The spatial patterns of diffuse, primitive, classic (cored) and compact (burnt-out) subtypes of beta/A4 deposits were studied in coronal sections of the frontal lobe and hippocampus, including the adjacent gyri, in nine cases of Alzheimer's disease (AD). If the more mature deposits were derived from the diffuse deposits then there should be a close association between their spatial patterns in a brain region. In the majority of tissues examined, all deposit subtypes occurred in clusters which varied in dimension from 200 to 6400 microns. In many tissues, the clusters appeared to be regularly spaced parallel to the pia or alveus. The mean dimension of the primitive deposit clusters was greater than those of the diffuse, classic and compact types. In about 60% of cortical tissues examined, the clusters of primitive and diffuse deposits were not in phase, i.e. they alternated along the cortical strip. Clusters of classic deposits appeared to be distributed independently of the diffuse deposit clusters. Cluster size of the primitive deposits was positively correlated with the density of the primitive deposits in a tissue but no such relationship could be detected for the diffuse deposits. This study suggested that there was a complex relationship between the clusters of the different subtypes of beta/A4 deposits. If the diffuse deposits do give rise to the primitive and classic varieties then factors unrelated to the initial deposition of beta/A4 in the form of diffuse plaques were important in the formation of the mature deposits.

There is a paucity of literature regarding the construction and operation of corporate identity at the stakeholder group level. This article examines corporate identity from the perspective of an individual stakeholder group, namely, front-line employees. A stakeholder group that is central to the development of an organizationâs corporate identity as it spans an organizationâs boundaries, frequently interacts with both internal and external stakeholders, and influences a firmâs financial performance by building customer loyalty and satisfaction. The article reviews the corporate identity, branding, services and social identity literatures to address how corporate identity manifests within the front-line employee stakeholder group, identifying what components comprise front-line employee corporate identity and assessing what contribution front-line employees make to constructing a strong and enduring corporate identity for an organization. In reviewing the literature the article develops propositions that, in conjunction with a conceptual model, constitute the generation of theory that is recommended for empirical testing.

Simulations suggest that photomixing in resonant laser-assisted field emission could be used to generate and detect signals from DC to 100 THz. It is the objective of this research to develop a system to efficiently couple the microwave signals generated on an emitting tip by optical mixing. Four different methods for coupling are studied. Tapered Goubau line is found to be the most suitable. Goubau line theory is reviewed, and programs are written to determine loss on the line. From this, Goubau tapers are designed that have a 1:100 bandwidth. These tapers are finally simulated using finite difference time domain, to find the optimum design parameters. Tapered Goubau line is an effective method for coupling power from the field emitting tip. It has large bandwidth, and acceptable loss. Another important consideration is that it is the easiest to manufacture of the four possibilities studied, an important quality for any prototype.

This paper presents a study of the integration of filters and microstrip antennas, yielding devices named as filtennas for applications in wireless communications systems. The design of these structures is given from the observation of filtennas based integration between horn antennas and frequency selective surfaces (FSS), used in the band X. The choice of microstrip line structures for the development of a new configuration filtennas justifies the wide application of these transmission lines, in recent decades, always resulting in the production of circuit structures with planar light-weight, compact size, low cost, easy to construct and particularly easy to integrate with other microwave circuits. In addition, the antenna structure considered for the composition of filtennas consists of a planar monopole microstrip to microstrip filters integrated in the feed line of the antenna. In particular, are considered elliptical monopole microstrip (operating in UWB UWB) microstrip filters and (in structures with associated sections in series and / or coupled). In addition, the monopole microstrip has a proper bandwidth and omnidirectional radiation pattern, such that its integration with microstrip filters results in decreased bandwidth, but with slight changes in the radiation pattern. The methods used in the analysis of monopoles, and filters were filtennas finite elements and moments by using commercial software Ansoft Designer and HFSS Ansoft, respectively. Specifically, we analyze the main characteristics of filtennas, such as radiation pattern, gain and bandwidth. Were designed, constructed and measures, several structures filtennas, for validation of the simulated results. Were also used computational tools (CAD) in the process of building prototypes of planar monopoles, filters and filtennas. The prototypes were constructed on substrates of glass-fiber (FR4). Measurements were performed at the Laboratory for Telecommunications UFRN. Comparisons were made between simulated and measured, and found good agreement in the cases considered

