Review on hard coral recruitment (Cnidaria: Scleractinia) in Colombia

Recruitment, defined and measured as the incorporation of new individuals (i.e. coral juveniles) into a population, is a fundamental process for ecologists, evolutionists and conservationists due to its direct effect on population structure and function. Because most coral populations are self-feeding, a breakdown in recruitment would lead to local extinction. Recruitment indirectly affects both renewal and maintenance of existing and future coral communities, coral reef biodiversity (bottom-up effect) and therefore coral reef resilience. This process has been used as an indirect measure of individual reproductive success (fitness) and is the final stage of larval dispersal leading to population connectivity. As a result, recruitment has been proposed as an indicator of coral-reef health in marine protected areas, as well as a central aspect of the decision-making process concerning management and conservation. The creation of management plans to promote impact mitigation,rehabilitation and conservation of the Colombian coral reefs is a necessity that requires firstly, a review and integration of existing literature on scleractinian coral recruitment in Colombia and secondly, larger scale field studies. This motivated us to summarize and analyze all existing information on coral recruitment to determine the state of knowledge, isolate patterns, identify gaps, and suggest future lines of research.

Mangalore is a port city situated in the west coast state of Karnataka in India. The city hosts both large-scale and small-scale fisheries along its coastline. Traditionally, fishermen catch the product and sell it at a daily auction in the harbour to women vendors, who thereafter transport the goods to the market for commercial sale. The trade starts early in the morning, when the fishermen return to the harbour from their nightly fishing.

Nested sampling for materials: the case of hard spheres

The recently introduced nested sampling algorithm allows the direct and efficient calculation of the partition function of atomistic systems. We demonstrate its applicability to condensed phase systems with periodic boundary conditions by studying the three dimensional hard sphere model. Having obtained the partition function, we show how easy it is to calculate the compressibility and the free energy as functions of the packing fraction and local order, verifying that the transition to crystallinity has a very small barrier, and that the entropic contribution of jammed states to the free energy is negligible for packing fractions above the phase transition. We quantify the previously proposed schematic phase diagram and estimate the extent of the region of jammed states. We find that within our samples, the maximally random jammed configuration is surprisingly disordered.

Hard magnetic properties of Sm3Fe26.7VxN4 and Sm3Fe26.7VxCy

Sm3Fe26.7V2.3N4 nitrides and Sm3Fe26.7V2.3Cy carbides have been synthesized by gas-solid phase reaction. Their hard magnetic properties have been investigated by means of additional ball-milling at room temperature. The saturation magnetization of Sm3Fe26.7V2.3N4 almost decreases linearly with increasing ball-milling time t, but that of Sm3Fe26.7V2.3Cy has no obvious change when the ball-milling time increases from t = 1 to 28 h. As a preliminary result, the maximum remanence B-r of 0.94 and 0.88 T, the coercivity mu(0i)H(C) of 0.75 and 0.25 T, and the maximum energy product (BH) of 108.5 and 39.1 kJ/m(3) for their resin-bonded permanent magnets are achieved, respectively, by ball-milling at 293 K.
