Numa escola que se encontra em transformação no sentido de se adaptar aos contextos sociais, culturais e políticos que a rodeiam, cabe aos professores serem agentes ativos na definição do caminho a percorrer, visando o aumento da qualidade educativa a proporcionar aos nossos jovens. O questionamento inerente à reflexão sobre o percurso profissional levou à identificação da situação problema e à formulação daquela que é a questão de partida deste trabalho: Como é que a Supervisão Pedagógica (e o trabalho colaborativo a ela associado) poderá contribuir para a melhoria da reflexão conjunta entre os professores do Grupo Disciplinar de Física e Química, promovendo o seu desenvolvimento Profissional? Para dar resposta a esta questão, elaborámos o enquadramento teórico, orientado pelas palavras-chave e com recurso a autores de referência, no qual pretendemos salientar as principais investigações que conferem suporte às temáticas subjacentes a este trabalho: a reflexão interpares na promoção do desenvolvimento profissional dos professores, a Supervisão pedagógica e a importância da formação docente e do trabalho colaborativo na qualidade educativa. Como o objetivo geral do trabalho de projeto é conceber um Projeto de Intervenção de Supervisão Pedagógica no Grupo Disciplinar de Física e Química, visando a melhoria do trabalho colaborativo, a promoção das atitudes reflexivas e investigativas dos docentes e o seu desenvolvimento profissional, a terceira parte foi estruturada com base nos princípios subjacentes à metodologia de projeto. Recolhemos opiniões através de Inquéritos por Questionário, realizados a todos os professores do grupo, e através de Entrevistas, realizadas apenas às professoras Coordenadora e Subcoordenadora do Departamento de Matemática e das Ciências Experimentais, da Escola Secundária Rosa. O Projeto de Intervenção de Supervisão Pedagógica deverá ser implementado e desenvolvido no Grupo Disciplinar de Física e Química da escola referida e com ele pretendemos aprofundar as práticas supervisivas e colaborativas entre os docentes, através da realização de Ciclos completos de Supervisão Pedagógica, de acordo com as fases preconizadas por Goldhammer.

Recolhemos opiniões através de Inquéritos por Questionário, aplicados a todos os professores dos grupos disciplinares de Matemática e de Ciências Físico-Químicas. A análise dos questionários permitiu constatar que o que é prescrito na literatura especializada não parece ser posto em prática, verificando-se incongruências entre o que deve ser feito e o que é levado a cabo na prática, o que nos leva a salientar a necessidade de formação em supervisão e mais concretamente em trabalho colaborativo. É pois tendo por base o que aqui é referido que se propõe, como plano de intervenção, a realização de uma oficina de formação que, em primeiro lugar, seria destinada aos docentes de Matemática e de Ciências Físico Químicas, devendo posteriormente ser alargada a outros grupos disciplinares e a todos os departamentos.

Agricultural management of grassland in lowland Britain has changed fundamentally in the last 50 years, resulting in spatial and structural uniformity within the pastoral landscape. The full extent to which these changes may have reduced the suitability of grassland as foraging habitat for birds is unknown. This study investigated the mechanisms by which these changes have impacted on birds and their food supplies. We quantified field use by birds in summer and winter in two grassland areas of lowland England (Devon and Buckinghamshire) over 3 years, relating bird occurrence to the management, sward structure and seed and invertebrate food resources of individual fields. Management intensity was defined in terms of annual nitrogen input. There was no consistent effect of management intensity on total seed head production, although those of grasses generally increased with inputs while forbs were rare throughout. Relationships between management intensity and abundance of soil and epigeal invertebrates were complex. Soil beetle larvae were consistently lower in abundance, and surface-active beetle larvae counts consistently higher, in intensively managed fields. Foliar invertebrates showed more consistent negatively relationships with management intensity. Most bird species occurred at low densities. There were consistent relationships across regions and years between the occurrence of birds and measures of field management. In winter, there was a tendency towards higher occupancy of intensively managed fields by species feeding on soil invertebrates. In summer, there were few such relationships, although many species avoided fields with tall swards. Use of fields by birds was generally not related to measures of seed or invertebrate food abundance. While granivorous species were perhaps too rare to detect a relationship, in insectivores the strong negative relationships (in summer) with sward height suggested that access to food may be the critical factor. While it appears that intensification of grassland management has been deleterious to the summer food resources of insectivorous birds that use insects living within the grass sward, intensification may have been beneficial to several species in winter through the enhancement of soil invertebrates. Synthesis and applications. We suggest that attempts to restore habitat quality for birds in grassland landscapes need to create a range of management intensities and sward structures at the field and farm scales. A greater understanding of methods to enhance prey accessibility, as well as abundance, for insectivorous birds is required.

