Global standard for the composition of infant formula: Recommendations of an ESPGHAN coordinated international expert group

The Codex Alimentarius Commission of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) develops food standards, guidelines and related texts for protecting consumer health and ensuring fair trade practices globally. The major part of the world's population lives in more than 160 countries that are members of the Codex Alimentarius. The Codex Standard on Infant Formula was adopted in 1981 based on scientific knowledge available in the 1970s and is currently being revised. As part of this process, the Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses asked the ESPGHAN Committee on Nutrition to initiate a consultation process with the international scientific community to provide a proposal on nutrient levels in infant formulae, based on scientific analysis and taking into account existing scientific reports on the subject. ESPGHAN accepted the request and, in collaboration with its sister societies in the Federation of International Societies on Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, invited highly qualified experts in the area of infant nutrition to form an International Expert Group (IEG) to review the issues raised. The group arrived at recommendations on the compositional requirements for a global infant formula standard which are reported here.

An asymmetric homodinuclear complex containing the mu-x-oxobis(mu-x-carboxylato)diruthenium(III) core: X-ray structure of [Ru20(o2ec6H4-p-OMe)3(en) (PPh3)2] (C104)" 3CHC13

Asymmetric tri-bridged diruthenium(III) complexes, [Ru2O(O(2)CR)(3)(en) (PPh(3))(2)](ClO4) (R = C6H4-p-X: X = OMe (1a), Me (1b); en=1,2-diaminoethane), were prepared and structurally characterized. Complex 1a 3CHCl(3), crystallizes in the triclinic space group P (1) over bar with a = 14.029(5), b = 14.205(5), c = 20.610(6) Angstrom, alpha= 107.26(3), beta = 101.84(3), gamma= 97.57(3)degrees, V= 3756(2) Angstrom(3) and Z = 2. The complex has an {Ru-2(mu-O)(mu-O(2)CR)(2)(2+)} core and exhibits [O4PRu(mu-O)RuPO2N2](+) coordination environments for the metal centers. The novel structural feature is the asymmetric arrangement of ligands at the terminal sites of the core which shows an Ru... Ru separation of 3.226(3) Angstrom and an Ru-O-Ru angle of 119.2(5)degrees. An intense visible band observed near 570 nm is assigned to a charge transfer transition involving the d pi-Ru(III) and p pi-mu-O Orbitals. Cyclic voltammetry of the complexes displays a reversible Ru-2(III,III) reversible arrow Ru-2(III,IV) couple near 0.8 V (versus SCE) in MeCN-0.1 M TBAP.

Axial binding of 2-methylimidazole to the tetraarylcarboxylatodiruthenium (II, III) core: X-ray crystal structure of [Ru-2(O2CC6H4-p-OMe)(4)(2-mimH)(2)](ClO4). 1.75CH(2)Cl(2).H2O

Diruthenium (II. III) complexes of the type [Ru-2(O2CAr)(4) (2-mimH)(2)](ClO4) (Ar = C6H4-p-X : X=OMe,1, X=Me, 2, 2-mimH=2-methylimidazole) have been isolated from the reaction of Ru2Cl(O2CAr)(4) with 2-mimH in CH2Cl2 followed by the addition of NaClO4. The crystal structure of 1.1.75CH(2)Cl(2).H2O has been determined. The crystal belongs to the monoclinic space group p2(1)/c with the following unit cell dimensions for the C40H40N4O16ClRu2.1.75CH(2)Cl(2).H2O (M = 1237.0) : a = 12.347(3)Angstrom, b = 17.615(5)Angstrom, c = 26.148(2)Angstrom,beta = 92.88(1)degrees. v = 5679(2)Angstrom(3). Z=4, D-c = 1.45 g cm(-3). lambda(Mo-K-alpha) = 0.7107 Angstrom, mu(Mo-K-alpha) = 8.1 cm(-1), T = 293 K, R = 0.0815 (wR(2) = 0.2118) for 5834 reflections with 1 > 2 sigma(I). The complex has a tetracarboxylatodiruthenium (II, III) core and two axially bound 2-methylimidazole ligands. The Ru-Ru bond length is 2.290(1)Angstrom. The Ru-Ru bond order is 2.5 and the complex is three-electron paramagnetic. The complex shows an irreversible Ru-2(II,III)-->Ru-2(Il,II) reduction near -0.2 V vs SCE in CH2Cl2-0. 1 MTBAP. The complexes exemplify the first adduct of the tetracarboxylatodiruthenium (II,III) core having N-donor ligands

