The dynamics of a fluid in a vertical tube, subjected to an oscillatory pressure gradient, is studied experimentally for both a Newtonian and a viscoelastic shear-thinning fluid. Particle image velocimetry is used to determine the two-dimensional velocity fields in the vertical plane of the tube axis, in a range of driving amplitudes from 0.8 to 2.5 mm and of driving frequencies from 2.0 to 11.5 Hz. The Newtonian fluid exhibits a laminar flow regime, independent of the axial position, in the whole range of drivings. For the complex fluid, instead, the parallel shear flow regime exhibited at low amplitudes [Torralba, Phys. Rev. E 72, 016308 (2005)] becomes unstable at higher drivings against the formation of symmetric vortices, equally spaced along the tube. At even higher drivings the vortex structure itself becomes unstable, and complex nonsymmetric structures develop. Given that inertial effects remain negligible even at the hardest drivings (Re < 10(-1)), it is the complex rheology of the fluid that is responsible for the instabilities observed. The system studied represents an interesting example of the development of shear-induced instabilities in nonlinear complex fluids in purely parallel shear flow.

Globally unstable wakes with co-flow at intermediate Reynolds numbers are studied, to quantify important spatial regions for the development and control of the global instability. One region of high structural sensitivity is found close to the inlet for all wakes, in agreement with previous findings for cylinder wakes. A second, elongated region of high structural sensitivity is seen downstream of the first one for unconfined wakes at Re = 400. When base flow modifications are considered, a spatially oscillating sensitivity pattern is found inside the downstream high structural sensitivity region. This implies that the same change in the base flow can either destabilize or stabilize the flow, depending on the exact position where it is applied. It is shown that the sensitivity pattern remains unchanged for different choices of streamwise boundary conditions and numerical resolution. Actual base flow modifications are applied in selected configurations, and the linear global modes recomputed. It is confirmed that the linear global eigenvalues move according to the predicted sensitivity pattern for small amplitude base flow modifications, for which the theory applies. We also look at the implications of a small control cylinder on the flow. Only the upstream high sensitivity region proves to be robust in terms of control, but one should be careful not to disturb the flow in the downstream high sensitivity region, in order to achieve control. The findings can have direct implications on the numerical resolution requirements for wakes at higher Reynolds numbers. Furthermore, they provide one more possible explanation to why confined wakes have a more narrow frequency spectrum than unconfined wakes.

The prediction of turbulent oscillatory flow at around transitional Reynolds numbers is considered for an idealized electronics system. To assess the accuracy of turbulence models, comparison is made with measurements. A stochastic procedure is used to recover instantaneous velocity time traces from predictions. This procedure enables more direct comparison with turbulence intensity measurements which have not been filtered to remove the oscillatory flow component. Normal wall distances, required in some turbulence models, are evaluated using a modified Poisson equation based technique. A range of zero, one and two equation turbulence models are tested, including zonal and a non-linear eddy viscosity models. The non-linear and zonal models showed potential for accuracy improvements.

The SR-protein kinase activity was analyzed and the cytological changes were observed during oocyte maturation in bisexual transparent color crucian carp ( Carassius auratus color variety). The results revealed that the SR-protein kinase activity was sensitive to the artificially induced spawning hormones, and the change of oscillatory activity was similar to that of the maturation-promoting factor (MPF) kinase that regulates meiotic cell cycle in fish.

An exact quantum master equation formalism is constructed for the efficient evaluation of quantum non-Markovian dissipation beyond the weak system-bath interaction regime in the presence of time-dependent external field. A novel truncation scheme is further proposed and compared with other approaches to close the resulting hierarchically coupled equations of motion. The interplay between system-bath interaction strength, non-Markovian property, and required level of hierarchy is also demonstrated with the aid of simple spin-boson systems. The magneto-transport properties of a narrow quantum waveguide with lateral multibarrier modulation are investigated theoretically. It is found that the magnetoconductance as a function of Fermi energy or magnetic field exhibits square-wave-like oscillations. In the presence of magnetic field, the edge states are formed near each barrier and the boundaries. Therefore, the number of edge states increases with the number of lateral barriers, leading to the increase of the propagating modes. On the other hand, owing to the tunneling effect a pair of edge states around the barrier region with opposite moving directions may be coupled and formed a circulating localized state, leading to the quenching of the related propagating states. The resulting dispersion relation exhibits oscillation structures superimposed on the bulk Landau levels. These novel conductance characteristics may provide potential applications to the fabrication of new quantum devices.
