Mixtures of methanol/MTBE were separated with polyimide/sulfonated poly(ether-sulfone) hollow-fiber membranes. The separation was attempted by vapor permeation instead of pervaporation, which had been used by most researchers. The separation properties of the hollow-fiber membranes and operating conditions are discussed. The results showed that separation factors of the blended polyimide/sulfonated poly(ether-sulfone) hollow-fiber membranes were extremely high for the methanol/MTBE mixtures.

The stress transfer from broken fibers to unbroken fibers in fiber-reinforced thermosetting polymer-matrix composites and thermoplastic polymer-matrix composites was studied using a detailed finite element model. In order to check the validity of this approach, an epoxy-matrix monolayer composite was used as thermosetting polymer-matrix composite and a polypropylene (PP)-matrix monolayer composite was used as thermoplastic polymer-matrix composite, respectively. It is found that the stress concentrations near the broken fiber element cause damage to the neighboring epoxy matrix prior to the breakage of other fibers, whereas in the case of PP-matrix composites the fibers nearest to the broken fiber break prior to the PP matrix damage, because the PP matrix around the broken fiber element yields. In order to simulate composite damage evolution, a Monte Carlo technique based on a finite element method has been developed in the paper. The finite element code coupled with statistical model of fiber strength specifically written for this problem was used to determine the stress redistribution. Five hundred samples of numerical simulation were carried out to obtain statistical deformation and failure process of composites with fixed fiber volume fraction.

The reinforcement effect of an acicular inorganic filler, tremolite, on nylon 66 was studied. The mechanical properties of tremolite-filled nylon 66 composites and the effect of the filler particle size on them were obtained. The dynamic mechanical properties and rheological properties of the composites were measured. Two treatments, silane and unsaturated polyester, were used to improve the interface between tremolite and the nylon matrix. The morphologies of the composites were investigated using SEM. The present work investigates the effects of cyclic fatigue loading on the residual properties of an injection-molded composite, carbon-fiber-reinforced poly(phenylene ether ketone) (CF/PEK-C), and damage development in this material under fatigue lending. Test specimens, which had been conditioned to various preselected fatigue damage stages, were measured for their residual properties. The results indicated that cyclic fatigue loading alters the constitutive behavior of the injection-molded composite, especially in the non-linear portion of the stress/strain curve. The residual strength decreases with increase in the number of fatigue cycles as a consequence of the accumulation of fatigue damage, which is dominated by the growth of microcracks. While the residual modulus increases slightly with cyclic fatigue loading, this is probably due to the oriented hardening resulting from creep deformation which is induced during cyclic loading. This experimental study examines the role of formulated molecular weight between crosslink sites on the temperature resistance and mechanical properties of composites based on a polyimide containing a diphenyl thioether unit (PTI). The composites are fabricated by in situ polymerization of monomer reactants (PMR) using three monomeric ingredients: bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl) sulfide dianhydride (TDPA); 4,4'-methylene dianiline (MDA); and the monomethyl ester of norbornene anhydride (NE). By changing monomeric molar ratio, three formulations are prepared, in which formulated molecular weight between crosslink sites varies from 1487 to 3446 g mol(-1). Unidirectional composite laminates from each formulation and T300 carbon fibres are compression moulded and cut into a series of test specimens. By measuring the glass transition temperature (T-g), Mode I interlaminar fracture toughness (G(IC)) and other mechanical properties at room and elevated temperatures, the influences of formulated molecular weight on the temperature resistance and mechanical properties of PTI-based composites are investigated.

The mechanical properties of glass fiber-reinforced phenolphthalein poly(ether ketone)/poly(phenylene sulfide) (PEK-C/PPS) composites have been studied. The morphologies of fracture surfaces were observed by scanning electron microscope. Blending a semicrystalline component, PPS, can improve markedly the mechanical properties of glass fiber-reinforced PEK-C composites. These results can be attributed to the improvement of fiber/matrix interfacial adhesion and higher fiber aspect ratio. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

In this paper the electrochemical properties of isopolymolybdic anion thin film modified carbon fibre (CF) microelectrode prepared by simple dip coating have been described. The modified electrode shows three couples of surface redox waves between + 0.70 and - 0.1 V vs. sce in 2 M H2SO4 solution with good stability and reversibility. The pH of solution has a marked effect on the electrochemical behaviour and stability of the film, the stronger the acidity of electrolyte solution is, the better the stability and reversibility of isopolymolybdic anion film CF microelectrode will be. The scanning potential range strongly influences on the electrochemical behaviour of the film. The isopolymolybdic anion film prepared by the dip coating resulting a monolayer with estimated surface concentration (F) 2.8 x 10(-11) mol cm-2. From the half-peak widths and peak areas of the surface redox waves of the film electrode, the first three surface waves are corresponding to two-electron processes. The electron energy spectra show the products by six electrons reduction are a mixture of Mo(VI) and Mo(V) species. The electrochemical reaction of the isopolymolybdic anion monolayer can be expressed as Mo8O264- + mH+ + 2ne half arrow right over half arrow left [HmMo8-2n(VI)Mo2n(V)O26](4,2n-m)-n = 1, 2, 3; m = 2, 5, 7.

