The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of exercise prior to or during pregnancy on maternal reproductive outcome, biochemical profile, and on fetal anomaly frequency in a rat pregnancy model utilizing chemically induced diabetes. Wistar rats (minimum n = 11 animals/group) were randomly assigned the following groups: group 1 (G1), sedentary, nondiabetic; G2, nondiabetic, exercised during pregnancy; G3, nondiabetic, exercised prior to and during pregnancy; G4, sedentary, diabetic; G5, diabetic, exercised during pregnancy; and G6, diabetic, exercised prior to and during pregnancy. A swimming program was utilized for moderate exercise. On day 21 of pregnancy, all rats were anesthetized to obtain blood for biochemical measurements. The gravid uterus was weighed with its contents, and the fetuses were analyzed. The nondiabetic rats exercised prior to pregnancy presented a reduced maternal weight gain. Besides, G2 and G3 groups showed decreased fetal weights at term pregnancy, indicating slight intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). In the diabetic dams, the swimming program did not have antihyperglycemic effects. The exercise applied only during pregnancy caused severe IUGR, as confirmed by reduced fetal weight mean, fetal weight classification, and ossification sites. Nevertheless, exercise was not a teratogenic factor and improved the rats' lipid profiles, demonstrating that the exercise presented possible benefits, but there are also risks prior and during pregnancy, especially in diabetic pregnant women. © The Author(s) 2012.

The aim of this research was to estimate the skeletal growth and development by observingradiographically the morphological changes of the first, second and third cervical vertebrae, according to the method proposed by Hassel &Farman32 (1995) in patients who were going through the outbreak of pubertal growth. The radiographic inspection of the cervical vertebrae was performed by means of cephalometric radiographs and the outbreak of pubertal growth was identified through the events of ossification of the hand and wrist. For that purpose, we selected thecephalometric radiographs and hand•wrist radiographs of 110 Brazilianleukoderms, male and female, with chronological age ranging from 8 to 14,6 years old for the girls and from 9,5 to 15,4 years old for the boys. The results showed that there was a statistically significant correlation between the maturation indicators of the cervical vertebrae and the patients who were going through the outbreak of pubertal growth. The conclusion was that the radiographic evalution of the changes of the cervical vertebrae, in the cephalometric radiographs, is an alternative parameter, which is reliable and practical in the skeletal evalution, and the it completes the range of information that must be obtained from the patient under orthodontic treatment and that it can, circumstantially, replace other methods of evalution

The lunulae, ossification of the meniscus, are found in several species of rodents. Some studies suggest that the lunulae may be anatomical features, because there are not any pathological findings in microscopy. The objective of this study was to investigate the presence of lunulae in capybara knees, the world's largest rodent, by simple tomographic scans and three-dimensional reconstruction. For this purpose, we used two adult capybaras, in which both knees were evaluated. The lunulae were visualized with three-dimensional images, and revealed a total of two cranially. With the presence of lunulae confirmed, the capybara may be included in the group of rodents that have this structural feature, which can also contribute to the distinction between pathological processes and normal anatomic structures on imaging tests.
