology of the film and the hetero-junction effect, which also leads to an evolution of the field-effect mobility with increasing film thickness. In BP2T/F16CuPc heterojunctions the mobile charge carriers accumulate at both sides of the heterojunction interface, with an accumulation layer thickness of ca. 10 nm. High field-effect mobility values can be achieved in continuous and flat films that exhibit the heterojunction effect.

An on-chip disk electrode based on sol-gel-derived carbon composite material could be easily and reproducibly fabricated. Unlike other carbon-based electrodes reported previously, this detector is rigid, convenient to fabricate, and amenable to chemical modifications. Based on the stable and reproducible characters of this detector, a copper particle-modified detector was developed for the detection of carbohydrates which extends the application of the carbon-based electrode. In our experiments, the performance of the new integrated detector for rapid on-chip measurement of epinephrine and glucose was illustrated. Experimental procedures including the fabrication of this detector, the configuration of separation channel outlet and electrode verge, and the performance characteristics of this new electrochemical detector were investigated.

The electrochemical polymerization of amino-derivatives of naphthalene has been studied on the platinum wire electrodes. The effects of acidity of the modifying media and the potential scan rate on the cyclic voltammograms are verified. As potentiometric pH sensors, the electrodes prepared from 1-naphthylamine and 2,3-diaminonaphthalene showed performance characteristics superior to some other electrodes tested. The electrode modified with 1-naphthylamine in the optimum medium showed a nearly Nernstian response of 4.20-13.70 pH and a slope of -54.8 mV/pH, while the linear range of the electrode prepared by 2,3-diaminonaphthalene was 4.00-13.60 pH, with a slope of -52.4 mV/pH.

As the World Wide Web (Web) is increasingly adopted as the infrastructure for large-scale distributed information systems, issues of performance modeling become ever more critical. In particular, locality of reference is an important property in the performance modeling of distributed information systems. In the case of the Web, understanding the nature of reference locality will help improve the design of middleware, such as caching, prefetching, and document dissemination systems. For example, good measurements of reference locality would allow us to generate synthetic reference streams with accurate performance characteristics, would allow us to compare empirically measured streams to explain differences, and would allow us to predict expected performance for system design and capacity planning. In this paper we propose models for both temporal and spatial locality of reference in streams of requests arriving at Web servers. We show that simple models based only on document popularity (likelihood of reference) are insufficient for capturing either temporal or spatial locality. Instead, we rely on an equivalent, but numerical, representation of a reference stream: a stack distance trace. We show that temporal locality can be characterized by the marginal distribution of the stack distance trace, and we propose models for typical distributions and compare their cache performance to our traces. We also show that spatial locality in a reference stream can be characterized using the notion of self-similarity. Self-similarity describes long-range correlations in the dataset, which is a property that previous researchers have found hard to incorporate into synthetic reference strings. We show that stack distance strings appear to be strongly self-similar, and we provide measurements of the degree of self-similarity in our traces. Finally, we discuss methods for generating synthetic Web traces that exhibit the properties of temporal and spatial locality that we measured in our data.

In an outsourced database system the data owner publishes information through a number of remote, untrusted servers with the goal of enabling clients to access and query the data more efficiently. As clients cannot trust servers, query authentication is an essential component in any outsourced database system. Clients should be given the capability to verify that the answers provided by the servers are correct with respect to the actual data published by the owner. While existing work provides authentication techniques for selection and projection queries, there is a lack of techniques for authenticating aggregation queries. This article introduces the first known authenticated index structures for aggregation queries. First, we design an index that features good performance characteristics for static environments, where few or no updates occur to the data. Then, we extend these ideas and propose more involved structures for the dynamic case, where the database owner is allowed to update the data arbitrarily. Our structures feature excellent average case performance for authenticating queries with multiple aggregate attributes and multiple selection predicates. We also implement working prototypes of the proposed techniques and experimentally validate the correctness of our ideas.

