Polska zrobiła w obszarze reform w latach 2009-2011 pierwsze kroki w kierunku, na który patrzymy bardzo życzliwie. Jednak pierwsze kroki wymagają kroków kolejnych – bardziej stanowczych i bardziej skoordynowanych, opartych na fundamencie zmian już wprowadzanych w życie – którym będzie towarzyszyć przekonująca wizja przyszłości, a także adekwatne do skali przewidywanych zmian publiczne nakłady finansowe. Wizja jest niezbędna. Wspólnota akademicka, a przede wszystkim jej najmłodsze pokolenie, musi wiedzieć, na jakich podstawach ma budować swoją akademicką przyszłość i czy jest w stanie się w niej odnaleźć. Warto jasno powiedzieć, że z czasem pojawi się bardziej zróżnicowany system instytucji szkolnictwa wyższego, o różnych możliwościach i różnych zadaniach w różnych miejscach, realizujących różne misje i oferujących różne możliwości awansowe i finansowe. Warto powiedzieć, że niezbędne – ale i możliwe – będą pionowe migracje w ramach różnicującego się systemu w zależności od indywidualnych zdolności, umiejętności, pracowitości, a przede wszystkim mierzalnych osiągnięć naukowych. Należy także przypomnieć, że profesja akademicka nie daje równych szans wszystkim, ponieważ talenty naukowe w ramach wspólnoty akademickiej nie rozkładają się równo, ale z pewnością daje duże szanse najzdolniejszym; że w najlepszych ośrodkach naukowy wymiar kariery akademickiej, tak jak w świecie zachodnim, jest najważniejszy, a wszystkie pozostałe są tylko jego tłem; że z czasem wzorce pracy akademickiej i wzorce akademickich zarobków – w wybranych miejscach i dla wybranych grup badaczy – będą przypominać wzorce znane z najlepszych systemów zachodnich; i wreszcie, że w tych wybranych miejscach (zwanych uniwersytetami badawczymi czy flagowymi) uprawianie nauki nie będzie jednostkowym, częściowo niezrozumiałym i częściowo jedynie tolerowanym, hobby.

We have investigated the (001) surface structure of lithium titanate (Li2TiO3) using auger electron spectroscopy (AES), low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Li2TiO3 is a potential fusion reactor blanket material. After annealing at 1200 K, LEED demonstrated that the Li2TiO3(001) surface was well ordered and not reconstructed. STM imaging showed that terraces are separated in height by about 0.3 nm suggesting a single termination layer. Moreover, hexagonal patterns with a periodicity of ∼0.4 nm are observed. On the basis of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, these are interpreted as a dynamic arrangement of Li atoms.

Pineal melatonin release exhibits a circadian rhythm with a tight nocturnal pattern. Melatonin synthesis is regulated by the master circadian clock within the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) and is also directly inhibited by light. The SCN is necessary for both circadian regulation and light inhibition of melatonin synthesis and thus it has been difficult to isolate these two regulatory limbs to define the output pathways by which the SCN conveys circadian and light phase information to the pineal. A 22-h light-dark (LD) cycle forced desynchrony protocol leads to the stable dissociation of rhythmic clock gene expression within the ventrolateral SCN (vlSCN) and the dorsomedial SCN (dmSCN). In the present study, we have used this protocol to assess the pattern of melatonin release under forced desynchronization of these SCN subregions. In light of our reported patterns of clock gene expression in the forced desynchronized rat, we propose that the vlSCN oscillator entrains to the 22-h LD cycle whereas the dmSCN shows relative coordination to the light-entrained vlSCN, and that this dual-oscillator configuration accounts for the pattern of melatonin release. We present a simple mathematical model in which the relative coordination of a single oscillator within the dmSCN to a single light-entrained oscillator within the vlSCN faithfully portrays the circadian phase, duration and amplitude of melatonin release under forced desynchronization. Our results underscore the importance of the SCN`s subregional organization to both photic input processing and rhythmic output control.

