Development and implementation of a novel measure for quantifying training loads in rowing: The T2minute method. J Strength Cond Res 28(4): 1172–1180, 2014—The systematic management of training requires accurate training load measurement. However, quantifying the training of elite Australian rowers is challenging because of (a) the multicenter, multistate structure of the national program; (b) the variety of training undertaken; and (c) the limitations of existing methods for quantifying the loads accumulated from varied training formats. Therefore, the purpose of this project was to develop a new measure for quantifying training loads in rowing (the T2minute method). Sport scientists and senior coaches at the National Rowing Center of Excellence collaborated to develop the measure, which incorporates training duration, intensity, and mode to quantify a single index of training load. To account for training at different intensities, the method uses standardized intensity zones (T zones) established at the Australian Institute of Sport. Each zone was assigned a weighting factor according to the curvilinear relationship between power output and blood lactate response. Each training mode was assigned a weighting factor based on whether coaches perceived it to be “harder” or “easier” than on-water rowing. A common measurement unit, the T2minute, was defined to normalize sessions in different modes to a single index of load; one T2minute is equivalent to 1 minute of on-water single scull rowing at T2 intensity (approximately 60–72% V[Combining Dot Above]O2max). The T2minute method was successfully implemented to support national training strategies in Australian high performance rowing. By incorporating duration, intensity, and mode, the T2minute method extends the concepts that underpin current load measures, providing 1 consistent system to quantify loads from varied training formats.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity (PA) has been consistently implicated in the etiology of obesity, whereas recent evidence on the importance of sedentary time remains inconsistent. Understanding of dose-response associations of PA and sedentary time with overweight and obesity in adults can be improved with large-scale studies using objective measures of PA and sedentary time. The purpose of this study was to examine the strength, direction and shape of dose-response associations of accelerometer-based PA and sedentary time with body mass index (BMI) and weight status in 10 countries, and the moderating effects of study site and gender. METHODS: Data from the International Physical activity and the Environment Network (IPEN) Adult study were used. IPEN Adult is an observational multi-country cross-sectional study, and 12 sites in 10 countries are included. Participants wore an accelerometer for seven consecutive days, completed a socio-demographic questionnaire and reported height and weight. In total, 5712 adults (18-65 years) were included in the analyses. Generalized additive mixed models, conducted in R, were used to estimate the strength and shape of the associations. RESULTS: A curvilinear relationship of accelerometer-based moderate-to-vigorous PA and total counts per minute with BMI and the probability of being overweight/obese was identified. The associations were negative, but weakened at higher levels of moderate-to-vigorous PA (>50 min per day) and higher counts per minute. No associations between sedentary time and weight outcomes were found. Complex site- and gender-specific findings were revealed for BMI, but not for weight status. CONCLUSIONS: On the basis of these results, the current Institute of Medicine recommendation of 60 min per day of moderate-to-vigorous PA to prevent weight gain in normal-weight adults was supported. No relationship between sedentary time and the weight outcomes was present, calling for further examination. If moderator findings are confirmed, the relationship between PA and BMI may be country- and gender-dependent, which could have important implications for country-specific health guidelines. © 2015 Macmillan Publishers Limited All rights reserved.

Food marketing is facing increasing challenges in using portion size (e.g., “supersizing”) as a marketing tool.Marketers have used portion size to attract customers and encourage purchase, but social agencies areexpressing concern that larger portion sizes encourage greater consumption, which can cause excessiveconsumption and obesity. This article addresses two questions that are central to this debate: (1) How much effectdoes portion size have on consumption? and (2) Are there limits to this effect? A meta-analytic review reveals that,for a doubling of portion size, consumption increases by 35% on average. However, the effect has limits. Anextended analysis shows that the effect of portion size is curvilinear: as portions become increasingly larger, theeffect diminishes. In addition, although the portion-size effect is widespread and robust across a range of individualand environmental factors, the analysis shows that it is weaker among children, women, and overweightindividuals, as well as for nonsnack food items and in contexts in which more attention is given to the food beingeaten.

