Debido a los cambios que el Espacio Europeo de Educación Superior introduce al potenciar las horas de trabajo no presencial, se hacen necesarios nuevos mecanismos para posibilitar una mejor comunicación y cooperación en el proceso de aprendizaje. Las redes sociales, como Facebook, pueden suministrar estos mecanismos, pero su uso satisfactorio para la docencia puede verse afectado en gran medida por el estilo de aprendizaje de los alumnos. Este artículo plantea la necesidad de estudiar la influencia de los diferentes estilos de aprendizaje en la docencia no presencial mediante el uso de redes sociales con el fin de incrementar el rendimiento de los alumnos. Cabe destacar que este artículo describe el proyecto “Las redes sociales y su relación con los estilos de aprendizaje” a realizar dentro del programa de Redes de Investigación en Docencia Universitaria del Instituto de Ciencias de la Educación de la Universidad de Alicante.

Plants are necessarily complex systems that require monitoring of multiple environmental signals and, in response to those signals, coordination of differentiation and development of an extensive array of cell types at multiple locations. This coordination must rely on integration of long-distance signals that provide a means of communication among different plant parts. We propose that the relatively well-characterized classical phytohormones must act with several other long-distance signals to achieve this level of organization with dynamic yet measured responses. This is supported by observations that classical phytohormones: (i) operate in complex yet experimentally unresolved networks involving cross-talk and feedback, (ii) are generally multifunctional and nonspecific and hence must rely on other long-distance cues or pre-set conditions to achieve specificity and (iii) are likely to mask roles of other long-distance signals in several experimental contexts. We present evidence for involvement of novel long-distance signals in three developmental processes-branching, flowering and nodulation, and discuss the possible identities of novel signalling molecules.

We report high-precision inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometric (ICP-MS) compositional data for 39 trace elements in a variety of dust deposits, trapped sediments and surface samples from New Zealand and Australia. Dusts collected from the surface of alpine glaciers in the Southern Alps, New Zealand, believed to have undergone long-distance atmospheric transport from Australia, are recognizable on account of their overabundances of Pb and Cu with respect to typical upper crustal values. Long-travelled dust from Australia therefore scavenges these and other metals (e.g. Zn, Sb and Cd) from the atmosphere during transport and deposition. Hence, due to anthropogenic pollution, long-travelled Australian dusts can be recognized by elevated metal contents. The relative abundance of 25 other elements that are not affected by atmospheric pollution, mineral sorting (Zr and Hf) and weathering/solubility (alkali and earth alkali elements) reflects the geochemistry of the dust source sediment. As a result, we are able to establish the provenance of dust using ultra-trace-element chemistry at regional scale. Comparison of long-travelled dust chemistry with potential Australian sources shows that fits of variable quality are obtained. We propose that the best fitting potential source chemistry most likely represents the major dust source area. A binary mixing model is used to demonstrate that admixture of small quantities of local dust provides an even better fitting dust chemistry for the long-travelled dusts. In coliphage MS2 RNA a long-distance interaction (LDI) between an internal segment of the upstream coat gene and the start region of the replicase gene prevents initiation of replicase synthesis in the absence of coat gene translation. Elongating ribosomes break up the repressor LDI and thus activate the hidden initiation site. Expression studies on partial MS2 cDNA clones identified base pairing between 1427-1433 and 1738-1744, the so-called Min Jou (MJ) interaction, as the molecular basis for the long-range coupling mechanism. Here, we examine the biological significance of this interaction for the control of replicase gene translation. The LDI was disrupted by mutations in the 3'-side and the evolutionary adaptation was monitored upon phage passaging. Two categories of pseudorevertants emerged. The first type had restored the MJ interaction but not necessarily the native sequence. The pseudorevertants of the second type acquired a compensatory substitution some 80 nt downstream of the MJ interaction that stabilizes an adjacent LDI. In one examined case we confirmed that the second site mutations had restored coat-replicase translational coupling. Our results show the importance of translational control for fitness of the phage. They also reveal that the structure that buries the replicase start extends to structure elements bordering the MJ interaction.

Dispersion managed solitons have been discovered to have some remarkable properties which indicate an outstanding opportunity for exploitation in transmission systems. This paper will review and interpret these discoveries and discuss the potential for WDM of these solitons for both long distance systems and for the upgrade of the installed fibre base.

In this letter, we report the performance of a fiber optical parametric amplifier (OPA) when used as a source or intermediate node amplifier in a dense wavelength-division-multiplexed (DWDM) long-haul transmission testbed with 26 DWDM channels modulated at 43.7-Gb/s return-to-zero differential phase-shift keying. In both scenarios, we demonstrate similar performance to an erbium-doped fiber amplifier. This shows the OPAs compatibility with high-capacity (>1 Tb/s) long-haul communication systems.

