In recent years studies concerning the applications of lignocellulosic/ inorganic couples have resulted in the development of an interesting class of functional materials. In this work a cellulose/NbOPO 4.nH 2O hybrid using cellulose from surgacane bagasse was prepared and characterized in order to test for adsorption applications. The preparation process was conducted by carrying out metallic niobium dilution in hydrofluoric acid in the presence of nitric acid, then adding boric acid to form the complex and, finally, the cellulose sugar cane bagasse was added. Concentrated phosphoric acid was also inserted to precipitate hydrous niobium phosphate particles in the cellulose fiber. This material was characterized by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), thermogravimetry (TG/DTG), and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) connected to an energy dispersive spectrophotometer (EDS). Results by SEM/EDS show that NbOPO 4.nH 2O was present in structure of the cellulose. During the preparation of the material, using boric acid it was observed that the formation of precipitate occurred in a shorter time than the material prepared without boric acid.

The paper evaluates the effects of organic and inorganic fertilizers on the growth of okra (variety NH-Ae 47-4. Organic fertilizers (cow dung and poultry droppings) and inorganic (NPK 15:15:15 and Urea 64:0) fertilizers were used for the experiment. The fertilizers were weighed and applied at 5g, 10g and 15g and were replicated three times and each having a control. Vegetative growth parameters taken include, shoot fresh weight (g), dry weight (g), plant height (cm), leaf number, stem girth (cm), leaf area (cm2). The results obtained from the experiment showed that the effect of the treatments were significantly difference from the control for all the parameters accessed with urea fertilizer having least effect. Plants treated with poultry litters have best performance by recording the highest fresh and dry weight (0.39g) at 4 weeks after planting (WAP); highest stem height 29.33cm for all the concentrations applied. Similarly, it has highest leaf area and stem girth (64.67cm2and 2.23cm respectively) at 8WAP.

The X-ray crystal structures of 4-butyl-1,2-diphenylpyrazolidine-3,5-dione (phenylbutazone)(I). and its 2 : 1 complex (II) with piperazine have been determined by direct methods and the structures refined to R 0.096 (2 300 observed reflections measured by diffractometer) and 0.074 (2 494 observed reflections visuallyestimated). Crystals are monoclinic, space group P21/c; for (I)a= 21.695(4), b= 5.823(2), c= 27.881(4)Å, = 108.06 (10)°, Z= 8, and for (II)a= 8.048(4), b= 15.081(4), c= 15.583(7)Å, = 95.9(3)°, Z= 2. The two crystallographically independant molecules in the structure of (I) are similar except for the conformation of the butyl group, which is disordered in one of the molecules. In the pyrazolidinedione group, the two C–C bonds are single and the two C–O bonds double. The two nitrogen atoms in the five-membered ring are pyramidal with the attached phenyl groups lying on the opposite sides of the mean plane of the ring. The phenylbutazone molecule in (II) exists as a negative ion owing to deprotonation of C-4. C-4 is therefore trigonal and the orientation of the Bu group with respect to the pyrazolidinedione group is considerably different from that in (I); there is also considerable electron delocalization along the C–O and C–C bonds. These changes in geometry and electronic structure may relate to biological activity. The doubly charged cationic piperazine molecule exists in the chair form with the nitrogen atoms at the apices. The crystal structure of (II) is stabilized by ionic interactions and N–H O hydrogen bonds.