BACKGROUND: Ecological models of health behaviour are an important conceptual framework to address the multiple correlates of obesity. Several single-country studies previously examined the relationship between the built environment and obesity in adults, but results are very diverse. An important reason for these mixed results is the limited variability in built environments in these single-country studies. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine associations between perceived neighbourhood built environmental attributes and BMI/weight status in a multi-country study including 12 environmentally and culturally diverse countries. METHODS: A multi-site cross-sectional study was conducted in 17 cities (study sites) across 12 countries (Australia, Belgium, Brazil, China, Colombia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Mexico, New Zealand, Spain, the UK and USA). Participants (n = 14222, 18-66 years) self-reported perceived neighbourhood environmental attributes. Height and weight were self-reported in eight countries, and measured in person in four countries. RESULTS: Three environmental attributes were associated with BMI or weight status in pooled data from 12 countries. Safety from traffic was the most robust correlate, suggesting that creating safe routes for walking/cycling by reducing the speed and volume of traffic might have a positive impact upon weight status/BMI across various geographical locations. Close proximity to several local destinations was associated with BMI across all countries, suggesting compact neighbourhoods with more places to walk related to lower BMI. Safety from crime showed a curvilinear relationship with BMI, with especially poor crime safety being related to higher BMI. CONCLUSIONS: Environmental interventions involving these three attributes appear to have international relevance and focusing on these might have implications for tackling overweight/obesity.

Somatic growth patterns represent a major component of organismal fitness and may vary among sexes and populations due to genetic and environmental processes leading to profound differences in life-history and demography. This study considered the ontogenic, sex-specific and spatial dynamics of somatic growth patterns in ten populations of the world's largest lizard the Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis). The growth of 400 individual Komodo dragons was measured in a capture-mark-recapture study at ten sites on four islands in eastern Indonesia, from 2002 to 2010. Generalized Additive Mixed Models (GAMMs) and information-theoretic methods were used to examine how growth rates varied with size, age and sex, and across and within islands in relation to site-specific prey availability, lizard population density and inbreeding coefficients. Growth trajectories differed significantly with size and between sexes, indicating different energy allocation tactics and overall costs associated with reproduction. This leads to disparities in maximum body sizes and longevity. Spatial variation in growth was strongly supported by a curvilinear density-dependent growth model with highest growth rates occurring at intermediate population densities. Sex-specific trade-offs in growth underpin key differences in Komodo dragon life-history including evidence for high costs of reproduction in females. Further, inverse density-dependent growth may have profound effects on individual and population level processes that influence the demography of this species.

Timber harvesting is a common global disturbance that has important effects on the ability of forests to provide ecosystems services and retain biodiversity. Using predictive frameworks to examine biodiversity responses to logging could assist in retaining natural forest values. The intermediate disturbance hypothesis (IDH) and the habitat accommodation model (HAM) potentially offer frameworks for explaining different coarse scale community responses to logging. We used a 60. year post-logging chronosequence to investigate small reptile community responses to age post-logging in temperate forests using three metrics (species richness, evenness and relative abundance). First, we evaluated if variation in these metrics adhered to prior predictions, including the IDH. Second, we evaluated how age post-logging influence community responses through fine scale vegetation elements. Third, we evaluated support for the HAM by measuring compositional change (species turnover) of small reptile community to age post-logging. Reptile relative abundance exhibited a curvilinear relationship to age since logging, contradicting our prior prediction of sustained increase. Species richness and evenness were unrelated to age since logging thus providing no support to IDH and other prior predictions. Relative abundance and richness did not relate to any vegetation characteristic tested. These metrics were also unrelated to logging method. Community composition was marginally significantly influenced by age since logging, thus supporting the HAM. Our results suggest that forest reptiles exposed to logging exhibit variable changes depending on the community metric in question, and that different approaches, including those based on species traits, are needed to improve evaluating disturbance related biodiversity responses.