We investigate to what extent the unique features of OPAs (large bandwidths, 0 dB noise figure, phase conjugation, signal regeneration) can be combined and exploited in future long-haul communication networks. Network PMD can complicate the use of phase-sensitive amplification.

The world is connected by a core network of long-haul optical communication systems that link countries and continents, enabling long-distance phone calls, data-center communications, and the Internet. The demands on information rates have been constantly driven up by applications such as online gaming, high-definition video, and cloud computing. All over the world, end-user connection speeds are being increased by replacing conventional digital subscriber line (DSL) and asymmetric DSL (ADSL) with fiber to the home. Clearly, the capacity of the core network must also increase proportionally. © 1991-2012 IEEE.

The optical regeneration is an attractive method to improve the performance of long-distance data transmission, though its application in high-speed fiber systems requires careful design consideration/optimization. In this letter we investigate 40 Gbit/s dispersion-managed fiber transmission with optical 2R regeneration based on quantum well saturable absorber and highly non-linear fiber. We demonstrate through numerical modeling a feasibility of a single channel transmission over 10,000 km using optimized system design. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A high resolution optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) based on an all-fiber chaotic source is demonstrated. We analyze the key factors limiting the operational range of such an OTDR, e.g., integral Rayleigh backscattering and the fiber loss, which degrade the optical signal to noise ratio at the receiver side, and then the guideline for counter-act such signal fading is discussed. The experimentally demonstrated correlation OTDR presents ability of 100km sensing range and 8.2cm spatial resolution (1.2 million resolved points), as a verification of the theoretical analysis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that correlation OTDR measurement is performed over such a long distance with such high precision.

This research develops a methodology and model formulation which suggests locations for rapid chargers to help assist infrastructure development and enable greater battery electric vehicle (BEV) usage. The model considers the likely travel patterns of BEVs and their subsequent charging demands across a large road network, where no prior candidate site information is required. Using a GIS-based methodology, polygons are constructed which represent the charging demand zones for particular routes across a real-world road network. The use of polygons allows the maximum number of charging combinations to be considered whilst limiting the input intensity needed for the model. Further polygons are added to represent deviation possibilities, meaning that placement of charge points away from the shortest path is possible, given a penalty function. A validation of the model is carried out by assessing the expected demand at current rapid charging locations and comparing to recorded empirical usage data. Results suggest that the developed model provides a good approximation to real world observations, and that for the provision of charging, location matters. The model is also implemented where no prior candidate site information is required. As such, locations are chosen based on the weighted overlay between several different routes where BEV journeys may be expected. In doing so many locations, or types of locations, could be compared against one another and then analysed in relation to siting practicalities, such as cost, land permission and infrastructure availability. Results show that efficient facility location, given numerous siting possibilities across a large road network can be achieved. Slight improvements to the standard greedy adding technique are made by adding combination weightings which aim to reward important long distance routes that require more than one charge to complete.

The Cutri Formation’s, type location, exposed in the NW of Mallorca, Spain has previously been described by Álvaro et al., (1989) and further interpreted by Abbots (1989) unpublished PhD thesis as a base-of-slope carbonate apron. Incorporating new field and laboratory analysis this paper enhances this interpretation. From this analysis, it can be shown without reasonable doubt that the Cutri Formation was deposited in a carbonate base-of-slope environment on the palaeowindward side of a Mid-Jurassic Tethyan platform. Key evidence such as laterally extensive exposures, abundant deposits of calciturbidtes and debris flows amongst hemipelagic deposits strongly support this interpretation.

International migration sets in motion a range of significant transnational processes that connect countries and people. How migration interacts with development and how policies might promote and enhance such interactions have, since the turn of the millennium, gained attention on the international agenda. The recognition that transnational practices connect migrants and their families across sending and receiving societies forms part of this debate. The ways in which policy debate employs and understands transnational family ties nevertheless remain underexplored. This article sets out to discern the understandings of the family in two (often intermingled) debates concerned with transnational interactions: The largely state and policydriven discourse on the potential benefits of migration on economic development, and the largely academic transnational family literature focusing on issues of care and the micro-politics of gender and generation. Emphasizing the relation between diverse migration-development dynamics and specific family positions, we ask whether an analytical point of departure in respective transnational motherhood, fatherhood or childhood is linked to emphasizing certain outcomes. We conclude by sketching important strands of inclusions and exclusions of family matters in policy discourse and suggest ways to better integrate a transnational family perspective in global migration-development policy.
