ABSTRACT Urban Green spaces are now recognized to be major contributors to inhabitants’ quality of life and to urban sustainability. Their functional value is dependent on the existence of an efficient green structure, with multiple spaces, that can meet inhabitant’s expectations while having a coherent relation with the landscape, alongside with their individual attributes. This Thesis applies a methodology for the analysis of the Green Infrastructure on different levels, taking into account the interpretation of its elements and their relation to landscape processes, alongside with the evaluation of the answer to inhabitants’ needs and expectations. The different assumptions and methods are tested in the city of Bragança, a Portuguese medium sized city. Among the results from the case study, it is argued that the urban expansion of the traditional city lead to the proliferation not only of useful urban green spaces but also of vacant land. This condition has been increased by land use planning options that overstate the offer for residential areas, most of them not developed. Inhabitants’ relation with the green infrastructure is mostly dependent on larger local public green spaces, which offer a wide range of natural and artificial elements, addressing the needs of multiple users. The spatial distribution of urban green spaces also has a major influence on users’ frequency in the use of such spaces and in the means of travel that they choose.

ABSTRACT. Based on the study of the void within the Berlin Wall at the Lab in the first semester as linear infrastructure and anomalous space, this research aims to study the gaps generated by linear infrastructures that pass through our cities, marginal spaces, forgotten or disconnected from the urban network but full of identity and meaning where new opportunities can be created for the public space. Through a case study will analyze the potential of such gaps as new spaces for the community through its re-signification and its connection with the network of urban public spaces.

ABSTRACT This thesis makes a research about the ability of art as an element of transformation inside the city. The increasingly common practice of ephemeral art installations in urban public spaces is provoking real changes in the cities landscape. In the case of Madrid the proliferation of ephemeral artworks in the most busy streets and squares has been brought into life as an intense activity from the first years of the 21st century. This research paper studies a span of five years which have been quite representative to Madrid (2007-2011) because of the big amount of meaningful interventions that have taken place both as temporary art and as urban art in its public spaces. Through data-gathering, analysis, classification and assessment of almost three hundred examples of ephemeral art forms in Madrid, several conclusions can be stated on the impact of art in transforming certain urban processes. This evidence of the existence of an urban art movement in the 21st century opens a necessary debate subject at this moment: the regeneration of urban space through art. This thesis aims at conceptually describe this newborn artistic expressions of art, seen as a driving force for providing more direct and participatory urban decision-making processes.

ABSTRACT Houses of the 20th century built by the sea – a unique setting which gives rise to their expression – follow the topography of the land they occupy in its descent towards the sea, and they organize spaces which give views of the maritime horizon. The horizon brings us face to face with the unknown. The sea view provokes a desire to cross it, to travel. The presence of the sea defines a peaceful, epicurean way of life, with origins in the Roman otium, which architectural travellers – who accompany us through the thesis – translate into their most intimate retreats. They experiment with changes in concepts and techniques, which are easily transferred to the architecture of the seaside house since the beginnings of the Modern Movement. Their living spaces allow us to discover common strategies in the most modern responses. The architect with a seaside project arrives at the site, looks towards the horizon, then walks uphill and chooses a strategic point; then with his drawing board he retraces his steps, he sets the position and then draws in the elements that make up the house that seeks a sea view. The number of potential situations and locations is infinite; certain common spatial accordances are defined in land which is occupied due to the presence of the sea. Comparison of all the houses – 20th century emblems – throws up multiple variations of view and open spaces, and ways of creating settings with common criteria so as to command the vision of the sea. Interiors which open up to the panorama, spaces whose windows seek their view in the expanse of the horizon, openings and closures. We recognise determinant factors in the territory to which the villas respond, architectural categories which give a seaside solution to the search for the modern, the topography, the view, and the open space. The houses share the idea of dominating the landscape from the highest point, and in some areas typology and topography are inverted, thus confirming a common criteria based on the reading of the ground as a conse quence of the search for the view space. Open spaces stand out in all the villas – spaces open to the outdoor air - some are wrapped, some arcaded, doors to the horizon which open up to the exterior, on the roof of the house. There are open and covered spaces, spaces between the exterior and interior, on platforms with banks and surrounding patios, enclosures and open rooms. We discover an achievement of the 20th century in the positive and negative spaces which translate and play with the setting, which occupy or are extracted from built contours and which obtain intermediate spaces in the search for the relationship with the sea. The tools used are the author’s drawings of the houses visited, the cast of travelling companions and their travels, the knowledge gained from study of the projects. Through comparison by means of partial approaches, the drawings define the view of the sea, the occupation mode and the way of relating to the landscape. Architecture for living by the sea in the 20th century, carried out both by and for the architects, shapes the land and constructs the view, creating open spaces in the relationship between the house and the sea surroundings.

