Stone-fruit activated carbon (SAC) and modified versions containing acidic oxygen and basic nitrogen groups have been used to prepare palladium catalysts by wet impregnation. Carbon supports and catalysts are investigated by thermo-gravimetric analysis, TPD, oxygen chemisorption, TEM and XPS. The influence of the nature of the functional groups on the dispersion and oxidation state of palladium and its activity in hydrogen oxidation is investigated. Pd dispersion is found to increase with the basic strength of functional groups on the support. XPS reveals that introduction of amine groups in SAC results in an increased proportion of Pd0, resistant to re-oxidation. Palladium catalysts supported on activated carbon modified by diethylamine groups are found to exhibit the highest metal dispersion and greatest activity in hydrogen oxidation. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. The enzyme S-adenosyl-L-homocysteine (AdoHcy) hydrolase effects hydrolytic cleavage of AdoHcy to adenosine (Ado) and L-homocysteine (Hcy). The cellular levels of AdoHcy and Hcy are critical because AdoHcy is a potent feedback inhibitor of crucial transmethylation enzymes. Also, elevated plasma levels of Hcy in humans have been shown to be a risk factor in coronary artery disease. ^ On the basis of the previous finding that AdoHcy hydrolase is able to add the enzyme-sequestered water molecule across the 5',6'-double bond of (halo or dihalohomovinyl)-adenosines causing covalent binding inhibition, we designed and synthesized AdoHcy analogues with the 5',6'-olefin motif incorporated in place of the carbon-5' and sulfur atoms. From the available synthetic methods we chose two independent approaches: the first approach was based on the construction of a new C5'-C6' double bond via metathesis reactions, and the second approach was based on the formation of a new C6'-C7' single bond via Pd-catalyzed cross-couplings. Cross-metathesis of the suitably protected 5'-deoxy-5'-methyleneadenosine with racemic 2-amino-5-hexenoate in the presence of Hoveyda-Grubb's catalyst followed by standard deprotection afforded the desired analogue as 5' E isomer of the inseparable mixture of 9'R/S diastereomers. Metathesis of chiral homoallylglycine [(2S)-amino-5-hexenoate] produced AdoHcy analogue with established stereochemistry E at C5'atom and S at C9' atom. The 5'-bromovinyl analogue was synthesized using the bromination-dehydrobromination strategy with pyridinium tribromide and DBU. ^ Since literature reports on the Pd-catalyzed monoalkylation of dihaloalkenes (Csp2-Csp3 coupling) were scarce, we were prompted to undertake model studies on Pd-catalyzed coupling between vinyl dihalides and alkyl organometallics. The 1-fluoro-1-haloalkenes were found to undergo Negishi couplings with alkylzinc bromides to give multisubstituted fluoroalkenes. The alkylation was trans-selective affording pure Z-fluoroalkenes. The highest yields were obtained with PdCl 2(dppb) catalyst, but the best stereochemical outcome was obtained with less reactive Pd(PPh3)4. Couplings of 1,1-dichloro-and 1,1-dibromoalkenes with organozinc reagents resulted in the formation of monocoupled 1-halovinyl product. ^

Template-directed synthesis is a promising route to realize vanadate-based 1-D nanostructures, an example of which is the formation of vanadium pentoxide nanotubes and associated nanostructures. In this work, we report the interchange of long-chained alkyl amines with alkyl thiols. This reaction was followed using gold nanoparticles prepared by the Chemical Liquid Deposition (CLD) method with an average diameter of ∼0.9 nm and a stability of ∼85 days. V2 O5 nanotubes (VOx-NTs) with lengths of ∼2 μm and internal hollow diameters of 20-100 nm were synthesized and functionalized in a Au-acetone colloid with a nominal concentration of ∼ 4 × 1 0- 3 mol dm-3. The interchange reaction with dodecylamine is found only to occur in polar solvents and incorporation of the gold nanoparticles is not observed in the presence of n-decane.

Understanding the microscopic mechanisms of electronic excitation in organic photovoltaic cells is a challenging problem in the design of efficient devices capable of performing sunlight harvesting. Here we develop and apply an ab initio approach based on time-dependent density functional theory and Ehrenfest dynamics to investigate photoinduced charge transfer in small organic molecules. Our calculations include mixed quantum–classical dynamics with ions moving classically and electrons quantum mechanically, where no experimental external parameter other than the material geometry is required. We show that the behavior of photocarriers in zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) and C60 systems, an effective prototype system for organic solar cells, is sensitive to the atomic orientation of the donor and the acceptor units as well as the functionalization of covalent molecules at the interface. In particular, configurations with the ZnPc molecules facing on C60 facilitate charge transfer between substrate and molecules that occurs within 200 fs. In contrast, configurations where ZnPc is tilted above C60 present extremely low carrier injection efficiency even at longer times as an effect of the larger interfacial potential level offset and higher energetic barrier between the donor and acceptor molecules. An enhancement of charge injection into C60 at shorter times is observed as binding groups connect ZnPc and C60 in a dyad system. Our results demonstrate a promising way of designing and controlling photoinduced charge transfer on the atomic level in organic devices that would lead to efficient carrier separation and maximize device performance.

