Ethnopharmacological relevance: Uncaria tomentosa (Willd.) DC (Rubiaceae) is a species native to the Amazon rainforest and surrounding tropical areas that is endowed with immunomodulatory properties and widely used around the world. In this study we investigated the immunomodulatory potential of Uncaria tomentosa (UT) aqueous-ethanol extract on the progression of immune-mediated diabetes.Materials and methods: C57BL/6 male mice were injected with MLDS (40 mg/kg) and orally treated with UT at 10-400 mg/kg during 21 days. Control groups received MLDS alone or the respective dilution vehicle. Pancreatic mononuclear infiltrate and beta-cell insulin content were analyzed by HE and immunohistochemical staining, respectively, and measured by digital morphometry. Lymphocyte immunophenotyping and cytokine production were determined by flow cytometry analysis. Results: Treating the animals with 50-400 mg/kg of UT caused a significant reduction in the glycemic levels, as well as in the incidence of diabetes. The morphometric analysis of insulitis revealed a clear protective effect. Animals treated with UT at 400 mg/kg presented a higher number of intact islets and a significant inhibition of destructive insulitis. Furthermore, a significant protection against the loss of insulin-secreting presented beta-cells was achieved, as observed by a careful immunohistochemical evaluation. The phenotypic analysis indicated that the groups treated with higher doses (100-400 mg/kg) presented CD4(+) and CD8(+) T-cell values similar to those observed in healthy animals. These same higher doses also increased the number of CD4(+)CD25(+)Foxp3(+) regulatory T-cells. Moreover, the extract modulated the production of Th1 and Th2, with increased levels of IL-4 and IL-5.Conclusions: The extract was effective to prevent the progression of immune-mediated diabetes by distinct pathways. In order to investigate the action of the juvenile hormone (JH) on honeybee caste differentiation two exocrine glands, Koschewnikow and Dufour glands, were chosen for study. Two combs (I & II) were taken from a single posture of a queen to use for this research. In comb I the larvae were treated with a topical application of JH in Acetone, and those from the comb II (control group) received only Acetone. Immediately after the emergence of the workers, their glands were dissected and prepared for microscopic measurements. The results showed cell area reduction in the Koschewnikow gland induced by the JH application. The results for the Dufour gland displayed taller epithelial cells with the JH application. The difference in glandular responses to the JH relates to gland function, hormone targets, and individual homeostasis.

Background. Thin study evaluated the effects of a silicone membrane on the treatment of the raw flesh area in wounds.METHODS. The experimental study was carried out with 30 male Wistar rats divided into three groups: in the G(G) group, the raw area was treated with gauze, in the G(H) group with homograft, and in the G(S) group with a silicone membrane. Animals were sacrificed at fourteen days of postoperative. The studied attributes were body mass variation, histological study quantifed by morphometric analysis evaluating the number of neovessels, fibroblasts, collagen fibers, leucocytes, monocytes; and using a micrometric ruler measurement of the raw area thickness. Data were then submitted to statistical analysis.RESULTS. There was no significant difference between the animals' mass (p=0.0685). Predominance of neovessels (p<0.01), fibroblasts (p<0.001) and thickness of the raw flesh were observed in G(S) animals. There was predominance of leucocytes (p<0.021) and monocytes (p<0.0001) in G(H) animals. Also, no significant difference between the groups as for collagen fibers (p=0.0536) was observed.CONCLUSION. The silicone membrane promoted granulation tissue with a large number of neovessels, fibroblasts and greater thickness.