The oxidation of organic films on cloud condensation nuclei has the potential to affect climate and precipitation events. In this work we present a study of the oxidation of a monolayer of deuterated oleic acid (cis-9-octadecenoic acid) at the air-water interface by ozone to determine if oxidation removes the organic film or replaces it with a product film. A range of different aqueous sub-phases were studied. The surface excess of deuterated material was followed by neutron reflection whilst the surface pressure was followed using a Wilhelmy plate. The neutron reflection data reveal that approximately half the organic material remains at the air-water interface following the oxidation of oleic acid by ozone, thus cleavage of the double bond by ozone creates one surface active species and one species that partitions to the bulk (or gas) phase. The most probable products, produced with a yield of similar to(87 +/- 14)%, are nonanoic acid, which remains at the interface, and azelaic acid (nonanedioic acid), which dissolves into the bulk solution. We also report a surface bimolecular rate constant for the reaction between ozone and oleic acid of (7.3 +/- 0.9) x 10(-11) cm(2) molecule s(-1). The rate constant and product yield are not affected by the solution sub-phase. An uptake coefficient of ozone on the oleic acid monolayer of similar to 4 x 10(-6) is estimated from our results. A simple Kohler analysis demonstrates that the oxidation of oleic acid by ozone on an atmospheric aerosol will lower the critical supersaturation needed for cloud droplet formation. We calculate an atmospheric chemical lifetime of oleic acid of 1.3 hours, significantly longer than laboratory studies on pure oleic acid particles suggest, but more consistent with field studies reporting oleic acid present in aged atmospheric aerosol.

Sunflower oil-in-water emulsions containing TBHQ, caffeic acid, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), or 6-hydroxy-2,5,7,8-tetramethylchroman-2-carboxylic acid (Trolox), both with and without BSA, were stored at 50 and 30degreesC. Oxidation of the oil was monitored by determination of the PV, conjugated diene content, and hexanal formation. Emulsions containing EGCG, caffeic acid, and, to a lesser extent, Trolox were much more stable during storage in the presence of BSA than in its absence even though BSA itself did not provide an antioxidant effect. BSA did not have a synergistic effect on the antioxidant activity of TBHQ. The BSA structure changed, with a considerable loss of fluorescent tryptophan groups during storage of solutions containing BSA and antioxidants, and a BSA-antioxidant adduct with radical-scavenging activity was formed. The highest radical-scavenging activity observed was for the isolated protein from a sample containing EGCG and BSA incubated at 30degreesC for 10 d. This fraction contained unchanged BSA as well as BSA-antioxidant adduct, but 95.7% of the initial fluorescence had been lost, showing that most of the BSA had been altered. It can be concluded that BSA exerts its synergistic effect with antioxidants because of formation of a protein-antioxidant adduct during storage, which is concentrated at the oil-water interface owing to the surface-active nature of the protein.

Liponucleosides may assist the anchoring of nucleic acid nitrogen bases into biological membranes for tailored nanobiotechnological applications. To this end precise knowledge about the biophysical and chemical details at the membrane surface is required. In this paper, we used Langmuir monolayers as simplified cell membrane models and studied the insertion of five lipidated nucleosides. These molecules varied in the type of the covalently attached lipid group, the nucleobase, and the number of hydrophobic moieties attached to the nucleoside. All five lipidated nucleosides were found to be surface-active and capable of forming stable monolayers. They could also be incorporated into dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) monolayers, four of which induced expansion in the surface pressure isotherm and a decrease in the surface compression modulus of DPPC. In contrast, one nucleoside possessing three alkyl chain modifications formed very condensed monolayers and induced film condensation and an increase in the compression modulus for the DPPC monolayer, thus reflecting the importance of the ability of the nucleoside molecules to be arranged in a closely packed manner. The implications of these results lie on the possibility of tuning nucleic acid pairing by modifying structural characteristics of the liponucleosides. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This work presents results of studies of carbon-dispersed Pt-Rh (1:1) nanoparticles as electrocatalysts for the ethanol electro-oxidation. The influences of the crystallite size and the cell temperature on the yields of CO2, acetaldehyde and acetic acid are investigated. Metal nanoparticles were prepared by two different routes: (1) impregnation on carbon powder followed by thermal reduction on hydrogen atmosphere and (2) chemical reduction of the precursor salts. The surface active area and the electrochemical activity of the electrocatalysts were estimated by CO stripping and cyclic voltammetry in the absence and in the presence of ethanol, respectively. Reaction intermediates and products were analyzed by in situ Fourier Transform Infra-Red Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Differential Electrochemical Mass Spectrometry (DEMS). The electrochemical stripping of CO and the electrochemical ethanol oxidation were slightly faster on the Pt-Rh electrocatalysts compared to Pt/C. Also, in situ FTIR spectra and DEMS measurements evidenced that the CO2/acetaldehyde and the CO2/acetic acid ratios are higher for the Pt-Rh/C materials in relation to Pt/C. This was ascribed to the activation of the C-C bond breaking by Rh, this being more prominent for the materials with smaller crystallite sizes. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Kraft pulp is currently bleached largely by the elemental chlorine free (ECF) technology with oxygen, chlorine dioxide, and hydrogen as active agents. This technology brought about significant environmental improvements in relation to standard processes based on chlorine gas and hypochlorite, but there is still need for further improvements. This study presents a novel environmentally friendly bleaching stage - the so-called `hydrogen peroxide in supercritical carbon dioxide`, P((SC-CO2)) - that can be adapted to current ECF bleaching processes, with preference in cases where hydrogen peroxide is already used. In this study, the P((SC-CO2)) stage was evaluated as a replacement to the last peroxide stage of the D(EP)DP bleaching sequence and to the first peroxide stage of the D(EP)DP sequence, for an oxygen delignified eucalypt kraft-O(2) pulp. The P((SC-CO2)) stage was run with 0.5% hydrogen peroxide, at 15% consistency, 70 degrees C, and 73 bar. The reaction time was 30 min. The performances of regular P stages and the new P((SC-CO2)) stage were compared. Promising results were observed with the DEP((SC-CO2))DP sequence; the P((SC-CO2)) decreased kappa number from 2.7 to 2.1, and the hexenuronic acid groups from 17.0 to 12.4 mmol kg(-1). The P((SC-CO2)) stage showed poor performance when applied in the D(EP)DP((SC-CO2)) sequence. It is concluded that the process presents potential but requires further optimization to improve selectivity and efficiency.