New main group ligands for complexation with transition and inner transition elements

Symmetrical and unsymmetrical diphosphinoamines of the type X(2)PN(R)PX(2) and X(2)PN(R)YY' offer vast scope for the synthesis of a variety of transition metal organometallic complexes. Diphosphinoamines can be converted into their dioxides which are also accessible from appropriate (chloro)phosphane oxide precursors. The diphosphazane dioxides form an interesting series of complexes with lanthanide and actinide elements. Structural and spectroscopic studies have been carried out on a wide range of transition metal complexes incorporating linear P-N-P ligands and judiciously functionalized cyclophosphazanes and cyclo-phosphazenes.

Analysis of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 drug resistance in children receiving nucleoside analogue reverse-transcriptase inhibitors plus nevirapine, nelfinavir, or ritonavir (Pediatric AIDS Clinical Trials Group 377)

In Pediatric AIDS Clinical Trials Group 377, antiretroviral therapy-experienced children were randomized to 4 treatment arms that included different combinations of stavudine, lamivudine (3TC), nevirapine (Nvp), nelfinavir (Nfv), and ritonavir (Rtv). Previous treatment with zidovudine (Zdv), didanosine (ddI), or zalcitabine (ddC) was acceptable. Drug resistance ((R)) mutations were assessed before study treatment (baseline) and at virologic failure. Zdv(R), ddI(R), and ddC(R) mutations were detected frequently at baseline but were not associated with virologic failure. Children with drug resistance mutations at baseline had greater reductions in virus load over time than did children who did not. Nvp(R) and 3TC(R) mutations were detected frequently at virologic failure, and Nvp(R) mutations were more common among children receiving 3-drug versus 4-drug Nvp-containing regimens. Children who were maintained on their study regimen after virologic failure accumulated additional Nvp(R) and 3TC(R) mutations plus Rtv(R) and Nfv(R) mutations. However, Rtv(R) and Nfv(R) mutations were detected at unexpectedly low rates.

Towards the development of a Cavendish banana resistant to race 4 of fusarium wilt: gamma irradiation of micropropagated Dwarf Parfitt (Musa spp., AAA group, Cavendish subgroup)

'Dwarf parfitt', an extra-dwarf Cavendish cultivar with resistance to subtropical race 4 fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense 9Foc), was gamma irradiated at a dose of 20 Gy and putative mutants were recovered with improved agronomic characteristics. Further screening of putative mutants for improved yield and fruit size, as well as a degree of resistence to fusarium wilt, led to the selection of a line (DPM25) with improved productivity when grown on soils infested with subtropical race 4 Foc. DPM25 was equal to the industry standard, 'Williams', in every agronomic trait measured and it consistently showed a lower incidence of fusarium wilt. Further improvement of field resistance to race 4 Foc is needed in DPM25 and further cycles of mutation induction and selction is an option discussed.

