Features of associations of newly formed minerals in Oligocene basalts from the Reykjanes Ridge (DSDP Hole 407), which consist in wide development of celadonite-glauconite group minerals, as well as saponite, cristobalite and specific Fe-Si formations is shown. Detailed mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of these newly formed minerals are reported. It is firstly shown that at underwater alteration of basalts not only celadonite can be generated, but also glauconite. Dependence of secondary mineral composition from petrochemical features of original basalts and from their permeability is revealed. It is concluded that complexes of secondary minerals formed during alteration of basalts with similar petrochemical characteristics in the ocean and on the continent are different.

Bituminologic analysis of sediment cores from the Black Sea (water depth up to 2000 m, drilling depth up to 625 m) has revealed all components typical for fossilized rocks, viz. hydrocarbons, resins, asphaltenes, and insoluble matter. Proportions of these components, their composition and properties do not display any dependence on depth in hole and seem to be governed by composition of organic matter and conditions and degree of its transformation at early stages of lithogenesis.

In oligotrophic waters the light spectrum is mostly blue, and therefore the physiological and biochemical responses to blue light occurring in the coral tissue and in the symbiotic algae are important. Examination of the wavelength dependence of two free radical scavenger enzyme activity revealed an increase in activity in the blue light range (440-480 nm) compared to the red (640680 nm) in the full visible light (400-700 nm) range. These data show for the first time the relationship between the action spectra of photosynthesis and the activity of two main antioxidant enzymes in the symbiotic coral Favia favus. It was found that in the animal (host) the enzyme response to the spectral distribution of light was higher than that of the zooxanthellae, probably due to accumulation of free radicals within the host tissue. Furthermore, we found that the activity of these enzymes is affected in nature by the length of the day and night, and in the laboratory, by the duration of the illumination. Changes in the pigment concentrations were also observed in response to growth under the blue region and the whole PAR spectrum, while fluorescence measurements with the fast repetition rate fluorometer (FRRF) showed a decrease in the sigma cross section and a decrease in the quantum yield also in the blue part of the spectrum. These changes of scavenger enzymes activity, pigment concentration and fluorescence yield at different light spectra are vital in acclimatization and survival of corals in shallow water environments with high light radiation. The temperature dependence of the pyrolysis products of two types of lignin (Alcell lignin and Asian lignin) was investigated using pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (PyGC-MS). About 50 compounds were identified and quantified for each type of lignin over a temperature range of 400-800C. The maximum yield of phenolic compounds was obtained at 600C for both lignins, which was 17.2% for Alcell lignin and 15.5% for Asian lignin. Most of the phenolic compounds had an individual yield of less than 1%; however, for Alcell lignin, 5-hydroxyvanillin was the highest yield at 4.29 wt%on dry ash-free lignin, and for Asian lignin, 2-methoxy-4-vinylphenol was the highest yield at 4.15 wt % on dry ash-free lignin.

Mineralogical and chemical analyses performed on 67 ferromanganese nodules from widely varying locations and depths within the marine environment of the Pacific Ocean indicate that the minor element composition is controlled by the mineralogy and that the formation of the mineral phases is depth dependent. The pressure effect upon the thermodynamics or kinetics of mineral formation is suggested as the governing agent in the depth dependence of the mineralogy. The minor elements, Pb and Co, appear concentrated in the dMnO2 phase, whereas Cu and Ni are more or less excluded from this phase. In the manganites, Pb and Co are relatively low in concentration, whereas Cu and Ni are spread over a wide range of values. The oxidation of Pb and Co from divalent forms in sea water to higher states can explain their concentration in the dMnO2 phase.
