Reward processing is linked to specific neuromodulatory systems with a dopaminergic contribution to reward learning and motivational drive being well established. Neuromodulatory influences on hedonic responses to actual receipt of reward, or punishment, referred to as experienced utility are less well characterized, although a link to the endogenous opioid system is suggested. Here, in a combined functional magnetic resonance imaging-psychopharmacological investigation, we used naloxone to block central opioid function while subjects performed a gambling task associated with rewards and losses of different magnitudes, in which the mean expected value was always zero. A graded influence of naloxone on reward outcome was evident in an attenuation of pleasure ratings for larger reward outcomes, an effect mirrored in attenuation of brain activity to increasing reward magnitude in rostral anterior cingulate cortex. A more striking effect was seen for losses such that under naloxone all levels of negative outcome were rated as more unpleasant. This hedonic effect was associated with enhanced activity in anterior insula and caudal anterior cingulate cortex, areas implicated in aversive processing. Our data indicate that a central opioid system contributes to both reward and loss processing in humans and directly modulates the hedonic experience of outcomes.

The present study aims at investigating the effect of a swirling mean flow and a lined annular duct on rotor trailing-edge noise. The objectives are to investigate these effects on the eigenvalues and a tailored Green's function on one hand and on the realistic case of the fan trailing-edge noise on the other hand. Indeed, the mean flow in between the rotor and the stator of the fan is highly swirling. Moreover, interstage liners are used to reduce the noise produced by the fan stage. The extension of Ffowcs-Williams & Hawkings' acoustic analogy in a medium at rest with moving surfaces, of Goldstein's acoustic analogy in a hardwall circular duct with uniform mean flow and of Rienstra & Tester's Green's function in an annular lined duct with uniform mean flow to a swirling mean flow in an annular duct with liner is introduced. First, the eigenvalues and the Green's function are investigated showing a strong effect of the swirl and of the liner. Second, a rotor trailing-edge noise model accounting for both the effects of the annular duct with lined walls and the swirling mean flow is developed and applied to a realistic fan rotor with different swirling mean flows (and as a result different associated blade stagger angles). The benchmark cases are built from the Boeing 18-inch Fan Rig Broadband Noise Test. In all cases the swirling mean flow has a strong effect on the absolute noise level. The overall liner insertion loss is little changed by the swirl in the studied cases.

This paper is concerned with modelling the effects of swirling flow on turbomachinery noise. We develop an acoustic analogy to predict sound generation in a swirling and sheared base flow in an annular duct, including the presence of moving solid surfaces to account for blade rows. In so doing we have extended a number of classical earlier results, including Ffowcs Williams & Hawkings' equation in a medium at rest with moving surfaces, and Lilley's equation for a sheared but non-swirling jet. By rearranging the Navier-Stokes equations we find a single equation, in the form of a sixth-order differential operator acting on the fluctuating pressure field on the left-hand side and a series of volume and surface source terms on the right-hand side; the form of these source terms depends strongly on the presence of swirl and radial shear. The integral form of this equation is then derived, using the Green's function tailored to the base flow in the (rigid) duct. As is often the case in duct acoustics, it is then convenient to move into temporal, axial and azimuthal Fourier space, where the Green's function is computed numerically. This formulation can then be applied to a number of turbomachinery noise sources. For definiteness here we consider the noise produced downstream when a steady distortion flow is incident on the fan from upstream, and compare our results with those obtained using a simplistic but commonly used Doppler correction method. We show that in all but the simplest case the full inclusion of swirl within an acoustic analogy, as described in this paper, is required. © 2013 Cambridge University Press.

A collection of 577 Coilia mystus was made during April 2006 and 2007 from China's Yangtze Estuary to estimate the age structure and growth patterns of the population. Examination of sectioned sagittal otoliths revealed a periodic straight/curved growth pattern. The straight zone was from April to November, and the curved zone from October to May, indicating annual periodicity. Annual periodicity was also verified by margin zone analysis. The shift from a curved-zone to the next straight-zone stanza was defined as an annulus. The fish from which the otoliths were taken were 0-5 years old. The von Bertalanffy growth function was fitted to standard length (LS)-at-age data as L-S = 215.16 (1 - e(-0.53(t+0.30))) (n = 577, r(2) = 0.81, p < 0.05). The mature females included five age classes, ages 1 and 2 accounting for 74.3% of the population. The mature males included fish aged 1 and 2, those at age 1 accounting for 86.4% of the population. Mean length was smaller, and annual growth less, for mature males than for females of comparable age. The study demonstrated that the Yangtze population of C. mystus consists of more age classes than previously thought and that the age structure of the population needs to be considered in management decisions.

