Island systems from around the world have provided fascinating opportunities for studies pertaining to various evolutionary processes. One recurring feature of isolated islands is the presence of endemic radiations. In this regard, the Indian subcontinent is an interesting entity given it has been an island during much of its history following separation from Madagascar and currently is isolated from much of Eurasia by the Himalayas in the north and the Indian Ocean in the south. Not surprisingly, recent molecular studies on a number of endemic taxa from India have reported endemic radiations. These studies suggest that the uniqueness of Indian biota is not just due to its diverse origin, but also due to evolution in isolation. The isolation of India has generated some peculiarities typically seen on oceanic islands. However, these patterns might be confined to, groups with low dispersal ability.

La historia de las instituciones está construida por una serie de hechos y determinaciones de sus protagonistas. En algunos casos, estos momentos son registrados en documentos dispersos, mientras que una gran mayoría están sumergidos en el tiempo con la amenaza de no poder rescatarlos. Esta situación, entre otras cosas, impide a las generaciones futuras la comprensión del pasado, ya que no cuentan con los elementos básicos para analizar y entender los hechos originados por las mujeres y hombres que conformaron dicha historia. En este documento el Programa para el estudio y uso sustentable de la biota austral (ProBiota) reúne en cinco capítulos una serie de hechos y documentos que son parte del patrimonio histórico de nuestro país. I - Actos realizados en la Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Museo (FCNyM, UNLP) generados por la División Zoología Vertebrados y el Instituto de Limnología “Dr. Raúl A. Ringuelet”. II - Semblanzas de algunos limnólogos argentinos. III - Reseñas de instituciones y escritos referidos a aspectos históricos de la limnología en nuestro país. IV - Sociedades y eventos relacionados a esta disciplina. V - Obras, documentos y revistas. Los documentos publicados son citados formalmente, mientras que las alocuciones se presentan con su título y el nombre del autor al final. Esta modesta contribución tiene como objetivo ser el inicio de sucesivas recopilaciones que confluyan en un documento exhaustivo y profundo de la rica historia de las ciencias naturales en la Argentina.

We hypothesize that the richness and diversity of the biota in Lake Moraine (42°50’47”N, 75°31’39”W) in New York have been negatively impacted by 60 years of macrophyte and algae management to control Eurasian watermilfoil ( Myriophyllum spicatum L.) and associated noxious plants. To test this hypothesis we compare water quality characteristics, richness and selected indicators of plant diversity, zooplankton, benthic macroinvertebrates and fish in Lake Moraine with those in nearby Hatch Lake (42°50’06”N, 75°40’67”W). The latter is of similar size and would be expected to have similar biota, but has not been subjected to management. Measurements of temperature, pH, oxygen, conductivity, Secchi transparency, calcium, total phosphorus and nitrites + nitrates are comparable. Taxa richness and the diversity indices applied to the aquatic macrophytes are similar in both lakes. (PDF has 8 pages.)

