Negli esperimenti con particelle elementari si rende spesso necessario misurarne l’impulso e discriminare il segno della carica con l’ausilio di campi magnetici. Il lavoro presentato in questa tesi si inserisce nell'attività preliminare per la realizzazione di uno spettrometro per muoni con impulso nell'intervallo 0.5-4 GeV, posto all'interno di un campo magnetico in aria. Il prototipo di tracciatore su cui sono state condotte le misure presentate in questa tesi è costituito da diversi piani di barre di scintillatore plastico accoppiate a fotomoltiplicatori al Silicio. Le misure di laboratorio sono state finalizzate a determinare la risoluzione spaziale del prototipo a partire dai segnali di muoni cosmici nelle barre di scintillatore. Dalla ricostruzione delle tracce dei muoni è stata determinata una risoluzione spaziale migliore di 2 mm, che risulta adeguata per lo spettrometro che si vuole realizzare.

Le proprietà reologiche degli alimenti cremosi a fini medici speciali, come quelli per l’alimentazione dei pazienti disfagici, sono influenzate dalla formulazione e dalle tecnologie di produzione. Gli obiettivi di questa tesi, sono stati i seguenti: - individuazione di metodi e parametri reologici empirico-imitativi per la caratterizzazione di campioni di creme alimentari; - studio dell’effetto di differenti quantità di addensante sulle caratteristiche reologiche di creme alimentari; - studio dell’effetto della conservazione in regime di refrigerazione (4° C) o surgelazione (-18°C) sulle caratteristiche reologiche di differenti creme alimentari. Questo al fine di approfondire la conoscenza di tali aspetti per ottimizzare le modalità di produzione e conservazione di differenti creme alimentari destinate all’alimentazione di pazienti disfagici. Dai risultati ottenuti è emerso come tra i metodi ed i parametri empirico-imitativi considerati, quello che sembra essere risultato più idoneo per la determinazione rapida delle caratteristiche di viscosità dei campioni di creme alimentari analizzati è risultato il parametro coesività valutato con test di back extrusion. Per la natura pseudo-plastica dei campioni analizzati, contrariamente a quanto indicato dal produttore, l’utilizzo del viscosimetro vibrazionale non è risultato essere ottimale, per l’instabilità della misura legata alla modifica più o meno importante della viscosità dei sistemi analizzati causata dall’azione delle onde sonore generate dal probe. La caratterizzazione reologica delle creme con differenti contenuti di addensante ha permesso di creare delle cinetiche legate alla modifica delle caratteristiche reologiche empirico-imitative dei sistemi in funzione della quantità di addensate aggiunto. Correlando tali informazioni con il livello di accettazione dei prodotti da parte del paziente disfagico sarà possibile creare degli standard produttivi reologici per la preparazione di prodotti idonei alla sua alimentazione. Le differenti temperature di conservazione dei prodotti, in regime di refrigerazione o congelamento, sembrano non aver influenzato le caratteristiche reologiche delle creme analizzate.

Le lagune costituiscono ecosistemi dinamici ed eterogenei, caratterizzati da comunità biologiche più ristrette rispetto agli ambienti marini confinanti. Si tratta di ambienti delicati e spesso soggetti a disturbo antropico, per cui è importante monitorare lo stato ecologico del loro sistema. Un ottimo strumento per questa valutazione è rappresentato dalle comunità di invertebrati che popolano i sedimenti. Nel presente studio ci si propone di indagare la struttura dei popolamenti macrobentonici nella laguna di Messolonghi (Grecia occidentale), parte di un sistema lagunare di importanza ecologica in tutto il Mediterraneo, come testimoniato dalla designazione di ‘important bird area’ (IPA) nell’ambito del programma sviluppato dall’organizzazione BirdLife International; dalla presenza di siti dichiarati di interesse comunitario (SIC) all’interno della rete di protezione europea “Natura 2000”, nell’ambito della Direttiva Habitat (92/43/CEE). In questo studio viene indagata la struttura della comunità di invertebrati nella laguna e il ruolo della vegetazione e delle condizioni ambientali nel condizionare la disposizione dei popolamenti. A tale scopo vengono applicati indici di diversità che vengono messi in relazione alle specie vegetali presenti e alle caratteristiche del sedimento. I risultati mostrano una comunità diversificata, non regolata da un preciso gradiente ambientale, su cui la principale influenza risulta essere la vegetazione nel suo complesso. Nelle stazioni vegetate si trova un’elevata ricchezza specifica mentre l’equidistribuzione rimane invariata tra habitat vegetato e non. Dalle possibili correlazioni esaminate, risulta che l’abbondanza di alcuni dei taxa più importanti nel differenziamento delle strutture di comunità osservato varia in relazione alla granulometria dei sedimenti e al loro contenuto in azoto e carbonio organico.

