Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) nanocomposites with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have been prepared by a simple melt compounding method. With increasing concentration (0-3 wt %) of SWNTs, the mechanical and dynamic mechanical properties improved, corresponding to effective reinforcement. Melt rheological characterization indicated the effective entanglements provided by SWNTs in the melt state as well. Thermogravimetric analysis suggested no influence of SWNTs on the thermal stability of PET. Electrical conductivity measurements on the composite films pointed out that the melt compounded SWNTs can result in electrical percolation albeit at concentrations exceeding 2 wt %.

This Study overviews the basics of TiO2with respect to its structure, properties and applications. A brief account of its structural, electronic and optical properties is provided. Various emerging technological applications utilising TiO2 is also discussed.Till now, exceptionally large number of fundamental studies and application-oriented research and developments has been carried out by many researchers worldwide in TiO2 with its low-dimensional nanomaterial form due to its various novel properties. These nanostructured materials have shown many favourable properties for potential applications, including pollutant photocatalytic decomposition, photovoltaic cells, sensors and so on. This thesis aims to make an in-depth investigation on different linear and nonlinear optical and structural characteristics of different phases of TiO2. Correspondingly, extensive challenges to synthesise different high quality TiO2 nanostructure derivatives such as nanotubes, nanospheres, nanoflowers etc. are continuing. Here, different nanostructures of anatase TiO2 were synthesised and analysed. Morphologically different nanostructures were found to have different impact on their physical and electronic properties such as varied surface area, dissimilar quantum confinement and hence diverged suitability for different applications. In view of the advantages of TiO2, it can act as an excellent matrix for nanoparticle composite films. These composite films may lead to several advantageous functional optical characteristics. Detailed investigations of these kinds of nanocomposites were also performed, only to find that these nanocomposites showed higher adeptness than their parent material. Fine tuning of these parameters helps researchers to achieve high proficiency in their respective applications. These innumerable opportunities aims to encompass the new progress in studies related to TiO2 for an efficient utilization in photo-catalytic or photo-voltaic applications under visible light, accentuate the future trends of TiO2-research in the environment as well as energy related fields serving promising applications benefitting the mankind. The last section of the thesis discusses the applicability of analysed nanomaterials for dye sensitised solar cells followed by future suggestions.

Biocomposites with two different fillers, garlic and wheat bran, were studied. They were based on cassava starch and contained glycerol as a plasticizer and potassium sorbate as an antimicrobial agent and were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and infrared spectroscopy (IR). The mechanical performance at room and lower temperatures was also studied. SEM micrographies of fractured surfaces of the wheat bran composite films showed some ruptured particles of fiber while fibrils of garlic on the order of nanometers were observed when garlic composite films were studied. Mechanical tests, at room temperature, showed that the addition of wheat bran led to an increment in the storage modulus (E`) and hardening and a decrease in Tan delta, while the garlic composite showed a diminishing in the E` and hardening and did not produce significant changes in Tan delta values when compared with systems without fillers (matrix). In the range between -90 degrees C and 20 degrees C. all the materials studied presented two peaks in the Tan delta curve. In the case of the wheat bran composite, both relaxation peaks shifted slightly to higher temperatures, broadened and diminished their intensity when compared with those of the matrix; however garlic composite showed a similar behavior to the matrix. DSC thermograms of aqueous systems showed a slight shift of gelatinization temperature (T(gelatinization)) to higher values when the fillers were present. Thermograms of films showed that both, garlic and wheat bran composites, had a lower melting point than the matrix. IR data indicated that interaction between starch and fillers determined an increase in the availability of hydroxyl groups to be involved in a dynamic exchange with water. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. We have formed and characterized polycrystalline diamond films with surfaces having hydrogen terminations, oxygen terminations, or fluorine terminations, using a small, simple and novel plasma gun to bombard the diamond surface, formed by plasma assisted CVD in a prior step, with ions of the wanted terminating species. The potential differences between surface regions with different terminations were measured by Kelvin Force Microscopy (KFM). The highest potential occurred for oxygen termination regions and the lowest for fluorine. The potential difference between regions with oxygen terminations and hydrogen terminations was about 80 mV, and between regions with hydrogen terminations and fluorine terminations about 150 mV. Regions with different terminations were identified and imaged using the secondary electron signal provided by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). since this signal presents contrast for surfaces with different electrical properties. The wettability of the surfaces with different terminations was evaluated, measuring contact angles. The sample with oxygen termination was the most hydrophilic, with a contact angle of 75 degrees. hydrogen-terminated regions with 83 degrees, and fluorine regions 93 degrees, the most hydrophobic sample. Intermolecular associations between a cationic lipid and two model polymers were evaluated from preparation and characterization of hybrid thin films cast on silicon wafers. The novel materials were prepared by spin-coating of a chloroformic solution of lipid and polymer on silicon wafer. Polymers tested for miscibility with the cationic lipid dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODAB) were polystyrene (PS) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). The films thus obtained were characterized by ellipsometry, wettability, optical and atomic force microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and activity against Escherichia coli. Whereas intermolecular ion-dipole interactions were available for the PMMA-DODAB interacting pair producing smooth PMMA-DODAB films, the absence of such interactions for PS-DODAB films caused lipid segregation, poor film stability (detachment from the silicon wafer) and large rugosity. In addition, the well-established but still remarkable antimicrobial DODAB properties were transferred to the novel hybrid PMMA/DODAB coating, which is demonstrated to be highly effective against E. coli.