The main focus of this research is to design and develop a high performance linear actuator based on a four bar mechanism. The present work includes the detailed analysis (kinematics and dynamics), design, implementation and experimental validation of the newly designed actuator. High performance is characterized by the acceleration of the actuator end effector. The principle of the newly designed actuator is to network the four bar rhombus configuration (where some bars are extended to form an X shape) to attain high acceleration. Firstly, a detailed kinematic analysis of the actuator is presented and kinematic performance is evaluated through MATLAB simulations. A dynamic equation of the actuator is achieved by using the Lagrangian dynamic formulation. A SIMULINK control model of the actuator is developed using the dynamic equation. In addition, Bond Graph methodology is presented for the dynamic simulation. The Bond Graph model comprises individual component modeling of the actuator along with control. Required torque was simulated using the Bond Graph model. Results indicate that, high acceleration (around 20g) can be achieved with modest (3 N-m or less) torque input. A practical prototype of the actuator is designed using SOLIDWORKS and then produced to verify the proof of concept. The design goal was to achieve the peak acceleration of more than 10g at the middle point of the travel length, when the end effector travels the stroke length (around 1 m). The actuator is primarily designed to operate in standalone condition and later to use it in the 3RPR parallel robot. A DC motor is used to operate the actuator. A quadrature encoder is attached with the DC motor to control the end effector. The associated control scheme of the actuator is analyzed and integrated with the physical prototype. From standalone experimentation of the actuator, around 17g acceleration was achieved by the end effector (stroke length was 0.2m to 0.78m). Results indicate that the developed dynamic model results are in good agreement. Finally, a Design of Experiment (DOE) based statistical approach is also introduced to identify the parametric combination that yields the greatest performance. Data are collected by using the Bond Graph model. This approach is helpful in designing the actuator without much complexity.

Radiotherapy (RT) has recently evolved with the emergence of heavy ion radiations or new fractionation schemes of photon therapy, which modify the dose rate of treatment delivery. The aim of the present study was then to evaluate the in vitro influence of a ultra-high dose rate comparing them with standard dose rate. In this regard, a radioresistant SK-MEL-28 cell line were irradiated with x-ray in order to have a total dose of 2 and 4 Gy, at two different dose rate. The ultra-high dose rate is a specific property of the dense plasma focus (DPF) device, which has pulsed operation and thus gives short and highly energetic pulses of multiple types of rays and particles, in this case, we focused our study on the influence of X-rays. While a low dose rate is obtained with conventional X-ray tube. In this study it results that a ultra-high dose rate enhances radiosensitivity of melanoma cells while reducing the adhesion, proliferation and migration ability of cells.

Structured parallel programming, and in particular programming models using the algorithmic skeleton or parallel design pattern concepts, are increasingly considered to be the only viable means of supporting effective development of scalable and efficient parallel programs. Structured parallel programming models have been assessed in a number of works in the context of performance. In this paper we consider how the use of structured parallel programming models allows knowledge of the parallel patterns present to be harnessed to address both performance and energy consumption. We consider different features of structured parallel programming that may be leveraged to impact the performance/energy trade-off and we discuss a preliminary set of experiments validating our claims.

This chapter describes a parallel optimization technique that incorporates a distributed load-balancing algorithm and provides an extremely fast solution to the problem of load-balancing adaptive unstructured meshes. Moreover, a parallel graph contraction technique can be employed to enhance the partition quality and the resulting strategy outperforms or matches results from existing state-of-the-art static mesh partitioning algorithms. The strategy can also be applied to static partitioning problems. Dynamic procedures have been found to be much faster than static techniques, to provide partitions of similar or higher quality and, in comparison, involve the migration of a fraction of the data. The method employs a new iterative optimization technique that balances the workload and attempts to minimize the interprocessor communications overhead. Experiments on a series of adaptively refined meshes indicate that the algorithm provides partitions of an equivalent or higher quality to static partitioners (which do not reuse the existing partition) and much more quickly. The dynamic evolution of load has three major influences on possible partitioning techniques; cost, reuse, and parallelism. The unstructured mesh may be modified every few time-steps and so the load-balancing must have a low cost relative to that of the solution algorithm in between remeshing.