L’HTA rappresenta un valido strumento per operare un’analisi dell’impatto clinico,economico e organizzativo di apparecchiature sempre più tecnologicamente sofisticate.Il SIC si inserisce nella valutazione multidisciplinare con le metodologie dell’HTA garantendo appropriatezza e aggiornamento del patrimonio tecnologico per rendere più efficiente l’erogazione delle prestazioni sanitarie.L’HTA dalla valutazione dei bisogni analizza l’applicabilità clinica.Un SIC deve essere in grado di elaborare dati tecnici,gestionali e clinici mediante il software di gestione della manutenzione del parco macchine che nel caso dell’AOSP BO è TMS che gestisce tutte le fasi del ciclo di vita di un’apparecchiatura biomedica.Il ruolo strategico del SIC prevede la programmazione degli investimenti e la valutazione rigorosa nella scelta del rinnovo tecnologico (urgente o programmato) o del potenziamento del parco tecnologico.L’algoritmo analizzato va a individuare diverse categorie di apparecchiature del Sant’Orsola e valuta modello per modello se e quanto risulta efficiente dopo un’attenta analisi il loro trasferimento all’interno del nuovo Polo Cardio Toraco Vascolare inaugurato il 14 dicembre 2015,determinando così un eventuale rinnovo tecnologico,aggiornamento,fuori uso o mantenimento in vita della strumentazione in esame.Le fasi dell’algoritmo finalizzato alla definizione dei recuperi delle apparecchiature medicali nell’ambito dei progetti di riqualificazione tecnologica sono: 1.Normativo (rispondenza a prescrizioni generali relative alla sicurezza e verifiche particolari.Si definisce anche un’analisi dei rischi). 2.Funzionale (si analizzano su TMS l’età dell’apparecchiatura,i tempi di disservizio,il numero e la frequenza delle azioni di manutenzione, le parti consumabili). 3.Economico (costi degli interventi e mantenimento dell'apparecchiatura, spese relative ai pezzi di ricambio o materiale deperibile,contratto di assistenza). 4.Prestazionale (valutazione dello stato del sistema in toto).

Experimental measurements are used to characterize the anisotropy of flow stress in extruded magnesium alloy AZ31 sheet during uniaxial tension tests at temperatures between 350°C and 450°C, and strain rates ranging from 10-5 to 10-2 s-1. The sheet exhibits lower flow stress and higher tensile ductility when loaded with the tensile axis perpendicular to the extrusion direction compared to when it is loaded parallel to the extrusion direction. This anisotropy is found to be grain size, strain rate, and temperature dependent, but is only weakly dependent on texture. A microstructure based model (D. E. Cipoletti, A. F. Bower, P. E. Krajewski, Scr. Mater., 64 (2011) 931–934) is used to explain the origin of the anisotropic behavior. In contrast to room temperature behavior, where anisotropy is principally a consequence of the low resistance to slip on the basal slip system, elevated temperature anisotropy is found to be caused by the grain structure of extruded sheet. The grains are elongated parallel to the extrusion direction, leading to a lower effective grain size perpendicular to the extrusion direction. As a result, grain boundary sliding occurs more readily if the material is loaded perpendicular to the extrusion direction.