Boron-doped diamond is a promising electrode material for a number of applications providing efficient carrier transport, a high stability of the electrolytic performance with time, a possibility for dye-sensitizing with photosensitive molecules, etc. It can be functionalized with electron donor molecules, like phthalocyanines or porphyrins, for the development of light energy conversion systems. For effective attachment of such molecules, the diamond surface has to be modified by plasma- or photo-chemical processes in order to achieve a desired surface termination. In the present work, the surface modifications of undoped and boron-doped nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) films and their functionalization with various phthalocyanines (Pcs) were investigated. The NCD films have been prepared by hot filament chemical vapor deposition (HFCVD) on silicon substrates and were thereafter subjected to modifications with O2 or NH3 plasmas or UV/O3 treatments for exchange of the H-termination of the as-grown surface. The effectiveness of the modifications and their stability with time during storage under different ambients were studied by contact angle measurements and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Furthermore, the surface roughness after the modifications was investigated with atomic force microscopy (AFM) and compared to that of as-grown samples in order to establish the appearance of etching of the surface during the treatment. The as-grown and the modified NCD surfaces were exposed to phthalocyanines with different metal centers (Ti, Cu, Mn) or with different side chains. The results of the Pc grafting were investigated by XPS and Raman spectroscopy. XPS revealed the presence of nitrogen stemming from the Pc molecules and traces of the respective metal atoms with ratios close to those in the applied Pc. In a next step Raman spectra of Ti-Pc, Cu-Pc and Mn-Pc were obtained with two different excitation wavelengths (488 and 785 nm) from droplet samples on Si after evaporation of the solvent in order to establish their Raman fingerprints. The major differences in the spectra were assigned to the effect of the size of the metal ion on the structure of the phthalocyanine ring. The spectra obtained were used as references for the Raman spectra of NCD surfaces grafted with Pc. Finally, selected boron doped NCD samples were used after their surface modification and functionalization with Pc for the preparation of electrodes which were tested in a photoelectrochemical cell with a Pt counter electrode and an Ag/AgCl reference electrode. The light sources and electrolytes were varied to establish their influence on the performance of the dye-sensitized diamond electrodes. Cyclic voltammetry measurements revealed broad electrochemical potential window and high stability of the electrodes after several cycles. The open circuit potential (OCP) measurements performed in dark and after illumination showed fast responses of the electrodes to the illumination resulting in photocurrent generation.

We exploit TiO2 surface functionalization as a tool to induce the crystallization process of CH3NH3PbI3xClx perovskite thin films resulting in a reduction of the degree of orientation of the (110) crystallographic planes. Notably, the variation of the film crystalline orientational order does not affect the photovoltaic performances of the perovskite-based devices, whose efficiency remains mostly unchanged. Our findings suggest that other factors are more significant in determining the device efficiency, such as the non-homogenous coverage of the TiO2 surface causing charge recombination at the organic/TiO2 interface, defect distribution on the perovskite bulk and at the interfaces, and transport in the organic or TiO2 layer. This observation represents a step towards the comprehension of the perovskite film peculiarities influencing the photovoltaic efficiency for high performance devices.

Background: Bio-conjugated nanoparticles are important analytical tools with emerging biological and medical applications. In this context, in situ conjugation of nanoparticles with biomolecules via laser ablation in an aqueous media is a highly promising one-step method for the production of functional nanoparticles resulting in highly efficient conjugation. Increased yields are required, particularly considering the conjugation of cost-intensive biomolecules like RNA aptamers. Results: Using a DNA aptamer directed against streptavidin, in situ conjugation results in nanoparticles with diameters of approximately 9 nm exhibiting a high aptamer surface density (98 aptamers per nanoparticle) and a maximal conjugation efficiency of 40.3%. We have demonstrated the functionality of the aptamer-conjugated nanoparticles using three independent analytical methods, including an agglomeration-based colorimetric assay, and solid-phase assays proving high aptamer activity. To demonstrate the general applicability of the in situ conjugation of gold nanoparticles with aptamers, we have transferred the method to an RNA aptamer directed against prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA). Successful detection of PSMA in human prostate cancer tissue was achieved utilizing tissue microarrays. Conclusions: In comparison to the conventional generation of bio-conjugated gold nanoparticles using chemical synthesis and subsequent bio-functionalization, the laser-ablation-based in situ conjugation is a rapid, one-step production method. Due to high conjugation efficiency and productivity, in situ conjugation can be easily used for high throughput generation of gold nanoparticles conjugated with valuable biomolecules like aptamers.