The dodecapeptide Boc-(Ala-Leu-Aib)(4)-OMe crystallized with two independent helical molecules in a triclinic cell. The two molecules are very similar in conformation, with a 3(10)-helix turn at the N-terminus followed by an alpha-helix, except for an elongated N(7)...O(3) distance in both molecules. All the helices in the crystal pack in a parallel motif. Eleven water sites have been found in the head-to-tail region between the apolar helices that participate in peptide-water hydrogen bonds and a network of water-water hydrogen bonds. The crystal parameters are as follows: 2(C58H104N12O15)+ca. 10H(2)O, space group P1 with a = 12.946(2), b = 17.321(3), c = 20.465(4) Angstrom, alpha = 103.12(2), beta = 105.63(2), gamma = 107.50(2)degrees, Z = 2, R = 10.9% for 5152 data observed > 3 sigma(F), resolution 1.0 Angstrom. In contrast to the shorter sequences [Karle et al. (1988)Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 85, 299-303] and Boc-(Ala-Leu-Aib)(2)-OMe [Karle et al. (1989) Biopolymers 28, 773-781], no insertion of a water molecule into the helix is observed. However, the elongated N---O distance between Ala(7) NH and Aib(3) CO in both molecules (molecule A, 3.40 Angstrom; molecule B, 3.42 Angstrom) is indicative of an incipient break in the helices. The diruthenium(III) complex [Ru2O(O2CAr)2(MeCN)4(PPh3)2](ClO4)2 (1), on reaction with 1,2-diaminoethane (en) in MeOH at 25-degrees-C, undergoes nucleophilic attacks at the carbon of two facial MeCN ligands to form [(Ru2O)-O-III(O2CAr)2-{NH2CH2CH2NHC(Me)NH}2(PPh3)2](ClO4)2 (2) (Ar = C6H4-p-X, X = H, Me, OMe, Cl) containing two seven-membered amino-amidine chelating ligands. The molecular structure of 2 with Ar = C6H4-p-OMe was determined by X-ray crystallography. Crystal data are as follows: triclinic, P1BAR, a = 13.942 (5) angstrom, b = 14.528 (2) angstrom, c = 21.758 (6) angstrom, alpha = 109.50 (2)-degrees, beta = 92.52 (3)-degrees, gamma = 112.61 (2)-degrees, V = 3759 (2) angstrom 3, and Z = 2. The complex has an {Ru2(mu-O)(mu-O2CAr2)2(2+)} core. The Ru-Ru and average Ru-O(oxo) distances and the Ru-O-Ru angle are 3.280 (2) angstrom, 1.887 [8] angstrom, and 120.7 (4)-degrees, respectively. The amino group of the chelating ligand is trans to the mu-oxo ligand. The nucleophilic attacks take place on the MeCN ligands cis to the mu-oxo ligand. The visible spectra of 2 in CHCl3 display an absorption band at 565 nm. The H-1 NMR spectra of 2 in CDCl3 are indicative of the formation of an amino-amidine ligand. Complex 2 exhibits metal-centered quasireversible one-electron oxidation and reduction processes in the potential ranges +0.9 to +1.0 V and -0.3 to -0.5 V (vs SCE), respectively, involving the Ru(III)2/Ru(III)Ru(IV) and Ru(III)2/Ru(II)Ru(III) redox couples in CH2Cl2 containing 0.1 M TBAP. The mechanistic aspects of the nucleophilic reaction are discussed.

A series of novel hexasubstituted cyclophosphazene hydrazones [N(3)P(3)(-OC(6)H(4)-p-CH=N-NH-C(O)-C(6)H(4)-p-X)(6)] (X = H, Br, Cl, F, OH, OCH(3), CH(3), NO(2), NH(2)) were prepared by a sixfold condensation reaction of [N(3)P(3)(-OC(6)H(4)-p-CHO)(6)] with para-substituted benzoic hydrazides [NH(2)-NH-C(O)-C(6)H(4)-p-X] with excellent yields (91-98%). The structures of the compounds were confirmed by elemental analysis, FT-IR, (1)H, (13)C, (31)P, 2D-HSQC NMR and mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF). All the synthesized cyclophosphazene hydrazones exhibit high thermal stability. The crystal structure of a homogeneously substituted hexakis(4-formylphenoxy)-cyclotriphosphazene was determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/n with a = 16.558(3) angstrom, b = 10.250(2) angstrom, c = 23.429(5) angstrom, alpha = gamma = 90.00 degrees, beta = 90.461(4)degrees, V = 3976.5(14) angstrom(3) and Z = 4. The R value is 0.0823 for 4290 observed reflections. The conformations of the 4-formylphenoxy-groups are different at the three phosphorus atoms. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The solution conformations of the -hybrid oligopeptides Boc-Aib-4(R)Val]n-OMe (n = 1-8) in organic solvents have been probed by NMR, IR, and CD spectroscopic methods. In the solid state, this peptide series favors C12-helical conformations, which are backbone-expanded analogues of 310 helices in -peptide sequences. NMR studies of the six- (n = 3) and 16-residue (n = 8) peptides reveal that only two NH protons attached the N-terminus residues Aib(1) and 4(R)Val(2) are solvent-exposed. Sequential NiH-Ni+1H NOEs characteristic of local helical conformations are also observed at the residues. IR studies establish that chain extension leads to a large enhancement in the intensities of the hydrogen-bonded NH stretching bands (3343-3280 cm-1), which suggest elongation of intramolecularly hydrogen-bonded structures. The development of C12-helical structures upon lengthening of the sequence is supported by the NMR and IR observations. The CD spectra of the ()n peptides reveal a negative maximum at ca. 206 nm and a positive maximum at ca. 192 nm, spectral feature that are distinct from those of 310 helices in -peptides.

