Inverse induction motor modelling of a submarine propulsion system

An inherent trade-off exists in simulation model development and employment: a trade-off between the level of detail simulated and the simulation models computational cost. It is often desirable to simulate a high level of detail to a high degree of accuracy. However, due to the nature of design optimisation, which requires a large number of design evaluations, the application of such simulation models can be prohibitively expensive. A induction motor modelling approache to reduce the computational cost while maintaining a high level of detail and accuracy in the final design is presented. © 2012 IEEE.

Stability margins of nonlinear receding-horizon control via inverse optimality

Using the nonlinear analog of the Fake Riccati equation developed for linear systems, we derive an inverse optimality result for several receding-horizon control schemes. This inverse optimality result unifies stability proofs and shows that receding-horizon control possesses the stability margins of optimal control laws. © 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

The inverse problem in magnetic force microscopy--inferring sample magnetization from MFM images.

Nanomagnetic structures have the potential to surpass silicon's scaling limitations both as elements in hybrid CMOS logic and as novel computational elements. Magnetic force microscopy (MFM) offers a convenient characterization technique for use in the design of such nanomagnetic structures. MFM measures the magnetic field and not the sample's magnetization. As such the question of the uniqueness of the relationship between an external magnetic field and a magnetization distribution is a relevant one. To study this problem we present a simple algorithm which searches for magnetization distributions consistent with an external magnetic field and solutions to the micromagnetic equations' qualitative features. The algorithm is not computationally intensive and is found to be effective for our test cases. On the basis of our results we propose a systematic approach for interpreting MFM measurements.

Identification of an additional two-cysteine containing type I interferon in rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss provides evidence of a major gene duplication event within this gene family in teleosts

Multiple type I interferons (IFNs) have recently been identified in salmonids, containing two or four conserved cysteines. In this work, a novel two-cysteine containing (2C) IFN gene was identified in rainbow trout. This novel trout IFN gene (termed IFN5) formed a phylogenetic group that is distinct from the other three salmonid IFN groups sequenced to date and had a close evolutionary relationship with IFNs from advanced fish species. Our data demonstrate that two subgroups are apparent within each of the 2C and 4C type I IFNs, an evolutionary outcome possibly due to two rounds of genome duplication events that have occurred within teleosts. We have examined gene expression of the trout 2C type I IFN in cultured cells following stimulation with lipopolysaccharide, phytohaemagglutinin, polyI:C or recombinant IFN, or after transfection with polyI:C. The kinetics of gene expression was also studied after viral infection. Analysis of the regulatory elements in the IFN promoter region predicted several binding sites for key transcription factors that potentially play an important role in mediating IFN5 gene expression.

Sox genes in grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) with their implications for genome duplication and evolution

The Sox gene family is found in a broad range of animal taxa and encodes important gene regulatory proteins involved in a variety of developmental processes. We have obtained clones representing the HMG boxes of twelve Sox genes from grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), one of the four major domestic carps in China. The cloned Sox genes belong to group B1, B2 and C. Our analyses show that whereas the human genome contains a single copy of Sox4, Sox11 and Sox14, each of these genes has two co-orthologs in grass carp, and the duplication of Sox4 and Sox11 occurred before the divergence of grass carp and zebrafish, which support the "fish-specific whole-genome duplication" theory. An estimation for the origin of grass carp based on the molecular clock using Sox1, Sox3 and Sox11 genes as markers indicates that grass carp (subfamily Leuciscinae) and zebrafish (subfamily Danioninae) diverged approximately 60 million years ago. The potential uses of Sox genes as markers in revealing the evolutionary history of grass carp are discussed.

Genomic organization, gene duplication, and expression analysis of interleukin-1 beta in channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus)

Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) is one of the pivotal early response pro-inflammatory cytokines that enables organisms to respond to infection and induces a cascade of reactions leading to inflammation. In spite of its importance and two decades of studies in the mammalian species, genes encoding IL-1 beta were not identified from non-mammalian species until recently. Recent research, particularly with genomic approaches, has led to sequencing of IL-1 beta from many species. Clinical studies also Suggested IL-1 beta as an immunoreagulatory molecule potentially useful for enhancing vaccination. However, no IL-1 beta genes have been identified from channel catfish, the primary aquaculture species from the United States. In this study, we identified two distinct cDNAs encoding catfish IL-1 beta. Their encoding genes were identified, sequenced, and characterized. The catfish IL-1 beta genes were assigned to bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) clones. Genomic studies indicated that the IL-1 beta genes were tandemly duplicated on the same chromosome. Phylogenetic analysis of various IL-1 beta genes indicated the possibility of recent species-specific gene duplications in channel catfish, and perhaps also in swine and carp. Expression analysis indicated that both IL-1 beta genes were expressed, but exhibited distinct expression profiles in various catfish tissues, and after bacterial infection with Edwardsiella ictaluri. Passive stabilization of a passively mode-locked Nd : GdVO4 laser by inverse saturable absorption

A diode-pumped Nd:GdVO4 laser mode-locked by a semiconductor saturable absorber and output coupler (SESAOC) is passively stabilized to suppress Q-switched mode-locking. A phase mismatched 131130 second-harmonic generation (SHG) crystal is used for passive stabilization. The continuous wave mode-locking (CWML) threshold is reduced and the pulse width is compressed. Tunable Multiresponsive Methacrylic Acid Based Inverse Opal Hydrogels Prepared by Controlling the Synthesis Conditions

Methacrylic acid based inverse opal hydrogels (MIOHs) have been prepared by controlling the synthesis conditions, including cross-linker content, solvent content, and water content in solvent mixtures to explore the effect of the synthesis conditions (especially solvent content and mixture) on the response performance. Various response events (pH, solvent, ionic strength, 1,4-phenylenediamine dihydrochloride (PDA) response) have been investigated. For pH, solvent response, the same response behaviors have been observed: both the increased solvent (only ethanol) content and the enhanced water content in solvent will lead to the reduced response level of MIOHs compared to that of the increased cross-linker content. However, two different kinds of response behaviors for ionic strength response have been found by adjusting the synthesis conditions. The kinetics of pH response shows characteristics of a diffusion-limited process, and the equilibrium response time is about 20 min, which cannot be reduced by changing the synthesis conditions.