En el transcurso del año 2007 se cumplieron cuarenta años de la publicación de la obra Los peces argentinos de agua dulce de Raúl A. Ringuelet, Raúl H. Arámburu y Armonía Alonso de Arámburu, la que representó un hito dentro de la ictiología nacional y regional. Por este motivo, el Programa para el estudio y uso sustentable de la Biota Austral Probiota), como un modesto homenaje a sus autores, quiere rescatar parte de la misma, ya que su reedición total para nosotros es hoy un objetivo imposible de cumplir. Para ello, hemos elegido reproducir su iconografía la cuál esta compuesta de 10 láminas y 37 figuras cuyos autores fueron A. Alonso de Arámburu, Carmen Castellano, Irma Cicchini, María E. Costa, María L. Fuster, E. Maristany, Ana Thörmalen y Carlos. A. Tremouilles. En este documento se agrupan las láminas en una primera sección y posteriormente las figuras, para finalizar con un apéndice que contiene la lista de las especies mencionadas con su sistemática actualizada. Este es otro paso dirigido a la consolidación de nuestra disciplina, ya que manteniendo siempre el recuerdo vivo del pasado lograremos afianzar el presente, lo que nos permitirá planificar con fundamentos nuestro futuro. El 29 de abril del año próximo pasado se cumplieron veinte años del fallecimiento de Raúl Adolfo Ringuelet, quién fuera uno de los científicos más destacados que han dado las ciencias naturales de la Argentina. Salvo contadas excepciones, no hubo recordatorios sobre este acontecimiento, pero el Dr. Ringuelet es uno de los casos que no necesita de la magnanimidad y el tiempo de los mortales para tenerlo presente, ya que la vigencia y el peso de su obra, hacen cumplir con aquello de que “mientras el recuerdo permanece, la muerte no existe”. El Programa para el Estudio y Uso Sustentable de la Biota Austral (ProBiota) quiere recordarlo reproduciendo la publicación de una serie de conferencias dictadas en su juventud, durante 1943 y 1944, en LS 11 Radio Provincia de Buenos Aires y que fueron publicadas en 1946 bajo el título de “Temas de Ciencias Naturales”. En ese año, Raúl A. Ringuelet contaba con treinta dos años y el mundo se encontraba en su mayor parte lacerado y bajo ruinas por la conducta recurrente de la “especie hipócrita” que, en nombre de las ideologías y la paz universal, había concretado la matanza de varios millones de personas. En nuestro país se asistía al nacimiento de un nuevo movimiento histórico y el comienzo de profundos desencuentros en nuestra sociedad, los cuales, lamentablemente, aún no han terminado. En esta década la ciencia argentina sería destacada con el Premio Nóbel a través del Dr. Bernardo Houssay y en las ciencias naturales se habían publicado, entre otras obras, los rasgos principales de la Fitogeografía argentina de J. Frenguelli, la Zoogeografía de Cabrera y Yepes, la última entrega del catalógo sistemático de las aves de Argentina de Steullet y Deautier, y el estudio de la Selva Marginal de Punta Lara de A. L. Cabrera (hijo) y G. Dawson. La lectura de estas conferencias, un total de diez, nos muestra, ya entonces, el espíritu rico, inquieto y polifacético de Raúl A. Ringuelet, el cuál lo distinguiría pocos años después. En algunas de ellas realiza la reseña de la vida y obra de diferentes científicos y naturalistas de nuestro país; en las restantes, expresa ingeniosamente conceptos precursores sobre biodiversidad, conservación y manejo de los recursos naturales y su transferencia a los diferentes niveles de la sociedad. Finalmente, desde ProBiota consideramos que la trascripción de este tipo de documentos constituye un aporte para aquellos interesados en la historia de las ciencias naturales y, asimismo, una contribución para que nuestras jóvenes generaciones de biólogos y naturalistas posean una noción más clara de quienes marcaron rumbos e hicieron escuela en nuestra disciplina con un genuino sentido nacional.

Prosiguiendo con la política de rescatar documentos que, por diferentes motivos, se han extraviado con el paso del tiempo, el Programa para el estudio y uso sustentable de la biota austral (ProBiota) reedita el primer y único boletín de la Asociación Limnológica y Oceanográfica Argentina (ALOA). Esta asociación pretendía convocar a los hidrobiólogos argentinos, pero interrumpió su camino a poco de iniciado en el año 1953. Los motivos de ese hecho los desconozco; aunque personalmente creo que, entre otras cosas, debe haber influido el quiebre institucional de 1955 cuando se profundizaron nuevamente las heridas en nuestra sociedad. No deja de ser paradójico que hoy, a casi cincuenta años de este suceso, la Asociación Argentina de Limnología (AAL) se encuentre en una situación similar luego de veinte años de trayectoria que se cumplirían en el mes de marzo del próximo año. Hasta 1998, fecha de su último congreso, tuvo un gran impulso generando importantes eventos nacionales e internacionales. Sin embargo, a partir de allí fue decayendo con rapidez y hoy se enfrenta a su inminente disolución. A mi entender, la reversión de este hecho sólo podría lograrse sobre la base del sacrificio personal y del conjunto, solidaridad y, sobre todo, respeto a la memoria de todos aquellos que construyeron las bases de la limnología nacional.

