Three nodules from a core taken north of Puerto Rico are composed chiefly of an x-ray amorphous, hydrated, iron-manganese oxide, with secondary goethite, and minor detrital silicates incorporated during growth of the nodules. No primary manganese mineral is apparent. The nodules are enriched in iron and depleted in manganese relative to Atlantic Ocean averages. The formation of these nodules appears to have been contemporary with sedimentation and related to volcanic activity.

New geochronometers are needed for sediments of the Arctic Ocean spanning at least the last half million years, largely because oxygen-isotope stratigraphy is relatively ineffective in this ocean, and because other dating techniques require significant assumptions about sedimentation rates. Multi-aliquot luminescence sediment-dating procedures were applied to polymineral, fine-silt samples from 9 core-top and 37 deeper samples from 20 cores representing 19 sites across the Arctic Ocean. Most samples have independent age assignments and other known properties (e.g., % coarse fraction, % carbonate, U-Th isotopes). Many (bio)geochemical processes that bring about changes in sediment chemistry normally begin at the sediment-water interface, continue at depth within the sediment column and may persist throughout the lifetime of sediments. Because of the differential reactivity of sedimentary phosphate phases in response to diagenesis, dissolution/precipitation and biological cycling, the oxygen isotope ratios of phosphate (d18OP) can carry a distinct signature of these processes, as well as inform on the origin of specific P phases. Here, we present results of sequential sediment extraction (SEDEX) analyses combined with d18OP measurements, aimed at characterizing authigenic and detrital phosphate phases in continental margin sediments from three sites (Sites 1227, 1228 and 1229) along the Peru Margin collected during ODP Leg 201. Our results show that the amount of P in different reservoirs varies significantly in the upper 50 m of the sediment column, but with a consistent pattern, for example, detrital P is highest in siliciclastic-rich layers. The d18OP values of authigenic phosphate vary between 20.2 per mil and 24.8 per mil and can be classified into at least two major groups: authigenic phosphate precipitated at/near the sediment-water interface in equilibrium with paleo-water oxygen isotope ratios (d18Ow) and temperature, and phosphate derived from hydrolysis of organic matter (Porg) with subsequent incomplete to complete re-equlibration and precipitated deeper in the sediments column. The d18OP values of detrital phosphate, which vary from 7.7-15.4 per mil, suggest two possible terrigenous sources and their mixtures in different proportions: phosphate from igneous/metamorphic rocks and phosphate precipitated in source regions in equilibrium with d18Ow of meteoric water. More importantly, original isotopic compositions of at least one phase of authigenic phosphates and all detrital phosphates are not altered by diagenesis and other biogeochemical changes within the sediment column. These findings help to understand the origin and provenance of P phases and paleoenvironmental conditions at/near the sediment-water interface, and to infer post-depositional activities within the sediment column.

Major element composition ranges of closely associated basalt glass-whole rock pairs from individual small cooling units approach the total known range of basalt glass and whole rock compositions at IPOD sites 417 and 418. The whole rock samples fall into two groups: one is depleted in MgO and distinctly enriched in plagioclase but has lost some olivine and/or pyroxene relative to its corresponding glass; and the other is enriched in MgO and in phenocrysts of olivine and pyroxene as well as plagioclase compared to its corresponding glass. By analogy with observed phenocryst distributions in lava pillows, tubes, and dikes, and with some theoretical studies, we infer that bulk rock compositions are strongly affected by phenocryst redistribution due to gravity settling, flotation, and dynamic sorting after eruption, although specific models are not well constrained by the one-dimensional geometry of drill core. Compositional trends or groupings in whole rock data resulting from such late-stage processes should not be confused with more fundamental compositional effects produced in deep chambers or during partial melting.

