The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the influence of pit and fissure sealants on fluorescence readings using lasers. We selected 166 permanent molars and randomly divided them into 4 groups which were each treated with a different sealant (a commercially available clear sealant, 2 opaque sealants and an experimental nanofilled clear sealant). The teeth were independently measured twice by 2 experienced dentists using conventional laser fluorescence (LF) and a laser fluorescence pen device (LFpen), before and after sealing, and again after thermocycling to simulate the thermal stressing between the tooth and the dental materials. Friedman test showed no statistically significant changes using LF and LFpen for the commercial clear sealant group, although values tended to increase after sealing. However, the values increased significantly after thermocycling. There was a statistically significant decrease in fluorescence after application of opaque sealants. After application of the experimental nanofilled clear sealant, LF values increased only after thermocycling, whereas the LFpen values increased after sealing and after thermocycling as well. The intraclass correlation coefficient ranged from 0.87 to 0.96 for interexaminer and 0.82 to 0.94 for intraexaminer reproducibility. It was shown that pit and fissure sealants influence LF and LFpen readings, with the values increasing or decreasing according to the material used. In conclusion, both laser fluorescence devices could be useful as an adjunct to detect occlusal caries under unfilled clear sealants. Nevertheless, surfaces sealed with clear nanofilled material could be assessed using only the LF device.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this article is to assess the healing qualities of presealed knitted polyester prostheses. METHODS: Thoracic aortic replacement was performed with grafts with four different coating materials-collagen (CP), albumin (AP), and two with gelatin (GP1/GP2)-in four groups of 15 pigs each. Two weeks, 6 weeks, and 6 months after operation, five pigs of each group were killed. Healing quality was assessed by morphometric analysis of the remaining coating, the extent of tissue ingrowth, and the thickness of the inner layer. RESULTS: The sealant was rapidly absorbed in all prostheses except for the AP (remaining coating at 2 weeks: GP1 22.1%, GP2 34.7%, and CP 68.0% vs AP 97.1% [p < 0.05]), remaining coating at 6 weeks: GP1/GP2 0% and CP 2.5% vs AP 76.7% (p < .01). At 6 months, remaining coating was only detectable in AP (21.5%). At 2 weeks the extent of tissue ingrowth ranged from 65.7% in GP1 and 75.3% in CP to 80% in GP2 versus 8.9% in AP (p < 0.05). There was a slow increase of tissue ingrowth until the sixth postoperative week (GP1 74.4%, GP2 85.0%, and CP 91.3% versus AP 19.6% [p < 0.01]). Thickness of the internal layer varied from 0.11 to 0.21 mm at 2 weeks in all grafts studied and from 1.02 mm (AP) and 1.28 mm (GP2) to 1.39 mm (GP1), versus 0.41 mm in the CP (p < 0.01) after 6 months of implantation. CONCLUSIONS: The type of coating significantly influences the healing properties of knitted polyester prostheses. When used for thoracic aortic replacement in pigs, AP coating clearly results in inferior healing compared with GP1/GP2 or CP impregnation, with digestion of the coating material and tissue ingrowth used as parameters. The thinnest internal layer was found in the CP prostheses, reflecting superior healing properties of this coating in the model studied.

OBJECTIVE To search the literature and assess the short- and long-term release of bisphenol-A (BPA) in human tissues after treatment with dental sealants. DATA Two review authors performed data extraction independently and in duplicate using data collection forms. Disagreements were resolved by discussion with an arbiter. SOURCES Electronic database searches of published and unpublished literature were performed. The following electronic databases with no language and publication date restrictions were searched: MEDLINE (via Ovid and Pubmed), EMBASE (via ovid), Cochrane Trials Register and CENTRAL. The reference lists of all eligible studies were hand-searched. STUDY SELECTION In the absence of RCTs, six interventional and two observational studies, examining in vivo BPA release in human salivary, blood and urinary samples, were included. Due to the heterogeneity in methodology and reporting, the main synthesis of the results was qualitative. The quantitative synthesis based on the weighted Z-test could only include two studies. BPA levels identified in saliva ranged from traces below the method's detection limit to 30 μg/ml. In urine, BPA quantities spanned from 0.17 mg/g to 45.4 mg/g. BPA was not traced in any blood sample at any point of time in the relevant studies. The quantitative analysis showed evidence of BPA release one hour after sealant placement compared to the amount traced before restoration (Stouffer's z trend: <0.001). CONCLUSIONS The available evidence on this topic derived from studies that represent a moderate level of evidence. Nevertheless, the available evidence supports that BPA is released in saliva after sealant placement. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE From the qualititative and quantitative synthesis of studies, it is reasonable to conclude that BPA is released after placement of some dental pit and fissure sealants in the oral cavity. The biggest quantities are detected in saliva immediately after or one hour after their placement.