Circadian rhythms are regarded as essentially ubiquitous features of animal behavior and are thought to confer important adaptive advantages. However, although circadian systems of rodents have been among the most extensively studied, most comparative biology is restricted to a few related species. In this study, the circadian organization of locomotor activity was studied in the subterranean, solitary north Argentinean rodent, Ctenomys knightii. The genus, Ctenomys, commonly known as Tuco-tucos, comprises more than 50 known species over a range that extends from 12S latitude into Patagonia, and includes at least one social species. The genus, therefore, is ideal for comparative and ecological studies of circadian rhythms. Ctenomys knightii is the first of these to be studied for its circadian behavior. All animals were wild caught but adapted quickly to laboratory conditions, with clear and precise activity-rest rhythms in a light-dark (LD) cycle and strongly nocturnal wheel running behavior. In constant dark (DD), the rhythm expression persisted with free-running periods always longer than 24h. Upon reinstatement of the LD cycle, rhythms resynchronized rapidly with large phase advances in 7/8 animals. In constant light (LL), six animals had free-running periods shorter than in DD, and 4/8 showed evidence of splitting. We conclude that under laboratory conditions, in wheel-running cages, this species shows a clear nocturnal rhythmic organization controlled by an endogenous circadian oscillator that is entrained to 24h LD cycles, predominantly by light-induced advances, and shows the same interindividual variable responses to constant light as reported in other non-subterranean species. These data are the first step toward understanding the chronobiology of the largest genus of subterranean rodents.

PHENIX has measured the electron-positron pair mass spectrum from 0 to 8 GeV/c(2) in p + p collisions at root s = 200 GeV. The contributions from light meson decays to e(+)e(-) pairs have been determined based on measurements of hadron production cross sections by PHENIX. Within the systematic uncertainty of similar to 20% they account for all e(+)e(-) pairs in the mass region below similar to 1 GeV/c(2). The e(+)e(-) pair yield remaining after subtracting these contributions is dominated by semileptonic decays of charmed hadrons correlated through flavor conservation. Using the spectral shape predicted by PYTHIA, we estimate the charm production cross section to be 544 +/- 39(stat) +/- 142(syst) +/- 200(model) pb. which is consistent with QCD calculations and measurements of single leptons by PHENIX. Toll-like receptors (TLRs), a family of mammalian receptors, are able to recognize nucleic acids. TLR3 recognizes double-stranded (ds)RNA, a product of the replication of certain viruses. Polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid, referred to as poly(I:C), an analog of viral dsRNA, interacts with TLR3 thereby eliciting immunoinflammatory responses characteristic of viral infection or down-regulating the expression of chemokine receptor CXCR4. It is known that dsRNA also directly activates interferon (IFN)-induced enzymes, such as the RNA-dependent protein kinase (PKR). In the present study, the mRNA expression of TLR3, CXCR4, IFN gamma and PKR was investigated in a culture of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) stimulated with poly(I:C) and endogenous RNA from human PBMCs. No cytotoxic effect on the cells or on the proliferation of CD3(+), CD4(+) and CD8(+) cells was observed. TLR3 expression in the PBMCs in the presence of poly(I:C) was up-regulated 9.5-fold, and TLR3 expression in the PBMCs treated with endogenous RNA was down-regulated 1.8-fold (p=0.002). The same trend was observed for IFN gamma where in the presence of poly(I:C) an 8.7-fold increase was noted and in the presence of endogenous RNA a 3.1-fold decrease was observed. In the culture activated with poly(1:C), mRNA expression of CXCR4 increased 8.0-fold and expression of PKR increased 33.0-fold. Expression of these genes decreased in the culture treated with endogenous RNA when compared to the culture without stimulus. Thus, high expression of mRNA for TLR3, IFN gamma, CXCR4 and PKR was observed in the presence of poly(I:C) and low expression was observed in the cells cultured with endogenous RNA. In conclusion, TLR3 may play major physiological roles that are not in the context of viral infection. It is possible that RNA released from cells could contain enough double-stranded structures to regulate cell activation. The involvement of endogenous RNA in endogenous gene expression and its implications in the regulation thereof, are still being studied, and will have significant implications in the future.