Stable isotopic records across the Cretaceous/Paleogene (K/P) boundary in Maud Rise Holes 689B and 690C indicate that significant climatic changes occurred during the latest Cretaceous, beginning approximately 500 k.y. prior to the mass extinction event and the enrichment of iridium at the K/P boundary (66.4 Ma). An oxygen isotopic decrease of ~0.7 per mil - ~1.0 per mil is recorded in the Late Cretaceous planktonic and benthic foraminifers between 66.9 and 66.6 Ma. The negative isotope excursion was followed by a positive excursion of similar magnitude between 66.6 Ma (latest Cretaceous) and ~66.3 Ma (earliest Paleocene). No other isotopic excursions of this magnitude are recorded in the planktonic and benthic microfossil records 1.0 m.y prior to, and for 2.0 m.y following the mass extinction event at the K/P boundary. The magnitude and duration of these isotopic excursions were similar to those at the Paleocene/Eocene and Eocene/Oligocene boundaries. A major d13C excursion occurred 200 k.y. prior to the boundary, involving a positive shift in planktonic and benthic d13C of ~0.5 per mil - 0.75 per mil. Similar changes observed in other deep-sea sequences indicate that this reflected a global change in d13C of the oceanic total dissolved carbon (TDC) reservoir. The magnitude of this inferred carbon reservoir change and its association with high latitude surface-water temperature changes recorded in the d18O records implies that it was linked to global climate change through feedback loops in the carbon cycle. At the K/P boundary, the surface-to-deep water d13C gradient is reduced by approximately 0.6 per mil - ~0.2 per mil. However, unlike sequences elsewhere, the planktonic-benthic d13C gradient (Delta d13C) was not eliminated in the Antarctic. The surface-to-deep water gradient was re-established gradually during the 400 k.y. following the mass extinction. Full recovery of the Delta d13C occurred by ~60.0 Ma. In addition to the reduced vertical d13C gradient across the K/P boundary, there was a negative excursion in both planktonic and benthic d13C beginning approximately 100 k.y. after the boundary (66.3 Ma). This excursion resulted in benthic d13C values in the early Paleogene that were similar to those in the pre-K/P boundary intervals. This negative shift appears to reflect a change in the d13C of the oceanic TDC reservoir shift that may have resulted from reduced carbon burial and/or increased carbon flux to the oceans. Any model that attempts to explain the demise of the oceanic plankton at the end of the Cretaceous should consider the oceanic environmental changes that were occurring prior to the massive extinction event.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is an essential component of the carbon cycle and a critical driver in controlling variety of biogeochemical and ecological processes in wetlands. The quality of this DOM as it relates to composition and reactivity is directly related to its sources and may vary on temporal and spatial scales. However, large scale, long-term studies of DOM dynamics in wetlands are still scarce in the literature. Here we present a multi-year DOM characterization study for monthly surface water samples collected at 14 sampling stations along two transects within the greater Everglades, a subtropical, oligotrophic, coastal freshwater wetland-mangrove-estuarine ecosystem. In an attempt to assess quantitative and qualitative variations of DOM on both spatial and temporal scales, we determined dissolved organic carbon (DOC) values and DOM optical properties, respectively. DOM quality was assessed using, excitation emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence coupled with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC). Variations of the PARAFAC components abundance and composition were clearly observed on spatial and seasonal scales. Dry versus wet season DOC concentrations were affected by dry-down and re-wetting processes in the freshwater marshes, while DOM compositional features were controlled by soil and higher plant versus periphyton sources respectively. Peat-soil based freshwater marsh sites could be clearly differentiated from marl-soil based sites based on EEM–PARAFAC data. Freshwater marsh DOM was enriched in higher plant and soil-derived humic-like compounds, compared to estuarine sites which were more controlled by algae- and microbial-derived inputs. DOM from fringe mangrove sites could be differentiated between tidally influenced sites and sites exposed to long inundation periods. As such coastal estuarine sites were significantly controlled by hydrology, while DOM dynamics in Florida Bay were seasonally driven by both primary productivity and hydrology. This study exemplifies the application of long term optical properties monitoring as an effective technique to investigate DOM dynamics in aquatic ecosystems. The work presented here also serves as a pre-restoration condition dataset for DOM in the context of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP).

