This study developed a comprehensive research methodology for identification and quantification of sources responsible for pollutant build-up and wash-off from urban road surfaces. The study identified soil and asphalt wear, and non-combusted diesel fuel as the most influential sources for metal and hydrocarbon pollution respectively. The study also developed mathematical models to relate contributions from identified sources to underlying site specific factors such as land use and traffic. Developed mathematical model will play a key role in urban planning practices, enabling the implementation of effective water pollution control strategies.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) represent a major class of toxic pollutants because of their carcinogenic and mutagenic characteristics. People living in urban areas are regularly exposed to PAHs because of abundance of their emission sources. Within this context, this study aimed to: (i) identify and quantify the levels of ambient PAHs in an urban environment; (ii) evaluate their toxicity; and (iii) identify their sources as well as the contribution of specific sources to measured concentrations. Sixteen PAHs were identified and quantified in air samples collected from Brisbane. Principal Component Analysis – Absolute Principal Component Scores (PCA- APCS) was used in order to conduct source apportionment of the measured PAHs. Vehicular emissions, natural gas combustion, petrol emissions and evaporative/unburned fuel were the sources identified; contributing 56%, 21%, 15% and 8% of the total PAHs emissions, respectively, all of which need to be considered for any pollution control measures implemented in urban areas.

A Z-source inverter based grid-interface for a variable-speed wind turbine connected to a permanent magnet synchronous generator is proposed. A control system is designed to harvest maximum wind energy under varied wind conditions with the use of the permanent magnet synchronous generator, diode-rectifier and Z-source inverter. Control systems for speed regulation of the generator and for DC- and AC- sides of the Z-source inverter are investigated using computer simulations and laboratory experiments. Simulation and experimental results verify the efficacy of the proposed approach.

[ES]El objetivo de este trabajo es el desarrollo de un sistema de control de un inversor trifásico mediante una modulación PWM, basada en la eliminación selectiva de armónicos. En este documento se describen las técnicas empleadas en los sistemas actuales, los métodos para implementar el sistema de control propuesto, las tareas a realizar durante el desarrollo del proyecto, una estimación económica y los resultados obtenidos. Con esto, se pretende demostrar que la eficiencia de la solución propuesta es mayor que la de los métodos actuales y que es posible implementarla de una manera sencilla.

Mathematical models for heated water outfalls were developed for three flow regions. Near the source, the subsurface discharge into a stratified ambient water issuing from a row of buoyant jets was solved with the jet interference included in the analysis. The analysis of the flow zone close to and at intermediate distances from a surface buoyant jet was developed for the two-dimensional and axisymmetric cases. Far away from the source, a passive dispersion model was solved for a two dimensional situation taking into consideration the effects of shear current and vertical changes in diffusivity. A significant result from the surface buoyant jet analysis is the ability to predict the onset and location of an internal hydraulic jump. Prediction can be made simply from the knowledge of the source Froude number and a dimensionless surface exchange coefficient. Parametric computer programs of the above models are also developed as a part of this study. Estuaries provide critical nursery habitat for many commercially and recreationally important fish and shellfish species. These productive, diverse ecosystems are particularly vulnerable to pollution because they serve as repositories for non–point-source contaminants from upland sources, such as pesticide runoff. Atrazine, among the most widely used pesticides in the United States, has also been one of the most extensively studied. There has not, however, been a specific assessment of atrazine in marine and estuarine ecosystems. This document characterizes the presence and transformation of atrazine in coastal waters, and the effects of atrazine on marine organisms. Review of marine and estuarine monitoring data indicate that atrazine is chronically present in U.S. coastal waters at relatively low concentrations. The concentrations detected have typically been below acute biological effects levels, and below the U.S. EPA proposed water quality criteria for atrazine. While direct risk of atrazine impacts are low, uncertainty remains regarding the effects of long-term low levels of atrazine in mixture with other contaminants. It is recommended that best management practices, such as the use of vegetative buffers and public education about pesticide use, be encouraged in the coastal zone to minimize runoff of atrazine into marine and estuarine waters.

High salinity estuaries in the southeastern U.S. have experienced increased inputs of contaminants from nonpoint source (NPS) urban runoff and decreases in habitat due to filling of wetlands and dock/bulkhead construction. Urbanization may pose significant risks to estuarine fauna, particularly crustaceans. The grass shrimp of the genus Palaemonetes, is one of the dominant species found in estuarine tidal creeks, accounting for greater than 50% of all macropelagic fauna on an annual basis. Spatial analytical and geographic information system techniques were used to determine which factors influenced the Palaemonetes population structures in a South Carolina bar-built estuary surrounded by urban development. Impacts from land use practices were investigated using concentric circular buffers around study sites. Factors investigated included sediment-associated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons concentration, land use classification, percent impervious surfaces, and other selected urban factors. Geographic information system and statistical modeling showed quantitative relationships between land use class and impacts on Palaemonetes density. The study suggests that habitat loss is a major factor influencing grass shrimp densities. Multiple regression modeling suggests a significant relationship between habitat alterations and Palaemonetes densities.

为分析淤地坝土壤性质的剖面变化规律及其在非点源污染工程治理方面的可能性,采用经典统计学方法研究了黄土高原典型淤地坝土壤性质在5.20 m剖面上的变化规律,并探讨了淤地坝作为碳储存库以及养分富集库的独特功能.结果表明,①坝前土壤剖面容重、砂粒含量低于坝尾,而土壤含水率、有机碳、粘粒、粉粒、速效磷、硝态氮以及铵态氮均大于坝尾;容重随剖面的变异情况为弱变异性,其余指标为中等变异性;除坝前砂粒含量和坝尾土壤含水率外,其余指标均呈正态分布;②坝前和坝尾剖面土壤含水率随土层深度的增加均呈锯齿型变化趋势,在剖面上的分布表现为波动型;土壤有机碳、速效磷、铵态氮随剖面的变化规律与土壤水分的趋势相同;③除坝尾容重与硝态氮、铵态氮及速效磷与铵态氮的相关性未达到显著水平外,土壤含水率、有机碳、容重、粘粒、粉粒、砂粒、速效磷、硝态氮以及铵态氮之间的相关性均达到了显著水平(p<0.05),并且坝前与坝尾剖面土壤各个性质之间所表现的正相关性或负相关性是一致的;④淤地坝作为黄土高原的一个重要碳储存库,坝前有机碳储量高于坝尾,且坝前在400~520 cm储量最高,坝尾在0~100 cm储量最高;⑤淤地坝对速效养分具有富集效应,坝前储量大于坝尾...

In this paper, taking the northern region of Changxing County for example, with ammonia nitrogen as a pollution assessment index, we used an improved export coefficient method for estimate polluting load of non-point source pollution (NSP) and the social pollution survey data in the study area to estimate point source pollution. By comparing the total pollution output and the national surface water environmental quality standards find that the whole study area achieves the second water quality standard. However, Jiapu Township exceeds the water quality standards seriously because of the superfluous point source pollution. The water quality of other Townships is good. Further analysis showed that different types of land use and proportions in the northern region of Changxing County have a significant impact on the non-point source pollution, the general law is farmland contributes the largest share of the non-point source pollution output, followed by residential area and bare land, besides, with the increase in the proportion of forest and the decrease of farmland and residential area, the non-point source pollution reduces gradually. © 2010 IEEE.
