The readily available complex 1,1-dibromo-2-ferrocenylethylene provides a convenient entry point for the preparation of a wide range of cross-conjugated 1,1-bis(alkynyl)-2-ferrocenylethenes through simple Pd(0)/Cu(I)-mediated cross-coupling reactions with 1-alkynes. The ferrocene moiety in compounds of the general form FcCHC(CCR)2 is essentially electronically isolated from the cross-conjugated π system, as evidenced by IR and UV−vis spectroelectrochemical experiments and quantum chemical calculations. In contrast to the other examples which give stable ferrocenium derivatives upon electrochemical oxidation, the aniline derivatives [FcCHC(CCC6H4NH2-4)2]+ and [FcCHC(CCC6H4NMe2-4)2]+ proved to be unstable on the time scale of the spectroelectrochemical experiments, leading to passivation of the electrode surface over time. There is no significant thermodynamic stabilization of the radical anion [FcCHC(CCC6H4NO2-4)2]− relative to the neutral and dianionic analogues, although the dianion [FcCHC(CCC6H4NO2- 4)2]2− could be studied as a relatively chemically stable species and is well described in terms of two linked nitrophenyl radicals. The capacity to introduce a relatively isolated point charge at the periphery of the cross-conjugated π system appears to make these complexes useful templates for the construction of electrochemically gated quantum interference transistors.

The occurrences of imperial topaz in the Antonio Pereira mine, Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, are associated with the metamorphic carbonate rocks of the Minas Supergroup. The crystals have densities varying from 3.46 to 3.58. The parameters of the unitary cells obtained were: 4.658 to 4.663 angstrom (ao), 8.823 to 8.832 angstrom (b(o)), 8.382 to 8.389 angstrom (c(o)), and 344.65 to 345.46 angstrom 3 (V). The refraction indices presented the following variations: 1.622 to 1.630 (nX), 1.624 to 1.632 (nY), 1.633 to 1.640 (nZ), and 0.008 to 0.011 (B). These properties are coherent with the low fluorine contents obtained (16,48%/17,05wt%). Infrared spectroscopy and microthermometry showed that the fluid inclusions, which represent the mineralizing fluids, are formed by H(2)O (with Ca(2+), Mg(2+) and Na(+)), and CO(2) +/- CH(4). The minimal trapping T-P conditions of 290/320 degrees C and 2,349/2,497bar were obtained for the primary fluid inclusions. The pseudo-secondary fluid inclusions were trapped at conditions of lower temperatures and variable pressures, during the deformation process under local alternating states of stress. The microthermometric studies, the structural analysis and the fluorine contents suggest that the mineralized veins were formed from hydrothermal fluids originated during the Brasiliano tectono-metamorphic event.

STM and impedance results of the self-assembled monolayer (SAM) formed with thionicotinamide (TNA) on gold indicate the presence of defects that increase with the immersion time of the electrode in the TNA solution affecting the SAM electroactivity toward the electron transfer reaction of the cytochrome e metalloprotein and [Fe(CN)(6)](4-) and [Ru(NH(3))(6)](3+) complexes. It was observed that this electroactivity was also affected by the pH of the electrolyte solution. SERS and STM data indicate sulfur coordination to the surface with contribution of the NH(2) group. From the dependence of the TNA surface coverage on the temperature and concentration in solution, thermodynamic parameters of adsorption were determined.

