A kind of carbon nanotube bundle has been synthesized by a simple one-step solvothermal reaction between Na and hexachlorobenzene (HCB) using NiCl2 as catalyst precursor. Before the reaction, NiCl2 was initially dispersed ultrasonically in cyclohexane then prereduced by Na at 230degreesC to produce small Ni particles in reduced state. The tubes thus-produced have a uniform outer diameter of about 20 nm, an inner diameter of 4 nm, and are highly ordered assembled as bundles which have a 2D hexagonal arrangement as proven by SAXS and TEM experiments.

Linkam CSS450 optical shearing stage, wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and small-angle X-ray scattering(SAXS) were used to investigate the effect of shear on crystal structure and crystallization morphology of the glass bead filled polypropylene( PP). The results indicate that the glass bead worked as nucleating agent for the glass bead filled PP, compared with pure PP it restrained the formation of beta-crystal after shear treatment. When the mean size of glass bead is smaller(4 mu m) shear rate had less effect on the formation of beta-crystal of PP obviously.

The final structure of molten syndiotactic polypropylene (sPP) sheared under different conditions was investigated by synchrotron small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) and wide-angle x-ray diffraction (WAXD) techniques to elucidate the shear effects on sPP crystalline structure. The results obtained from the WAXD show that there is no variation on crystalline form but a little difference on the orientation of the 200 reflection. The SAXS data indicate that the lamellar thickness and long period have not been affected by shear but the lamellar orientation is dependent on shear. The experimental data of sPP crystallization from sheared melt may indicate a mesophase structure that is crucial to the shear effects on the final polymer multiscale crystalline structures.

The structural evolution of an ice-quenched high-density polyethylene (HDPE) subjected to uniaxial tensile deformation at elevated temperatures was examined as a function of the imposed strains by means of combined synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) techniques. The data show that when stretching an isotropic sample with the spherulitic structure, intralamellar slipping of crystalline blocks was activated at small deformations, followed by a stress-induced fragmentation and recrystallization process yielding lamellar crystallites with their normal parallel to the stretching direction. Stretching of an isothermally crystallized HDPE sample at 120 degrees C exhibited changes of the SAXS diagram with strain similar to that observed for quenched HDPE elongated at room temperature, implying that the thermal stability of the crystal blocks composing the lamellae is only dependent on the crystallization temperature.

The microstructure and mechanical properties of beta-nucleated iPP before and after being annealed at different temperatures (90-160 degrees C) have been analyzed, Annealing induced different degrees of variation in fracture toughness of beta-nucleated iPP samples. namely, slight enhancement at relatively low annealing temperatures (< 110 degrees C) and great improvement at moderate temperatures (120-130 degrees C), whereas dramatic deterioration at relatively high temperatures ( > 140 degrees C) has been observed. The variation of fracture toughness of beta-nucleated iPP is observed to be dependent on the content of beta-NA. Experiments, including scanning electronic microscope (SEM), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), are performed to study the variations of microstructures as well as the toughening mechanism of the beta-nucleated iPP after being annealed.

For the films and powder of polymers containing conductive oligomer are usually obtained from solution, the choice of better solvents for the regular arrangement of oligomers is very important for the higher conductivity. Because of the poor solubility of the oligomers, it is difficult to study the arrangement directly in most common solvents, so, we synthesized a triblock copolymer, mPEG2k-aniline pentamer-mPEG2k, as the model to investigate the arrangement-solvent relationship. For the poor solubility of the AP block in common solvents, the copolymer self-assembled into spheric micelles in toluene and into lamellar crystals in water and THF. The crystallinity (X-c) and crystallization temperature (T-c) values of mPEG blocks in powders prepared from different solvents differed obviously, which may be the effect of different self-assembled structures. From the two-phase model of one-dimensional electron density correlation function of SAXS, the long period of copolymer prepared from THF was presumably equal to the long period of pure mPEG plus the chain length of AP, which demonstrates that the AP blocks arrange regularly in the noncrystalline regions.

The crystallization behaviors of poly( E-caprolactone) (PCL) in poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) and poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME) blends were investigated by POM, DSC, WAXD, SAXS. POM results indicated that spherical crystal morphology was present during isothermal process, and the spheric growth rates were reduced with increasing the contents of PVME in PCL/PVME blends. It was found that the crystallinity of PCL in the blends remained almost constant regardless of the blend composition, but it was dependent on preparation technique. Solution-crystallization was found to be a technique capable of increasing crystallinity levels for some compositions. The melting behavior of the blends is a rather complex process. Both solution-crystallized samples and isothermal-crystallized samples exhibited a single endotherm. Oppositely, melting-crystallized samples exhibited dual-melting endotherms whose mangnitudes vary with blend compositions. On the basis of WAXD and SAXS experiments, it is found that the crystal structure is unchanged, but the long period increases with increasing the content of PVME because of the thickening of the amorphous layers.