The propagation of unsteady disturbances in a slowlyvarying cylindrical duct carrying mean swirling flow is investigated using a multiple-scales technique. This is applicable to turbomachinery flow behind a rotor stage when the swirl and axial velocities are of the same order. The presence of mean vorticity couples acoustic and vorticity equations which produces an eigenvalue problem that is not self-adjoint unlike that for irrotational mean flow. In order to determine the amplitude variation along the duct, an adjoint solution for the coupled system of equations is derived. The solution breaks down where a mode changes from cut on to cut off. In this region the amplitude is governed by a form of Airy's equation, and the effect of swirl is to introduce a small shift in the origin of the Airy function away from the turning-point location. The variation of axial wavenumber and amplitude along the duct is calculated. In hard-walled ducts mean swirl is shown to produce much larger amplitude variation along the duct compared with a nonswirling flow. Mean swirl also has a large effect in ducts with finite-impedance walls which differs depending on whether modes are co-rotating with the swirl or counter rotating. © 2001 by A.J. The modulation of superlattice band structure via periodic delta-doping in both well and barrier layers have been theoretically investigated, and the importance of interaction between the delta-function potentials in the well layers and those in the barrier layers on SL band structure have been revealed. It is pointed out that the energy dispersion relation Eq. (3) given in [G. Ihm, S.K. Noh, J.I. Lee, J.-S. Hwang, T.W. Kim, Phys. Rev. B 44 (1991) 6266] is an incomplete one, as the interaction between periodic delta-doping in both well and barrier layers had been overlooked. Finally, we have shown numerically that the electron states of a GaAs/Ga0.7Al0.3As superlattice can be altered more efficiently by intelligent tuning the two delta-doping's positions and heights. In this paper, the detection wavelength and the electron-hole wave function overlap of InAs/IrxGa1-xSb type II superlattice photodetectors are numerically calculated by using the envelope function and the transfer matrix methods. The band offset is dealt with by employing the model solid theory, which already takes into account the lattice mismatch between InAs and InxGa1-xSb layers. Firstly, the detection wavelength and the wave function overlap are investigated in dependence on the InAs and InxGa1-xSb layer thicknesses, the In mole fraction, and the periodic number. The results indicate that the detection wavelength increases with increasing In mole fraction, InAs and InxGa1-xSb layer thicknesses, respectively. When increasing the periodic number, the detection wavelength first increases distinctly for small periodic numbers then increases very slightly for large period numbers. Secondly, the wave function overlap diminishes with increasing InAs and InxGa1-xSb layer thicknesses, while it enhances with increasing In mole fraction. The dependence of the wave function overlap on the periodic number shows the same trend as that of the detection wavelength on the periodic number. Moreover, for a constant detection wavelength, the wave function overlap becomes greater when the thickness ratio of the InAs over InxGa1-xSb is larger.

Microphase separation of binary mixed A/B polymer brushes exposed to different solvents is studied using Single-Chain-in-Mean-Field simulations. Effects of solvent quality and selectivity, grafting density, composition, and chain-length asymmetry are systematically investigated, and diagrams of morphologies in various solvents are constructed as a function of grafting density and composition or chain-length asymmetry. The structure of the microphase segregated morphologies lacks long-range periodic order, and it is analyzed quantitatively Using Minkowski measures.