The Hawkesbury-Nepean River in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, is the largest river system in the Sydney metropolitan area, and it drains most of the developing areas to the west. This catchment is under increasing pressure from urban expansion and the river frequently experiences extended periods of low flows due to a combination of extensive river regulation and the Australian temperate climate. Added to this, the river and several of its tributaries receive treated sewage and stormwater from various sources. Habitats and biota within the Hawkesbury-Nepean River catchment have been altered since European settlement and many introduced species have spread throughout the terrestrial and aquatic environment (Recher et al. 1993). Submersed macrophyte assemblages within the river have undergone significant changes in their distribution and abundance due to eutrophication, habitat alteration and changes to river flows (Recher et al 1993). Anecdotal evidence and some early unpublished studies suggest that egeria (Egeria densa Planchon), introduced from South America as an aquarium plant, was present in the Hawkesbury-Nepean River prior to 1980. Sainty (1973) reported a persistent and troublesome infestation over a number of years at Wallacia in the upper Nepean River. Here, as part of a larger study on the ecology of macrophyte and invertebrate assemblages associated with anthropogenic disturbance in the Hawkesbury-Nepean River, we document the rapid spread of egeria since 1994. Significant increases in egeria biomass were also found, and we present preliminary evidence which suggest that the native ribbonweed, vallisneria (Vallisneria americana Michx.) is being displaced.

El Programa para el estudio y uso sustentable de la Biota Austral (Probiota), como un modesto homenaje, rescata a cuarenta y cinco años de su publicación la iconografía ictiológica de la obra Recursos Acuáticos Vivos incluída en la Serie Evaluación de los Recursos Naturales de la Argentina y editada por el Consejo Federal de Inversiones (CFI) en 1963. Para la ejecución de esta obra el CFI contrató a los doctores Tomás L. Marini y Rogelio B. Summary: This cruise report is a summary of a field survey conducted within the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary (SBNMS), located between Cape Cod and Cape Ann at the mouth of Massachusetts Bay. The survey was conducted June 14 – June 21, 2008 on NOAA Ship NANCY FOSTER Cruise NF-08-09-CCEHBR. Multiple indicators of ecological condition and human dimensions were sampled synoptically at each of 30 stations throughout SBNMS using a random probabilistic sampling design. Samples were collected for the analysis of benthic community structure and composition; concentrations of chemical contaminants (metals, pesticides, PAHs, PCBs, PBDEs) in sediments and target demersal biota; nutrient and chlorophyll levels in the water column; and other basic habitat characteristics such as depth, salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, pH, sediment grain size, and organic carbon content. In addition to the fish samples that were collected for analysis of chemical contaminants relative to human-health consumption limits, other human-dimension indicators were sampled as well including presence or absence of fishing gear, vessels, surface trash, marine mammals, and noxious sediment odors. The overall purpose of the survey was to collect data to assess the status of ecosystem condition and potential stressor impacts throughout SBNMS, based on these various indicators and corresponding management thresholds, and to provide this information as a baseline for determining how such conditions may be changing with time. While sample analysis is still ongoing a few preliminary results and observations are reported here. A final report will be completed once all data have been processed. The results are anticipated to be of value in supporting goals of the SBNMS and National Marine Sanctuary Program aimed at the characterization, protection, and management of sanctuary resources (pursuant to the National Marine Sanctuary Reauthorization Act) as well as a new priority of NCCOS and NOAA to apply Ecosystem Based approaches to the Management of coastal resources (EBM) through Integrated Ecosystem Assessments (IEAs) conducted in various coastal regions of the U.S. including the Northeast Atlantic continental shelf. This cruise report is a summary of a field survey conducted in coastal-ocean waters off Florida from Anclote Key to West Palm Beach and from approximately 1 nautical mile (nm) offshore seaward to the shelf break (100 m). The survey was conducted May 15 - May 28, 2007 on NOAA Ship NANCY FOSTER Cruise NF-07-08-NCCOS. Multiple indicators of ecological condition were sampled synoptically at each of 50 stations throughout the region including 10 stations within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS) using a random probabilistic sampling design. Samples were collected for the analysis of benthic community structure and composition; concentrations of chemical contaminants (metals, pesticides, PAHs, PCBs, PBDEs) in sediments and target demersal biota; nutrient and chlorophyll levels in the water column; and other basic habitat characteristics such as depth, salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, sediment grain size, and organic carbon content. The overall purpose of the survey was to collect data to assess the status of ecological condition in coastal-ocean waters of the region, based on these various indicators, and to provide this information as a baseline for determining how environmental conditions may be changing with time. The results will be of value in helping to broaden our understanding of the status of ecological resources and their controlling factors, including impacts of potential ecosystem stressors, in such strategic coastal areas.