The contribution of new materials, involving composites and blends, has been reaching the most varied fields of science, as much of the scientific as technological point of view. This is due to the man's needs in applications, especially in medicine areas. Thus, this work shows the preparation and characterization of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and calcium carbonate (CaCO3) Composite films in order to analyse the incorporation of CaCO3 in PVDF for future application in bony restoration and bony filling. The films were prepared by casting method, where the PVDF pellet shape was dissolved in dimethylacetamide (DMA) and in a separate container CaCO3/DMA emulsion was also made. Soon afterwards they were mixed in several proportions 100/00, 95/05, 85/15, 70/30 in weight and left to dry in greenhouse. Homogeneous and flexible films were obtained and structurally characterized by attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR/ATR), thermal analyses (DSC, TGA), X-ray diffractometry, optical and scanning electron microscopies. The results showed that the material was a composite with good thermal stability until around 400 degrees C, the crystallinity of PVDF was non-polar alpha-phase and the obtained films were porous, being these filled with CaCO3. In the present work, a biosensor was built with smart material based on polymer brushes. The biosensor demonstrated a pH-sensitive on-off property, and it was further used to control or modulate the electrochemical responses of the biosensor. This property could be used to realize pH-controlled electrochemical reaction of hydrogen peroxide and HRP immobilized on polymer brushes. The composite film also showed excellent amperometric i-t response toward hydrogen peroxide in the concentration range of 0-13 μM. In future, this platform might be used for self-regulating targeted diagnostic, drug delivery and biofuel cell based on controllable bioelectrocatalysis. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

This work presents the preparation and characterization of PZT ceramic obtained by the polymeric precursor method (PPM). The influence of the synthesis method on the grain size and the morphology are also object of study. The fabrication and characterization of composite films with 0-3 connectivity, immersing nanoparticles of PZT into the non-polar poly(vinylidene fluoride) -PVDF as the polymer matrix were presented. For comparison there are results obtained with composite samples made of ceramic particles unrecovered and recovered with a conducting polymer, the polyaniline (PAni).