Conservation and management measures for exploited fish species rely on our ability to monitor variations in population abundance. In the case of the eastern stock of Atlantic bluefin tuna (ABFT), recent changes in management policies have strongly affected the reliability of fishery-dependent indicators due to drastic changes in fishing season/area, fisheries selectivity and strategy. However, fishery-independent indices of abundance are rare for large pelagic fish, and obtaining them is often costly and labor intensive. Here, we show that scientific aerial surveys are an appropriate tool for monitoring juvenile bluefin tuna abundance in the Mediterranean. We present an abundance index based on 62 aerial surveys conducted since 2000, using 2 statistical approaches to deal with the sampling strategy: line and strip transects. Both approaches showed a significant increase in juvenile ABFT abundance in recent years, resulting from the recovery plan established in 2007. Nonetheless, the estimates from the line transect method appear to be more robust and stable. This study provides essential information for fisheries management. Expanding the spatial coverage to other nursery grounds would further increase the reliability and representativeness of this index.

When a task must be executed in a remote or dangerous environment, teleoperation systems may be employed to extend the influence of the human operator. In the case of manipulation tasks, haptic feedback of the forces experienced by the remote (slave) system is often highly useful in improving an operator's ability to perform effectively. In many of these cases (especially teleoperation over the internet and ground-to-space teleoperation), substantial communication latency exists in the control loop and has the strong tendency to cause instability of the system. The first viable solution to this problem in the literature was based on a scattering/wave transformation from transmission line theory. This wave transformation requires the designer to select a wave impedance parameter appropriate to the teleoperation system. It is widely recognized that a small value of wave impedance is well suited to free motion and a large value is preferable for contact tasks. Beyond this basic observation, however, very little guidance exists in the literature regarding the selection of an appropriate value. Moreover, prior research on impedance selection generally fails to account for the fact that in any realistic contact task there will simultaneously exist contact considerations (perpendicular to the surface of contact) and quasi-free-motion considerations (parallel to the surface of contact). The primary contribution of the present work is to introduce an approximate linearized optimum for the choice of wave impedance and to apply this quasi-optimal choice to the Cartesian reality of such a contact task, in which it cannot be expected that a given joint will be either perfectly normal to or perfectly parallel to the motion constraint. The proposed scheme selects a wave impedance matrix that is appropriate to the conditions encountered by the manipulator. This choice may be implemented as a static wave impedance value or as a time-varying choice updated according to the instantaneous conditions encountered. A Lyapunov-like analysis is presented demonstrating that time variation in wave impedance will not violate the passivity of the system. Experimental trials, both in simulation and on a haptic feedback device, are presented validating the technique. Consideration is also given to the case of an uncertain environment, in which an a priori impedance choice may not be possible.

FAULT LINE examines the fragile humanity connected to the themes of sexuality, violence, addiction, family dynamics, and death. The book is not broken into sections; rather, as poems build upon one another to explore a narrative arc, FAULT LINE tracks a single speakerâs experience from girlhood to the verge of independent womanhood. The speaker employs formal structures such as the prose poem, sestina, and particularly the list poem to examine the fluidity of inner experience and also the culture at large while challenging the narrow definitions of femininity and masculinity. FAULT LINE works to not only address the question of blame but also the literal breaks in lines of poetry. By looking at a single speakerâs struggle, the book, like life, is both humorous and horrifying.

