Non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (MD) simulations require imposition of non-periodic boundary conditions (NPBCs) that seamlessly account for the effect of the truncated bulk region on the simulated MD region. Standard implementation of specular boundary conditions in such simulations results in spurious density and force fluctuations near the domain boundary and is therefore inappropriate for coupled atomistic-continuum calculations. In this work, we present a novel NPBC model that relies on boundary atoms attached to a simple cubic lattice with soft springs to account for interactions from particles which would have been present in an untruncated full domain treatment. We show that the proposed model suppresses the unphysical fluctuations in the density to less than 1% of the mean while simultaneously eliminating spurious oscillations in both mean and boundary forces. The model allows for an effective coupling of atomistic and continuum solvers as demonstrated through multiscale simulation of boundary driven singular flow in a cavity. The geometric flexibility of the model enables straightforward extension to nonplanar complex domains without any adverse effects on dynamic properties such as the diffusion coefficient. This work deals with the homogenization of an initial- and boundary-value problem for the doubly-nonlinear system D(t)w - del.(z) over right arrow = g(x, t, x/epsilon) (0.1) w is an element of alpha(u, x/epsilon) (0.2) (z) over right arrow is an element of (gamma) over right arrow (del u, x/epsilon) (0.3) Here epsilon is a positive parameter; alpha and (gamma) over right arrow are maximal monotone with respect to the first variable and periodic with respect to the second one. The inclusions (0.2) and (0.3) are here formulated as null-minimization principles, via the theory of Fitzpatrick MR 1009594]. As epsilon -> 0, a two-scale formulation is derived via Nguetseng's notion of two-scale convergence, and a (single-scale) homogenized problem is then retrieved. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. An optimal control problem in a two-dimensional domain with a rapidly oscillating boundary is considered. The main features of this article are on two points, namely, we consider periodic controls in the thin periodic slabs of period epsilon > 0, a small parameter, and height O(1) in the oscillatory part, and the controls are characterized using unfolding operators. We then do a homogenization analysis of the optimal control problems as epsilon -> 0 with L-2 as well as Dirichlet (gradient-type) cost functionals.

In this paper, we discuss the design of a manually operated soil compaction machine that is being used to manufacture stabilized soil blocks (SSB). A case study of manufacturing more than three million blocks in a housing project using manually operated machines is illustrated. The paper is focussed on the design, development, and evaluation of a manually operated soil compaction machine for the production of SSB. It also details the machine design philosophy, compaction characteristics of soils, employment generation potential of small-scale stabilized soil block productions systems, and embodied energy. Static compaction of partially saturated soils was performed to generate force-displacement curves in a confined compaction process were generated. Based on the soil compaction data engineering design aspects of a toggle press are illustrated. The results of time and motion study on block production operations using manual machines are discussed. Critical path network diagrams were used for small-scale SSB production systems. Such production systems generate employment at a very low capital cost.

Hard coatings on relatively soft substrate always face the danger of debonding along the interface. Interfacial stresses are considered to be the initial driving force for the interfacial debonding of the relatively strong bonded coatings. Interfacial stresses due to the mismatch of strain between the coating and substrate are simulated with FEM firstly. The distribution of the interfacial stresses is achieved, which confirms an excessive stresses concentration near the interface end. Subsequently, the redistribution of interfacial stresses is calculated for a coating with periodic segmentation cracks. Results indicate that the distribution of interfacial stresses is altered greatly with the periodic segmentation cracks. To reveal the effect of the spacing of the periodic segmentation cracks on the distribution of interfacial stresses, different crack density is modeled within the coating. It is found that that the peak values of the interfacial stresses decrease with the increase of crack density, i.e. with reduction of spacing of segmentation cracks.

The influence of surfactant on the breakup of a prestretched bubble in a quiescent viscous surrounding is studied by a combination of direct numerical simulation and the solution of a long-wave asymptotic model. The direct numerical simulations describe the evolution toward breakup of an inviscid bubble, while the effects of small but non-zero interior viscosity are readily included in the long-wave model for a fluid thread in the Stokes flow limit. The direct numerical simulations use a specific but realizable and representative initial bubble shape to compare the evolution toward breakup of a clean or surfactant-free bubble and a bubble that is coated with insoluble surfactant. A distinguishing feature of the evolution in the presence of surfactant is the interruption of bubble breakup by formation of a slender quasi-steady thread of the interior fluid. This forms because the decrease in surface area causes a decrease in the surface tension and capillary pressure, until at a small but non-zero radius, equilibrium occurs between the capillary pressure and interior fluid pressure. The long-wave asymptotic model, for a thread with periodic boundary conditions, explains the principal mechanism of the slender thread's formation and confirms, for example, the relatively minor role played by the Marangoni stress. The large-time evolution of the slender thread and the precise location of its breakup are, however, influenced by effects such as the Marangoni stress and surface diffusion of surfactant. © 2008 Cambridge University Press.

The mechanism of the formation of periodic segmentation cracks of a coating plated on a substrate with periodic subsurface inclusions (PSI) is investigated. The internal stress in coating and subsequently the strain energy release rate (SERR) of the segmentation cracks are computed with finite element method (FEM). And the effect of the geometrical parameters of the PSI is studied. The results indicate that the ratio of the width of the inclusion to the period of the repeated structure has an optimum value, at which the maximum internal tensile stress and SERR arise. On the other hand, the ratio of the max-thickness of the inclusion to the thickness of the coating has a threshold value, above which the further increase of this ratio should seldom influence the internal stress or the SERR.

A cyclic bending experiment is designed to investigate the interface fracture behaviour of a hard chromium coating on a ductile substrate with periodic surface hardened regions. The unique deflection pattern of the vertical cracks after they run through the coating and impinge at the interface is revealed experimentally. A simple double-layer elastic beam model is adopted to investigate the interfacial shear stresses analytically. A FE model is employed to compute the stresses of the tri-phase structure under a single round of bending, and to investigate the effect of the loading conditions on the deflection pattern of the vertical cracks at the interface.
