Calanus sinicus aggregate at the depth of 40-60 m (ambient temperature is 16 degreesC) in the waters of the continental shelf of the Yellow Sea during summer. in animals found in near shore regions, there are changes in digestive gut cells structure, digestive enzyme activity (protease, amylase), and tissue enzyme (alkaline phosphatase (ALP)), which may represent adaptations by this cold-water animal to a sharp seasonal increase in temperature of 6-23 degreesC. The activities of the digestive enzymes (protease and amylase) are very low in animals at stations near the estuary of Yangtse River, whereas they are relatively high in animals at stations in the central Yellow Sea, During summer, B-cells of the intestine and the villi intestinalis disappear in animals that do not feed at stations near the estuary of the Yangtse River. Respiration rates were undetectable or quite low during summer in C. sinicus from stations near the estuary of the Yangtse River, whereas they were relatively high at stations in the central Yellow Sea. Based upon the morphological characteristics of the digestive gut structure, enzyme levels, respiration rates, and the distribution of C. sinicus, we concluded that C. sinicus might be dormant during summer in the near shore areas of the East China Sea while remaining active in the central Yellow Sea. Two new species of Naticidae (Mollusca, Gastropoda) collected from the coast of China are described: Cryptonaitca huanghaiensis sp. nov. and Sinum. vittatum sp. nov. The morphological characteristics between the new species were described and the related information was provided. The similarities and differenees between the new species and related species were also compared and discussed. The new species Cryptonaitea huanghaiensis differed from Cryptonaitca hirasei and Cryptonaitca andoi in outer shape, operculum and radula. The new species Sinum, vittatum is similar to Sinum, japonicum (Lischke, 1869), but the shell of the former is flat-elliptical in shape, spire very small, slightly convex. While the latter is flat-globular in shape, apex light brown in color, without a brown band on the body whorl. The comparison results revealed that Cryptonaitca huanghaiensis and Sinum vittatum were two new species from the coast of China. Specimens studied were obtained from collections in the Marine Biological Museum, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The jinjiang oyster Crassostrea rivularis [Gould, 1861. Descriptions of Shells collected in the North Pacific Exploring Expedition under Captains Ringgold and Rodgers. Proc. Boston Soc. Nat. Hist. 8 (April) 33-40] is one of the most important and best-known oysters in China. Based on the color of its flesh, two forms of C rivularis are recognized and referred to as the "white meat" and 11 red meat" oysters. The classification of white and red forms of this species has been a subject of confusion and debate in China. To clarify the taxonomic status of the two forms of C. rivularis, we collected and analyzed oysters from five locations along China's coast using both morphological characters and DNA sequences from mitochondrial 16S rRNA and cytochrome oxidase 1, and the nuclear 28S rRNA genes. Oysters were classified as white or red forms according to their morphological characteristics and then subjected to DNA sequencing. Both morphological and DNA sequence data suggest that the red and white oysters are two separate species. Phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequences obtained in this study and existing sequences of reference species show that the red oyster is the same species as C. ariakensis Wakiya [1929. Japanese food oysters. Jpn. J. Zool. 2, 359-367.], albeit the red oysters from north and south China are genetically distinctive. The white oyster is the same species as a newly described species from Hong Kong, C. hongkongensis Lam and Morton [2003. Mitochondrial DNA and identification of a new species of Crassostrea (Bivalvia: Ostreidae) cultured for centuries in the Pearl River Delta, Hong Kong, China. Aqua. 228, 1-13]. Although the name C. rivularis has seniority over C. ariakensis and C. hongkongensis, the original description of Ostrea rivularis by Gould [1861] does not fit shell characteristics of either the red or the white oysters. We propose that the name of C. rivularis Gould [1861] should be suspended, the red oyster should take the name C. ariakensis, and the white oyster should take the name C. hongkongensis. Observation of the Miocene aeolian dust deposits in Qin'an area provide a long-timescale, almost continuous geological record for understanding significant environmental changes, such as the environmental evolution of Asian monsoons and the inland Asian aridification, and make possible new explorations of global and regional environmental evolutions and other relevant studies. However, the QA-I and QA-II sections that are previously investigated are near to each other, and there is a lack in understanding the spatial characteristics of changes in paleoenvironment. Therefore, new sections of Miocene aeolian dust deposits are needed to complete the present spatial framework. Meanwhile, it is necessary to carry out in-depth studies, which are already belated, on the depositional characteristics of these Miocene aeolian dust deposits. This thesis choose the Miziwan section and Shaogou section that are west to Liupan Mountain for magnetostratigraphic studies, results of which are compared with the QA-I section with respect to the lithology, magnetic susceptibility and paleomagnetic polarity stratigraphy. Quartz-fraction grain size of 300 samples from the QA-I section was analyzed. In addition, 30 out of these samples were determined in terms of the quartz morphological characteristics by using scanning electronic microscopy. On the basis of these data and the correlation with the Xifeng sequence of aeolian dust deposits, the following 3 conclusions are drawn as below:The upper and the lower boundary age of the Miziwan section are 11.6 Ma B.Rand 18.5 Ma B.R, respectively. The Shaogou section spans from 15.1 Ma B.P, to20.8 Ma B.R The lower boundary age of both sections is no older than that of theQA-I section. The Miziwan and the Shaogou sections can be well correlated withthe QA-I section in terms of the field lithological features, magnetic susceptibilityand magnetic polarity stratigraphy.Sedimentological evidence of the QA-I quartz grain size and quartz morphologicalcharacteristics further supports the previous conclusion that the QA-Iloess-paleosol sequence is of aeolian origin, and also verifies the accretionalfeatures in paleosols of this sequence in terms of the grain-size composition.Modifications of the grain-size composition of the original dusts due to later-stageweathering and pedogenesis are common characteristic of Miocene and Quaternary aeolian dust depositions. The above-mentioned processes further rework and refine the bulk grain size, which is more evident in paleosol layers. 3, Like the hipparion Red-Earth and the Quaternary aeolian deposits, the Miocene loess deposits are transported by near-ground winter monsoons. However, the average wind intensity evidenced by the quartz median grain size of Miocene loess, together with the maximum wind intensity by the quartz maximum grain size, is weaker than those of the Quaternary.