In this project an optimal pose selection method for the calibration of an overconstrained Cable-Driven Parallel robot is presented. This manipulator belongs to a subcategory of parallel robots, where the classic rigid "legs" are replaced by cables. Cables are flexible elements that bring advantages and disadvantages to the robot modeling. For this reason, there are many open research issues, and the calibration of geometric parameters is one of them. The identification of the geometry of a robot, in particular, is usually called Kinematic Calibration. Many methods have been proposed in the past years for the solution of the latter problem. Although these methods are based on calibration using different kinematic models, when the robotâs geometry becomes more complex, their robustness and reliability decrease. This fact makes the selection of the calibration poses more complicated. The position and the orientation of the endeffector in the workspace become important in terms of selection. Thus, in general, it is necessary to evaluate the robustness of the chosen calibration method, by means, for example, of a parameter such as the observability index. In fact, it is known from the theory, that the maximization of the above mentioned index identifies the best choice of calibration poses, and consequently, using this pose set may improve the calibration process. The objective of this thesis is to analyze optimization algorithms which aim to calculate an optimal choice of poses both in quantitative and qualitative terms. Quantitatively, because it is of fundamental importance to understand how many poses are needed. Not necessarily a greater number of poses leads to a better result. Qualitatively, because it is useful to understand if the selected combination of poses actually gives additional information in the process of the identification of the parameters.

BACKGROUND Neuroendocrine neoplasia (NEN) are divided in well differentiated G1,G2 and G3 neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) and G3 neuroendocrine carcinomas (NECs). For the latter no standard therapy in second-line is available and prognosis is poor. METHODS Primary aim was to evaluate new prognostic and predictive biomarkers (WP1-3). In WP4 we explored the activity of FOLFIRI and CAPTEM as second-line in NEC patients in a multicenter non-comparative phase II trial RESULTS In WP1-2 we found that 4 of 6 GEP-NEC patients with a negative 68Ga-PET/CT had a loss of expression of RB1. In WP3 on 47 GEP-NENs patients the presence of DLL3 in 76.9% of G3 NEC correlate with RB1-loss (p<0.001), negative 68Ga-PET/CT(p=0.001) and a poor prognosis. In the WP4 we conducted a multicenter non-comparative phase II trial to explore the activity of FOLFIRI or CAPTEM in terms of DCR, PFS and OS given as second-line in NEC patients. From 06/03/2017 to 18/01/2021 53 out of 112 patients were enrolled in 17 of 23 participating centers. Median follow-up was 10.8 (range 1.4 â 38.6) months. The 3-month DCR was 39.3% in the FOLFIRI and 32.0 % in the CAPTEM arm. The 6-months PFS rate was 34.6% ( 95%CI 17.5-52.5) in FOLFIRI and 9.6% (95%CI 1.8-25.7) in CAPTEM group. In the FOLFIRI subgroup the 6-months and 12-months OS rate were 55.4% (95%CI 32.6-73.3) and 30.3% (CI 11.1-52.2) respectively. In CAPTEM arm the 6-months and 12-months OS rate were 57.2% (95%34.9-74.3) and 29.0% (95%10.0-43.3). The miRNA analysis of 20 patients compared with 20 healthy subjects shows an overexpression of miRNAs involved in staminality , neo-angiogenesis and mitochontrial anaerobic glycolysis activation. CONCLUSION WP1-3 support the hypothesis that G3NECs carrying RB1 loss is associated with a DLL3 expression highlighting a potential therapeutic opportunity. Our study unfortunately didnât met the primary endâpoint but the results are promising

In this review recent methods developed and applied to solve criminal occurences related to documentoscopy, ballistic and drugs of abuse are discussed. In documentoscopy, aging of ink writings, the sequence of line crossings and counterfeiting of documents are aspects to be solved with reproducible, fast and non-destructive methods. In ballistic, the industries are currently producing ''lead-free'' or ''nontoxic'' handgun ammunitions, so new methods of gunshot residues characterization are being presented. For drugs analysis, easy ambient sonic-spray ionization mass spectrometry (EASI-MS) is shown to provide a relatively simple and selective screening tool to distinguish m-CPP and amphetamines (MDMA) tablets, cocaine and LSD.