As escolas de samba são organizações peculiares do Brasil e têm sido foco de análise da sociologia e da antropologia há décadas. Nos Estudos Organizacionais muito pouco foi explorado a respeito dessa forma de organização e suas práticas organizativas para a produção de um desfile carnavalesco. Estudar esse universo pode contribuir para compreendermos como uma organização popular desempenha práticas de organizar capazes de produzir o macro-ator escola de samba, responsável pelos desfiles que fizeram o carnaval brasileiro ser conhecido mundialmente. É nesse sentido que o objetivo desta tese é investigar e analisar as práticas organizativas da produção do desfile de uma escola de samba do grupo especial da cidade de São Paulo. Para tanto, tomei como referência o trabalho do setor de harmonia da agremiação, cujas atividades são centrais no processo de produção do desfile. A tese está alinhada com o movimento na área de Estudos Organizacionais em direção ao estudo das práticas, o qual parte da idéia de que os fenômenos que se desdobram na realidade são conseqüência de práticas locais e acontecem por meio delas e de arranjos materiais nos quais humanos e não-humanos estão engajados na sua constituição. Tendo em vista essas noções, utilizei a Teoria Ator-Rede, uma abordagem que fornece um repertório analítico capaz de ajudar a entender o processo da ordenação social como efeito de uma rede heterogênea de elementos, na qual diversos e contraditórios interesses são negociados e uma estabilidade temporária alcançada. O trabalho de campo, desenvolvido com base em alguns princípios etnográficos, foi realizado junto ao setor de harmonia da escola de samba Vai-Vai. Durante a pesquisa eu fiz observações, entrevistas e reuni uma série de documentos referentes ao processo de produção do desfile. Tomando como ponto de partida minha relação com os sujeitos da pesquisa, analisei as transformações na minha identidade ao longo da pesquisa e as implicações disso para o trabalho. Ao seguir os atores e suas práticas organizativas pude identificar os principais espaços e arranjos materiais nos quais essas práticas se desdobram e o conjunto de controvérsias que se estabelece em torno dos diversos interesses envolvidos. Em cada um dos espaços (re)tracei os elementos da rede-de-atores e mostrei como as práticas organizativas coexistem com processos de desorganização. Essa se apresentou uma característica marcante das práticas de produção do desfile. Discuto na tese que as práticas organizativas ocorrem por meio de processos de translação entre os harmonias e vários outros atores humanos e não-humanos. Mostro ainda como as fronteiras de uma escola de samba são fluidas e as dicotomias comumente usadas para analisá-las ocultam uma forma de organização heterogênea. Concluo que as práticas organizativas são compostas por uma série de atores (humanos e não-humanos) que transladam seus interesses e contínuos esforços são realizados para estabilizar a rede-de-atores em constante estado de (re)constituição. Na conclusão destaco também que os elementos não-humanos são agentes ativos nas práticas organizativas e da pesquisa de campo e deveríamos atentar um pouco mais para sua presença.