Earth's surface is rapidly urbanizing, resulting in dramatic changes in the abundance, distribution and character of surface water features in urban landscapes. However, the scope and consequences of surface water redistribution at broad spatial scales are not well understood. We hypothesized that urbanization would lead to convergent surface water abundance and distribution: in other words, cities will gain or lose water such that they become more similar to each other than are their surrounding natural landscapes. Using a database of more than 1 million water bodies and 1 million km of streams, we compared the surface water of 100 US cities with their surrounding undeveloped land. We evaluated differences in areal (A WB) and numeric densities (N WB) of water bodies (lakes, wetlands, and so on), the morphological characteristics of water bodies (size), and the density (D C) of surface flow channels (that is, streams and rivers). The variance of urban A WB, N WB, and D C across the 100 MSAs decreased, by 89, 25, and 71%, respectively, compared to undeveloped land. These data show that many cities are surface water poor relative to undeveloped land; however, in drier landscapes urbanization increases the occurrence of surface water. This convergence pattern strengthened with development intensity, such that high intensity urban development had an areal water body density 98% less than undeveloped lands. Urbanization appears to drive the convergence of hydrological features across the US, such that surface water distributions of cities are more similar to each other than to their surrounding landscapes. © 2014 The Author(s).

During recent cruises aboard RV Polarstern in the Antarctic Peninsula region, a new species of benthic octopodid was discovered whose generic affinities based on morphological characteristics were uncertain. Molecular sequence analysis of six mitochondrial and nuclear genes allows this species to be placed with confidence within the genus Pareledone. The species is described herein and morphological diagnostic characters are provided for its identification.

Coprolites from the Beechy Member of the Cretaceous Bearpaw Formation, southern Saskatchewan, presumably deposited by one or more species of mosasaur or large fish/shark, were recovered and analyzed using SEM/EDS. The data reveal the presence of pseudomorphous coccoid bacteria, potential filamentous bacteria, bacterial endospores and filamentous fungi. No recorded fossil plant or bone material could be identified, either within the highly compressed coprolitic mat-flattened full coprolite bolus - of recovered marine sediment encased in a mixed mat of hematite-apatite primary minerals heavily coated with Ca-smectite and nontronite, or the full coprolite bolus. The presence of fossil bacteria with morphological characteristics similar to those of endospores in other environments suggests that only robust microbial forms such as these survive diagenesis, partly with some carbon still intact, the remainder replaced with silica and iron. The data support the view that coprolites can serve as a useful source of information on the ancient microbial world. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

