The presence of three FUT3 gene single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (59T > G; 508G > A and 1067T > A) was related to the Lewis phenotype of erythrocytes from 185 individuals of Japanese ancestry living in the town of Tomé-Açu in the Brazilian Amazon region. This relationship was detected using a serological hemagglutination test and the Dot-ELISA assay along with the molecular technique PCR-RFLP. We found that the three SNPs investigated in this study only accounted for a proportion of the Lewis-negative phenotype of the erythrocytes.

Estoque e ciclagem de carbono de sistemas agroflorestais em Tomé-Açu, Amazônia Oriental

Sistemas agroflorestais (SAFs) consistem em importante prática agrícola de uso da terra voltada a produção e a prestação de serviços ambientais. O objetivo deste trabalho consistiu em realizar um estudo do estoque e ciclagem de carbono de 4 sistemas agroflorestais (SAFs) com idades e composições diferentes, além de uma vegetação secundária (capoeira), no município de Tomé-Açu, na região nordeste do Estado do Pará, Amazônia Oriental. Foram medidos os estoques de carbono no solo, na serrapilheira e na biomassa da parte aérea. O fluxo de carbono foi medido na deposição de material formador de serrapilheira e incremento da biomassa aérea no período de um ano, entre outubro de 2008 e setembro de 2009. Os SAFs foram divididos em quatro categorias, denominados SAF 1, SAF 2, SAF 3 e SAF 4, sendo (SAF 1: cacau, açaí, bananeira e seringueira, 14 anos de idade, SAF 2: cacau, açaí, bananeira, seringueira, taperebá, paricá e macacaúba, 14 anos de idade, SAF 3: cupuaçu, açaí, teca e mogno, 9 anos de idade, SAF 4:cupuaçu, açaí e paricá, 9 anos de idade). Em cada sistema, foram instaladas 4 parcelas amostrais, onde foram coletados os dados de diâmetro a altura do peito (DAP) e altura (h), usados posteriormente para estimar a biomassa da parte aérea. Dentro das parcelas foram instalados coletores para medir a deposição de material formador de serrapilheira e realizadas coletas de solo e serrapilheira utilizadas na estimativa dos estoques de carbono. Não houve diferença significativa entre os SAFs analisados para a variável estoque de carbono no solo, assim como não houve diferença no estoque de carbono na biomassa da parte aérea. O SAF 4 teve a maior deposição de serrapilheira anual entre todos os tratamentos. Os SAFs não diferiram da capoeira quanto ao estoque de carbono no solo e serrapilheira. A produtividade primária líquida atingiu 2,54, 6,11, 9,54 e 16,27 Mg C ha^-1 ano^-1 nos SAFs 1, 2, 3 e 4, respectivamente. A idade dos SAFs não teve efeito significativo na quantidade de carbono acumulada no período de um ano.

Methodologically, we have used a multidisciplinary bibliography that contemplates cultural geography, history, music, linguistics, literature, anthropology, for we understand that, for the understanding of a polysemous code, as it is in music, we need a diversity of looks. Our main document for an analysis of the construction of Brasília is the “Sinfonia da Alvorada” (Symphony of the Dawn), composed by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes. Here, we attempt mainly to do a textual analysis of the work under an external perspective of the symphonic work, we mean, analyzing more its semantics (considering the product between interlocution and interpretation), and less its instrumental aesthetics, although the latter is also present. Finally, we attempt to understand the connection that exists between the actors and the spaces which are metamorphosing along with the construction of the city and which puts into evidence the idea of social circularity, proposed by the “Sinfonia da Alvorada”. This piece captures social and cultural elements related to the construction of Brasília and repositions and rearranges it through the execution of the music, in such a way that this arrangement can provide a change in the senses which are constructed from the urban experience in Brasília.

The Tomato (Solanum Lycopersicum cv. Micro-Tom) Natural Genetic Variation Rg1 and the DELLA Mutant Procera Control the Competence Necessary to Form Adventitious Roots and Shoots