An equivalent-barotropic (EB) description of the tropospheric temperature field is derived from the geostrophic empirical mode (GEM) in the form of a scalar function Gamma(p, phi), where p is pressure and phi is 300-850-mb thickness. Baroclinic parameter phi plays the role of latitude at each longitudinal section. Compared with traditional Eulerian-mean methods, GEM defines a mean field in baroclinic streamfunction space with a time scale much longer than synoptic variability. It prompts an EB concept that is only based on a baroclinic field. Monthly GEM fields are diagnosed from NCEP-NCAR reanalysis data and account for more than 90% of the tropospheric thermal variance. The circumglobal composite of GEM fields exhibits seasonal, zonal, and hemispheric asymmetries, with larger rms errors occurring in winter and in the Northern Hemisphere (NH). Zonally asymmetric features and planetary deviation from EB are seen in the NH winter GEM. Reconstruction of synoptic sections and correlation analysis reveal that the tropospheric temperature field is EB at the leading order and has a 1-day phase lag behind barotropic variations in extratropical regions.

A fine-grid model (1/6degrees) covering the South China Sea (SCS), East China Sea and Japan/East Sea, which is embedded into a coarse-grid (3degrees) global model, was established to study the SCS circulation. In the present paper, we report the model-produced monthly and annual mean transport stream functions and sea surface heights(SSH) and their anomalies of the SCS. Comparison to the TOPEX/Poseidon data shows that the model-produced monthly sea surface height anomalies (SSHA) are in good agreement with altimeter measurements. Based on the results, the circulation of the SCS, especially the upper layer circulation, is discussed. In the surface layer, the western Philippine Sea water intrudes into the SCS through the Luzon Strait in autumn, winter and spring, but not in summer. However, as far as the whole water column is concerned, the water intrudes into the SCS through the Luzon Strait all the year round. This indicates that in summer the water still intrudes into the SCS in the subsurface and intermediate layers. The area near the northern continental slope of the SCS is dominated by a cyclonic circulation all the year round. The SCS Southern Anticyclonic Gyre, SE Vietnam Off-Shore Current in summertime and SCS Southern Cyclonic Gyre in wintertime are reproduced reasonably. The difference between the monthly averaged SSH and SSHA is significant, indicating the importance of the mean SSH in the SCS circulation.

Apostichopus japonicus is a common sea cucumber that undergoes seasonal inactivity phases and ceases feeding during the summer months. We used this sea cucumber species as a model in which to examine phenotypic plasticity of the digestive tract in response to food deprivation. We measured the body mass, gross gut morphology and digestive enzyme activities of A. japonicus before, during, and after the period of inactivity to examine the effects of food deprivation on the gut structure and function of this animal. Individuals were sampled semi-monthly from June to November (10 sampling intervals over 178 days) across temperature changes of more than 18 degrees C. On 5 September, which represented the peak of inactivity and lack of feeding, A. japonicus decreased its body mass, gut mass and gut length by 50%, 85%, and 70%, respectively, in comparison to values for these parameters preceding the inactive period. The activities of amylase, cellulase and lipase decreased by 77%, 98%, and 35% respectively, in comparison to mean values for these enzymes in June, whereas pepsin activity increased two-fold (luring the inactive phase. Alginase and trypsin activities were variable and did not change significantly across the 178-day experiment. With the exception of amylase and cellulase, all body size indices and digestive enzyme activities recovered and even surpassed the mean values preceding the inactive phase during the latter part of the experiment (October-November). Principal Component Analysis (PCA) utilizing the digestive enzyme activity and body size index data divided the physiological state of this cucumber into four phases: an active stage, prophase of inactivity peak inactivity, and a reversion phase. These phases are all consistent with previously suggested life stages for this species, but our data provide more defined characteristics of each phase. A. japonicus clearly exhibits phenotypic plasticity (or life-cycle staging) of the digestive tract during its annual inactive period. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Introduction: Stroke is a chronic condition that significantly impacts on morbidity and mortality (Balanda et al. 2010). Globally, the complexity of stroke is well documented and more recently, in Ireland, as part of the National Survey of Stroke Survivors (Horgan et al. 2014). There are a number of factors that are known to influence adaptation post stroke. However, there is a lack of research to explain the variability in how survivors adapt post stroke. Hardiness is a broad personality trait that leads to better outcome. This study investigated the influence of hardiness and physical function on psychosocial adaptation post stroke. Methods: A quantitative cross-sectional, correlational, exploratory study was conducted between April and November 2013. The sample consisted of stroke survivors (n=100) who were recruited from three hospital outpatient departments and completed a questionnaire package. Results: The mean age of participants was 76 years (range 70-80), over half (56%) of the participants achieved the maximum score of 20 on the Barthel Index indicating independence in activities of daily living. The median number of days since stroke onset was 91 days (range 74-128). The total mean score and standard deviation for hardiness was 1.89 (0.4) as measured by the Dispositional Resilience Scale, indicating medium hardiness (possible range 0-3). Psychosocial adaptation was measured using the Psychosocial Adjustment to Illness Scale, the total weighted mean and standard deviation was 0.54 (0.3) indicating a satisfactory level of psychosocial adaptation (possible range 0-3). A hierarchical multiple linear regression was performed which contained 6 independent variables (hardiness, living arrangement, and length of hospital stay, number of days since stroke onset, physical function and self-rated recovery). Findings demonstrated that physical function (p<0.001) and hardiness (p=0.008) were significantly related to psychosocial adaptation. Altogether, 65% of the variation in psychosocial adaptation can be explained by the combined effect of the independent variables. Physical functioning had the highest unique contribution (11%) to explain the variance in psychosocial adaptation while self-rated recovery, hardiness, and living arrangements contributed 3% each. Conclusion: This research provides important information regarding factors that influence psychosocial adaptation post stroke at 3 months. Physical function significantly contributed to psychosocial adaptation post stroke. The personality trait of hardiness provides insight into how behaviour influenced adaptation post stroke. While hardiness also had a strong relationship with psychosocial adaptation, further research is necessary to fully comprehend this process.

