Monodisperse rare-earth ion (Eu3+, Ce3+, Tb3+) doped LaPO4 particles with oval morphology were successfully prepared through a facile solvothermal process without further hear treatment. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), photoluminescence (PL) spectra and the kinetic decays were performed to characterize these samples. The XRD results reveal that all the doped samples are well crystalline at 180 degrees C and assigned to the monoclinic monazite-type structure of the LaPO4 phase. It has been shown that all the as-synthesized samples show perfectly oval morphology with narrow size distribution. The possible growth mechanism of the LapO(4):Ln has been investigated as well.

Sheaflike terbium phosphate hydrate hierarchical architectures composed of filamentary nanorods have been fabricated by a hydrothermal method. The X-ray diffraction patterns and thermogravimetric/differential thermal analysis investigations reveal that the obtained terbium phosphate hydrate has a structural formula of TbPO4 center dot H2O, which can be readily indexed to the hexagonal phase GdPO4 center dot nH(2)O in JCPDS file 39-0232. The evolution of the morphology of the products has been investigated in detail. It is found that the addition of CTAB and Na2H2L (disodium ethylenediamine tetraacetate) plays an important role in controlling the final morphology of the products. A possible formation mechanism of the sheaflike architectures was proposed according to the experimental results and analysis. In addition, the phase structure of the product changes to monoclinic phase when it is annealed at 750 degrees C for 2 h in N-2-H-2 atmosphere. Tetragonal chase TbPO4 can be obtained when annealed temperature increases to 1150 degrees C.

Here, we first report a facile one-step one-phase synthetic route to achieve size-controlled gold micro/nanoparticles with narrow size distribution by using o-diaminobenzene as a reducing agent in the presence of poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) via a simple wet-chemical approach. All experimental data including that from scanning-electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction techniques indicates that the gold micro/nanoparticles with a narrow size distribution were produced in high yield (similar to 100%).

Monodispersed nanoparticles of Ag(I)-polymer hybrids have been prepared by using designed crown-ether-centred two-armed copolymers to chelate Ag+ ions at the interface of organic-aqueous solutions. The copolymer-Ag+ complex nanoparticles, as well as the reduced copolymer-Ag nanoparticles, have been characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The particle size can be varied by simply changing the polymer concentration, the monomers, and/or the molecular weight. The copolymer-Ag(I) hybrids exhibit weak photoluminescence, which was substantially enhanced after the hybrids were reduced to copolymer-silver nanoparticles with UV irradiation.

Macroporous and modified macroporous poly(styrene-co-methyl methacrylate-co-divinylbenzene) particles (m-PS and mm-PS) supported Cp2ZrCl2 were prepared and applied to ethylene polymerization using methylaluminoxane (MAO) as cocatalyst. The influences of the swelling response of the support particles on the catalyst loading capabilities of the supports as well as on the activities of the supported catalysts were studied. It was shown that the Zr loadings of the supports and the activities of the supported catalysts increased with the swelling extent of the support particles. The m-PS or mm-PS supported catalysts exhibited very high activities when the support particles were well swollen, whereas those catalysts devoid of swelling treatment gave much lower activities. Investigation on the distribution of the supports in the polyethylene by TEM indicated that the swelling of the support particles allowed the fragmentation of the catalyst particles. In contrast, the fragmentation of the support particles with poor swelling was hindered during ethylene polymerization.

We have developed a two-phase approach for the synthesis of shape-controlled colloidal zirconia nanocrystals, including spherical-, teardrop-, rod-, and rice grain-shaped particles. We found that the key factors for controlling the shape were the reaction time, the nature of the capping agent, and the monomer concentration. We have analyzed the morphologies, crystallinity, optical properties, and structural features of the as-prepared ZrO2 nanoparticles by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM, X-ray powder diffraction, and UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. The possible nucleation and growth process is also discussed.

Morphological features of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) and high impact polypropylene (hiPP) particles produced in a multistage polymerization process were investigated by field-emission electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. Study was mainly focused on architecture of iPP particle and distribution of elastomer phase (EPR) within the preformed iPP matrix. The iPP particle is an agglomerate of many subglobules (ca. several to hundred microns in diameter), while the subglobule in turn is formed by a great deal of primary globules (ca. 100 nm in diameter). Large macropores between the subglobules and finely distributed micropores within the subglobule constitute a network of pore inside the iPP particle. Ethylene/propylene comonomers can diffuse into the macro- and micropores and copolymerize on catalyst active sites located on periphery of the pores, forming elastomer phase inside.

A novel solution-phase method for the preparation of Au@ZnO core-shell composites was described. With this method, the composites were grown without heating that is usually needed in other solution methods. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) results show that the diameter of Au@ZnO core-shell composites is about 10.5 nm. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was applied to characterize Au@ZnO core-shell composites. The optical properties of Au@ZnO core-shell composites, including UV-vis absorption and photo luminescence (PL), were observed at room temperature.

