We did a numerical investigation of the propagation of short light pulses in the region of 1.55 mu m and the conversion efficiency (CE) for the four wave mixing generation (FWM) of ordinary and dispersion decreasing fibers for use in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems, Our simulations studies three different profiles, linear, hyperbolic. and constant, One conclude that for all the profiles there is decrease of the conversion efficiency with the increase in the channel separation. The hyperbolic profile present a higher efficiency of around 1000 above in magnitude compared with the others profiles at 0.2 nm of channel separation. We calculate the conversion efficiency versus the fiber length for the three profiles. The conversion efficiency for the hyperbolic profile is higher when compared to the constant and linear profiles. The other interesting point of the hyperbolic profile is that the increase of the CE in the beginning of the fiber does not show my oscillation in the CE value (log eta), which was observed for the constant and linear profiles. For all the profiles there is an increase of the conversion efficiency with the increase of the pump power. The compression factor C-i for the generated FWM signal at omega(3) was measured along the DDF's and the constant profile fibers. One can conclude that with the use of decreasing dispersion profile (DDF) fibers one can have a control of the (CE) conversion efficiency and the compression factor of the four wave mixing (FWM) generation in WDM systems. Multicolor and white light emissions have been achieved in Yb3+, Tm3+ and Ho3+ triply doped heavy metal oxide glasses upon laser excitation at 980 nm. The red (660 nm), green (547 nm) and blue (478 nm) up conversion emissions of the rare earth (RE) ions triply doped TeO2-GeO2-Bi2O3-K2O glass (TGBK) have been investigated as a function of the RE concentration and excitation power of the 980 nm laser diode. The most appropriate combination of RE in the TGBK glass host (1.6 wt% Yb2O3, 0.6 wt% Tm2O3 and 0.1 wt% Ho2O3) has been determined with the purpose to tune the primary colors (RGB) respective emissions and generate white light emission by varying the pump power. The involved infrared to visible up conversion mechanisms mainly consist in a three-photon blue up conversion of Tm3+ ions and a two-photon green and red up conversions of Ho3+ ions. The resulting multicolor emissions have been described according to the CIE-1931 standards. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Infrared-to-visible upconversion luminescence emission in Nd3+-doped 60TeO(2)-10GeO(2)-10K(2)O-10Li(2)O-10Nb(2)O(5) tellurite glasses under cw excitation around 800 nm is investigated. Blue (430, and 475 nm), green (5 0 nm) and yellow-orange (590 nm) energy upconversion emission owing to the P-2(1/2) --> I-4(j) (j=9/2, 11/2, 13/2 and 15/2) transitions of the Nd3+ ions, respectively, was recorded. The dependence of the upconversion intensity upon the excitation wavelength and pump power is also studied. The upconversion excitation mechanism responsible for the observed emission signals is attributed to stepwise multiphoton absorption. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Efficient energy upconversion of cw radiation at 1.064 mum into blue, red, and near infrared emission in Tm3+-doped Yb3+-sensitized 60TeO(2)-10GeO(2)-10K(2)O-10Li(2)O-10Nb(2)O(5) glasses is reported. Intense blue upconversion luminescence at 485 nm corresponding to the Tm3+ (1)G(4)--> H-3(6) transition with a measured absolute power of 0.1 muW for 800 mW excitation power at room temperature is observed. The experimental results also revealed a sevenfold enhancement in the upconversion efficiency when the sample was heated from room temperature to 235 degreesC yielding 0.7 muW of blue absolute fluorescence power for 800 mW pump power. High brightness emission around 800 nm (F-3(4)--> H-3(6)) in addition to a less intense 655 nm ((1)G(4)--> H-3(4) and F-3(2,3)--> H-3(6)) fluorescence is also recorded. The energy upconversion excitation mechanism for thulium emitting levels is assigned to multiphonon-assisted anti-Stokes excitation of the ytterbium-sensitizer followed by multiphonon-assisted sequential energy-transfer processes. Cooperative energy transfer upconversion luminescence is investigated in Tb(3+)/Yb(3+)-codoped PbGeO(3)-PbF(2)-CdF(2) glass-ceramic and its precursor glass under resonant and off resonance infrared excitation. Bright UV-visible emission signals around 384, 415, 438 nm, and 473-490, 545, 587, and 623 nm are identified as due to the (5)D(3)((5)G(6))->(7)F(1) (J=6,5,4) and (5)D(4)->(7)F(1) (J=6,5,4,3) transitions, respectively, and readily observed. The results indicate that cooperative energy transfer between ytterbium and terbium. ions followed by excited state absorption are the dominant upconversion excitation mechanisms involved. Comparison of the upconversion process in a glass-ceramic sample and its glassy precursor revealed that the former present much higher upconversion efficiency. The dependence of the upconversion emission upon pump power, temperature, and doping content is also examined.