A permanente busca pelo aumento da competitividade, impulsionada pela concorrência acirrada devida à globalização dos mercados, leva as empresas a adotarem estratégias diferenciadoras para assegurarem o seu desenvolvimento. Uma das fontes mais profícuas de estratégias diferenciadoras provém de usos inovadores de tecnologias, com ênfase em Tecnologias da Informação (TI’s). O domínio e adoção destas tecnologias podem se configurar como competência essencial e mantenedora da competitividade da empresa, pela geração de diferenciais estratégicos de gestão. Há, então, a necessidade de um maior conhecimento e compreensão de uma nova dinâmica empresarial com o uso intensivo de TI’s, com os correspondentes impactos na gestão das organizações, decorrentes desta busca permanente da flexibilização, agilização e de redução de custos como diferenciais competitivos. Esta pesquisa identifica os facilitadores na implantação de um método de gestão empresarial baseado no uso intensivo de nova TI’s. É um estudo de caso de uma empresa que atua no segmento de construção civil, no estado do Paraná, que o implantou. A pesquisa é do tipo qualitativa, utilizando-se para a coleta de dados da técnica de entrevista em profundidade aplicada a todos os membros da empresa. As conclusões desta pesquisa indicam a existência de características, fatores e elementos, atuando como facilitadores estratégicos para a implementação da gestão baseada em TI's, e para a empresa poder usufruir de agilidade e segurança nas interações e comunicações. Por sua vez a independência e flexibilidade de locais físicos e de horários, para a operacionalização deste novo método de gestão, geram a necessidade de desenvolvimento de um novo perfil do trabalhador, com a possibilidade do profissional trabalhar de modo mais auto-suficiente e a qualquer tempo e em qualquer lugar, o que supõe facilitadores individuais, inerentes aos indivíduos. A implantação de métodos de gestão com o uso intensivo de TI’s, conduz a significativas alterações de rotinas, acarretando em vantagens e desvantagens para a empresa, que também foram explicitadas e descritas nesta pesquisa.

O experimento foi realizado com o objetivo de comparar o desempenho produtivo de duas linhagens comerciais de poedeiras debicadas em diferentes idades na fase de recria. Foram utilizadas 250 aves da linhagem Lohmann (LSL) e 250 aves da linhagem Isa Babcock (IB), debicadas em diferentes idades. A primeira debicagem foi realizada no 8º dia de idade e a segunda na 8ª, 10ª, 12ª ou 14ª semana de idade. Um grupo de 32 aves permaneceu com o bico intacto e outro não foi submetido à segunda debicagem. O delineamento utilizado foi em blocos ao acaso, em esquema fatorial 2x6 (linhagens x idade de debicagem). Não foi verificado efeito significativo da idade de debicagem sobre os parâmetros produtivos analisados, exceto a melhoria significativa na produção de ovos. As aves da linhagem LSL apresentaram melhores resultados para maturidade sexual, peso médio dos ovos, produção de ovos/ave dia, porcentagem de ovos quebrados e conversão alimentar, quando comparadas às aves da linhagem IB. Embora a prática da debicagem tenha melhorado a porcentagem de postura, os resultados evidenciaram que os parâmetros produtivos analisados foram mais influenciados pela linhagem do que pela idade de debicagem.

This study was carried out to verify the morphology of the spina mentalis. We observed 275 human adult mandibles of both sexes and ethnic groups. An analysis of the results allows the following conclusions. The spina mentalis exists in 90.04% ±1.8 of the mandibles of Whites and Negroes. The typical form with four tubercles, as described by some authors, is rarely found. In most cases it is characterized by the presence of: two upper tubercles (27.27%±7.2), two superior tubercles and one inferior (24.72%±6.7), and one elongated median tubercle (24.0%±6.6); The forms and volumes of the tubercles are very irregular and seem not to depend on age, sex or ethnic group. The spina was absent in 9.8%±3.2 of the cases, especially in mandibles of White teethless individuals. An hypertrophic spina mentalis, generally formed at the expense of the upper tubercle, was observed in only 1.45%±0.5 of the cases.