Despite the wide use of plant regeneration for biotechnological purposes, the signals that allow cells to become competent to assume different fates remain largely unknown. Here, it is demonstrated that the Regeneration1 (Rg1) allele, a natural genetic variation from the tomato wild relative Solanum peruvianum, increases the capacity to form both roots and shoots in vitro; and that the gibberellin constitutive mutant procera (pro) presented the opposite phenotype, reducing organogenesis on either root-inducing medium (RIM) or shoot-inducing medium (SIM). Mutants showing alterations in the formation of specific organs in vitro were the auxin low-sensitivity diageotropica (dgt), the lateral suppresser (ls), and the KNOX-overexpressing Mouse ears (Me). dgt failed to form roots on RIM, Me increased shoot formation on SIM, and the high capacity for in vitro shoot formation of ls contrasted with its recalcitrance to form axillary meristems. Interestingly, Rg1 rescued the in vitro organ formation capacity in proRg1 and dgtRg1 double mutants and the ex vitro low lateral shoot formation in pro and ls. Such epistatic interactions were also confirmed in gene expression and histological analyses conducted in the single and double mutants. Although Me phenocopied the high shoot formation of Rg1 on SIM, it failed to increase rooting on RIM and to rescue the non-branching phenotype of ls. Taken together, these results suggest REGENERATION1 and the DELLA mutant PROCERA as controlling a common competence to assume distinct cell fates, rather than the specific induction of adventitious roots or shoots, which is controlled by DIAGEOTROPICA and MOUSE EARS, respectively.

Executive Reorganization: Building a State Government That Worked for People -- Tom Harrison, Diana Dowling & Sheena Wilson “In the Crucible of Change”

One of the primary accomplishments of Governor Forrest Anderson in 1969-71 was the reorganization of the Executive Branch of Montana government, something that had been attempted six different times between 1919 and 1962 as state government had grown from twenty agencies to almost 200 uncontrolled boards, bureaus and commissions. The chaotic structure of the executive branch disempowered governors of both parties and empowered the private corporations and organizations that were the power structure of Montana. With remarkable political acumen, Governor Anderson figured out how to get that near impossible job done. Central to his efforts was the creation of an Executive Reorganization Commission, including eight legislators and the Governor, the adoption of a Constitutional Amendment that limited the executive branch to no more than twenty departments under the Governor, and the timely completion of a massive research effort to delineate the actual structure of the twenty departments. That story is told in this episode by three major players in the effort, all involved directly with the Executive Reorganization Commission: Tom Harrison, Diana Dowling and Sheena Wilson. Their recollections reflect an insider’s perspective of this significant accomplishment that helped change Montana “In the Crucible of Change.” Tom Harrison is a former Republican State Representative and State Senator from Helena, who was a member of the Executive Reorganization Commission. As Majority Leader in the Montana House of Representatives in 1971, he was the primary sponsor of the House’s executive reorganization bill and helped shepherd the Senate’s version to passage. Harrison was the Republican candidate for Attorney General in 1976 after which he practiced private law for 3 more decades. He served in the Montana Army National Guard for almost 34 years, rising to the rank of Colonel in the position of Judge Advocate General. He was a founding Director of Federal Defenders of Montana (legal representation for indigents accused within the Federal Judicial System); appointed Chairman of the original Montana State Fund (workers' compensation insurance) by Gov. Stephens; served as President of the Montana Trial Lawyers Association, Helena Kiwanis Club and St. Peter's Community Hospital Foundation, as well as Chairman and Director of AAA MountainWest; and was a founder, first Chairman and Director of the Valley Bank of Helena for over 25 years. Diana Dowling was an attorney for the Executive Reorganization Commission and helped draft the legislation that was passed. She also worked for Governor Forrest Anderson and for the 1972 Constitutional Convention where she prepared and directed publication of official explanation of the new Constitution that was mailed to all Montana voters. Diana was Executive Director of the Montana Bar Association and for 20 years held various legal positions with the Montana Legislative Council. For 12 years she was a commissioner on the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws and for 7 years was a member of Montana State Board of Bar Examiners. Diana was the first director of the Montana Lottery, an adjunct professor at both Carroll College and the UM Law School, and an administrative officer for Falcon Press Publishing Co. Diana is currently - and intends to continue being - a perpetual college student. Sheena Wilson came fresh out of the University of Montana to become a Research Assistant for the Executive Reorganization Commission. Later she worked for seven years as a field representative in Idaho and Montana for the Mountain Plains Family Education Program, for thirteen years with Congressman Pat Williams as Executive Assistant in Washington and Field Assistant here in Montana, owned and managed a Helena restaurant for seven years, worked as Executive Assistant for State Auditor John Morrison and was Deputy Chief of Staff for Governor Brian Schweitzer his full 8 years in the Governorship. Though currently “retired”, Sheena serves on the Montana Board of Investments, the Public Employees Retirement Board and the Capitol Complex Advisory Council and is a partner in a dry-land wheat farm in Teton County that was homesteaded by her great uncle.