O comportamento alimentar de insetos predadores determina o impacto que causam às populações com as quais interagem. Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a resposta funcional e a extração de alimento por Cosmoclopius nigroannulatus Stal (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) em diferentes densidades de ninfas de 1° ínstar de Spartocera dentiventris (Berg) (Hemiptera: Coreidae). Os insetos foram obtidos de uma criação mantida em uma lavoura experimental de fumo em Porto Alegre, RS, Brasil. O experimento foi em laboratório (27 ± 1°C; 80 ± 5% UR; fotofase de 12h), sendo utilizados 10 adultos, recém-emergidos, de cada sexo de C. nigroannulatus em cada uma das cinco densidades (N) de ninfas (5, 15, 25, 35 e 45) de S. dentiventris. Os predadores foram observados individualmente por cinco dias, a cada 24h (T), registrando-se o número e o peso de ninfas mortas e/ou consumidas (Na), o peso do predador (Pb) e o das ninfas remanescentes e o tempo gasto para a ingestão do alimento (Ti). Foram ainda estimados o tempo de manuseio (Tm), tempo de busca (Tb), eficiência de busca (E) e taxa de ataque (a’). Em relação à extração de alimento foram estimadas a quantidade e o percentual de alimento extraído de cada ninfa (Pe), a quantidade extraída por minuto (Pe/min), as sobras (S) e a taxa de consumo relativa (RCR). Para a avaliação da extração de alimento cada tratamento foi pesado, com os seguintes resultados: 5,1 14,7, 29,8, 30,6 e 44,8mg de ninfas (oferecidas aos machos) e 5,5, 14,7, 31,1, 37,4 e 48,5mg de ninfas (oferecidas às fêmeas). fêmeas). Foi encontrada correlação positiva entre Na e a densidade (N), sendo que as fêmeas ingeriram mais ninfas que os machos. Tm foi maior nos machos (3,0h) que nas fêmeas (1,9h), tendo o tempo de manuseio total (Tm x Na) aumentado com a densidade. Tb, E e a' apresentaram correlação negativa em relação à densidade. Os componentes da resposta funcional foram ajustados ao modelo randômico da equação dos discos de Holling (Na= N {1-exp[-a’(T-TmNa)]}), evidenciando o tipo II (curvilinear) de resposta funcional como característico da espécie. Com o aumento da quantidade de ninfas oferecidas evidenciou-se aumento no consumo total de ninfas ingeridas em mg (Na), bem como em Pe, Pb, S e RCR. Já em relação ao Na e Pe, em termos percentuais, e Pe/min verificou-se uma diminuição, sendo que as fêmeas consumiram e ganharam mais peso que os machos. Com os machos, a estabilização de Na e Pe ocorreu em torno da quantidade 29,8 mg de ninfas oferecidas. Quanto às fêmeas, a estabilização do consumo foi por volta de 31,1 mg de ninfas oferecidas. Não se encontrou correlação entre o tempo de ingestão (Ti) e a quantidade de ninfas, sendo que as fêmeas ingerem mais rapidamente (19,9 ± 2,26min) que os machos (23,9 ± 1,29min). Os resultados sugerem que o comportamento alimentar de C. nigroannulatus sobre ninfas de 1° ínstar de S. dentiventris está diretamente relacionado à quantidade de presas disponíveis, podendo ser considerado um agente potencial para o controle biológico.

Nesta dissertação, mostramos evidências de que a diversificação e o valor das empresas aparentam ser negativamente correlacionados. Esta relação é observada para diferentes métricas de diversificação e se mantém mesmo quando controlamos o efeito de outras variáveis conhecidas por influenciar o valor das empresas. Nossa análise não conseguiu comprovar de forma robusta se o efeito negativo causado pela diversificação diminui na medida em que esta se dá em segmentos mais relacionados. No entanto há indícios de que esta hipótese seja de fato verdadeira Um resultado interessante observado foi que assim como empresas especializadas, as empresas altamente diversificadas também possuem uma alta percepção de valor. Mostramos que a relação entre valor e diversificação possui o perfil de uma curva côncava com um ponto de mínimo justamente no nível de diversificação intermediário. Por fim, observamos que o efeito da diversificação no valor das empresas nos anos de 2008 e 2007 passou a ser positivo. O que nos sugere que em tempos de crise econômica, a percepção do valor de empresas mais diversificadas aumenta de forma significativa.

