Photoluminescence and Raman scattering experiments have been carried out on single crystals of C70 up to 31 GPa to investigate the effect of pressure on the optical band gap, vibrational modes and stability of the molecule. The photoluminescence band shifts to lower energies and the pressure dependence of the band maxima yields the hydrostatic deformation potential to be 2.15 eV. The slope changes in the pressure dependence of peak positions and linewidths of the Raman modes associated with the intramolecular vibrations at 1 GPa mark the known face-centred cubic-->rhombohedral orientational ordering transition. The reversible amorphization in C70 at P > 20 GPa has been compared with the irreversible amorphization in C60 at P > 22 GPa in terms of carbon-carbon distance between the neighbouring molecules at the threshold transition pressures, in conjunction with the interplay between the intermolecular and intramolecular interactions.

We investigate the structural, magnetic, and specific heat behavior of the hexagonal manganite Dy0.5Y0.5MnO3 in order to understand the effect of dilution of Dy magnetism with nonmagnetic yttrium. In this compound, the triangular Mn lattice orders antiferromagnetic at T-N(Mn) approximate to 68 K observed experimentally in the derivative of magnetic susceptibility as well as in specific heat. In addition, a low-temperature peak at T-N(Dy) similar to 3 K is observed in specific heat which is attributed to rare earth order. The T-N(Mn) increases by 9 K compared to that of hexagonal (h) DyMnO3 while T-N(Dy) is unchanged. A change in slope of thermal evolution of lattice parameters is observed to occur at temperature close to T-N(Mn). This hints at strong magnetoelastic coupling in this geometric multiferroic. In magnetization measurements, steplike features are observed when the magnetic field is applied along the c axis which shift to higher fields with temperature and vanish completely above 40 K. The presence of different magnetic phases at low temperature and strong magnetoelastic effects can lead to such field-induced transitions which resemble metamagnetic transitions. This indicates the possibility of strong field-induced effects in dielectric properties of this material, which is unexplored to date.

Co-crystals of 4,4'-bipyridine and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (1 : 2) show synthon polymorphism with the former being more stable. A 2 : 1 co-crystal is pseudopolymorphic within the same structural landscape with the structural roles of the two bipyridine N-atoms being distinct, as evidenced by mimicry by 4-phenylpyridine.

Sparingly soluble neodymium copper oxalate (NCO) single crystals were grown by gel method, by the diffusion of a mixture of neodymium nitrate and cupric nitrate into the set gel containing oxalic acid. Tabular crystal, revealing well-defined dissolution figures has been recorded. X-ray diffraction studies of the powdered sample reveal that NCO is crystalline. Infrared absorption spectrum confirmed the formation of oxalato complex with water of crystallization, while energy dispersive X-ray analysis established the presence of neodymium dominant over copper in the sample. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic studies established the presence of Nd and Cu in oxide states besides (C2O4)(2-) oxalate group. The intensities of Nd (3d(5/2)) and Cu (2p(3/2)) peaks measured in terms of maximum photoelectron count rates also revealed the presence of Nd in predominance. The inductively coupled plasma analysis supports the EDAX and XPS data by the estimation of neodymium percentage by weight to that of copper present in the NCO sample. On the basis of these findings, an empirical structure for NCO has been proposed. The implications are discussed.

Dielectric properties of potassium titanyl phosphate have been investigated as a function of thickness and frequency, as well as annealing treatment under various atmospheres. The low frequency dielectric constant of KTP crystals is shown to depend upon the sample thickness, and this feature is attributed to the existence of surface layers. The frequency-dependent dielectric response of KTP exhibits a non-Debye type relaxation, with a distribution of relaxation times. The dielectric behavior of KTP samples annealed in various atmospheres shows that the low frequency dielectric constant is influenced by the contribution from the space charge layers. Prolonged annealing of the samples leads to a surface degradation, resulting in the formation of a surface layer of lower dielectric constant. This surface degradation is least when annealed in the presence of dry oxygen. From the analysis of the dielectric data using complex electric modulus, alpha(m) has been evaluated for the virgin and annealed samples. (C) 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Studies on the low-humidity (88%) forms of tetragonal and monoclinic lysozyme, resulting from water-mediated transformations, have provided a wealth of information on the variability in protein hydration, its structural consequences and the water structure associated with proteins, in addition to facilitating the delineation of the rigid and the flexible regions in the protein molecule and the invariant features in its hydration shell. Surprisingly, monoclinic lysozyme continues to diffract even when the environmental humidity is drastically reduced, thus permitting the structural study of the enzyme at different levels of hydration. As part of a study in this direction, three very low humidity forms, two of them occuring at a nominal relative humidity of 38% and the other at 5% relative humidity, have been characterized. These have unprecedented low solvent contents of 16.9, 17.6 and 9.4%, respectively, as determined by the Matthews method.

The coexistence of quasicrystals and rational approximant structures (RAS) has been observed in melt-spun Al80Cr14Si6, Al80Mn14Si6 and Al75Mn10Cr5Si10 alloys. The presence of a b.c.c. alpha-AlMnSi phase in Al-Mn-Si and alpha-AlMnSi(Cr) phase in Al-Mn-Cr-Si has been seen. A multiple twinning around an irrational axis of the RAS has been reported in an aggregate of fine size cubic crystallites in all three alloys. Selected area diffraction patterns show that the crystalline aggregate symmetry is linked to the icosahedral point group symmetry (m35). Various ways of expressing the twin relationship in the cubic crystalline aggregates have been discussed. The thermal stability of the icosahedral phase at high temperatures reveals that the icosahedral phase in Al-Mn-Si and Al-Mn-Cr-Si alloys transforms to alpha-AlMnSi at temperatures of 690 and 670 K, respectively. In Al-Cr-Si alloy, heating to a high temperature (615 K) leads to the transformation of the icosahedral phase into a new metastable phase having an ordered cubic structure equivalent to alpha-AlMnSi. The occurrence of multiple twinning leading to icosahedral symmetry in the as-spun Al-Cr-Si alloy is presumably due to this metastable phase. Copyright (C) 1996 Acta Metallurgica Inc.