Effective elastic properties of piezoelectric composites containing an infinitely long, radially polarized cylinder embedded in an isotropic non-piezoelectric matrix are theoretically investigated under an external strain field. Analytical solutions of elastic displacement and electric potentials are exactly derived, and the effective elastic responses are formulated in the dilute limit. Meanwhile, a vanishing piezoelectric response mechanism is revealed in the piezoelectric composite containing radially polarized cylinders. Furthermore, it is shown that the effective elastic properties can be enhanced (or reduced) due to the increase of the piezoelectric (or dielectric) constants of the cylinders. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Articular cartilage possesses complex mechanical properties that provide healthy joints the ability to bear repeated loads and maintain smooth articulating surfaces over an entire lifetime. In this study, we utilized a fiber-reinforced composite scaffold designed to mimic the anisotropic, nonlinear, and viscoelastic biomechanical characteristics of native cartilage as the basis for developing functional tissue-engineered constructs. Three-dimensionally woven poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) scaffolds were encapsulated with a fibrin hydrogel, seeded with human adipose-derived stem cells, and cultured for 28 days in chondrogenic culture conditions. Biomechanical testing showed that PCL-based constructs exhibited baseline compressive and shear properties similar to those of native cartilage and maintained these properties throughout the culture period, while supporting the synthesis of a collagen-rich extracellular matrix. Further, constructs displayed an equilibrium coefficient of friction similar to that of native articular cartilage (mu(eq) approximately 0.1-0.3) over the prescribed culture period. Our findings show that three-dimensionally woven PCL-fibrin composite scaffolds can be produced with cartilage-like mechanical properties, and that these engineered properties can be maintained in culture while seeded stem cells regenerate a new, functional tissue construct.

Broadband supercontinuum spectra are generated in a microstructured fiber using femtosecond laser pulses. Noise properties of these spectra are studied through experiments and numerical simulations based on a generalized stochastic nonlinear Schrödinger equation. In particular, the relative intensity noise as a function of wavelength across the supercontinuum is measured over a wide range of input pulse parameters, and experimental results and simulations are shown to be in good quantitative agreement. For certain input pulse parameters, amplitude fluctuations as large as 50% are observed. The simulations clarify that the intensity noise on the supercontinuum arises from the amplification of two noise inputs during propagation - quantum-limited shot noise on the input pulse, and spontaneous Raman scattering in the fiber. The amplification factor is a sensitive function of the input pulse parameters. Short input pulses are critical for the generation of very broad supercontinua with low noise.

Slurries with high penetrability for production of Self-consolidating Slurry Infiltrated Fiber Concrete (SIFCON) were investigated in this study. Factorial experimental design was adopted in this investigation to assess the combined effects of five independent variables on mini-slump test, plate cohesion meter, induced bleeding test, J-fiber penetration test and compressive strength at 7 and 28 days. The independent variables investigated were the proportions of limestone powder (LSP) and sand, the dosages of superplasticiser (SP) and viscosity agent (VA), and water-to-binder ratio (w/b). A two-level fractional factorial statistical method was used to model the influence of key parameters on properties affecting the behaviour of fresh cement slurry and compressive strength. The models are valid for mixes with 10 to 50% LSP as replacement of cement, 0.02 to 0.06% VA by mass of cement, 0.6 to 1.2% SP and 50 to 150% sand (% mass of binder) and 0.42 to 0.48 w/b. The influences of LSP, SP, VA, sand and W/B were characterised and analysed using polynomial regression which identifies the primary factors and their interactions on the measured properties. Mathematical polynomials were developed for mini-slump, plate cohesion meter, J-fiber penetration test, induced bleeding and compressive strength as functions of LSP, SP, VA, sand and w/b. The estimated results of mini-slump, induced bleeding test and compressive strength from the derived models are compared with results obtained from previously proposed models that were developed for cement paste. The proposed response models of the self-consolidating SIFCON offer useful information regarding the mix optimization to secure a highly penetration of slurry with low compressive strength

A wineglass has been used as an acoustic resonator to enhance the photoacoustic signal generated by laser excitation of absorbing dyes in solution. The amplitude of the acoustic signal was recorded using a fiber-optic transducer based on a Fabry-Pérot cavity attached to the rim of the wineglass. The optical and acoustic properties of the setup were characterized, and it was used to quantify the concentration of phosphomolybdenum blue and methyl red solutions. Detection limits of 1.2 ppm and 8 muM were obtained, respectively.

For sustainability considerations, the use of recycled aggregate in concrete has attracted many interests in the research community. One of the main concerns for using such concrete in buildings is its spalling in fire. This may be alleviated by adding steel fibers to form steel fiber reinforced recycled aggregate concrete (SFRAC). This paper presents an experimental investigation into the compressive properties of SFRAC cylinders after exposure to elevated temperatures, including the compressive strength, Young's modulus (stiffness), stress-strain curve and energy absorption capacity (toughness). The effects of two parameters, namely steel fiber volume content (0%, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%) and temperature (room temperature, 200 °C, 400 °C and 600 °C) on the compressive mechanical properties of concrete were investigated. The test results show that both compressive strength and stiffness of the concrete are significantly reduced after exposure to high temperatures. The addition of steel fibers is helpful in preventing spalling, and significantly improves the ductility and the cracking behavior of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) after exposure to high temperatures, which is favorable for the application of RAC in building construction.
