To better understand destruction mechanisms of wake-vortices behind aircraft, the point vortex method for stability (inviscid) used by Crow is here compared with viscous modal global stability analysis of the linearized Navier-Stokes equations acting on a two-dimensional basic flow, i.e. BiGlobal stability analysis. The fact that the BiGlobal method is viscous, and uses a flnite área vortex model, gives rise to results somewhat different from the point vortex model. It adds more parameters to the problem, but is more realistic.

The NAACP’s legal team, which eventually included Thurgood Marshall, had a strategy in mind for confronting the Plessy v Ferguson “separate but equal” Supreme Court decision of 1896. Walter White, the NAACP President assisted Houston in developing the plan. By concentrating on the “equal” aspect of Plessy, the NAACP would attempt to make “separate but equal” a financial impossibility for states toeing the line of “Jim Crow” laws. In the words of Charles Hamilton Houston, “we are going to bleed them white.”

Following the decision, northern newspapers hailed it as “the Supreme Court speaking out in defense of the quality of human rights.” The Kansas City Call, one of the leading black newspapers in Missouri, declared, “If keeping the races separate is so important to Missourians that coeducation is unthinkable then let them count the cost!” The NAACP’s long-term plan for casting financial burden upon the Jim Crow states was now a reality.

At least 50 species of birds are represented in 241 bird bones from five late Pleistocene and Holocene archaeological sites on New Ireland (Bismarck Archipelago, Papua New Guinea). The bones include only two of seabirds and none of migrant shorebirds or introduced species. Of the 50 species, at least 12 (petrel, hawk, megapode, quail, four rails, cockatoo, two owls, and crow) are not part of the current avifauna and have not been recorded previously from New Ireland. Larger samples of bones undoubtedly would indicate more extirpated species and refine the chronology of extinction. Humans have lived on New Ireland for ca. 35,000 years, whereas most of the identified bones are 15,000 to 6,000 years old. It is suspected that most or all of New Ireland’s avian extinction was anthropogenic, but this suspicion remains undetermined. Our data show that significant prehistoric losses of birds, which are well documented on Pacific islands more remote than New Ireland, occurred also on large, high, mostly forested islands close to New Guinea.

The human mutation rate for base substitutions is much higher in males than in females and increases with paternal age. This effect is mainly, if not entirely, due to the large number of cell divisions in the male germ line. The mutation-rate increase is considerably greater than expected if the mutation rate were simply proportional to the number of cell divisions. In contrast, those mutations that are small deletions or rearrangements do not show the paternal age effect. The observed increase with the age of the father in the incidence of children with different dominant mutations is variable, presumably the result of different mixtures of base substitutions and deletions. In Drosophila, the rate of mutations causing minor deleterious effects is estimated to be about one new mutation per zygote. Because of a larger number of genes and a much larger amount of DNA, the human rate is presumably higher. Recently, the Drosophila data have been reanalyzed and the mutation-rate estimate questioned, but I believe that the totality of evidence supports the original conclusion. The most reasonable way in which a species can cope with a high mutation rate is by quasi-truncation selection, whereby a number of mutant genes are eliminated by one “genetic death.”

Inflammatory processes in chronic rejection remain a serious clinical problem in organ transplantation. Activated cellular infiltrate produces high levels of both superoxide and nitric oxide. These reactive oxygen species interact to form peroxynitrite, a potent oxidant that can modify proteins to form 3-nitrotyrosine. We identified enhanced immunostaining for nitrotyrosine localized to tubular epithelium of chronically rejected human renal allografts. Western blot analysis of rejected tissue demonstrated that tyrosine nitration was restricted to a few specific polypeptides. Immunoprecipitation and amino acid sequencing techniques identified manganese superoxide dismutase, the major antioxidant enzyme in mitochondria, as one of the targets of tyrosine nitration. Total manganese superoxide dismutase protein was increased in rejected kidney, particularly in the tubular epithelium; however, enzymatic activity was significantly decreased. Exposure of recombinant human manganese superoxide dismutase to peroxynitrite resulted in a dose-dependent (IC50 = 10 microM) decrease in enzymatic activity and concomitant increase in tyrosine nitration. Collectively, these observations suggest a role for peroxynitrite during development and progression of chronic rejection in human renal allografts. In addition, inactivation of manganese superoxide dismutase by peroxynitrite may represent a general mechanism that progressively increases the production of peroxynitrite, leading to irreversible oxidative injury to mitochondria.