KTP crystals have been grown below and above the ferroelectric transition temperature by flux method employing both spontaneous and top-seeded solution growth techniques. A slight morphological difference has been observed in these crystals when grown below and above the T-c. Ferroelectric domains are studied in these crystals by selective domain etching. It is seen that the ferroelectric domains in crystals grown spontaneously below T, show a complicated structure. A systematic investigation of the factors influencing domain structure has been carried out. Stress to some extent has been shown to affect the domain structure. Finally, a convenient way of converting the multidomain crystals into monodomain ones is described.

NMR spectra of liquid crystalline phases and the molecules dissolved therein, spinning at and near the magic angle provide information on the director dynamics and the order parameter. The studies on the dynamics of the liquid crystal director for sample spinning near magic angle in mesophases with positive and negative diamagnetic susceptibility anisotropies (Delta chi) and their mixtures with near-zero macroscopic diamagnetic susceptibility anisotropies have been reported. In systems with weakly positive Delta chi, the director has been observed to switch from an orientation parallel to the spinning axis at low rotational speeds to one perpendicular to the spinning axis at high rotational speeds, when the angle theta, the axis of rotation makes with the magnetic field is smaller than the magic angle theta(m). For systems with a small negative Delta chi, similar director behaviour has been observed for theta greater than theta(m). At magic angle, the spectra under slow spinning speeds exhibit a centre band and side bands at integral values of the spinning speeds. The intensities of the spinning side bands have been shown to contain information on the sign and the magnitude of the order parameter(s). The results are discussed with illustrative examples. Results on the orientation of the chemical shielding tensor obtained from a combination of the NMR studies in the solid and the liquid crystalline states, have been described.

The frequency response of the dielectric constant (epsilon(r)), the loss tangent (tan delta) and impedance Z of potassium acid phthalate (KAP) single crystals, monitored along the polar axis, exhibit strong resonances in the frequency range 50-200 kHz, depending on the dimensions of the sample. The observed resonance effect, which is strongly dependent on the geometric shape and size of the sample, is attributed to its piezoelectric nature. The resonance peak positions have been monitored as a function of both temperature and uniaxial pressure. The stiffness coefficient (C), computed based on the resonance data, is found to decrease with increasing temperature and increase with increasing pressure. The electro-mechanical coupling coefficient (k), obtained by resonance-anti-resonance method, has also been found to increase with rise in temperature. The epsilon(r) behaviour along the polar axis, as a function of temperature is consistent with that of k. The preliminary results on the influence, of partial replacement of K+ ions in the KAP crystal by Cs+ and Li+ ions, on the observed piezoelectric resonance effects are also included.

An extensive search of the structural landscape of orcinol, 5-methyl-1,3-dihydroxybenzene, has been carried out with high throughput techniques. Polymorphs, pseudopolymorphs (solvates), and co-crystals are described. Several packing modes driven by O-H center dot center dot center dot N hydrogen bonds were identified for the orcinol N-base co-crystals and their hydrates. In these several structural variations, the OH group conformations in the orcinol molecule were found to depend on the choice of co-formers and the crystallization conditions employed. The structural landscape of a molecule is properly described by a sufficiently large number of related crystal structures, and high throughput crystallization followed by rapid structure determinations enables one to access these structures efficiently. Any understanding of this landscape would enable the crystal engineer to reasonably anticipate crystal structures of benzene-1,3-diol co-crystals with N-bases.

The photochromic, electrochromic and x-ray irradiation damages (commonly called the gray tracks) produced in KTiOPO4 single crystals have been studied using photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. Gray tracks were produced in this material by exposure to high laser powers (similar to MW/cm(2)), application of electric fields (similar to kV), and exposure to x rays (30 kV). The PL spectra recorded for such gray tracked samples at 4.2 K, exhibited a luminescence band in the 1-1.8 eV range with a peak at 1.41 eV. Temperature and excitation intensity dependence of PL peaks were carried out to probe the exact nature of the broad emission band in the gray tracked samples. The observed photoluminescence is attributed to transitions in the Ti3+ levels, created on irradiation. The microscopic effects produced in the crystal by electric field, optical field, and x rays are similar, as can be concluded from the similarity of PL spectra as well as their intensity and temperature dependences. Single crystals of Bi2V1-xGexO5.5-x/2 (x = 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6) were grown by slow cooling of melts. Bismuth vanadate transforms from an orthorhombic to a tetragonal structure and subsequently to an orthorhombic system when the Ge4+ concentration was varied from x = 0.2 to x = 0.6. All of these compositions crystallized in polar space groups (Aba2, F4mm, and Fmm2 for x = 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6, respectively). The structures were fully determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies, (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Radially homogeneous bulk alloys of GaxIn1-xSb in the range 0.7 < x < 0.8, have been grown by vertical Bridgman technique. The factors affecting the interface shape during the growth were optimised to achieve zero convexity. From a series of experiments, a critical ratio of the temperature gradient (G) of the furnace at the melting point of the melt composition to the ampoule lowering speed (v) was deduced for attaining the planarity of the melt-solid interface. The studies carried out on directional solidification of Ga0.77In0.23Sb mixed crystals employing planar melt-solid interface exhibited superior quality than those with nonplanar interfaces. The solutions to certain problems encountered during the synthesis and growth of the compound were discussed. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