Gauge theory of a group of diffeomorphisms. I. General principles

Any (N+M)-parameter Lie group G with an N-parameter subgroup H can be realized as a global group of diffeomorphisms on an M-dimensional base space B, with representations in terms of transformation laws of fields on B belonging to linear representations of H. The gauged generalization of the global diffeomorphisms consists of general diffeomorphisms (or coordinate transformations) on a base space together with a local action of H on the fields. The particular applications of the scheme to space-time symmetries is discussed in terms of Lagrangians, field equations, currents, and source identities. The objective of my dissertation Pull (or Draught, or Moves) at the Parnassus , is to provide a deeper understanding of Nordic Middle Class radicalism of the 1960 s as featured in Finland-Swedish literature. My approach is cultural materialist in a broad sense; social class is regarded a crucial aspect of the contents and contexts of the novels and literary discussions explored. In the first volume, Middle Class With A Human Face , novels by Christer Kihlman, Jarl Sjöblom, Marianne Alopaeus, and Ulla-Lena Lundberg, respectively, are read from the points of view of place, emotion, and power. The term "cryptotope" is used to designate the hidden places found to play an important role in all of these four narratives. Also, the "chronotope of the provincial small town", described by Mikhail Bakhtin in 1938, is exemplified in Kihlman s satirical novel, as is the chronotope of of war (Algeria, Vietnam) in those of Alopaeus and Lundberg s. All the four novels signal changes in the way general "scripts of emotions", e.g. jealousy, are handled and described. The power relations in the novels are also read, with reference to Michel Foucault. As the protagonists in two of them work as journalists, a critical discussion about media and Bourgeois hegemony is found; the term "repressive legitimation" is created to grasp these patterns of manipulation. The Modernist Debate , part II of the study, concerns a literary discussion between mainly Finland-Swedish authors and critics. Essayist Johannes Salminen (40) provided much of the fuel for the debate in 1963, questioning the relevance to contemporary life of the Finland-Swedish modernist tradition of the 1910 s and 1920 s. In 1965, a group of younger authors and critics, including poet Claes Andersson (28), followed up this critique in a debate taking place mainly in the newspaper Vasabladet. Poets Rabbe Enckell (62), Bo Carpelan (39) and others defended a timeless poetry. This debate is contextualized and the changing literary field is analyzed using concepts provided by sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. In the thesis, the historical moment of Middle Class radicalism with a human face is regarded a temporary luxury that new social groups could afford themselves, as long as they were knocking over the statues and symbols of the Old Bourgeoisie. This is not to say that all components of the Sixties strategy have lost their power. Some of them have survived and even grown, others remain latent in the gene bank of utopias, waiting for new moments of change.

Topochemical photodimerization of 7-acetoxycoumarin: the acetoxy group as a steering agent

Among the various substituted coumarins investigated only 7-acetoxycoumarin is observed to photodimerize topochemically in the crystalline state and this observation may be of importance in the context of "crystal engineering".

2-(p-Chlorophenyl)-3-nitro-2H-chromene

C15H10C1NO3, Mr=287.70, triclinic, PI, Z= 2, F(000)= 296, a = 5.422 (1), b = 9.624 (1), c= 12.636 (2) A, ~= 76.66 (2), fl= 78.67 (2), ~= 87.97 (2) ° , V=629.03 A 3, Din= 1.507 (3), Ox= 1.519Mgm -3, 2(CuKa)=l.5418A, p=26.25mm -~, T= 413 K, final R = 0.0577 for 1859 observed reflections [I>2.5e(/)]. Bond lengths [1.512(5)A] and angles [109.2 (3) °] at the phenyl substitution site are comparable with those in other molecules. The bond angle at the nitro substitution site C(7)-C(8)-C(9) is 122.9 (3) ° owing to the electron-withdrawing character of the nitro group. The pyran ring adapts a half-chair conformation.

Kinetics Of The Aminolysis Reactions Of Chlorocyclotriphosphazenes-Changeover From A Sn2(P) To A Sn1(P) Mechanism

A change-over from SN2(P) to SN1(P) mechanism is established for the chlorine replacement reactions of halogenocyclophosphazenes; this mechanistic change-over helps in rationalising the diverse findings reported for this class of reactions.

1- and 2-Chloromorphine. Halogenation of Morphine meta to the Free Phenolic Hydroxyl Group

Treatment of morphine in aqueous HCl at 70° with KIO3 yields a monochloromorphine, identified as 1-chloromorphine by spectroscopic means and by the fact that it, and its methyl ether 1-chlorocodeine, are different from 2-chloromorphine and 2-chlorocodeine prepared from 2-aminomorphine of unequivocally established structure. Formation of 1-chloromorphine and the previously known 1-bromomorphine involves entry of the halogen into the position meta to the free phenolic hydroxyl. Possible mechanistic interpretations of this unusual orientation are discussed.
