From June 1995 to August 2002 we assessed green turtle (Chelonia mydas) population structure and survival, and identified human impact, at Bahia de los Angeles, a large bay that was once the site of the greatest sea turtle harvest rates in the Gulf of California, Mexico. Turtles were captured live with entanglement nets and mortality was quantified through stranding surveys and flipper tag recoveries. A total of 14,820 netting hours (617.5 d) resulted in 255 captures of 200 green turtles. Straight-carapace length and mass ranged from 46.0-100.0 cm (mean = 74.3 +/- 0.7 cm) and 14.5-145.0 kg (mean = 61.5 +/- 1.7 kg), respectively. The size-frequency distribution remained stable during all years and among all capture locations. Anthropogenic-derived injuries ranging from missing flippers to boat propeller scars were present in 4% of captured turtles. Remains of 18 turtles were found at dumpsites, nine stranded turtles were encountered in the study area, and flipper tags from seven turtles were recovered. Survival was estimated at 0.58 for juveniles and 0.97 for adults using a joint live-recapture and dead-recovery model (Burnham model). Low survival among juveniles, declining annual catch per unit effort, and the presence of butchered carcasses indicated human activities continue to impact green turtles at this foraging area.

Aims: To estimate (i) Australian government taxation revenue collected from the consumption of alcohol by adolescents and (ii) the amount spent by the government on interventions aimed at educating adolescents about the potential dangers of alcohol use. Design: Secondary data analysis. Setting: Australia. Findings: Australian adolescents (aged between 12 and 17 years, inclusive) spent approximately $217 million on alcoholic beverages in 2002, netting the Australian government approximately $112 million in tax revenue. This resulted in an average of $195 earned in tax per adolescent drinker. It is estimated that the Government spent approximately $17 million on adolescent drinking interventions in 2002, equating to an expenditure of about $10.51 per adolescent on the delivery of alcohol interventions. For every dollar spent on alcohol interventions aimed at adolescents, it is estimated that the government receives around $7 in alcohol tax revenue. Conclusions: A substantial disparity exists between the amount of tax revenue received by the Australian Government from adolescent drinkers and the overall amount spent in attempting to prevent and relieve some of the problems associated with adolescent problem drinking. Background Dyslexia is the most common form of specific learning difficulty affecting approximately 6% of the general UK population and believed to affect approximately 2% of UK medical students. The impact of dyslexia on early practice has not been studied. Objectives To develop an understanding of the challenges faced by doctors with dyslexia in the first year of practice and their support requirements. Methods Semistructured telephone interviews were conducted with seven foundation year 1 doctors with dyslexia from Scottish hospitals between March 2013 and August 2013. Results Foundation doctors indicated that due to their dyslexia, they experience difficulty with all forms of communication, time management and anxiety. There were concerns about disclosure of their dyslexia to colleagues and supervisors. Coping strategies used frequently were safety-netting and planning; technology solutions did offer some assistance. Conclusions Although technological interventions have the potential to offer benefits to foundation doctors with dyslexia, increased openness about a diagnosis of dyslexia with discussion between doctor and supervisors about the challenges and anxieties is likely to provide the most benefit

The present research, undertaken in a mangrove swamp in northeastern Brazil (Mamanguape River Estuary), examined the factors that led to the overwhelming acceptance of the tangle-netting technique by crab harvesters in detriment to the now illegal tamping technique. Both techniques are the only ones currently used at our study site and in many other areas in Brazil, despite being prohibited by law. Data were collected through direct observations to determine capture efficiency, productivity, daily production, selectivity, and harvesting effort, and through interviews with crab harvesters, focusing on their perceptions of the capture techniques, the conditions of crab stocks and the sales price of a dozen crabs. Our results indicated that the two capture techniques did not significantly differ in terms of their efficiency or productivity, but daily production rates differed significantly, being greater using tangle-netting. The tangle-netting permits a greater harvesting effort (6 hours and 34 min) compared to tamping (4 hours and 19 min). Tangle-netting is also less selective than tamping indicated by the larger number of captured smaller specimens, including females. This results in a lower average sales price for a dozen crabs caught by tangle-netting (US$ 0.95) compared to tamping (US$ 1.02). The greater daily production of crab harvesters using the tangle-netting technique nevertheless increased their net gain, explaining their preference for this method, Given that tangle-netting results in greater harvesting pressure but lower selectivity compared to tamping, it may potentially be less sustainable. All of the crab harvesters interviewed having more than 20 years of experience (n = 34) stated they perceived that stocks of U. cordatus had become reduced over the last 20 years, together with average crab sizes. It is now important to examine the structure of the local U. cordatus population and to assess its fishery to allow evaluating whether the illegal, but prominent tangle-netting and tamping mangrove crab capture techniques are sustainable or not. We further suggest improving the dialogue between decision makers and fishermen, which barely exists to date, to initiate a discussion about possible ways of resolving the current situation of illegality of the fishermen. This will be key to achieving effective sustainable co-management of this important natural mangrove forest resource.

