Histological and ultrastructural analyses of gills were observed in Nile tilapia collected from three different waterbodies in southeast Brazil: an urban lake in a park in the city of São Paulo, a reservoir in a rural city, and a commercial aquaculture facility. These aterbodies were analyzed and classified as hypereutrophic, eutrophic, and supereutrophic, respectively, with 310.00, 94.00, 28.00 of phosphate (PO2_ 4 lg L _1) and 65.49, 24.95, 12.83 of chlorophyll (lg L _1). A significant difference in the histological alterations index (HAI) was observed only in fish from the urban lake, with the presence of cell hypertrophy, hyperplasia, aneurism, and other alterations. When compared to the other groups, a large quantity of rodlet cells was also observed in the urban group. These results demonstrate the correlation of eutrophic states of water with gill morphology. Also discussed is the premise that large amounts of organic material dissolved in water can alter the morphology of the fish gills

Mites as parasites infesting fish have been described in a few case reports involving Histiostoma anguillarum, H. papillata, and Schwiebea estradai. We describe the unexpected occurrence of oribatid mites of the genus Trhypochthoniellus on farmed tilapia Oreochromis niloticus. The fish had mites on the skin, fins, and gills, as well as in the mouth. The morphological characteristics of the mites, observed by optical and scanning electron microscopy, were consistent with those described for T. longisetus longisetus. All stages of development were observed, suggesting that the mites were able to actively reproduce on fish

Gillnets are popularly used in commercial fishing on both Lake kioga and lake Victoria. On Lake kioga the legal mesh size is from 4½ (114) upwards while on Lake Victoria, a multifishery lake, various mesh sizes are in operation. However, the fishermen on these lakes still use the smaller meshes to be able to harvest certain categories of fish especially Oreochromis species group whose catch rates are already on the decline due to either use of small mesh size nets, high fishing pressure and to L.Kioga in particular, predation by lates niloticus.

The present study was undertaken to try and find out why Lates niloticus and Oreochromis nilolicus have managed to co-exist in Lake Victoria (Kenya sector). The study is considered to be of tremendous scientific value not only because Lates has been accused of preying on the cichlid stocks in L.Victoria but also for considering suitable management approaches to maintain viable fishery resources on long-term basis. The results presented are preliminary and the final detailed results will be presented later when the survey will have been accomplished.

During storage of smoke-dried fish, various biochemical reactions can occur; they will result in product acceptability or rejection. To determine these changes, pH and humidity were measured and molds were counted on smoke-dried fish stored for 6 months. A sensory analysis was also conducted to assess the quality of the products. Infestations and losses linked to it have been estimated by counting the insects and weighing of fish batches over time. The variability in the quality of smoke-dried fish depending on the time of purchase and storage was also integrated with our study. Biochemical reactions are mainly oxidation phenomena which result in a decrease of pH and release of spoilage odors such as rancid odor (> 1.5/ 3) or sulfur, acid and moldy odors. The growth of mold (1- 36 CFU / g) due to the reabsorption of water by fish contributes to this olfactory and visual spoilage. Beyond 90 days of storage, smoke-dried fish bought in the dry season begins to be rejected (> 2/3), while the fish bought in the wet season is at the limit of acceptability (2/3) even at the beginning of storage. During the first 90 days of storage, the insect infestation generates between 10 and 60 % of losses. A salt content of 8 % appears to be effective against the infestation but contributes to the deterioration of the product when stored in rooms with higher than 65 % relative humidity.

Selenium is an essential nutrient for many organisms, including fish. It can be released in the water by natural processes of dissolving rocks and minerals, and by the wastewater from industries and agricultural activities, which can increase its concentration in the environment, leading to toxic effects to the aquatic biota. Median Lethal Concentrations (LC(50-96h)) of two forms of selenium were estimated to fingerlings of Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus, focusing on estimating indicators for future environmental risk assessments in aquatic ecosystems contaminated with those elements, particularly for evaluate sources of water quality suitable for rearing tilapia. The results were: LC(50-96h) of sodium selenite (Na(2)SeO(3)) = 4.42 mg Se(4+) L(-1), and LC(50-96h) of sodium selenate (Na(2)SeO(4)) = 14,67 mg Se(6+) L(-1). According to those data, it was possible to classify sodium selenite as highly toxic and sodium selenate as moderately toxic to fingerlings of tilapia.

Potassium permanganate is a chemical compound widely used in aquaculture for the control and removal of parasites, and in the prevention of diseases caused by bacteria and fungi. However, this compound can be toxic to fish, being a strong oxidant. Moreover, there is no consistent information in the literature about its toxicity to non-target organisms. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the acute toxicity (LC50;96h) of potassium permanganate for tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, and to determine its toxic effects on nontarget organisms using ecotoxicological assays performed with the microcrustacean Ceriodaphnia dubia and with the green microalgae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata. The results showed that the concentration of 1.81 mg L-1 of potassium permanganate caused acute toxic effect in tilapia fingerlings. The ecotoxicological assays demonstrated that concentrations above 0.12 mg L-1 can cause chronic toxic effects on non-target organisms, indicating possible deleterious effects on the food chain of the aquatic ecosystem that may receive the discharge of effluents released by fish cultures treated with this chemotherapy. All toxic concentrations determined in this study were below those recommended in the literature for the use of this chemotherapy in fish cultures, demonstrating that this type of therapy should be more carefully considered in order to avoid damage to the treated fish and to the environment.

Animals show behavioral and physiological changes that emerge in response to environmental perturbations (i.e., emergency life-history stages). In this study, we investigate the effects of light intensity on aggressive encounters and social stability in groups of adult male Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus, 1758). The study compared the behavior observed under low (280.75 ± 50.60 lx) and high (1394.14 ± 520.32 lx) light intensities, with 12 replicates for each treatment. Adult fish were isolated in 36-L aquaria for 96 hours, and three males were grouped for 11 days in 140-L aquaria. Agonistic behavior was video-recorded (10 min/day) on the 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th day to quantify aggressive interactions and social stability. There was an effect of light intensity and day of observation on the total number of agonistic behaviors performed by the fish group. Besides, increased frequency of aggressive interactions (the sum of the four sessions) by the alpha, beta and gamma fish occurred at the higher light intensity. The dominance ranks of the fish remained unchanged across the observation sessions under both the low and high light intensities. We concluded that enhanced light intensity has a cumulative effect that increases the aggressiveness of the Nile tilapia but that this effect is not sufficiently strong to destabilize the social hierarchy.

A research was conducted in thirty approximately 100 sq.m earthern ponds of the Brackishwater Aquaculture Centre (BAC), College of Fisheries, University of the Philippines, Leganes Iloilo from November 7, 1982 to March 7, 1983 to evaluate the effects of nine supplemental feeds containing different protein: energy ratios on the growth and survival of Tilapia nilotica in brackishwater ponds. Nine supplemental feeds formulated were with protein levels of 20%, 25%, and 30% each at three energy levels of 3,000 kcals; 3,500 kcals; and 4,000 kcals. There was a control treatment with no feeding so that mean weight gain growth rate, feed conversion rate, and survival were determined. Fish fingerlings were acclimated from 0-29 ppt. salinity before the experiment and 20% of fish in each treatment were sampled after every 30 days. Growth rates were significantly different and increased with increasing energy level at the 30% protein feeds but decreased at high energy levels in the 20% and 25% protein feeds. Feed conversion was significantly different due to interaction between protein and energy levels in the feeds, and was better at the 30:3,500 kcals feeds having a feed conversion of 1.55 g. Survival was not significantly different
