We present a detailed quantum oscillation study of the Fermi surface of the recently discovered Yb-based heavy fermion superconductor beta-YbAlB4. We compare the data, obtained at fields from 10 to 45 T, to band structure calculations performed using the local density approximation. Analysis of the data suggests that f holes participate in the Fermi surface up to the highest magnetic fields studied. We comment on the significance of these findings for the unconventional superconducting properties of this material.

MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ calculations were performed on complexes of aluminium and boron trihydrides and trihalides with acetylene and ethylene. These complexes are linked through triel bonds where the triel center (B or Al) is characterized by the Lewis acid properties through its -hole region while -electrons of C2H2 or C2H4 molecule play the role of the Lewis base. Some of these interactions possess characteristics of covalent bonds, i.e., the Al--electrons links as well as the interaction in the BH3-C2H2 complex. The triel--electrons interactions are classified sometimes as the 3c-2e bonds. In the case of boron trihydrides, these interactions are often the preliminary stages of the hydroboration reaction. The Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules as well as the Natural Bond Orbitals approach are applied here to characterize the -hole--electrons interactions.

Angular field emission (FE) properties of vertically aligned carbon nanotube arrays have been measured on samples grown by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition and characterized by scanning electron microscope and I-V measurements. These properties determine the angular divergence of electron beams, a crucial parameter in order to obtain high brilliance FE based cathodes. From angular distributions of the electron beam transmitted through extraction grids of different mesh size and by using ray-tracing simulations, the maximum emission angle from carbon nanotube tips has been determined to be about ± 30 around the tube main axis. © 2012 American Institute of Physics.

We present a combined analytical and numerical study of the early stages (sub-100-fs) of the nonequilibrium dynamics of photoexcited electrons in graphene. We employ the semiclassical Boltzmann equation with a collision integral that includes contributions from electron-electron (e-e) and electron-optical phonon interactions. Taking advantage of circular symmetry and employing the massless Dirac fermion (MDF) Hamiltonian, we are able to perform an essentially analytical study of the e-e contribution to the collision integral. This allows us to take particular care of subtle collinear scattering processes - processes in which incoming and outgoing momenta of the scattering particles lie on the same line - including carrier multiplication (CM) and Auger recombination (AR). These processes have a vanishing phase space for two-dimensional MDF bare bands. However, we argue that electron-lifetime effects, seen in experiments based on angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, provide a natural pathway to regularize this pathology, yielding a finite contribution due to CM and AR to the Coulomb collision integral. Finally, we discuss in detail the role of physics beyond the Fermi golden rule by including screening in the matrix element of the Coulomb interaction at the level of the random phase approximation (RPA), focusing in particular on the consequences of various approximations including static RPA screening, which maximizes the impact of CM and AR processes, and dynamical RPA screening, which completely suppresses them. © 2013 American Physical Society.

Spectral and energetic characteristics of the cooperative recombination of high density electrons and holes in bulk GaAs are experimentally studied at room temperature. It is shown that the properties and parameters of femtosecond superradiant pulses are conditioned by the collective properties of electrons and holes. Electron-hole pairing and the formation of a short-living coherent e-h BCS state distinguish strongly the regime of cooperative emission from all radiative e-h recombination regimes, which have been observed earlier. The dependences of the energy gap (the order parameter), the Fermi energy, and the band gap of the coherent e-h BCS state on the concentration of electron-hole pairs are obtained.

The behavior of trapped electrons, in a dielectric close to the channel of a silicon SOI-FET, is studied by cryogenic microwave spectroscopy. On-resonance microwave excitation causes one of these trapped electrons to undergo spatial Rabi oscillations between widely separated trap sites. This charge displacement causes a change in the drain current of the transistor, resulting in high quality factor resonances in continuous wave spectroscopy. The potential of this effect for non-classical information processing is investigated through polychromatic single-shot spectroscopy, using on-resonance and difference frequencies. Interaction between different trapped electrons is seen in the post excitation behavior and the possibilities of quantum gate operations are discussed. © The Electrochemical Society.