Given the multiplicity of languages and media present in contemporary texts, the work with digital genres characterizes itself as essential for teaching, reading and writing. Virtual media is already present in many dayly activities that require the use of language. This shows that the globalized world brings new demands of literacy and various reading practices. Given this perspective, we propose to work the multiliteracies present in the new texts from the enunciative discourse Bakhtinian assumptions. For this, we chose to be as the object of research / intervention, the horror flash fiction multimodal discursive genre, because it is a multissemiótico digital statement of virtual circulation. In this context, this study aimed to understand how the teaching of this kind can contribute to the development of knowledge related to reading and text production, required by multiliteracies, by performing a Didactic Sequence in the classroom, specifically for two classes of elementary school, 7th and 8th grades of public school. The research was based on Bakhtin's theory and the Circle (2009, 2011) on gender perspective in a dialogic and the proposed Dolz and Schneuwly (2004) for the text of teaching through sequences Teaching. We also use the precepts of multiliteracies focused on Rojo (2012, 2013). The methodology used was based on a qualitative approach. We consider the analysis of minicontos produced by students, it's own hibridism of multiliteracies, the discursive characteristics such as composition, style and subject content, in addition to relations dialogicity present in these statements. At the end of the study, we realized that our intervention contributed to the expansion of knowledge of the subjects involved related to reading and multimodal genre production.

The surface layer of bottom sediments on the Barents Sea shelf has an irregular but generally very low abundance of diatoms. Tests of species belonging to present-day diatom flora were absent in nearly half of samples; their abundance was only a few shells per gram of dry sediment in 30% of the samples, it was up to 100 shells per gram in 9% of the samples, and was in thousands of shells per gram in only 13% of the samples. The lowest abundances of diatom shells were found in sediments of the eastern and northeastern parts of the sea owing to unfavorable sedimentation conditions and deficiency of dissolved silica in water. But distribution of diatom species on the surface of bottom sediments is strictly consistent with their present-day ranges. About 30% of the samples contained re-deposited Cretaceous and Paleogene diatoms indicating that bottom sediments have largely formed by scouring and re-deposition of underlying material.

Sr, Nd, and Os isotopic data are presented for sediments from diverse locations in the Bay of Bengal. These data allow the samples to be divided into three groups, related to their sedimentary contexts. The first group, mainly composed of sediments from the shelf off Bangladesh and the currently active fan, has Sr and Nd characteristics consistent with a dominantly Himalayan source. Their 187Os/188Os ratios (~1.2-1.5) show that the average detrital material delivered by the Ganga-Brahmaputra (G-B) river system is not unusually radiogenic. A large difference in 187Os/188Os ratio exists between these Bengal Fan sediments and Ganga bedloads (187Os/188Os ~2.5, Pierson-Wickmann et al. (2000, doi:10.1016/S0012-821X(00)00003-0)). This difference mainly reflects addition of a less radiogenic Brahmaputra component, though mineralogical sorting and loss of radiogenic Os during transport may also play some role. The second sample group contains sediments from elsewhere in the Bay, particularly those located on the continental slope. They display Os isotopic compositions (0.99-1.11) similar to that of present seawater and higher Os and Re concentrations. These characteristics suggest the presence of a large hydrogenous contribution, consistent with the lower sedimentation rate of these samples. Sr and Nd ratios indicate that a significant fraction of these sediments is derived from erosion of non-Himalayan sources, such as the Indo-Burman range. These observations could be explained by the deflection of sediments from the G-B river system by westward currents in the head of the Bay. The third group contains only one sample, but shows that in addition to a Himalayan source, sediment discharge from Sri Lanka may influence the detrital component in the distal part of the fan. The similarity between the isotopic compositions of the group I R/V Sonne samples and those of Ocean Drilling Program Leg 116 (France-Lanord et al., 1993; Reisberg et al., 1997, doi:10.1016/S0012-821X(00)00003-0) suggests that the material eroding in the Himalayas has been roughly constant since the Miocene. The high Os isotopic ratios of leachates of both Sonne group I and Miocene Leg 116 sediments imply that much of the leachable highly radiogenic Os component was conserved during transport through the estuary or interaction with seawater. In constrast, samples with lower, but still relatively high, sedimentation rates (Sonne groups II and III and Pliocene Leg 116) seem to have significantly adsorbed or exchanged Os and Re with seawater. This suggests that in some cases the Os isotopic ratios of leachates of detrital sediments can be used to constrain the ancient marine Os record, or conversely, to date unfossiliferous sediments.