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a powerful oxidant which is commonly used in a wide range of applications in the industrial field. Several methods for the quantification of H2O2 have been developed. Among them, electrochemical methods exploit the ability of some hexacyanoferrates (such as Prussian Blue) to detect H2O2 at potentials close to 0.0 V (vs. SCE) avoiding the occurrence of secondary reactions, which are likely to run at large overpotentials. This electrocatalytic behaviour makes hexacyanoferrates excellent redox mediators. When deposited in the form of thin films on the electrode surfaces, they can be employed in the fabrication of sensors and biosensors, normally operated in solutions at pH values close to physiological ones. As hexacyanoferrates show limited stability in not strongly acidic solutions, it is necessary to improve the configuration of the modified electrodes to increase the stability of the films. In this thesis work, organic conducting polymers were used to fabricate composite films with Prussian Blue (PB) to be electro-deposited on Pt surfaces, in order to increase their pH stability. Different electrode configurations and different methods of synthesis of both components were tested, and for each one the achievement of a possible increase in the operational stability of Prussian Blue was verified. Good results were obtained for the polymer 3,3''-didodecyl-2,2':5',2''-terthiophene (poly(3,3''-DDTT)), whose presence created a favourable microenvironment for the electrodeposition of Prussian Blue. The electrochemical behaviour of the modified electrodes was studied in both aqueous and organic solutions. Poly(3,3''-DDTT) showed no response in aqueous solution in the potential range where PB is electroactive, thus in buffered aqueous solution is was possible to characterize the composite material, focusing only on the redox behaviour of PB. A combined effect of anion and cation of the supporting electrolyte was noticed. The response of Pt electrodes modified with films of the PB /poly(3,3''-DDTT) composite was evaluated for the determination of H2O2. The performance of such films was found better than that of the PB alone. It can be concluded that poly(3,3''-DDTT) plays a key role in the stabilization of Prussian Blue causing also a wider linearity range for the electrocatalytic response to H2O2.

The PSFC (Pr0.5Sr0.5Fe1-xCuxO3-δ) is a new mixed oxide perovskite and has been studied and evaluated the cathode materials for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs), mainly due to its good compatibility with the electrolyte (CGO) and its high ionic conductivity and electronic in intermediate temperature. In this work, PSFC powders with two different compositions (Pr0,5Sr0,5Fe0,8Cu0,2O3- PSFC5582 and Pr0,5Sr0,5Fe0,6Cu0,4O3-PSFC5564) were synthesized by the citrate method using a new route. The powders obtained were characterized by thermal analysis (Differential Scanning Calorimetry and Thermogravimetry), and the material calcined at 800, 900 and 1000 °C for 5h were analyzed by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), with the Rietveld refinement of the diffraction data and dilatometry. PSFC5582 composite films were obtained by screen printing of powder calcined at 1000 °C. The films were deposited on substrate ceria doped with gadolinia (CGO) and then sintered at 1050 °C for 2h. The electrochemical performance of the electrodes was evaluated by impedance spectroscopy and the interface electrode/electrolyte was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The specific resistance area (ASR) was 0.44 Ω.cm² at 800 °C, slightly lower than those reported in the literature for cathodes containing cobalt. The thermal expansion coefficients of both the PSFC compositions were obtained and varied between 13 and 15 x 10-6 °C-1 , in a temperature range of 200 to 650 °C, demonstrating the good thermal compatibility of cathodes with Ce0,9Gd0,1O1,95 electrolytes (CET = 12 x 10-6 °C).

Carbon nanotubes have unprecedented mechanical properties as defect-free nanoscale building blocks, but their potential has not been fully realized in composite materials due to weakness at the interfaces. Here we demonstrate that through load-transfer-favored three-dimensional architecture and molecular level couplings with polymer chains, true potential of CNTs can be realized in composites as Initially envisioned. Composite fibers with reticulate nanotube architectures show order of magnitude improvement in strength compared to randomly dispersed short CNT reinforced composites reported before. The molecular level couplings between nanotubes and polymer chains results in drastic differences in the properties of thermoset and thermoplastic composite fibers, which indicate that conventional macroscopic composite theory falls to explain the overall hybrid behavior at nanoscale.