The opportunistic human pathogen Propionibacterium acnes is comprised of a number of distinct phylogroups, designated types IA1, IA2, IB, IC, II and III, that vary in their production of putative virulence factors, inflammatory potential, as well as biochemical, aggregative and morphological characteristics. Although Multilocus Sequence Typing (MLST) currently represents the gold standard for unambiguous phylogroup classification, and individual strain identification, it is a labour and time-consuming technique. As a consequence, we have developed a multiplex touchdown PCR assay that will, in a single reaction, confirm species identity and phylogeny of an isolate based on its pattern of reaction with six primer sets that target the 16S rRNA (all isolates), ATPase (type IA1, IA2, IC), sodA (type IA2, IB), atpD (type II) and recA (type III) housekeeping genes, as well as a Fic family toxin gene (type IC). When applied to 312 P. acnes isolates previously characterised by MLST, and representing type IA1 (n=145), IA2 (n=20), IB (n=65), IC (n=7), II (n=45) and III (n=30), the multiplex displayed 100% sensitivity and 100% specificity for the detection of isolates within each targeted phylogroup. No cross-reactivity with isolates from other bacterial species was observed. The multiplex assay will provide researchers with a rapid, high-throughput and technically undemanding typing method for epidemiological and phylogenetic investigations. It will facilitate studies investigating the association of lineages with various infections and clinical conditions, as well as a pre-screening tool to maximise the number of genetically diverse isolates selected for downstream, higher resolution sequence-based analyses.

The order Lagomorpha comprises about 90 living species, divided in 2 families: the pikas (Family Ochotonidae), and the rabbits, hares, and jackrabbits (Family Leporidae). Lagomorphs are important economically and scientifically as major human food resources, valued game species, pests of agricultural significance, model laboratory animals, and key elements in food webs. A quarter of the lagomorph species are listed as threatened. They are native to all continents except Antarctica, and occur up to 5000 m above sea level, from the equator to the Arctic, spanning a wide range of environmental conditions. The order has notable taxonomic problems presenting significant difficulties for defining a species due to broad phenotypic variation, overlap of morphological characteristics, and relatively recent speciation events. At present, only the genomes of 2 species, the European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) and American pika (Ochotona princeps) have been sequenced and assembled. Starting from a paucity of genome information, the main scientific aim of the Lagomorph Genomics Consortium (LaGomiCs), born from a cooperative initiative of the European COST Action “A Collaborative European Network on Rabbit Genome Biology—RGB-Net” and the World Lagomorph Society (WLS), is to provide an international framework for the sequencing of the genome of all extant and selected extinct lagomorphs. Sequencing the genomes of an entire order will provide a large amount of information to address biological problems not only related to lagomorphs but also to all mammals. We present current and planned sequencing programs and outline the final objective of LaGomiCs possible through broad international collaboration.

Although carob (Ceratonia siliqua L.) is of great economic importance little is still known about the pattern of genetic variation within this species. Morphological characteristics based on 31 fruit and seeds of continuous characters determinant for agro-industrial uses, were compared with RAPD and AFLP markers for assessing genetic distances in 68 accessions of carob trees, from different cultivars, varieties and eco-geographic regions of Algarve. Eighteen selected RAPD primers applied to the 68 accessions produced a total of 235 fragments ranging from 200 to 2000 bp, of which 93 (40%) were polymorphic. Four AFLP selective primer combinations generated a total of 346 amplification fragments of which 110 were polymorphic. The average level of polymorphism based on four primer combinations was 31.8%. The phenetic trees based on RAPD and AFLP analyses gave high co-phenetic correlation values, and were found to be consistent in general with the analysis of morphological data, carried out on the same accessions. A number of RAPD and AFLP markers were found to be diagnostic for ‘Canela’ cultivar and 13 wild ungrafted trees.

The incidental discovery of a solitary pulmonary nodule while performing a CT scan of the chest is a very common clinical problem. The differential diagnosis is large but the main clinical challenge is to exclude or ascertain a neoplasia. The evaluation of preexisting risk factors and the analysis of morphological characteristics of the nodule allow the clinician to solve this challenge in a significant number of cases. When the nature of the lesion remains indeterminate a careful follow-up with volumetric determination is necessary for decision making.