This Article examines state court cases involving the right to arms, during the first century following ratification of the Amendment in 1791. This is not the first article to survey some of those cases. This Article includes additional cases, and details the procedural postures and facts, not only the holdings. The Article closely examines how the Supreme Court integrated the nineteenth century arms cases into Heller and McDonald to shape modern Second Amendment law. Part I briefly explains two English cases which greatly influenced American legal understandings. Semayne’s Case is the foundation of “castle doctrine” — the right to home security which includes the right of armed self-defense in the home. Sir John Knight’s Case fortified the tradition of the right to bear arms, providing that the person must bear arms in a non-terrifying manner. Part II examines American antebellum cases; these are the cases to which Heller looked for guidance on the meaning of the Second Amendment. Part III looks at cases from Reconstruction and the early years of Jim Crow, through 1891. As with the antebellum cases, the large majority of post-war cases are from the Southeast, which during the nineteenth century was the region most ardent for gun control. The heart of gun control country was Tennessee and Arkansas; courts there resisted some infringements of the right to arms, but eventually gave up. Heller and McDonald did not look to the Jim Crow cases as constructive precedents on the Second Amendment.

Connaître le sexe d’un oiseau est important pour divers domaines notamment pour les vétérinaires, les écologistes ainsi que pour les éleveurs d’oiseaux qui veulent former des couples qui serviront à la reproduction. Plusieurs espèces d’oiseaux, juvéniles et adultes, n’ont pas de dimorphisme sexuel. L’utilisation de l’ADN est une façon rapide de déterminer le sexe à partir d’un échantillon de sang, de muscle, de plumes ou de fèces. Par contre, la méthode devrait être validée pour chaque espèce et idéalement, standardisée. Le premier objectif de cette étude est de développer une méthode de sexage par séquençage des oiseaux à partir des séquences du gène CHD, en utilisant les oiseaux de proie et les perroquets vus en clinique au Québec. Un deuxième objectif est de faire l’identification de l’espèce à sexer, à partir du gène mitochondrial COX-1 et aussi à partir des séquences CHD-Z et CHD-W, utilisés pour le sexage. Un troisième objectif est d’évaluer les séquences sorties (CHD-Z, CHD-W et COX-1) en vue d’une étude phylogénique. Une extraction d’ADN a été effectuée chez 27 espèces de perroquets, 34 espèces d’oiseaux de proie, une corneille (Corvus brachyrhynchos) et un poulet (Gallus gallus). Une amplification par PCR a été exécutée pour les exons partiels 23 et 24 du gène CHD. Le séquençage de cet amplicon permettait de savoir s’il s’agissait d’un mâle (séquence simple CHD-Z) ou d’une femelle (séquences CHD-Z et CHD-W qui se chevauchent). Afin d’avoir des séquences CHD-W distinctes, un sous-clonage a été fait chez les femelles de chaque espèce. De cette manière, les séquences partielles du gène CHD, Z et W, ont été trouvées pour les espèces échantillonnées. Une étude phylogénique a été effectuée avec les séquences de COX-1, CHD-Z et CHD-W grâce au site « Clustal-Omega ». La méthode de sexage des oiseaux par séquençage du gène CHD est standard et efficace. Le gène COX-1 permet une meilleure identification des espèces parentes et le gène CHD-Z est le plus utile pour étudier la phylogénie profonde.