During Ocean Drilling Program Leg 210, a greatly expanded sedimentary sequence of continuous Cretaceous black shales was recovered at Site 1276. This section corresponds to the Hatteras Formation, which has been documented widely in the North Atlantic Ocean. The cored sequence extends from the lowermost Albian, or possibly uppermost Aptian, to the Cenomanian/Turonian boundary and is characterized by numerous gravity-flow deposits and sporadic, finely laminated black shales. The sequence also includes several sedimentary intervals with high total organic carbon (TOC) contents, in several instances of probable marine origin that may record oceanic anoxic events (OAE). These layers might correspond to the Cenomanian-Turonian OAE 2; the mid-Cenomanian event; and OAE 1b, 1c, and 1d in the Albian. In addition, another interval with geochemical characteristics similar to OAE-type layers was recognized in the Albian, although it does not correspond to any of the known OAEs. This study investigates the origin of the organic matter contained within these black shale intervals using TOC and CaCO3 contents, Corg/Ntot ratios, organic carbon and nitrogen isotopes, trace metal composition, and rock-eval analyses. Most of these black shale intervals, especially OAE 2 and 1b, are characterized by low 15N values (<0) commonly observed in mid-Cretaceous black shales, which seem to reflect the presence of an altered nitrogen cycle with rates of nitrogen fixation significantly higher than in the modern ocean.

Reassembled, Slightly Askew is an autobiographical, immersive audio-based artwork based on Shannon Sickels’ experience of falling critically ill with a rare brain infection and her journey of rehabilitation with an acquired brain injury. Audience members experience Reassembled individually, listening to the audio via headphones while lying on a bed. The piece makes use of binaural microphone technology and spatial sound design techniques, causing listeners to feel they are inside Shannon’s head, viscerally experiencing her descent into coma, brain surgeries, early days in the hospital, and re-integration into the world with a hidden disability. It is a new kind of storytelling, never done before about this topic, that places the listener safely in the first-person perspective with the aim of increasing empathy and understanding. Reassembled… was made through a 5-year collaboration with an interdisciplinary team of artists led by Shannon Sickels (writer & performer), Paul Stapleton (composer & sound designer), Anna Newell (director), Hanna Slattne (dramaturgy), Stevie Prickett (choreography), and Shannon’s consultant neurosurgeon and head injury nurse. It’s development and production has been made possible with the support of a Wellcome Trust Arts Award, the Arts Council NI, Sonic Arts Research Centre, Belfast's Metropolitan Arts Centre, and grants from the Arts & Disability Award Ireland scheme. In its 2015 premiere year, Reassembled had 99 shows across Northern Ireland, including at the Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival (the MAC, Belfast) and BOUNCE Arts & Disability Forum Festival (Lyric Theatre, Belfast). It was awarded 5 stars in the Stage, a Hospital Club h100 Theatre & Performance Award, and been shared at medical conferences and trainings across the UK. It continues to be presented in diverse artistic and educational contexts, including as part of A Nation’s Theatre Festival in 2016 at Battersea Arts Centre in London where it was given 4 star reviews in the Guardian, Time Out London and the Evening Standard.