Basalts in Hole 648B, located in the rift valley of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge at 23°N in crust estimated to be less than 100,000 years old, are mainly fresh, but small amounts of secondary phases are found on fracture surfaces and in alteration halos within the rocks. The halos are defined by dark bands 1-4 mm thick that have developed parallel to fracture surfaces or pillow margins and which in some cases have migrated some centimeters into the rock. The dark bands are the principal locus of secondary phases. The secondary phases are olive-green and yellow protoceladonites, of composition and structure intermediate between celadonite and iron-rich saponite, red (Mn-poor) to opaque (Mn-rich) iron oxyhydroxides, mixtures of protoceladonite and iron oxyhydroxide, and rare manganese oxides. These phases occur mainly as linings or fillings of open spaces in the basalt within the dark bands. Sulfides and intersertal glass are the only primary phases that can be seen to have been altered. Where dark bands have migrated into the rock, the rock behind the advancing band is almost devoid of secondary phases, implying redissolution. The potassium and magnesium in the secondary phases could have been supplied from ambient seawater. The aluminum in the protoceladonites must have been derived from local reaction of intergranular glass. The source of iron and silica could have been intergranular glass or low temperature mineralizing solutions of the type responsible for the formation of deposits of manganese oxides and iron oxyhydroxides and silicates on the seafloor.

Stylization is a method of ornamental plant use usually applied in urban open space and garden design based on aesthetic consideration. Stylization can be seen as a nature-imitating ornamental plant application which evokes the scenery rather than an ecological plant application which assists the processes and functions observed in the nature. From a different point of view, stylization of natural or semi-natural habitats can sometimes serve as a method for preserving the physiognomy of the plant associations that may be affected by the climate change of the 21st century. The vulnerability of the Hungarian habitats has thus far been examined by the researchers only from the botanical point of view but not in terms of its landscape design value. In Hungary coniferous forests are edaphic and classified on this basis. The General National Habitat Classification System (Á-NÉR) distinguishes calcareous Scots pine forests and acidofrequent coniferous forests. The latter seems to be highly sensitive to climate change according to ecological models. The physiognomy and species pool of its subtypes are strongly determined by the dominant coniferous species that can be Norway spruce (Picea abies) or Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). We are going to discuss the methodology of stylization of climate sensitive habitats and briefly refer to acidofrequent coniferous forests as a case study. In the course of stylization those coniferous and deciduous tree species of the studied habitat that are water demanding should be substituted by drought tolerant ones with similar characteristics. A list of the proposed taxa is going to be given.

As natural areas, agricultural lands, and open spaces continue to be developed at unprecedented rates, it is important for land conservation professionals to understand the individuals who might play a role in permanently protecting these lands and their ecological services. Many factors have been shown to influence land protection decisions among private owners, including land-use activities, demographic characteristics, and environmental intention and behavior. With the hypothesis that individuals already involved in land conservation programs would be candidates for permanent protection, we set out to model conservation easement decisions within a group of participants in southern Indiana’s Classified Forest and Wildlands Program (ICFWP). We used a mailed questionnaire to survey 500 landowners, garnering 308 responses, about their interest in conservation easements. Our results indicated significant positive relationships between interest in conservation easements with variables representing perception of landscape change, outdoor recreation behavior as an adult, and environmental organization membership. By better understanding the ways these factors promote permanent land-use decisions, land conservation professionals can better allocate limited resources through strategic investments in targeting and outreach.

This monograph attempts to show that Heidegger’s fourfold is neither as mysterious as some commentators have claimed, nor is it inconsistent with the position that Heidegger held when he wrote Being and Time. After a brief introduction, I proceed to an analysis of earth. In the second chapter, I argue that Heidegger’s view on this subject is, in many respects, heavily indebted to his interpretation of Aristotle. The third chapter is an analysis of sky. This chapter is both an investigation into the many aspects of sky and an analysis of the relation between sky and Heidegger’s various uses of “world” in Being and Time. The fourth chapter is an analysis of the most interpretively difficult member of the fourfold, gods. Gods allow for open spaces and ground fields of meaningfulness. The fifth chapter is an analysis of mortals. This chapter focuses heavily on Heidegger’s analysis of death in Being and Time, his middle works, and his later works. The most important insight into the understanding of the relationship between Heidegger’s earlier and later work is presented in this chapter. Namely, here I argue that ownedness and releasement to things are not opposed to one another. The claim that these two ways of being are opposed to one another is the usual grounds for the claim that Heidegger radically changed his views between the time that he wrote Being and Time and his later works.