In this work we revisit the problem of the hedging of contingent claim using mean-square criterion. We prove that in incomplete market, some probability measure can be identified so that becomes -martingale under .This is in fact a new proposition on the martingale representation theorem. The new results also identify a weight function that serves to be an approximation to the Radon-Nikodým derivative of the unique neutral martingale measure.

Pigeons and other animals soon learn to wait (pause) after food delivery on periodic-food schedules before resuming the food-rewarded response. Under most conditions the steady-state duration of the average waiting time, t, is a linear function of the typical interfood interval. We describe three experiments designed to explore the limits of this process. In all experiments, t was associated with one key color and the subsequent food delay, T, with another. In the first experiment, we compared the relation between t (waiting time) and T (food delay) under two conditions: when T was held constant, and when T was an inverse function of t. The pigeons could maximize the rate of food delivery under the first condition by setting t to a consistently short value; optimal behavior under the second condition required a linear relation with unit slope between t and T. Despite this difference in optimal policy, the pigeons in both cases showed the same linear relation, with slope less than one, between t and T. This result was confirmed in a second parametric experiment that added a third condition, in which T + t was held constant. Linear waiting appears to be an obligatory rule for pigeons. In a third experiment we arranged for a multiplicative relation between t and T (positive feedback), and produced either very short or very long waiting times as predicted by a quasi-dynamic model in which waiting time is strongly determined by the just-preceding food delay.

OBJECTIVES: Although the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet lowers blood pressure in adults with hypertension, how kidney function impacts this effect is not known. We evaluated whether Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR) modifies the effect of the DASH diet on blood pressure, markers of mineral metabolism, and markers of kidney function. METHODS: Secondary analysis of the DASH-Sodium trial, a multicenter, randomized, controlled human feeding study that evaluated the blood pressure lowering effect of the DASH diet at three levels of sodium intake. Data from 92 participants with pre-hypertension or stage 1 hypertension during the 3450 mg /day sodium diet assignment contributed to this analysis. Stored frozen plasma and urine specimens were used to measure kidney related laboratory outcomes. RESULTS: Effects of the DASH diet on blood pressure, phosphorus, intact parathyroid hormone, creatinine, and albuminuria were not modified by baseline eGFR (mean 84.5 ± 18.0 ml/min/1.73 m(2), range 44.1 to 138.6 ml/min/1.73 m(2)) or the presence of chronic kidney disease (N=13%). CONCLUSIONS: The impact of the DASH diet on blood pressure, markers of mineral metabolism, and markers of kidney function does not appear to be modified by eGFR in this small subset of DASH-Sodium trial participants with relatively preserved kidney function. Whether greater reduction in eGFR modifies the effects of DASH on kidney related measures is yet to be determined. A larger study in individuals with more advanced kidney disease is needed to establish the efficacy and safety of the DASH diet in this patient population.
