The purpose of this paper is to introduce to the reader, an iron deposit in the Princeton district, about 19 miles northeast by highway from Philipsburg, Montana. Heretofore there has been no written literature on this deposit. It is also intended to investigate the economic possibilities of iron ore in general in the State of Montana.

The purchase and continued operation of the Mike Horse mine in the Heddleston district, by the American Smelting and Refining Company, gives the Blackfoot Valley a renewed promise of a prosperous future in its role as a mining district. In the past, large amounts of placer gold were recovered from the gulches of the area, however, because of the transportation facilities, only the upper portions of a few lodes were exploited by the early miners.

A deposit of kyanite, an aluminum silicate mineral used in the ceramic industry, occurs in the low foothills of the Gravelly range about 10 miles south of Ennis, Montana. This study deals primarily with the character and origin of the deposit, and its relationship to the surrounding rocks.

The five counties discussed in this paper compose the northernmost and westernmost counties in Montana. On the eastern boundary are Glacier National Park and the Continental Divide; on the southern boundary are Missoula and Powell counties; Idaho lies on the southwestern and western side; and the Canadian border lies along the northern edge. The region is on the Pacific Ocean side of the Rocky Mountains. Three major rivers, the Clark Fork, the Flathead, and the Kootenai drain this area into the Columbia River.

The Tuxedo mining district lies fifteen miles west of Butte on the south east end of Deer Lodge valley. Prospecting and mining has been carried on in this district for about 20 years. As a result many pits have been dug, several adits have been driven, and two or three shallow shafts have been sunk.

The area to be surveyed was divided up into sections add each crew of three or four members was assigned one of these sections. The first two days were spent in studying and mapping the geologic section in the South Boulder Canyon where we obtained practice in alidade surveying, brunton, pacing, and auto traverse.

The Ruby Gulch Mine, owned and operated by the Ruby Gulch Mining Company, Zortman, Montana, is one of the most important low-grade gold producers in the state. Situated in the Little Rocky Mountains, the mine has had an interesting history since its discovery shortly before the turn of the century.

Most of the work has been due to the economic importance of the system as an oil producer in this region. Oil production from strata of Pennsylvanian age is rather recent history; and therefore, much of the available information is localized and incomplete.

Dr. John Dilles discusses the geochemistry of the porphyry Cu-Mo resource found at at Butte, Montana. The porphyry formed from dilute magmatic fluids that contained 1,000s of ppm Cu between 66 and 64 Ma, and at depths of ~8 km. The porphory is zoned from innermost Cu (Ag) ore; to mixed intermediate Cu (Zn, Ag) / Zn-MJn-Ag (Cu, Pb, Au) ore; to an outer Mn-Ag (Pb) ore that grades to barren quartz.

The field work was conducted in areas adjacent to Whitehall, Montana, as has been the custom for the past several years. Instruction in the proper use of the telescopic and open sight alidades, and the Brunton compass for surveying geologic features was given. Advantages of pacing and speedometer mapping were pointed out and used.
