Single crystals of Guanidinium L-Ascorbate (GuLA) were grown and crystal structure was determined by direct methods. GuLA crystallizes in orthorhombic, non-centrosymmetric space group P2(1)2(1)2(1). The UV-cutoff was determined as 325 nm. The morphology was generated and the interplanar angles estimated and compared with experimental values. Second harmonic generation conversion efficiency was measured and compared with other salts of L-Ascorbic acid. Surface laser damage threshold was calculated as 11.3GW/cm(2) for a single shot of laser of 1064 nm wavelength.

The nanoindentation technique has recently been utilized for quantitative evaluation of the mechanical properties of molecular materials successfully, including their temperature (T) dependence. In this paper, we examine how the mechanical anisotropy varies with T in saccharin and L-alanine single crystals. Our results show that elastic modulus (E) decreases linearly in all the cases examined, with the T-dependence of E being anisotropic. Correspondence between directional dependence of the slopes of the E vs. T plots and the linear thermal expansion coefficients was found. The T-dependence of hardness (H), on the other hand, was found to be nonlinear and significant when (100) of saccharin and (001) of L-alanine are indented. While the anisotropies in E and H of saccharin and E of L-alanine enhance with T, the anisotropy in H of L-alanine was found to reduce with T. Possible mechanistic origins of these variations are discussed.

Cocrystallization experiments of 2-methylresorcinol with several N-bases were performed to identify selective and preferred crystallization routes in relevant structural landscapes. These preferred supramolecular synthon-based crystallization routes were further enhanced by using carefully chosen coformer combinations to synthesize stoichiometric ternary solids. The exercise consists of modular selection and amplification of supramolecular synthons from single through two-to three-component molecular solids, and is equivalent to solid state combinatorial synthesis.

Power densities required to operate active-matrix organic-light-emitting diode (AMOLED) based displays for high luminance applications, lead to temperature rise due to self heating. Temperature rise leads to significant degradation and consequent reduction in life time. In this work numerical techniques based computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is used to determine the temperature rise and its distribution for an AMOLED based display for a given power density and size. Passive cooling option in form of protruded rectangular fins is implemented to reduce the display temperature.

We derive a relationship between the initial unloading slope, contact depth, and the instantaneous relaxation modulus for displacement-controlled indentation in linear viscoelastic solids by a rigid indenter with an arbitrary axisymmetric smooth profile. While the same expression is well known for indentation in elastic and in elastic–plastic solids, we show that it is also true for indentation in linear viscoelastic solids, provided that the unloading rate is sufficiently fast. When the unloading rate is slow, a “hold” period between loading and unloading can be used to provide a correction term for the initial unloading slope equation. Finite element calculations are used to illustrate the methods of fast unloading and “hold-at-the-maximum-indenter-displacement” for determining the instantaneous modulus using spherical indenters.

An embedded cell model is presented to obtain the effective elastic moduli for three-dimensional two-phase composites which is an exact analytic formula without any simplified approximation and can be expressed in an explicit form. For the different cells such as spherical inclusions and cracks surrounded by sphere and oblate ellipsoidal matrix, the effective elastic moduli are evaluated and the results are compared with those from various micromechanics models. These results show that the present model is direct, simple and efficient to deal with three-dimensional tyro-phase composites.

This paper presents a micromechanics analysis of the elastic solids weakened by a large number of microcracks in a plane problem. A new cell model is proposed. Each cell is an ellipse subregion and contains a microcrack. The effective moduli and the stress intensity factors for an ellipse cell are obtained. The analytic closed formulas of concentration factor tensor for an isotropic matrix containing an anisotropic inclusion are derived. Based on a self-consistent method, the effective elastic moduli of the solids weakened by randomly oriented microcracks are obtained.