O presente trabalho analisa cinco inventários dos maiores produtores de café no município de Piraí, no Vale do Paraíba, entre os anos de 1839 e 1848, totalizando quase dois mil escravos. A partir de uma perspectiva de historia econômica pretende-se mostrar que a produção cafeeira permitia o acúmulo de capital e seu reinvestimento na expansão da monocultura. O estudo dos cativeiros também busca evidenciar que os cativos, africanos em sua maioria, eram agentes na formação de suas famílias, mantendo um espaço de sociabilidade baseado na memória e na construção de uma nova identidade afro-brasileira.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa LBI produced surface active rhamnolipids when cultivated on waste from the sunflower-oil process under different conditions. These biosurfactants, which reduce the superficial and interfacial tensions between fluids, offer advantages over their chemical counterparts, especially because of their ecological acceptability. These molecules can be used in fields as diverse as chemical, pharmaceutical and petrochemical industries. In this work, we present the effect of C/N ratio on growth and production yield. The best production yields (Y-P/S) were achieved for C/N ratios (in g/g) of 8/1 (0.22) and 6.4/1 (0.23). The product concentration was very satisfactory (7.3 g/L) at C/N ratio of 8/1, especially when considering that the substrate was basically composed of wastes that would otherwise constitute an environmental disposal problem. The interaction of diclofenae sodium (SD) with soya phosphatidylcholine (SPC) has been studied with floating Langmuir monolayers and liposomes. SD was either introduced into the subphase of SPC monolayers or co-spread with SPC on an aqueous subphase. In both cases, SD caused the surface pressure isotherm to become more expanded, thus demonstrating the affinity between SD and SPC. The incorporation of SD caused SPC liposomes to have a decreased diameter according to light scattering experiments. When SPC liposomes were injected into an aqueous subphase, their destruction yielding surface-active monomers could be monitored by changes in surface pressure. SD-loaded liposomes displayed a much faster kinetics when the surface density of surface-active monomers was plotted against time, with rate constants increasing significantly with the SD concentration. Many plants are used in traditional medicine as active agents against various effects induced by snakebite. The methanolic extract from Cordia verbenacea (Cv) significantly inhibited paw edema induced by Bothrops jararacussu snake venom and by its main basic phospholipase A(2) homologs, namely bothropstoxins I and II (BthTXs). The active component was isolated by chromatography on Sephadex LH-20 and by RP-HPLC on a C18 column and identified as rosmarinic acid (Cv-RA). Rosmarinic acid is an ester of caffeic acid and 3,4-dihydroxyphenyllactic acid [2-O-cafeoil-3-(3,4-di-hydroxy-phenyl)-R-lactic acid]. This is the first report of RA in the species C. verbenacea ('baleeira', 'whaler') and of its anti-inflammatory and antimyotoxic properties against snake venoms and isolated toxins. RA inhibited the edema and myotoxic activity induced by the basic PLA(2)s BthTX-I and BthTX-II. It was, however, less efficient to inhibit the PLA(2) activity of BthTX-II and, still less, the PLA(2) and edema-inducing activities of the acidic isoform BthA-1-PLA(2), from the same venom, showing therefore a higher inhibitory activity upon basic PLA(2)s. RA also inhibited most of the myotoxic and partially the edema-inducing effects of both basic PLA(2)s, thus reinforcing the idea of dissociation between the catalytic and pharmacological domains. The pure compound potentiated the ability of the commercial equine polyvalent antivenom in neutralizing lethal and myotoxic effects of the crude venom and of isolated PLA(2)s in experimental models. CD data presented here suggest that, after binding, no significant conformation changes occur either in the Cv-RA or in the target PLA(2). A possible model for the interaction of rosmarinic acid with Lys49-PLA(2) BthTX-I is proposed. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The increasing environmental concern about chemical surfactants triggers attention to microbial-derived surface-active compounds essentially due to their low toxicity and biodegradable nature. At present, biosurfactants are predominantly used in remediation of pollutants; however, they show potential applications in many sectors of food industry. Associated with emulsion forming and stabilization, antiadhesive and antimicrobial activities are some properties of biosurfactants, which could be explored in food processing and formulation. Potential applications of microbial surfactants in food area and the use of agroindustrial wastes as alternative substrates for their production are discussed.

Pseudomonas strains are able to biosynthesize rhamnose-containing surfactants also known as rhamnolipids. These surface-active compounds are reviewed with respect to chemical structure, properties, biosynthesis, and physiological role, focusing on their production and the use of low-cost substrates such as wastes from food industries as alternative carbon sources. The use of inexpensive raw materials such as agroindustrial wastes is an attractive strategy to reduce the production costs associated with biosurfactant production and, at same time, contribute to the reduction of environmental impact generated by the discard of residues, and the treatment costs. Carbohydrate-rich substrates generated low rhamnolipid levels, whereas oils and lipid-rich wastes have shown excellent potential as alternative carbon sources.