A simple and efficient protocol for the synthesis of novel 2,6-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-1-methylpiperidin-4-one oxime esters 4(a-q) is described. Initially, p-anisaldehyde 1 was condensed (Mannich reaction) with acetone and ammonium acetate trihydrate afforded 2,6-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)piperidin-4-one 2. Then, methylation followed by oximation with hydroxylamine hydrochloride (NH(2)OHa (TM) HCl) furnished a key scaffold 4. Further, to explore the enhanced biological properties of the piperidin-4-one core i.e. the key scaffold 4 was conjugated with substituted benzoyl chlorides in the presence of anhydrous K2CO3 as base to obtain novel 2,6-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-1-methylpiperidin-4-one oxime esters 4(a-q) in excellent yields. The newly synthesized compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, IR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR and mass spectroscopic techniques, and screened for their in vitro antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Most of the compounds exerted positive efficacy towards the biological assays performed. Among the synthesized analogues, compounds 4l and 4m exhibited promising antioxidant activity and on the other hand compounds 4b and 4d manifested persuasive antibacterial activity, whereas compound 4b displayed stupendous antifungal activity against A. flavus strain.

A comprehensive analysis of the crystal packing and the energetic features of a series of four biologically active molecules belonging to the family of substituted 4-(benzylideneamino)-3-(4-fluoro-3-phenoxyphenyl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole-5-(4 H)-thione derivatives have been performed based on the molecular conformation and the supramolecular packing. This involves the formation of a short centrosymmetric R-2(2)(8) NH...S supramolecular synthon in the solid state, including the presence of CH...S, CH...O, CH...N, CH...F, CH...Cl, CF...FC, CCl...ClC, and CH...pi intermolecular interactions along with pp stacking to evaluate the role of noncovalent interactions in the crystal. The presence of such synthons has a substantial contribution toward the interaction energy (-18 to -20 kcal/mol) as obtained from the PIXEL calculation, wherein the Coulombic and polarization contribution are more significant than the dispersion contribution. The geometrical characteristics of such synthons favor short distance, and the population of related molecules having these geometries is rare as has been obtained from the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD). Furthermore, their interaction energies have been compared with those present in our molecules in the solid state. The topological characteristics of the NH...S supramolecular synthon, in addition to related weak interactions, CH...N, CH...Cl, CF...FC, and CCl...ClC, have been estimated using the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM). In addition, an analysis of the Hirshfeld surface and associated fingerprint plots of these four molecules also have provided a platform for the evaluation of the contribution of different atom...atom contacts, which contribute toward the packing of the molecules in solids.

The deposition of CdO center dot nH(2)O On CdTe nanoparticles was studied in an aqueous phase. The CdTe nanocrystals (NCs) were prepared in aqueous solution through the reaction between Cd2+ and NaHTe in the presence of thioglycolic acid as a stabilizer. The molar ratio of the Cd2+ to Te2- in the precursory solution played an important role in the photoluminescence of the ultimate CdTe NCs. The strongest photoluminescence was obtained under 4.0 of [Cd2+]/[Te2-] at pH similar to 8.2. With the optimum dosage of Cd(II) hydrous oxide deposited on the CdTe NCs, the photoluminescence was enhanced greatly. The photoluminescence of these nanocomposites was kept constant in the pH range of 8.0-10.0, but dramatically decreased with an obvious blue-shifted peak while the pH was below 8.0. In addition, the photochemical oxidation of CdTe NCs with cadmium hydrous oxide deposition was markedly inhibited.

The taxonomy of Aphanizomenon flos-aquae strain NH-5, a producer of cyanotoxins, was re-evaluated by comparison with six other Aphanizomenon strains using morphological characteristics and 16S rRNA gene sequences. Strain NH-5 was concluded to be improperly identified as Aph. flos-aquae based upon (1) lack of bundle formation in the trichomes, (2) location of akinetes next to heterocytes, (3) lower similarities (less than 97.5%) in the 16S rRNA gene sequences relative to Aph. flos-aquae strains, and (4) comparison within a phylogenetic tree constructed from 16S rRNA gene sequences. The Aphanizomenon strains investigated in this study are classified to four morphological groups as described by the classical taxonomy of Komarek & Kovacik (1989). This classification was supported from the phylogenetic results of 16S rRNA gene sequences. This study also discusses the generic boundaries between Aphanizomenon and Anabaena.