The behavior of electrical conductivity for excimer laser irradiated polyimide films in the vicinity of the critical number of laser shots was described by three-dimensional percolative phase transition model. It is: found that electrical conductivity changed more rapidly than that predicted by the percolation model. Thus, the change in microstructure with increasing number of laser shots was analyzed by FT-IR Raman spectrometry and laser desorption time-of-flight mass spectrometry. It is demonstrated that not only the number but also the average size of graphite particles on the irradiated polyimide film surfaces increased with increasing number of laser shots. These results were helpful to better understand the critical change in electrical conductivity on the irradiated polyimide film surfaces. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

An assay procedure utilizing pulsed amperometric detection at a platinum-particles modified electrode has been developed for the determination of cysteine and glutathione in blood samples following preliminary separation by reversed-phase liquid chromatography. A chemically modified electrode (CME) constructed by unique electroreduction from a platinum-salt solution to produce dispersed Pt particles on a glassy carbon surface was demonstrated to catalyze the electo-oxidation of sulfhydryl-containing compounds: DL-cysteine (CYS), reduced glutathione (GSH). When used as the sensing electrode in flow-system pulsed-amperometric detection (PAD), electrode fouling could be avoided using a waveform in which the cathodic reactivation process occurred at a potential of - 1.0 V vs. Ag/AgCl to achieve a cathodic desorption of atomic sulfur. A superior detection limit for these free thiols was obtained at a Pt particle-based GC electrode compared with other methods; this novel dispersed Pt particles CME exhibited high electrocatalytic stability and activity when it was employed as an electrochemical detector in FIA and HPLC for the determination of those organo-sulfur compounds.

A sensitive high-performance liquid chromatographic method has been developed for the quantitative determination of aminopyrine (AM) and its metabolite 4-aminoantipyrine (AAN). The method utilizes reverse-phase chromatography/amperometric detection with a glassy carbon electrode dispersed with alpha-arumina particles as the working electrode, on which the oxidation of AM and AAN was greatly improved compared with that on a bare glassy carbon electrode. As a result, the detection limit was as low as 1.4 ng for AM and 0.8 ng for AAN, and the calibration plots for the above compounds have wide linear ranges from 100 ng/mL to 100 mu g/mL and 60 ng/mL to 80 mu g/mL (for AM and AAN, respectively). The above method was applied for the detection of these materials in human urine with satisfactory results.

CoWO4 nano-particles were successfully synthesized at a low temperature of 270 degrees C by a molten salt method, and effects of such processing parameters as holding time and salt quantity on the crystallization and development Of CoWO4 crystallites were initially studied. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM). and photoluminescent spectra techniques (PL), respectively. Experimental results showed that the well-crystallized CoWO4 nano-particles with ca. 45 nm in diameter could be obtained at 270 degrees C for a holding time of 8 h with 6:1 mass ratio of the salt to CoWO4 precursor, and XRD analysis evidenced that the as-prepared sample was a pure monoclinic phase Of CoWO4 with wolframite structure. Their PL spectra revealed that the CoWO4 nano-particles displayed a very strong PL peak at 453 nm with the excitation wavelength of 230 nm, and PL properties of CoWO4 crystallites relied on their crystalline state, especially on their particle size. Nickel tungstate (NiWO4) nano-particles were successfully synthesized at low temperatures by a molten salt method, and characterized by Xray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and ultraviolet visible spectra techniques (UV-vis), respectively. The effects of calcining temperature and salt quantity on the crystallization and development of NiWO4 crystallites were studied. Experimental results showed that the well-crystallized NiWO4 nano-particles with about 30 nm in diameter could be prepared at 270 degrees C with 6:1 mass ratio of the salt to NiWO4 precursor. XRD analysis confirmed that the product was a pure monoclinic phase of NiWO4 with wolframite structure. UV-vis spectrum revealed that NiWO4 nano-particles had good light absorption properties in both ultraviolet and visible light region. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. The phase transformation of zirconia from tetragonal to monoclinic is characterized by UV Raman spectroscopy, visible Raman spectroscopy, and XRD. Electronic absorption Of ZrO2 in the UV region makes UV Raman spectroscopy more sensitive at the surface region than XRD or visible Raman spectroscopy. Zirconia changes from the tetragonal phase to the monoclinic phase with calcination temperatures elevated and monoclinic phase is always detected first by UV Raman spectroscopy for the samples calcined at lower temperatures than that by XRD and visible Raman spectroscopy. When the phase of zirconia changes from tetragonal to monoclinic, the slight changes of the phase at very beginning can be detected by UV Raman spectroscopy. UV Raman spectra clearly indicate that the phase transition takes place initially at the surface regions. It is found that the phase change from tetragonal to monoclinic is significantly retarded when amorphous Zr(OH)(4) was agglomerated to bigger particles and the particle agglomeration of amorphous zirconium hydroxide is beneficial to the stabilization of t-ZrO2 phase.
