The termite problem in eucalyptus forest plantations in Brazil has been registered since 1908. The main termite pests can be separated in four groups: a) seedling/sapling termites; b) heartwood termites; c) bark termites and d) wood termites. The termites in the first group attack root and stalk bases of young eucalyptus plants. The most common species are Syntermes spp. and Cornitermes spp. and they are a serious obstacle to early eucalyptus developing. The heartwood termites attack formed trees destroying eucalyptus heartwood. Coptotermes testaceus is the most cited species in reports, but more species probably occur. Plant mortality caused by seedling/sapling termites vary of 10-70 %. There are not effective control methods to heartwood termites. The main seedling/sapling termite control strategy is the chemical barrier around root systems of plants. Nowadays, studies are being carried out to determine monitoring systems to termite infestations. Early results indicate that proportionally, few areas really need insecticide application, due to spatial distribution of termites to be aggregated. Therefore, it is necessary to develope techniques rationalizing insecticide utilization in eucalyptus plantations, to keep production systems feasible and to be suitable for environmental exigencies.

Studies on the cytogenetics of Homoptera are scarce. Some references in the literature have reported a chromosome number for the genus ranging from n=5 to 19 and 2n=10 to 2n=39 chromosomes. The genus Mahanarva includes two species of agricultural importance as pests of sugar cane culture in Brazil. We report here the first data concerning the chromosome number and morphology of the species Mahanarva fimbriolata and M. posticata. The chromosome number observed for the two species was 2n=19 for males and 2n=20 for females. The sex determining mechanism of these species was of the XX/X0 type (for males and females, respectively), with chromosome X being the smallest in the complement.

In some testicular lobes of the Pentatomidae there may be occurrence of atypical spermatogenesis or polymegaly, leading to the production of nonfertile sperm. The comparative analysis of spermatogenesis and nucleolar behavior in testicular lobes of Euschistus heros showed cells with polymegaly in lobes 4 and 6. Generally, when these lobes are present in the same individual, there is also the formation of atypical cells in the flanking lobe. Such characteristic was not seen in E. heros. However, differences regarding the concentration of heteropyknotic chromatin and silver-positive bodies in this lobe deserve attention. This study explored the literature and demonstrated the prevalence of some lobes in the formation of differentiated cells. It was also found in the literature that there is an association of the chromocenter with the nucleolus in several species of Pentatomidae, but in E. heros this association does not appear to occur. © 2010 Hederson Vinicius de Souza and Mary Massumi Itoyama.

The control of cotton pests may be accomplished using Bacillus thuringiensis Cry proteins. For this purpose, the objective of this work was to evaluate the insecticidal activity of a new Cry1Ia protein against neonatal larvae of Spodoptera frugiperda and Anthonomus grandis. The complete cry1Ia gene, previously obtained by PCR with oligonucleotide primers based on the sequenced gene, was cloned into the vector pET28a(+), introduced into Escherichia coli BL21(DE3) and expressed by induction with IPTG. The expression of the Cry1Ia protein was confirmed with molecular weight of approximately 81 kDa. The results demonstrated the efficiency of the bacterial system for the expression of B. thuringiensis Cry1Ia protein, which was subsequently used in quantitative bioassays against S. frugiperda and A. grandis larvae, resulting in an extremely toxic protein for both species. This characteristic is exceptionally important for obtaining transgenic cotton plants resistant to these pests.

Recent studies have shown that ingestion by the army worm Spodoptera frugiperda of Cry1Ac toxin from Bt cotton promotes histochemical and ultrastructural changes in the digestive cells of the predatory pentatomid bug Podisus nigrispinus. Therefore, mindful of the changes in the midgut of the predator, which represents the first line of defence in this insect, our aim was to test the hypothesis that the consumption of Bt cotton-fed S. frugiperda by P. nigrispinus might lead to alterations in components of the immune system of P. nigrispinus. The Cry1Ac toxin level in the leaves of Bt cotton, nitric oxide, phenoloxidase activity, and total proteins were quantified by ELISA. Total and differential hemocyte counts were evaluated, and hemocyte ultrastructure analysis was undertaken. We found that ingestion of the prey fed daily with approximately 23 ± 0.70 ng g-1 Cry1Ac by wet weight of leaves, and expressed by the Bt cotton, induces small ultrastructural changes in the predator's granulocytes and plasmatocytes. However, these changes did not affect the total number and differential and humoral variables analyzed for the bug's hemocytes. © 2013 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.