The studied region, named Forquilha and localized in northwestern Central Ceará domain (northern portion of Borborema Province), presents a lithostratigraphic framework constituted by paleoproterozoic metaplutonics, metasedimentary sequences and neoproterozoic granitoids. The metasedimentary rocks of Ceará group occupy most part of the area. This group is subdivided in two distinct units: Canindé and Independência. Canindé unit is represented basically by biotite paragneisses and muscovite paragneisses, with minor metabasic rocks (amphibolite lens). Independência sequence is composed by garnetiferous paragneisses, sillimanite-garnet-quartz-muscovite schists and quartz-muscovite schists, pure or muscovite quartzites and rare marbles. At least three ductile deformation events were recognized in both units of Ceará group, named D1, D2 and D3. The former one is interpreted as related to a low angle tangential tectonics which mass transport is southward. D2 event is marked by the development of close/isoclinal folds with a N-S oriented axis. Refolding patterns generated by F1 and F2 superposition are found in several places. The latest event (D3) corresponds to a transcurrent tectonics, which led to development of mega-folds and several shear zones, under a transpressional regime. The mapped shear zones are Humberto Monte (ZCHM), Poço Cercado (ZCPC) and Forquilha (ZCF). Digital image processing of enhanced Landsat 7-ETM+ satellite images, combined with field data, demonstrate that these penetrative structures are associated with positive and negative geomorphologic patterns, distributed in linear and curvilinear arrangements with tonal banding, corresponding to the ductile fabric and to crests. Diverse color composites were tested and RGB-531 and RGB-752 provided the best results for lineament analysis of the most prominent shear zones. Spatial filtering techniques (3x3 and 5x5 filters) were also used and the application of Prewitt filters generated the best products. The integrated analysis of morphological and textural aspects from filtered images, variation of tonalities related to the distribution of geologic units in color composites and the superposition over a digital elevation model, contributed to a characterization of the structural framework of the study area. Kinematic compatibility of ZCHM, ZCPC, ZCF shear zones, as well as Sobral-Pedro II (ZCSPII) shear zone, situated to the west of the study area, was one of the goal of this work. Two of these shear zones (ZCHM, ZCPC) display sinistral movements, while the others (ZCSPII, ZCF) exhibit dextral kinematics. 40Ar/39Ar ages obtained in this thesis for ZCSPII and ZCPC, associated with other 40Ar/39Ar data of adjacent areas, indicate that all these shear zones are related to Brasiliano orogeny. The trend of the structures, the opposite shear senses and the similar metamorphic conditions are fitted in a model based on the development of conjugate shear zones in an unconfined transpression area. A WNW-ESE bulk shortening direction is infered. The geometry and kinematic of the studied structures suggest that shortening was largely accommodated by lateral extrusion, with only minor amounts of vertical stretch

