Microbiological quality of whole and filleted shelf-tilapia

Despite fish being a rich source of animal nutrients and having numerous associated health benefits, it is an extremely perishable food, prone to a wide range of hazards. The bacterial load associated with shelf-whole-fish organs (e.g. digestive tracts and skin) or mishandling of fish may be a vehicle of infection and become a risk to public health. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the microbiological quality of whole ungutted and filleted shelf-tilapia, as well as assess the safety for human consumption. For this purpose, in order to investigate the distribution and occurrence of bacterial populations, the count of total and thermotolerant coliforms, coagulase-positive Staphylococcus and presence of Salmonella spp. was determined. This paper shows that all fish organs were contaminated with thermotolerant coliform. Skin and fillet show higher populations and occurrence of all microorganisms analyzed. Lower bacterial populations were recovered from the gut and muscles of whole tilapia. Two samples of fillet were contaminated with coagulase-positive Staphylococcus. It can be concluded that the skin and filleted tilapia are important carriers of food-borne pathogens. In addition, fish might become an important cross and self-contamination source. Expresividad poética y traducción con breve lectura de Fedro I. 1

The term poetic expressiveness refers to the multiple joints of the plan of expression, derived from the expressive value of the linguistic sign (ROSSET: 1970, 135) and its particular role in the field of poetry. The features of meaning, such as projection, elevation and salience, make it possible to consider expressive all poetic statements which constitute particularly dense instances in the formal consolidation of a convergence between the two planes (expression/content), and therefore it stands out from the others due to the high density of structural parallelisms and isomorphisms, which are procedures responsible for the impression that a particular form of content can only be expressed by cutting that same specific form of expression out. These considerations have an immediate impact on the reading, interpretation and practice of translating poems, which is intended to be demonstrated here, through an example of translation of a Phaedrus' fable, written in iambic meter.

Flujos meridionales en el Océano Índico Ecuatorial

[ES]Un modelo estacionario propuesto por Joyce (1988a) es evaluado en el Océano Índico ecuatorial, usando el estrés de vientos NCEP y temperaturas y salinidades de WOA05 y Argo. El transporte zonal integrado de los datos WOA05 se parece al de los datos Argo en el monzón de invierno (WM) y en los periodos de transición (TP), presentando valores mayores en el caso de datos Argo. En cambio, para el monzón de verano (SM) los transportes zonales integrados de los datos WOA05 y Argo tienen direcciones opuestas debido a que en los datos de WOA05 la Corriente de Somalia (SC) es débil y casi inexistente. Aunque los datos Argo tienen mayor cantidad de estructuras mesoscalares que los datos WOA05, los datos Argo obtienen una SC que se ajusta mejor a los estudios previos y, en consecuencia, los datos Argos son los únicos que serán utilizados para estimar transporte de volumen y calor. Los datos Argo muestran una SC que fluye hacia el sur durante el WM y hacia el norte durante el SM, y un flujo en el océano interior contrario a la corriente. Durante el WM, la SC es somera (~200dbar) y bajo ella fluye una contracorriente. El transporte de calor meridional estimado para datos Argo muestra una inversión estacional. El transporte de calor neto en cada estación tiene la misma dirección que el calor transportado por la SC.

Effects of Ethylene on Secondary Xylem Formation in Arabidopsis thaliana

Ethylene has myriad roles as a plant hormone, ranging from senescence and defending against pathogen attacks to fruit ripening and interactions with other hormones. It has been shown to increase cambial activity in poplar, but the effect on wood formation in Arabidopsis hypocotyl has not previously been studied. The Auxin-Regulated Gene involved in Organ Size (ARGOS), which increases organ size by lengthening the time for cell division, was found to be upregulated by ethylene. We tested the effect of ethylene treatment at 10 and 100 µM ACC on three genotypes of Arabidopsis, Col0 (wild-type), an ARGOS deficient mutant (argos), and ein3-1, an ethylene insensitive mutant. ARGOS expression analysis with qPCR indicated that ACC does induce ARGOS and ARGOS-LIKE (ARL) in the hypocotyl. As seen in poplar, ethylene also decreases stem elongation.Histochemical staining, showed that ethylene changes the way secondary xylem lignifies, causing gaps in lignification around the outer edge of secondary xylem. Our results also implied that ethylene treatment changes the proportion of secondary to total xylem, resulting in less secondary, whereas in poplar, ethylene treatment caused an increase.
