Losing sleep : examining the cascading effects of supervisors' experience of injustice on subordinates' psychological health

In this paper, we identify two types of injustice as antecedents of abusive supervision and ultimately of subordinate psychological distress and insomnia. We examine distributive justice (an individual's evaluation of their input to output ratio compared to relevant others) and interactional injustice (the quality of interpersonal treatment received when procedures are implemented). Using a sample of Filipinos in a variety of occupations, we identify two types of injustice experienced by supervisors as stressors that provoke them to display abusive supervision to their subordinates. We examine two consequences of abusive supervision - subordinate psychological distress and insomnia. In addition, we identify two moderators of these relationships, namely, supervisor distress and subordinate self-esteem. We collected survey data from multiple sources including subordinates, their supervisors, and their partners. Data were obtained from 175 matched supervisor-subordinate dyads over a 6-month period, with subordinates' partners providing ratings of insomnia. Results of structural equation modelling analyses provided support for an indirect effects model in which supervisors' experience of unfair treatment cascades down the organization, resulting in subordinate psychological distress and, ultimately in their insomnia. In addition, results partially supported the proposed moderated relationships in the cascading model. © 2010 Taylor & Francis.

First-principles electronic structure of the delafossites ABO(2) (A=Cu, Ag, Au; B=Al, Ga, Sc, In, Y): evolution of d(10)-d(10) interactions

While bonding between d(10) atoms and ions in molecular systems has been well studied, less attention has been paid to interactions between such seemingly closed shell species in extended inorganic solids. In this contribution, we present visualizations of the electronic structures of the delafossites ABO(2) (A = Cu, Ag, Au) with particular emphasis on the nature of d(10)-d(10) interactions in the close packed plane of the coinage metal ion. We find that on going from Cu to Ag to Au, the extent of bonding between A and A increases. However, the structures (in terms of distances) of these compounds are largely determined by the strongly ionic 13,11 0 interaction and for the larger B ions Sc, In and Y, the A atoms are sufficiently well-separated that A-A bonding is almost negligible. We also analyze some interesting differences between Ag and Au, including the larger A-O covalency of the Au. The trends in electronic structure suggest that the Ag and Au compounds are not good candidate transparent conducting oxides. (C) 2002 Editions scientifiques et medicales Elsevier SAS. Bird and mammal conservation in Gaoligongshan Region and Jingdong County, Yunnan, China: patterns of species richness and nature reserves

Elevational and latitudinal patterns of species richness for birds and mammals were compared with human population density in relation to nature reserve designation in two areas of Yunnan Province, China. Results suggest that species richness is not the same for the two areas. In Gaoligongshan Region, species richness is inversely correlated with elevation and altitude, while reserve designation is positively correlated with elevation and latitude. In Jingdong County, reserve designations are positively correlated with elevation, but species richness shows no clear trends. In general, the present situation is strongly influenced by human activities. It appears that reserve designation is mismatched with species richness in Gaoligongshan Region, while there is a better fit between the two in Jingdong County. In both areas, however, it appeared that reserves were located primarily in order to reduce conflict with humans rather than to maximize conservation of biodiversity, probably because humans were responsible for forest-especially primary forest-destruction and degradation in the low-lying areas.

THE YELLOW-TO-BLUE INTENSITY RATION (Y/B) OF DY-3+ EMISSION

Various borates, vanadates, niobates, antimonates, titanates, zirconates and CaS doped with Dy3+ were prepared. Factors which have an effect on the yellow-to-blue intensity ratio (Y/B) of Dy3+ emission are reported. Y/B increases with decreasing Z/r or electronegativity of the next-neighbour element M in the complex oxides Dy-O-M. The greater the degree of covalency between Dy3+ and O2-, the greater Y/B is. When Dy3+ is located at a site with an inverse centre and high symmetry, Dy3+ displays no luminescence. It seems that Y/B of Dy3+ located at a site deviated from an inverse centre is greater than that of Dy3+ located at a site without an inverse centre. Y/B does not vary much with the variation in concentration of Dy3+ when Dy3+ is substituted for an element with the same valency, but it does depend on the concentration of Dy3+ when Dy3+ is substituted for an element with a different valency in the matrix, because defects are formed in this case.

Report for the British Board of Film Classification on viewers of the Lord of the Rings, aged under 16

This is a report on what can be learnt from our world dataset about viewers of The Lord of the Rings who were aged under 16. In this report, I draw both on the world set, and on the UK subset, sometimes drawing comparisons between them. The reason for using both is that, obviously, the world set is so much larger (comprising 24,739 in toto, with 2475 under 16), but the UK set (comprising 3115 in toto, and 306 under 16s) allows us to explore both some of the specificities of responses here, the qualitative meaning of some responses (given we worked in 14 languages, many are inaccessible to us for analysis), and of course their relations to the quantitative patterns that emerge.