Energy-transfer excited upconversion luminescence in Ho3+/Yb3+- and Tb3+/Yb3+ -codoped PbGeO3-PbF2-CdF2 glass and glass-ceramic under infrared excitation is investigated. In Ho3+/Yb3+-codoped samples, green (545 nm), red (652 nm), and near-infrared (754 nm) upconversion emission corresponding to the S-5(2) (F-5(4)) -> I-5(8), F-5(5) -> I-5(8), and S-5(2)(F-5(4)) -> I-5(7) transitions, respectively, was observed. Blue (490 nm) emission assigned to the F-5(2,3) -> I-5(8) transition was also detected. In the Tb3+/Yb3+-codoped system, bright UV-visible emission around 384, 415, 438, 473-490, 545, 587, and 623 nm, identified as due to the D-5(3)((5)G(6)) -> F-7(J)(J = 6, 5, 4) and D-5(4) -> F-7(J)(J = 6, 5, 4, 3) transitions, was measured. The comparison of the upconversion process in glass ceramic and its glassy precursor revealed that the former samples present much higher upconversion efficiencies. The dependence of the upconversion emission upon pump power, and doping contents was also examined. The results indicated that successive energy-transfer between ytterbium and holmium ions and cooperative energy-transfer between ytterbium and terbium ions followed by excited-state absorption are the dominant upconversion excitation mechanisms herein involved. The viability of using the samples for three-dimensional solid-state color displays is also discussed. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this work we report on visible upconversion emission in Er 3+-, and Ho3+-doped PbGeO3-PbF 2-CdF2-based transparent glass ceramics under 980 nm infrared excitation. In erbium-doped vitroceramic samples, blue(410 ran), green(530, and 550 nm) and red(660 nm) emission signals were generated, which were identified as due to the 2H9/2, 2H 11/2, 4S3/2, and 4F9/2 transitions to the 4I15/2 ground-state, respectively. Intense red(650 nm) upconversion emission corresponding to the 5F5 - 5I8 transition and very small blue(490 nm) and green(540 nm) signals assigned to the 5F 2,3 - 5I8 and 4S2, 5F4 - 5I8 transitions, respectively, were observed in the holmium-doped samples. The 540 nm is the dominant upconversion signal in Ho3+-doped vitroceramics under 850 nm excitation. The dependence of the upconversion processes upon pump power and doping concentration are also investigated, and the main routes for the upconversion excitation processes are also identified. The comparison of the upconversion process in transparent glass ceramics and the precursor glass was also examined and the results revealed that the former present higher upconversion efficiencies.

In this paper we present a new approach for thermal lens analysis using a two-wavelength DSPI (Digital Speckle Pattern Interferometry) setup for wavefront sensing. The employed geometry enables the sensor to detect wavefronts with small phase differences and inherent aberrations found in induced lenses. The wavefronts was reconstructed by four-stepping fringe evaluation and branch-cut unwrapping from fringes formed onto a diffusive glass. Real-time single-exposure contour interferograms could be obtained in order to get discernible and low-spacial frequency contour fringes and obtain low-noise measurements. In our experiments we studied the thermal lens effect in a 4% Er-doped CaO-Al2O3 glass sample. The diode lasers were tuned to have a contour interval of around 120 μm. The incident pump power was longitudinally and collinearly oriented with the probe beams. Each interferogram described a spherical-like wavefront. Using the ABCD matrix formalism we obtained the induced lens dioptric power from the thermal effect for different values of absorbed pump power. © 2012 Copyright SPIE.

This work reports on the infrared-to-visible CW frequency upconversion from planar waveguides based on Er3+-Yb3+-doped 100-xSiO(2)-xTa(2)O(5) obtained by a sol-gel process and deposited onto a SiO2-Si substrate by dip-coating. Surface morphology and optical parameters of the planar waveguides were analyzed by atomic force microscopy and the m-line technique. The influence of the composition on the electronic properties of the glass-ceramic films was followed by the band gap ranging from 4.35 to 4.51 eV upon modification of the Ta2O5 content. Intense green and red emissions were detected from the upconversion process for all the samples after excitation at 980 nm. The relative intensities of the emission bands around 550 nm and 665 nm, assigned to the H-2(11/2) -> I-4(15/2), S-4(3/2) -> I-4(15/2), and F-4(9/2) -> I-4(15/2) transitions, depended on the tantalum oxide content and the power of the laser source at 980 nm. The upconversion dynamics were investigated as a function of the Ta2O5 content and the number of photons involved in each emission process. Based on the upconversion emission spectra and 1931CIE chromaticity diagram, it is shown that color can be tailored by composition and pump power. The glass ceramic films are attractive materials for application in upconversion lasers and near infrared-to-visible upconverters in solar cells.

Here, we demonstrate the use of a colloidal CdSe:Te quantum dots suspension as active liquid-core in a specially designed optical element, based on a double-clad optical fiber structure. The liquid-core fiber was realized by filling the hollow core of a capillary and waveguiding of the core was ensured by using a liquid host that exhibits a larger refractive index than the cladding material of the capillary. Since the used capillary possessed a cladding waveguide structure, we obtained a liquid-core double-clad structure. To seal the liquid-core fiber and e.g. prevent the formation of bubbles, we developed a technique based on SMA connectors. The colloidal CdSe:Te quantum dots were excited by cladding-pumping using a pump laser at 532nm operating in the continuous-wave regime. We investigated the photoluminescence emitted from the colloidal CdSe:Te quantum dots suspension liquid-core and guided by the double-clad fiber structure. We observed a red shift of the (core) emission, that depends on the liquid-core fiber length and the pump power. This shift is due to the absorption of unexcited colloidal quantum dots and due to the waveguiding properties of the core. Here we report a core photoluminescence output power of 79.2μW (with an integrated brightness of ≈ 215.5 W/cm2sr ). Finally, we give an explanation, why lasing could not be observed in our experiments when setup as a liquid-core fiber cavity.