The synthesis, spectra and X-ray crystal structure of N,N`-(+/-)-trans-1,2-cyclohexylenebis(3-ethoxysalicylideneamine) H-2(t-3-EtOsalchxn), a salen-type ligand, are reported. The Schiff base was characterized by elemental analysis, m.p., IR, electronic spectra, H-1 and C-13 NMR spectra. The spectra are discussed and compared with those of N,N`-(+/-)-trans-1,2-cyclohexylenebis(salicylideneamine), H-2(t-salchxn). The electronic and IR spectra were also resolved by deconvolution. The influence of the ethoxy group on the IR, electronic spectrum, H-1 and C-13 NMR spectra is discussed. Strong intramolecular forces are present as supported by the IR and H-1 NMR spectra and the X-ray crystal structure. An intermolecular hydrogen bond is observed and appears twice in a pair of molecules in the unit cell. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The synthesis and characterization of some pyrazoline compounds of 1,3-diketones with hydrazine derivatives, namely, 1-(S-benzyldithiocarbazate)-3-methyl-5-phenyl-5-hydroxypyrazoline (1); 1-(2-thiophenecarboxylic)-3-methyl-5-phenyl-5-hydroxypyrazoline (2); 1-(2-thiophenecarboxylic)-3,5-dimethyl-5-hydroxypyrazoline (3); 1-(S-benzyldithiocarbazato)-3-methyl-5-phenylpyrazole (4); 1-(2-thiophenecarboxylic)-3-methyl-5-phenylpyrazole (5) and 1-(S-benzyldithiocarbazate)-3,5-dimethylpyrazole (6) are reported. Studies by IR, ((1)H, (13)C)-NMR spectroscopies and single crystal X-ray diffraction revealed that compounds (1)(,) (2) and (3) are formed as pyrazoline, whereas (4) and (5) are formed as pyrazole derivatives only under acidic conditions. Compound (1) crystallizes in orthorhombic P2(1)2(1)2(1), a = 6.38960(10) angstrom, b = 12.9176(3) angstrom, c = 21.2552(5) angstrom, (2) crystallizes in monoclinic, P2(1)/n, a = 11.3617(2) angstrom, b = 8.4988(2) angstrom, c = 92.8900(10)angstrom and beta = 92.8900(5)degrees, (3) crystallizes in monoclinic, C2/c, a = 15.9500(5) angstrom, b = 9.3766(3) angstrom, c = 16.6910(5)angstrom and beta = 113.825(2)degrees, (4) crystallizes in monoclinic, P2(1)/c, a = 15.228(4) angstrom, b = 5.5714(13) angstrom, c = 19.956(5)angstrom and beta = 91.575(7)degrees and (6) crystallizes in orthorhombic, P2(1)2(1)2(1), a = 5.3920(2) angstrom, b = 11.2074(5) angstrom, c = 21.885(1)angstrom . The (3) derivative represents the first pyrazoline compound prepared from 2,4-pentanedione and characterized crystallographically.

Extramural learning refers to the educational process that takes place outside the walls of the school (or the university). Extramural learning that takes place in a science center is characterized by hands-on and interactivity. Interactive solar energy exhibits are particularly well suited for out-door science centers. The paper presents some solar energy hands-on exhibits and extramural activities that the author has initiated and participated in.

Traditionally system development starts with the specification of system requirements. The focus of such an approach is on the system under construction, which is considered as of primary importance to the development success. The major problem with such an approach, however, is the neglect of concerns held by the various system stakeholders, whose opinions, loyalties and fears may impact considerably the perception and the reception of the implemented system, its functions and its features. Typically, stakeholder concerns are not collected or identified, and are viewed as of little significance in the system development process. In this paper, however, we present the case for recognising the value of stakeholder concerns, and their use in aligning business needs with system requirements. We describe a method of gathering and analysing stakeholder concerns across an application domain, and then packaging the development experience in dealing with these concerns into patterns. Experience patterns can subsequently be used to guide systems analysts in selecting the most appropriate requirements for the target stakeholder community.

This paper will explore the nexus between literary studies and creative writing on the basis of Stanley Aronowitz’s and Henry Giroux’s work on the democratic potential embedded in a critical literacy education, which provides ‘a language of critique’ and ‘a language of possibility’ (1993: 46). This paper argues that literary studies and
creative writing, as cognate disciplines focused precisely on languages of critique and possibility, are uniquely positioned to cooperatively enact this pedagogical agenda.

Critical research in education is not what it used to be. It must now engage with a differently structured and globalized world with different social and material conditions for its peoples. This paper sets out to name the contemporary structure of feeling in which education researchers now work, particularly in terms of what now is to be the object of their educational theorizing and research and what are to be the intellectual resources brought to bear on such activity. The intention is to open up debate, recognizing that there are no easy answers and yet acknowledging the need for answers to be attempted. It is, therefore, an invitation premised on an optimism of the will to complement legitimate pessimism of the intellect. It concludes that a critical engagement with these matters demands a modernist/postmodernist, reconstructive/deconstructive reflexivity in the mobilizing of a new sociological imagination applied across the broad spectrum which is educational research.