Reimbursement for dental services performed for children receiving Medicaid is reimbursed per service while dental treatment for military dependents provided at a military installation is neither directly reimbursable to those providing the care nor billed to those receiving the care. The purpose of this study was to compare pediatric dental services provided for a Medicaid population to a federally subsidized military facility to compare treatment choices and subsequent costs of care. It was hypothesized that differences in dental procedures for Medicaid and military dependent children would exist based upon treatment philosophy and payment method. A total of 240 records were reviewed for this study, consisting of 120 Medicaid patients at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) and 120 military dependents at Wilford Hall Medical Center (WHMC), Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio. Demographic data and treatment information were abstracted for children receiving dental treatment under general anesthesia between 2002 and 2006. Data was analyzed using the Wilcoxon rank sum test, Kruskal-Wallis test, and Fisher's exact test. The Medicaid recipients treated at UTHSCSA were younger than patients at WHMC (40.2 vs. 49.8 months, p<.001). The university also treated significantly more Hispanic children than WHMC (78.3% vs. 30.0%, p<.001). Children at UTHSCSA had a mean of 9.5 decayed teeth and were treated with 2.3 composite fillings, 0 amalgam fillings, 5.6 stainless steel crowns, 1.1 pulp therapies, 1.6 extractions, and 1.0 sealant. Children at WHMC had a mean of 8.7 decayed teeth and were treated with 1.4 composite fillings, 0.9 amalgam fillings, 5.6 stainless steel crowns, 1.7 pulp therapies, 0.9 extractions, and 2.1 sealants. The means of decayed teeth, total fillings, and stainless steel crowns were not statistically different. UTHSCSA provided more composite fillings (p<.001), fewer amalgam fillings (p<.001), fewer pulp therapies (p <.001), more extractions (p=.01), and fewer sealants (p<.001) when compared to WHMC. Age and gender did not effect decay rates, but those of Hispanic ethnicity did experience more decay than non-Hispanics (9.5 vs. 8.6, p=.02). Based upon Texas Medicaid reimbursement rates from 2006, the cost for dental treatment at both sites was approximately $650 per child. The results of this study do not support the hypothesis that Medicaid providers provide less conservative therapies, which would be more costly, care when compared to a military treatment center. ^

INTRODUCTION: Around 80% of people are affected by low back pain at least once in their life, often caused by trauma provoking intervertebral disc (IVD) herniation and/or IVD degeneration. Apart from some promising approaches for nucleus pulposus repair, so far no treatment or repair is available for the outer fibrous tissue, annulus fibrosus (AF). We aimed for sealing and repairing an AF injury in a bovine IVD organ culture model in vitro over 14 days under different loading conditions. For this purpose, a silk fleece composite from Bombyx mori silk was combined with genipin-enhanced fibrin hydrogel [1]. METHODS: Bovine IVDs of 12-17 months old animals were isolated by first removing all surrounding tissue, followed by cutting out the IVDs [2]. Culturing of discs occurred in high glucose Dulbecco's Modified Eagle Medium (HG-DMEM) supplemented with 5% serum as previously described. On the next day, injury was induced using a 2mm biopsy punch (Polymed, Switzerland). The formed cavity was filled with (0.4%) genipin-enhanced human based fibrin hydrogel (35- 55mg/mL human fibrinogen, Baxter, Austria) and sealed with a silk fleece-membrane composite (Spintec Engineering, Germany). Different culture conditions were applied: free swelling, static diurnal load of 0.2MPa for 8h/d and complex loading at 0.2MPa compression combined with ± 2° torsion at 0.2Hz for 8h/d. Complex loading was applied by a custom built 2 degree of freedom bioreactor [3]. After 14 days of culture cell activity was determined with resazurin assay. Additionally, glycosaminoglycan (dimethyl-methylene blue), DNA (Hoechst) and collagen content (hydroxy-proline) were determined. Finally, real-time qPCR of major IVD marker genes was performed. RESULTS: The silk seal closing the injury site could successfully withstand the forces of all three loading conditions with no misplacement over the two weeks’ culture. Nevertheless, disc height of the repaired discs did not significantly differ from the injured group. The disc phenotype could be maintained as demonstrated by biochemical analysis of gene expression, cell activity, DNA-, collagen- and GAG content. The silk itself was evaluated to be highly biocompatible for hMSC, as revealed by cytotoxicity assays. DISCUSSION & CONCLUSIONS: The silk can be considered a highly-elastic and biocompatible material for AF closure and the genipin-enhanced fibrin hydrogel has also good biomechanical properties. However, the cyto-compatibility of genipin seems rather poor and other hydrogels and/or cross-linkers should be looked into. REFERENCES: 1 C.C.

Cells the solid oxide fuel are systems capable to directly convert energy of a chemical reaction into electric energy in clean, quiet way and if its components in the solid state differentiate of excessively the techniques for having all. Its more common geometric configurations are: the tubular one and to glide. Geometry to glide beyond the usual components (anode, cathode and electrolyte) needs interconnect and sealant. E the search for materials adjusted for these components is currently the biggest challenge found for the production of the cells. The sealants need to present chemical stability in high temperatures, to provoke electric isolation, to have coefficient of compatible thermal expansion with the excessively component ones. For presenting these characteristics the glass-ceramics materials are recommended for the application. In this work the study of the partial substitution of the ZrO2 for the Al2O3 in system LZS became it aiming at the formation of system LZAS, this with the addition of natural spodumene with 10, 20 and 30% in mass. The compositions had been casting to a temperature of 1500°C and later quickly cooled with the objective to continue amorphous. Each composition was worn out for attainment of a dust with average diameter of approximately 3μm and characterized by the techniques of DRX, FRX, MEV, dilatometric analysis and particle size analysis. Later the samples had been conformed and treated thermally with temperatures in the interval between 700-1000 °C, with platform of 10 minutes and 1 hour. The analyses for the treated samples had been: dilatometric analysis, DRX, FRX, electrical conductivity and tack. The results point with respect to the viability of the use of system LZAS for use as sealant a time that had presented good results as isolating electric, they had adhered to a material with similar α of the components of a SOFC and had presented steady crystalline phases