We report on the upconversion luminescence of a pure YVO4 single crystal excited by an infrared femtosecond laser. The luminescent spectra show that the upconversion luminescence comes from the transitions from the lowest excited states T-3(1), T-3(2) to the ground state (1)A(1) of the VO43-. The dependence of the fluorescence intensity on the pump power density of laser indicates that the conversion of infrared irradiation to visible emission is dominated by three-photon excitation process. We suggest that the simultaneous absorption of three infrared photons promotes the VO43- to excited states, which quickly cascade down to lowest excited states, and radiatively relax to ground states, resulting in the broad characteristic fluorescence of VO43-. The behaviors of six new cyclophane receptors for organic guest molecules in aqueous media are reported. These new hosts are modifications of more basic parent structures, and the main goal of their examination has been to determine how the modifications affect host selectivity for cationic guests. In particular, we have been interested in determining how additional non-covalent binding interactions can complement the cation-π interactions active in the parent systems. Three types of modifications were made to these systems. Firstly, neutral methoxy and bromine substituents were added to produce four of the six new macrocycles. Secondly, two additional aromatic rings (relative to the parent host) capable of making cation-π interactions with charged guest species were appended. Thirdly, a negatively charged carboxyl group was attached to produce a cavity in which electrostatic interactions should enhance cationic guest binding. ^1H-NMR and circular dichroic techniques were employed to determine the binding affinities of a wide variety of organic guests for the parent and modified structures in aqueous media.
Bromination of the parent host greatly enhances its binding in a general fashion, primarily as the result of hydrophobic interactions. The addition of methoxy groups does not enhance binding, apparently as a result of a collapse of the hosts into a conformation that is not suitable for binding. The appendage of extra aromatic rings enhances the binding of positively charged guests, most likely in response to more complete encapsulation of guest species. The addition of a negatively charged carboxylate enhances the binding to only selective groups of cationic guests. AM1 calculations of the electrostatic potentials of several guests molecules suggests that the enhancements seen with the modified receptor compared to the parent are most likely the result of close contact between regions of highest potential on the guest and the appended carboxylate.

The work described in this dissertation includes fundamental investigations into three surface processes, namely inorganic film growth, water-induced oxidation, and organic functionalization/passivation, on the GaP and GaAs(001) surfaces. The techniques used to carry out this work include scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Atomic structure, electronic structure, reaction mechanisms, and energetics related to these surface processes are discussed at atomic or molecular levels.
First, we investigate epitaxial Zn3P2 films grown on the Ga-rich GaAs(001)(6×6) surface. The film growth mechanism, electronic properties, and atomic structure of the Zn3P2/GaAs(001) system are discussed based on experimental and theoretical observations. We discover that a P-rich amorphous layer covers the crystalline Zn3P2 film during and after growth. We also propose more accurate picture of the GaP interfacial layer between Zn3P2 and GaAs, based on the atomic structure, chemical bonding, band diagram, and P-replacement energetics, than was previously anticipated.
Second, DFT calculations are carried out in order to understand water-induced oxidation mechanisms on the Ga-rich GaP(001)(2×4) surface. Structural and energetic information of every step in the gaseous water-induced GaP oxidation reactions are elucidated at the atomic level in great detail. We explore all reasonable ground states involved in most of the possible adsorption and decomposition pathways. We also investigate structures and energies of the transition states in the first hydrogen dissociation of a water molecule on the (2×4) surface.
Finally, adsorption structures and thermal decomposition reactions of 1-propanethiol on the Ga-rich GaP(001)(2×4) surface are investigated using high resolution STM, XPS, and DFT simulations. We elucidate adsorption locations and their associated atomic structures of a single 1-propanethiol molecule on the (2×4) surface as a function of annealing temperature. DFT calculations are carried out to optimize ground state structures and search transition states. XPS is used to investigate variations of the chemical bonding nature and coverage of the adsorbate species.

Fluorescence spectra of Nd: YVO4 under excitation of a continuous wave (CW) diode laser and a femtosecond laser at 800nm were investigated. It was found that Nd: YVO4 shows different upconversion and downconversion luminescencent behaviors when excited by the diode laser and the femtosecond laser. The dependence of the upconversion luminescence intensity on the pump power of the femtosecond laser was discussed. The populations of the upper energy levels for upconversion and downconversion luminescence were calculated based on the Bloch equations. The calculations agree well with the experimental results.
