The Moorea Coral Reef Long Term Ecological Research project funded by the US National Science Foundation includes multidisciplinary studies of physical processes driving ecological dynamics across the fringing reef, back reef, and fore reef habitats of Moorea, French Polynesia. A network of oceanographic moorings and a variety of other approaches have been used to investigate the biological and biogeochemical aspects of water transport and retention processes in this system. There is evidence to support the hypothesis that a low-frequency counterclockwise flow around the island is superimposed on the relatively strong alongshore currents on each side of the island. Despite the rapid flow and flushing of the back reef, waters over the reef display chemical and biological characteristics distinct from those offshore. The patterns include higher nutrient and lower dissolved organic carbon concentrations, distinct microbial community compositions among habitats, and reef assemblages of zooplankton that exhibit migration behavior, suggesting multigenerational residence on the reef. Zooplankton consumption by planktivorous fish on the reef reflects both retention of reef-associated taxa and capture by the reef community of resources originating offshore. Coral recruitment and population genetics of reef fishes point to retention of larvae within the system and high recruitment levels from local adult populations. The combined results suggest that a broad suite of physical and biological processes contribute to high retention of externally derived and locally produced organic materials within this island coral reef system. © 2013 by The Oceanography Society. In this paper, an introduction is provided to some of the components of China's transport system. The authors include the urban rail transit systems, the highway transport systems and its competition for China's railways and the reform of China's railway industry. This is the second of two papers on the situation of rail transport in China.

We have measured the electrical transport properties of mats of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) as a function of applied electric and magnetic fields. We find that at low temperatures the resistance as a function of temperature R(T) follows the Mott variable range hopping (VRH) formula for hopping in three dimensions. Measurement of the electric field dependence of the resistance R(E) allows for the determination of the Bohr radius of a localized state a = 700nm. The magnetoresistance (MR) of SWNT mat samples is large and negative at all temperatures and fields studied. The low field negative MR is proportional to H2, in agreement with variable range hopping in two or three dimensions. 3D VRH indicates good intertube contacts, implying that the localization is due to the disorder experienced by the individual tubes. The 3D localization radius gives a measure of the ID localization length on the individual tubes, which we estimate to be >700 nm. Implications for the electron-phonon mean free path are discussed.

The electrochemical oxidation of N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-p-phenylenediamine (TMPD) has been studied by cyclic voltammetry and potential step chronoamperometry at 303 K in five ionic liquids, namely [C(2)mim] [NTf2], [C(4)mim] [NTf2] [C(4)mpyrr] [NTf2] [C(4)mim] [BF4], and [C(4)mim] [PF6] (where [C(n)mim](+) = 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium, [C(4)mpyrr](+) = N-butyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium, [NTf2](-) = bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, [BF4](-) = tetrafluoroborate, and [PF6](-) = hexafluorophosphate). Diffusion coefficients, D, of 4.87, 3.32, 2.05, 1.74, and 1.34 x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1) and heterogeneous electron-transfer rate constants, k(0), of 0.0109, 0.0103, 0.0079, 0.0066, and 0.0059 cm s(-1) were calculated for TMPD in [C(2)mim] [NTf2], [C(4)mim] [NTf2], [C(4)mpyrr] [NTf2], [C(4)mim] [BF4], and [C(4)mim] [PF6], respectively, at 303 K. The oxidation of TMPD in [C4mim][PF6] was also carried out at increasing temperatures from 303 to 343 K, with an activation energy for diffusion of 32.3 kJ mol(-1). k(0) was found to increase systematically with increasing temperature, and an activation energy of 31.4 kJ mol(-1) was calculated. The study was extended to six other p-phenylenediamines with alkyl/phenyl group substitutions. D and k(0) values were calculated for these compounds in [C(2)mim] [NTf2], and it was found that k(0) showed no obvious relationship with the hydrodynamic radius, r.

Attenuation processes controlling virus fate and transport in the vadose zone of karstified systems can strongly influence groundwater quality. This research compares the breakthrough of two bacteriophage tracers (H40/1 and T7), with contrasting properties, at subsurface monitoring points following application onto an overlying composite sequence of thin organic soil and weathered limestone (epikarst). Short pulse multi-tracer test results revealed that T7 (Source concentration, Co=1.8x106pfu/mL) and H40/1(Co=5.9x106pfu/mL) could reach sampling points 10m below ground less than 30 minutes after tracer application. Contrasting deposition rates, determined from simulated tracer responses, reflected the potential of the ground to differentially attenuate viruses. Prolonged application of both T7 (Co=2.3x104pfu/mL) and H40/1 (Co=1.3x105pfu/mL) over a five hour period during a subsequent test, in which ionic strength levels observed at monitoring points rose consistently, corresponded to a rapid rise in T7 levels, followed by a gradual decline before the end of tracer injection; this reflected reaction-limited deposition in the system. T7’s response contrasted with that of H40/1, whose concentration remained constant over a three hour period before declining dramatically prior to the end of tracer injection. Subsequent application of lower ionic strength tracer-free flush water generated a rapid rise in H40/1 levels and a more gradual release of T7. Results highlight the benefits of employing prolonged injection multi-tracer tests for identifying processes not apparent from conventional short pulse tests. Study findings demonstrate that despite rapid transport rates, the epikarst is capable of physicochemical filtration of viruses and their remobilization, depending on virus type and hydrochemical conditions.
