Dialysis-dependency: the reformulated or remnant person

Being dependent on dialysis is a potentially overwhelming experience where life as previously known is permanently altered. A dialysis-dependent individual may reformulate their identify or perceive that they are a remnant if their former self. This paper will explore and expand Morse and Penrod's (1999) model as a useful way to understand how a person might reconstruct their identify. Grounded in a narrative methodology, interviews if those on haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis were thematically analysed. It was found that dialysis dependency brings an acknowledgment if a lost past, an inescapable present and an unknowable future, filtered through hope and despair. Nurses need to understand the suffering, wrought by such a struggle,to facilitate the positive re-envisioning if those who are dialysis dependent.

Composition dependency of the glass forming ability (GFA) in Mg—Ni—Si system by mechanical alloying

The pure elemental powder mixtures with the compositions of Mg₆₅Ni_xSi₃₅−_x (x = 10, 20, 25, 33 at.%) were subject to high-energy ball mill, and the structures of the mixtures at different intervals of milling were characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The compositional dependency of the glass forming ability (GFA) in Mg–Ni–Si system was evaluated based on the experimental results and the theoretical calculation. The compositional dependency of GFA in Mg–Ni–Si system can be understood well by comparing the enthalpies of the crystalline and amorphous phases based on the Miedema's theory for the formation enthalpy of alloys. Increasing the Ni/Mg ratio and/or decreasing Si content can improve the amorphous formability. The calculation results might be of great help in optimising the composition with high GFA in Mg–Ni–Si system.

Identifying dependency between secure messages for protocol analysis

Collusion attack has been recognized as a key issue in e-commerce systems and increasingly attracted people’s attention for quite some time in the literatures of information security. Regardless of the wide application of security protocol, this attack has been largely ignored in the protocol analysis. There is a lack of efficient and intuitive approaches to identify this attack since it is usually hidden and uneasy to find. Thus, this article addresses this critical issue using a compact and intuitive Bayesian network (BN)-based scheme. It assists in not only discovering the secure messages that may lead to the attack but also providing the degree of dependency to measure the occurrence of collusion attack. The experimental results demonstrate that our approaches are useful to detect the collusion attack in secure messages and enhance the protocol analysis.

Learning dependency model for AMP-activated protein kinase regulation

The AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) acts as a metabolic master switch regulating several intracellular systems. The effect of AMPK on muscle cellular energy status makes this protein a promising pharmacological target for disease treatment. With increasingly available AMPK regulation data, it is critical to develop an efficient way to analyze the data since this assists in further understanding AMPK pathways. Bayesian networks can play an important role in expressing the dependency and causality in the data. This paper aims to analyse the regulation data using B-Course, a powerful analysis tool to exploit several theoretically elaborate results in the fields of Bayesian and causal modelling, and discover a certain type of multivariate probabilistic dependencies. The identified dependency models are easier to understand in comparison with the traditional frequent patterns.

Dependency bagging

In this paper, a new variant of Bagging named DepenBag is proposed. This algorithm obtains bootstrap samples at first. Then, it employs a causal discoverer to induce from each sample a dependency model expressed as a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG). The attributes without connections to the class attribute in all the DAGs are then removed. Finally, a component learner is trained from each of the resulted samples to constitute the ensemble. Empirical study shows that DepenBag is effective in building ensembles of nearest neighbor classifiers.

The documentary 'Two Laws' constitutes a legal document in support of the Borroloola claim to their land and contributes to the decolonisation of the images of Aboriginal Australia, which have circulated within ethnographic cinema, television journalism and fiction film. The 'two laws' of the film's title refer to white law and 'the Law', the system which regulates Borroloola social interactions and relationships with the land.

Dependency of recrystallization mechanism to the initial grain size

The effect of initial grain size on the recrystallization behavior of a type 304 austenitic stainless steel during and following hot deformation was investigated using hot torsion. The refinement of the initial grain size to 8 μm, compared with an initial grain size of 35 μm, had considerable effects on the dynamic recrystallization (DRX) and post-DRX phenomena. For both DRX and post-DRX, microstructural investigations using electron backscattered diffraction confirmed an interesting transition from conventional (discontinuous) to continuous DRX with a decrease in the initial grain size. Also, there were unexpected effects of initial grain size on DRX and post-DRX grain sizes.

Rule-based dependency models for security protocol analysis

Security protocol analysis has been discussed for quite some time in the past few years. Although formal methods have been widely used to identify various vulnerabilities, mainly susceptibility to freshness attacks and impersonation, the arisen inconsistent data between principals and collusion attacks held by a group of dishonest principals have been largely ignored. Moreover, the previous methods focus on reasoning about certain security-related properties and detecting known attacks against secure message, whereas there have been insufficient efforts to handle the above hidden but powerful attacks. In this paper, we address these critical issues and prove the efficiency and intuitiveness of rule-based dependency models in defending a protocol against the attacks. This is able to provide a numerical estimation to measure he occurrence of these attacks. It will be useful in enhancing the current protocol analysis.

Color signals in the Black Grouse (Tetrao tetrix) : signal properties and their condition dependency

Recent progress in techniques of quantifying between‐individual differences of color‐based ornaments has revealed undiscovered possibilities for research in sexual selection. We present how the color spectra data can be comprehensively used for studying the importance of sexual ornaments in the black grouse and how these ornaments are related to a male condition. For this, we used both correlative field and experimental data. Field data indicated that older males had more chromatic coloration than yearlings. Blue chroma of males was correlated with male mating success. We experimentally manipulated yearling birds with testosterone implants and found that testosterone‐implanted males had impaired expression of several sexual ornaments: 10 months after the implantation, both structural‐based blue and carotenoid‐based red eye comb coloration were diminished, as well as lyre (tail) length. However, the manipulation did not affect vital traits under natural selection (wing length or body mass). Our data indicate that structural color is an important trait in sexual selection in this lekking species. Importantly, the data also indicate that male sexual ornaments are more susceptible to environmental conditions than the other male traits, thus showing their heightened condition dependency compared with the other traits mediating the honesty of signaling.