BACKGROUND: Coronary stents improve immediate and late results of balloon angioplasty by tacking up dissections and preventing wall recoil. These goals are achieved within weeks after angioplasty, but with current technology stents permanently remain in the artery, with many limitations including the need for long-term antiplatelet treatment to avoid thrombosis. We report a prospective multicentre clinical trial of coronary implantations of absorbable magnesium stents. METHODS: We enrolled 63 patients (44 men; mean age 61.3 [SD 9.5 years]) in eight centres with single de novo lesions in a native coronary artery in a multicentre, non-randomised prospective study. Follow-up included coronary angiography and intravascular ultrasound at 4 months and clinical assessment at 6 months and 12 months. The primary endpoint was cardiac death, non-fatal myocardial infarction, or clinically driven target lesion revascularisation at 4 months FINDINGS: 71 stents, 10-15 mm in length and 3.0-3.5 mm in diameter, were successfully implanted after pre-dilatation in 63 patients. Diameter stenosis was reduced from 61.5 (SD 13.1%) to 12.6 (5.6%) with an acute gain of 1.41 mm (0.46 mm) and in-stent late loss of 1.08 mm (0.49 mm). The ischaemia-driven target lesion revascularisation rate was 23.8% after 4 months, and the overall target lesion revascularisation rate was 45% after 1 year. No myocardial infarction, subacute or late thrombosis, or death occurred. Angiography at 4 months showed an increased diameter stenosis of 48.4 (17.0%). After serial intravascular ultrasound examinations, only small remnants of the original struts were visible, well embedded into the intima. Neointimal growth and negative remodelling were the main operating mechanisms of restenosis. INTERPRETATION: This study shows that biodegradable magnesium stents can achieve an immediate angiographic result similar to the result of other metal stents and can be safely degraded after 4 months. Modifications of stent characteristics with prolonged degradation and drug elution are currently in development.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the degradation rate and long-term vascular responses to the absorbable metal stent (AMS). BACKGROUND: The AMS demonstrated feasibility and safety at 4 months in human coronary arteries. METHODS: The PROGRESS-AMS (Clinical Performance and Angiographic Results of Coronary Stenting) was a prospective, multicenter clinical trial of 63 patients with coronary artery disease who underwent AMS implantation. Angiography and intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) were conducted immediately after AMS deployment and at 4 months. Eight patients who did not require repeat revascularization at 4 months underwent late angiographic and IVUS follow-up from 12 to 28 months. RESULTS: The AMS was well-expanded upon deployment without immediate recoil. The major contributors for restenosis as detected by IVUS at 4 months were: decrease of external elastic membrane volume (42%), extra-stent neointima (13%), and intra-stent neointima (45%). From 4 months to late follow-up, paired IVUS analysis demonstrated complete stent degradation with durability of the 4-month IVUS indexes. The neointima was reduced by 3.6 +/- 5.2 mm(3), with an increase in the stent cross sectional area of 0.5 +/- 1.0 mm(2) (p = NS). The median in-stent minimal lumen diameter was increased from 1.87 to 2.17 mm at long-term follow-up. The median angiographic late loss was reduced from 0.62 to 0.40 mm by quantitative coronary angiography from 4 months to late follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: Intravascular ultrasound imaging supports the safety profile of AMS with degradation at 4 months and maintains durability of the results without any early or late adverse findings. Slower degradation is warranted to provide sufficient radial force to improve long-term patency rates of the AMS.

Implants that can be metabolized by the human body have appeared as one of the most attractive and promising solutions to overcome limitations and improve the features of current implantable devices. Biodegradable polymers and magnesium (Mg) alloys have played an important role writing the history of resorbable implants [1,2]. This paper presents the processing by extrusion/compression moulding, mechanical characterization, thermal characterization and in vitro biocompatibility of a novel generation of resorbable materials based on a polymeric matrix reinforced with metallic Mg particles.