In this thesis a novel transmission format, named Coherent Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CoWDM) for use in high information spectral density optical communication networks is proposed and studied. In chapter I a historical view of fibre optic communication systems as well as an overview of state of the art technology is presented to provide an introduction to the subject area. We see that, in general the aim of modern optical communication system designers is to provide high bandwidth services while reducing the overall cost per transmitted bit of information. In the remainder of the thesis a range of investigations, both of a theoretical and experimental nature are carried out using the CoWDM transmission format. These investigations are designed to consider features of CoWDM such as its dispersion tolerance, compatibility with forward error correction and suitability for use in currently installed long haul networks amongst others. A high bit rate optical test bed constructed at the Tyndall National Institute facilitated most of the experimental work outlined in this thesis and a collaboration with France Telecom enabled long haul transmission experiments using the CoWDM format to be carried out. An amount of research was also carried out on ancillary topics such as optical comb generation, forward error correction and phase stabilisation techniques. The aim of these investigations is to verify the suitability of CoWDM as a cost effective solution for use in both current and future high bit rate optical communication networks

Avalanche Photodiodes (APDs) have been used in a wide range of low light sensing applications such as DNA sequencing, quantum key distribution, LIDAR and medical imaging. To operate the APDs, control circuits are required to achieve the desired performance characteristics. This thesis presents the work on development of three control circuits including a bias circuit, an active quench and reset circuit and a gain control circuit all of which are used for control and performance enhancement of the APDs. The bias circuit designed is used to bias planar APDs for operation in both linear and Geiger modes. The circuit is based on a dual charge pumps configuration and operates from a 5 V supply. It is capable of providing milliamp load currents for shallow-junction planar APDs that operate up to 40 V. With novel voltage regulators, the bias voltage provided by the circuit can be accurately controlled and easily adjusted by the end user. The circuit is highly integrable and provides an attractive solution for applications requiring a compact integrated APD device. The active quench and reset circuit is designed for APDs that operate in Geiger-mode and are required for photon counting. The circuit enables linear changes in the hold-off time of the Geiger-mode APD (GM-APD) from several nanoseconds to microseconds with a stable setting step of 6.5 ns. This facilitates setting the optimal `afterpulse-free' hold-off time for any GM-APD via user-controlled digital inputs. In addition this circuit doesn’t require an additional monostable or pulse generator to reset the detector, thus simplifying the circuit. Compared to existing solutions, this circuit provides more accurate and simpler control of the hold-off time while maintaining a comparable maximum count-rate of 35.2 Mcounts/s. The third circuit designed is a gain control circuit. This circuit is based on the idea of using two matched APDs to set and stabilize the gain. The circuit can provide high bias voltage for operating the planar APD, precisely set the APD’s gain (with the errors of less than 3%) and compensate for the changes in the temperature to maintain a more stable gain. The circuit operates without the need for external temperature sensing and control electronics thus lowering the system cost and complexity. It also provides a simpler and more compact solution compared to previous designs. The three circuits designed in this project were developed independently of each other and are used for improving different performance characteristics of the APD. Further research on the combination of the three circuits will produce a more compact APD-based solution for a wide range of applications.

The design and development of a comprehensive computational model of a copper stockpile leach process is summarized. The computational fluid dynamic software framework PHYSICA+ and various phenomena were used to model transport phenomena, mineral reaction kinetics, bacterial effects, and heat, energy and acid balances for the overall leach process. In this paper, the performance of the model is investigated, in particular its sensitvity to particle size and ore permeability. A combination of literature and laboratory sources was used to parameterize the model. The simulation results from the leach model are compared with closely controlled column pilot scale tests. The main performance characteristics (e.g. copper recovery rate) predicted by the model compare reasonably well with the experimental data and clearly reflect the qualitiative behavior of the process in many respects. The model is used to provide a measure of the sensitivity of ore permeability on leach behavior, and simulation results are examined for several different particle size distributions.

A research element of the European Union (EU) sixth Framework project BioCop focused on the development of a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor assay for the detection of paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) toxins in shellfish as an alternative to the increasingly ethically unacceptable mouse bioassay. A biosensor assay was developed using both a saxitoxin binding protein and chip surface in tandem with a highly efficient simple extraction procedure. The present report describes the single laboratory validation of this immunological screening method, for this complex group of toxins with differing toxicities, according to the European Decision 2002/657/EC in conjunction with IUPAC and AOAC single laboratory validation guidelines. The different performance characteristics (detection capability CC beta, specificity/selectivity, repeatability, reproducibility, stability, and applicability) were determined in relation to the EU regulatory limit of 800 mu g of saxitoxin equivalents (STX eq) per kg of shellfish meat. The detection capability CC beta was calculated to be 120 mu g/kg. Intra-assay repeatability was found to be between 2.5 and 12.3% and interassay reproducibility was between 6.1 and 15.2% for different shellfish matrices. Natural samples were also evaluated and the resultant data displayed overall agreements of 96 and 92% with that of the existing AOAC approved methods of mouse bioassay (MBA) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), respectively.