The structural evolution of high-density polyethylene subjected to uniaxial tensile deformation was investigated as a function of strain and after annealing at different temperatures using a scanning synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) technique. The results confirm that in the course of tensile deformation intralamellar block slips were activated at small deformations followed by a stress-induced fragmentation and recrystallization process yielding thinner lamellae with their normal parallel to the stretching direction. The original sheared lamellae underwent severe internal deformation so that they were even less stable than the newly developed thinner lamellae. Accordingly, annealing results in a melting of the original crystallites even at moderate strains where the stress-induced fragmentation and recrystallization just sets in and generates a distinctly different form of lamellar stacks aligned along the drawing direction. It was found that the lamellae newly formed during stretching at moderate strains remain stable at lower temperature. Only at a very high annealing temperature of 120 degrees C can they be melted, leading to an isotropic distribution of the lamellar structure.

The aim of this work is to investigate the effect of consecutive shear on the crystallization of an amorphous aromatic polyimide (PI) derived from 3,3',4,4'oxydiphthalic dianhydride (3,3',4,4'-ODPA) and 4,4-oxydianiline (ODA). At 260 degrees C, the increase of shear rate or shear time leads to the increase of crystallinity. Indeed, increasing shear rate can also accelerate the crystallization behavior. Moreover, it was found that a new melting peak appeared at higher temperature for long time or high rate sheared sample. The enhancement of crystallization behavior appears directly linked to the increase of crystal thickness. Particularly, the effect of shear temperature was investigated, and the results revealed that the crystallization of the PI was more sensitive to shear at 260 degrees C, which was 10 degrees above the glass transition temperature (250 degrees C) of the PI. Possible mechanism was proposed to illustrate the effect of consecutive shear on the crystallization of the PI polymer.

Properties of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) were significantly modified by a hydrogen bonding (H-bond) monomer-bisphenol A (BPA). BPA lowered the T-m of PHBV and widened the heat-processing window of PHBV. At the same time, a dynamic H-bond network in the blends was observed indicating that BPA acted as a physical cross-link agent. BPA enhanced the T, of PHBV and reduced the crystallization rate of PHBV. It resulted in larger crystallites in PHBV/BPA blends showed by WAXD. However, the crystallinity of PHBV was hardly reduced. SAXS results suggested that BPA molecules distributed in the inter-lamellar region of PHBV. Finally, a desired tension property was obtained, which had an elongation at break of 370% and a yield stress of 16 MPa. By comparing the tension properties of PHBV/BPA and PHBV/tert-butyl phenol blends, it was concluded that the H-bond network is essential to the improvement of ductility.

The effect of crystallization on the lamellar orientation of poly( styrene)-b-poly(L-lactide) (PS-PLLA) semicrystalline diblock copolymer in thin films has been investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electronic microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In the melt state, microphase separation leads to a symmetric wetting structure with PLLA blocks located at both polymer/substrate and polymer/air interfaces. The lamellar period is equal to the long period L in bulk determined by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Symmetric wetting structure formed in the melt state provides a model structure to study the crystallization of PLLA monolayer tethered on glassy (T-c < T-g,T-PS) or rubber (T-c > T-g,T-PS) PS substrate. In both cases, it is found that the crystallization of PLLA results in a "sandwich" structure with amorphous PS layer located at both folding surfaces. For T-c <= T-g,T- PS, the crystallization induces a transition of the lamellar orientation from parallel to perpendicular to substrate in between and front of the crystals. In addition, the depletion of materials around the crystals leads to the formation of holes of 1/2 L, leaving the adsorbed monolayer exposure at the bottom of the holes.

The crystallization behaviors of the poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(epsilon-caprolactone) diblock copolymer with the PEG weight fraction of 0.50 (PEG(50)-PCL50) was studied by DSC, WAXD, SAXS, and FTIR. A superposed melting point at 58.5 degrees C and a superposed crystallization temperature at 35.4 degrees C were obtained from the DSC profiles running at 10 degrees C/min, whereas the temperature-dependent FTIR measurements during cooling from the melt at 0.2 degrees C/min showed that the PCL crystals formed starting at 48 degrees C while the PEG crystals started at 45 degrees C. The PEG and PCL blocks of the copolymer crystallized separately and formed alternating lamella regions according to the WAXD and SAXS results. The crystal growth of the diblock copolymer was observed by polarized optical microscope (POM). An interesting morphology of the concentric spherulites developed through a unique crystallization behavior. The concentric spherulites were analyzed by in situ microbeam FTIR, and it was determined that the morphologies of the inner and outer portions were mainly determined by the PCL and PEG spherulites, respectively. However, the compositions of the inner and outer portions were equal in the analysis by microbeam FTIR.