In the last decades, an increasing interest in the research field of wide bandgap semiconductors was observed, mostly due to the progressive approaching of silicon-based devices to their theoretical limits. 4H-SiC is an example among these, and is a mature compound for applications. The main advantages offered 4H-SiC in comparison with silicon are an higher breakdown field, an higher thermal conductivity, a higher operating temperature, very high hardness and melting point, biocompatibility, but also low switching losses in high frequencies applications and lower on-resistances in unipolar devices. Then, 4H-SiC power devices offer great performance improvement; moreover, they can work in hostile environments where silicon power devices cannot function. Ion implantation technology is a key process in the fabrication of almost all kinds of SiC devices, owing to the advantage of a spatially selective doping. This work is dedicated to the electrical investigation of several differently-processed 4H-SiC ion- implanted samples, mainly through Hall effect and space charge spectroscopy experiments. It was also developed the automatic control (Labview) of several experiments. In the work, the effectiveness of high temperature post-implant thermal treatments (up to 2000°C) were studied and compared considering: (i) different methods, (ii) different temperatures and (iii) different duration of the annealing process. Preliminary p + /n and Schottky junctions were also investigated as simple test devices. 1) Heavy doping by ion implantation of single off-axis 4H-SiC layers The electrical investigation is one of the most important characterization of ion-implanted samples, which must be submitted to mandatory post-implant thermal treatment in order to both (i) recover the lattice after ion bombardment, and (ii) address the implanted impurities into lattice sites so that they can effectively act as dopants. Electrical investigation can give fundamental information on the efficiency of the electrical impurity activation. To understand the results of the research it should be noted that: (a) To realize good ohmic contacts it is necessary to obtain spatially defined highly doped regions, which must have conductivity as low as possible. (b) It has been shown that the electrical activation efficiency and the electrical conductivity increase with the annealing temperature increasing. (c) To maximize the layer conductivity, temperatures around 1700°C are generally used and implantation density high till to 10 21 cm -3 . In this work, an original approach, different from (c), is explored by the using very high annealing temperature, around 2000°C, on samples of Al + -implant concentration of the order of 10 20 cm -3 . Several Al + -implanted 4H-SiC samples, resulting of p-type conductivity, were investigated, with a nominal density varying in the range of about 1-5∙10 20 cm -3 and subjected to two different high temperature thermal treatments. One annealing method uses a radiofrequency heated furnace till to 1950°C (Conventional Annealing, CA), the other exploits a microwave field, providing a fast heating rate up to 2000°C (Micro-Wave Annealing, MWA). In this contest, mainly ion implanted p-type samples were investigated, both off-axis and on-axis <0001> semi-insulating 4H-SiC. Concerning p-type off-axis samples, a high electrical activation of implanted Al (50-70%) and a compensation ratio below 10% were estimated. In the work, the main sample processing parameters have been varied, as the implant temperature, CA annealing duration, and heating/cooling rates, and the best values assessed. MWA method leads to higher hole density and lower mobility than CA in equivalent ion implanted layers, resulting in lower resistivity, probably related to the 50°C higher annealing temperature. An optimal duration of the CA treatment was estimated in about 12-13 minutes. A RT resistivity on the lowest reported in literature for this kind of samples, has been obtained. 2) Low resistivity data: variable range hopping Notwithstanding the heavy p-type doping levels, the carrier density remained less than the critical one required for a semiconductor to metal transition. However, the high carrier densities obtained was enough to trigger a low temperature impurity band (IB) conduction. In the heaviest doped samples, such a conduction mechanism persists till to RT, without significantly prejudice the mobility values. This feature can have an interesting technological fall, because it guarantee a nearly temperature- independent carrier density, it being not affected by freeze-out effects. The usual transport mechanism occurring in the IB conduction is the nearest neighbor hopping: such a regime is effectively consistent with the resistivity temperature behavior of the lowest doped samples. In the heavier doped samples, however, a trend of the resistivity data compatible with a variable range hopping (VRH) conduction has been pointed out, here highlighted for the first time in p-type 4H-SiC. Even more: in the heaviest doped samples, and in particular, in those annealed by MWA, the temperature dependence of the resistivity data is consistent with a reduced dimensionality (2D) of the VRH conduction. In these samples, TEM investigation pointed out faulted dislocation loops in the basal plane, whose average spacing along the c-axis is comparable with the optimal length of the hops in the VRH transport. This result suggested the assignment of such a peculiar behavior to a kind of spatial confinement into a plane of the carrier hops. 3) Test device the p + -n junction In the last part of the work, the electrical properties of 4H-SiC diodes were also studied. In this case, a heavy Al + ion implantation was realized on n-type epilayers, according to the technological process applied for final devices. Good rectification properties was shown from these preliminary devices in their current-voltage characteristics. Admittance spectroscopy and deep level transient spectroscopy measurements showed the presence of electrically active defects other than the dopants ones, induced in the active region of the diodes by ion implantation. A critical comparison with the literature of these defects was performed. Preliminary to such an investigation, it was assessed the experimental set up for the admittance spectroscopy and current-voltage investigation and the automatic control of these measurements.