The gold(I)-catalyzed chemoselective dearomatization of β-naphthols is reported through a straightforward approach via [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement /allene-cyclyzation cascade processes. Easily accessed naphthyl-propargyl ethers and derivatives in this work are employed as starting materials. Delightfully, an array of deoramatized dyhydrofuryl -naphthalen-2(1H)-ones featured densely functional groups are obtained in high yields (up to 98%) in 10 min reaction time under extremely mild reaction conditions like reagent grade solvent and exposure to air. The potential of accessing to high enantioselectivety on the dearomatized dyhydrofuryl- naphthalen-2(1H)-ones is also approved by the good ee (65%) relying on (R)-xylyl- BINAP(AuCl)2. In addition, complete theoretical elucidation of the reaction pathway is also proposed which addresses a rationale for essential motivation such as regio- and chemoselectivity. Moreover, an efficient gold catalyzed intermolecular dearomatization of substituted β-naphthols with allenamides is presented here. PPh3AuTFA (5 mol %) approves the efficient dearomatively allylation protocol under mild conditions and exhibits high tolerance on substrates scope (24 examples) in good to excellent yield accompanied with high regioselectivity and stereoselectivity. Moreover, the synergistic catalytic system also highlight the synergistic function between the [PPh3Au]+ (π-acid) and TFA− (Lewis base). At last, a new chiral BINOL phosphoric acid silver salt is successfully synthesized and used as the chiral counter anion, which strongly promotes the enantioselectivity (up to 92%). At last but not least, crucially, SmI2 induced enantioselective formal synthesis of strychnine, a complex alkaloid and a classical target used to benchmark new synthetic methods is developed. Enantioselective dearomatising radical cyclisation on to the indole unit and further ET will then give organosamarium that is quenched diastereoselectively by the ester to deliver Strychnine in 7 steps.

Nowadays the leukodepletion is one of the most important processes done on the blood in order to reduce the risk of transfusion diseases. It can be performed through different techniques but the most popular one is the filtration due to its simplicity and efficiency. This work aims at improving a current commercial product, by developing a new filter based on Fenton-type reaction to cross-link a hydrogel on to the base material. The filters for leukodepletion are preferably made through the melt flow technique resulting in a non-woven tissue; the functionalization should increase the stability of the filter restricting the extraction of substances to minimum amount when in contact with blood. Through the modification the filters can acquire new properties including wettability, surface charge and good resistance to the extractions. The most important for leukodepletion is the surface charge due to the nature of the filtration process. All the modified samples results have been compared to the commercial product. Three different polymers (A, B and C) have been studied for the filter modifications and every modified filter has been tested in order to determine its properties.

The scope of this dissertation is to study the transport phenomena of small molecules in polymers and membranes for gas separation applications, with particular attention to energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. This work seeks to contribute to the development of new competitive selective materials through the characterization of novel organic polymers such as CANALs and ROMPs, as well as through the combination of selective materials obtaining mixed matrix membranes (MMMs), to make membrane technologies competitive with the traditional ones. Kinetic and thermodynamic aspects of the transport properties were investigated in ideal and non-ideal scenarios, such as mixed-gas experiments. The information we gathered contributed to the development of the fundamental understanding related to phenomenon like CO2-induced plasticization and physical aging. Among the most significant results, ZIF-8/PPO MMMs provided materials whose permeability and selectivity were higher than those of the pure materials for He/CO2 separation. The CANALs featured norbornyl benzocyclobutene backbone and thereby introduced a third typology of ladder polymers in the gas separation field, expanding the structural diversity of microporous materials. CANALs have a completely hydrocarbon-based and non-polar rigid backbone, which makes them an ideal model system to investigate structure-property correlations. ROMPs were synthesized by means of the ring opening metathesis living polymerization, which allowed the formation of bottlebrush polymers. CF3-ROMP reveled to be ultrapermeable to CO2, with unprecedented plasticization resistance properties. Mixed-gas experiments in glassy polymer showed that solubility-selectivity controls the separation efficiency of materials in multicomponent conditions. Finally, it was determined that plasticization pressure in not an intrinsic property of a material and does not represent a state of the system, but rather comes from the contribution of solubility coefficient and diffusivity coefficient in the framework of the solution-diffusion model.

In this work, two different protocols for the synthesis of Nb2O5-SiO2 with a sol-gel route in which supercritical carbon dioxide was used as solvent have been developed. The tailored design of the reactor allowed the reactants to come into contact only when supercritical CO2 is present, and the high-throughput experimentation scCO2 unit allowed the screening of synthetic parameters, that led to a Nb2O5 incorporation into the silica matrix of 2.5 wt%. N2-physisorption revealed high surface areas and the presence of meso- and micropores. XRD allowed to demonstrate the amorphous character of these materials. SEM-EDX proved the excellent dispersion of Nb2O5 into the silica matrix. These materials were tested in the epoxidation of cyclooctene with hydrogen peroxide, which is considered an environmentally friendly oxidant. The catalysts were virtually inactive in an organic, polar, aprotic solvent (1,4-dioxane). However, the most active scCO2 Nb2O5-SiO2 catalyst achieved a cyclooctene conversion of 44% with a selectivity of 88% towards the epoxide when tested in ethanol. Catalytic tests on cyclohexene revealed the presence of the epoxide, which is remarkable, considering that this substrate is easily oxidised to the diol. The behaviour in protic and aprotic solvents is compared to that of TS-1.