The geological modeling allows, at laboratory scaling, the simulation of the geometric and kinematic evolution of geological structures. The importance of the knowledge of these structures grows when we consider their role in the creation of traps or conduits to oil and water. In the present work we simulated the formation of folds and faults in extensional environment, through physical and numerical modeling, using a sandbox apparatus and MOVE2010 software. The physical modeling of structures developed in the hangingwall of a listric fault, showed the formation of active and inactive axial zones. In consonance with the literature, we verified the formation of a rollover between these two axial zones. The crestal collapse of the anticline formed grabens, limited by secondary faults, perpendicular to the extension, with a curvilinear aspect. Adjacent to these faults we registered the formation of transversal folds, parallel to the extension, characterized by a syncline in the fault hangingwall. We also observed drag folds near the faults surfaces, these faults are parallel to the fault surface and presented an anticline in the footwall and a syncline hangingwall. To observe the influence of geometrical variations (dip and width) in the flat of a flat-ramp fault, we made two experimental series, being the first with the flat varying in dip and width and the second maintaining the flat variation in width but horizontal. These experiments developed secondary faults, perpendicular to the extension, that were grouped in three sets: i) antithetic faults with a curvilinear geometry and synthetic faults, with a more rectilinear geometry, both nucleated in the base of sedimentary pile. The normal antithetic faults can rotate, during the extension, presenting a pseudo-inverse kinematics. ii) Faults nucleated at the top of the sedimentary pile. The propagation of these faults is made through coalescence of segments, originating, sometimes, the formation of relay ramps. iii) Reverse faults, are nucleated in the flat-ramp interface. Comparing the two models we verified that the dip of the flat favors a differentiated nucleation of the faults at the two extremities of the mater fault. V These two flat-ramp models also generated an anticline-syncline pair, drag and transversal folds. The anticline was formed above the flat being sub-parallel to the master fault plane, while the syncline was formed in more distal areas of the fault. Due the geometrical variation of these two folds we can define three structural domains. Using the physical experiments as a template, we also made numerical modeling experiments, with flat-ramp faults presenting variation in the flat. Secondary antithetic, synthetic and reverse faults were generated in both models. The numerical modeling formed two folds, and anticline above the flat and a syncline further away of the master fault. The geometric variation of these two folds allowed the definition of three structural domains parallel to the extension. These data reinforce the physical models. The comparisons between natural data of a flat-ramp fault in the Potiguar basin with the data of physical and numerical simulations, showed that, in both cases, the variation of the geometry of the flat produces, variation in the hangingwall geometry

Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) and isotopic (U-Pb, Sm-Nd) data were combined to study the emplacement setting of the granite sheets that constitute the Esperanca pluton in the Borborema Province (Northeastern Brazil). The sheets dip moderately to the SE along the contact zone between the Paleoproterozoic basement rocks and Early Neoproterozoic orthogneisses and metasediments. Granite fabrics were determined mainly using AMS in 136 sites distributed within the central and western part of the pluton. The sheets normally have susceptibility lower than 0.35 mSI but, locally, where a Ti-poor magnetite appears with titanite, the susceptibility increases up to 5 mSI. Comparison between the silicate fabric and AMS showed inconsistencies between the shape of mineral and magnetic ellipsoids despite of their orientations that fit fairly well to each other. AMS indicated the deformation was partitioned between the lower (tonalite, syenogranite) and upper (leucogranite and coarse porphyritic granite) sheets. In the lower sheets the curvilinear lineation trajectory is attributed to a dominant heterogeneous pure shear event that flattened laterally the still molten tonalite and syenogranite into the regional foliation. ne associated microstructures are typically magmatic. Zircon U/Pb data of the syenogranite yielded a crystallization age of 592 +/- 5 Ma. In the upper sheets the fabric recorded a component of simple shear deformation that displaced the coarse porphyritic granite and the top gneissic host rocks to the southwest. Microstructures are mostly of post-full crystallization type. T(DM) model ages and epsilon(Nd) (t = 0) values indicate that the magma contaminated by partial melting of the regional host rocks. Sheet propagation at the emplacement level would have exploited the contact zone between crustal blocks of different rheologies when the melt pressures would be able to tensionally fail the anisotropy of the host rocks. The electronic states of quantum rings with centerlines of arbitrary shape and non-uniform width in a threading magnetic field are calculated. The solutions of the Schrodinger equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions are obtained by a variational separation of variables in curvilinear coordinates. We obtain a width profile that compensates for the main effects of the curvature variations in the centerline. Numerical results are shown for circular, elliptical, and limacon-shaped quantum rings. We also show that smooth and tiny variations in the width may strongly affect the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations.