Fish species diversity in Lake Nabugabo, Uganda, has declined following establishment of the introduced fish species in the lake. Most of the native fish species have disappeared and the lake is now dominated by the introduced Nile perch, Lates niloticus and the Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus. The dominant native fish species include Synodontis afrofischeri, Schilbe intermedius, Rastrineobola argentea and Brycinussadleri. Some of the native fish species that have disappeared from Lake Nabugabo were reported to occur in lakes Kayugi and Kayanja, which are adjacent to Lake Nabugabo but separated from it by extensive papyrus swamps. The Nabugabo lakes are satellite water bodies in the Lake Victoria basin, which is known to have experienced fish species changes due to the introduction of the Nile perch Lates niloticus during the 1960s.The Nabugabo lakes comprising of Lake Nabugabo main, and the smaller lakes Kayanja and Kayugi were investigated between 2000 and 2002 with experimental gill netting to evaluate the potential of these lakes in conservation of fish species diversity. Results show that some native fish species especially Oreochromis esculentus, and Oreochromis variabilis and the haplochromine cichlid Prognathochromis venator that have disappeared from Lake Nabugabo still occur in Lakes Kayanja and Kayugi. Inshore habitats with macrophyte cover were also found to be important habitats for the endangered native fish species in the Nabugabo lakes. These lakes and inshore habitats need to be protected to conserve the endangered native fish species and to reduce further decline in fish species diversity.

This project survey on cost-net was conducted at the Northern portion of Lake Victoria and Upper Victoria Nile. The selected fish -Landing sites, where sampling exercises were carried out include: Loco, Jinja pier (covering Lake Victoria) and Railway bridge, New bridge and Kalange (covering upper Victoria Nile). Research was focused on the cast-net design, target commercial fish stocks, impact of cast-net on the fish stocks, mesh-size and techniques ofcast-netting. The research results show that cast-net fishery destroys fish breeding and nursery grounds and other fish ecosystem. The gear targets Oreochromis niloticus and Occassional by catches e.g. Lates niloticus, Mormyrus Kannume Bagrus docmak and Clarias gariepinus. The multi-panel cast-net of mesh-sizes ranging from i (5lmm) to 6' (152mm) were adaptable by fishermen but they mostly caught immature fish. Nevertheless, this gear showed highest efficiency compared to other gears used at the project area. These research results will be useful to researchers, extension workers and Fishenes, students under taking special research or study on this gear.

The evaluation of the mesh opening stiffness of fishing nets is an important issue in assessing the selectivity of trawls. It appeared that a larger bending rigidity of twines decreases the mesh opening and could reduce the escapement of fish. Nevertheless, netting structure is complex. A netting is made up of braided twines made of polyethylene or polyamide. These twines are tied with non-symmetrical knots. Thus, these assemblies develop contact-friction interactions. Moreover, the netting can be subject to large deformation. In this study, we investigate the responses of netting samples to different types of solicitations. Samples are loaded and unloaded with creep and relaxation stages, with different boundary conditions. Then, two models have been developed: an analytical model and a finite element model. The last one was used to assess, with an inverse identification algorithm, the bending stiffness of twines. In this paper, experimental results and a model for netting structures made up of braided twines are presented. During dry forming of a composite, for example, the matrix is not present or not active, and relative sliding can occur between constitutive fibres. So an accurate modelling of the mechanical behaviour of fibrous material is necessary. This study offers experimental data which could permit to improve current models of contact-friction interactions [4], to validate models for large deformation analysis of fibrous materials [1] on a new experimental case, then to improve the evaluation of the mesh opening stiffness of a fishing net

Discards from five of the most important fisheries (crustacean trawling, fish trawling, demersal purse seining, pelagic purse seining and trammel netting) in southern Portugal were studied and compared. A total of 236 species of all taxa were discarded, with fish and cephalopods accounting for more than 90% of the discarded biomass, except trammel nets (81%). Although there was some overlapping of species, multivariate analysis using cluster analysis for classification and multidimensional scaling (MDS) for ordination, showed that there were significant differences between the five gears in terms of species composition and biomasses discarded, with the least similarity between crustacean trawling and all other fishing operations. The differences between fisheries were probably as a result of a combination of gear selectivity and depth fished. The results suggest that discarding practices are likely to have different, yet significant impacts on the marine ecosystem, warranting further studies on the fate of discards, the factors influencing discarding and mitigation.
