Background: Solobacterium moorei is a volatile sulfide compound (VSC)-producing Gram-positive anaerobic bacterium that has been associated with halitosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of green tea extract and its major constituent epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) on growth and severalhalitosis-related properties of S. moorei.Methods: A microplate dilution assay was used to determine the antibacterial activity of green tea extract and EGCG against S. moorei. Their effects on bacterial cell membrane integrity were investigated by transmission electron microscopy and a fluorescence-based permeability assay. Biofilm formation was quantified by crystal violet staining. Adhesion of FITC-labeled S. moorei to oral epithelial cells was monitored by fluorometry. The modulation of beta-galactosidase gene expression in S. moorei was evaluated by quantitative RT-PCR.Results: The green tea extract as well as EGCG inhibited the growth of S. moorei, with MIC values of 500 and 250 mu g/ml, respectively. Transmission electron microscopy analysis and a permeabilization assay brought evidence that the bacterial cell membrane was the target of green tea polyphenols. Regarding the effects of green tea polyphenols on the S. moorei colonization properties, it was found that biofilm formation on EGCG-treated surfaces was significantly affected, and that green tea extract and EGCG can cause the eradication of pre-formed S. moorei biofilms. Moreover, both the green tea extract and EGCG were found to reduce the adherence of S. moorei to oral epithelial cells. The beta-galactosidase activity of S. moorei, which plays a key role in VSC production, was dose-dependently inhibited by green tea polyphenols. In addition, EGCG at 1/2 MIC significantly decreased the beta-galactosidase gene expression.Conclusion: Our study brought evidence to support that green tea polyphenols possess a number of properties that may contribute to reduce S. moorei-related halitosis. Therefore, these natural compounds may be of interest to be used to supplement oral healthcare products.

The exercise-induced collapse (EIC) is a hereditary disease characterized by muscle weakness, impaired locomotion and collapse after intense exercise. This autossomic recessive disorder affects mainly Labrador Retriever presenting the mutation c.767G>T in the dynamin 1 (DNM1) gene. The objective of this study is to report the first case of exercise-induced collapse in Labrador Retriever in Brazil. The molecular test detected the specific genetic mutation and confirmed the clinical diagnosis in a Labrador Retriever with clinical history of weakness and collapse after exercise. It is important to include this disease as part of the differential diagnosis of neuromuscular diseases in Labrador Retriever and use the molecular test to guide matings.

Purpose: Ti-Ta alloys have high potential for dental application due to a good balance between high strength and low modulus. Absence of primary anchoring may occur when dental implants are installed immediately after tooth extraction. Tranexamic acid (TEA) is used to reduce fibrin degradation and can prevent early blood clot breakdown. The aim of this study was to evaluate the biocompatibility of Ti-30Ta implants associated or not with tranexamic acid and installed with compromised primary stability. Methods and materials: Fabricated were 20 implants of titanium ASTM F67 (Grade 4) and 20 implants of Ti-30Ta alloy with dimensions of 2.1 mm × 2.8 mm Ø. They were divided (n = 10) into Group I (Ti machined), Group II (Ti machined/tranexamic acid), Group III (Ti-30Ta alloy) and Group IV (Ti-30Ta/tranexamic acid) and were implanted in tibia (defects with 2.5 mm × 3.2 mm Ø) of 40 male rats (250 g). The surgical sites were rinsed with 5% tranexamic acid solution in Groups II and IV. The animals were euthanized at 45 days postoperative. The pieces were processed in methyl methacrylate (Stevenel's blue/Alizarin red). The percentage of peri-implant tissue repair was analyzed via images obtained by an optical microscope coupled to a digital camera using Leica software and Adobe Photoshop QWin. Data were analyzed statistically with a significance level of 5%. Results: Histomorphometric results showed 97.16% of bone-implant contact for group IV, 89.78% of bone contact for group III, 70.89% for group II and 61.59% of bone contact for group I. The statistical analyses demonstrated significant differences (P < 0.05) among group I and other groups. Conclusion: The results suggest that (a) Ti-30Ta promoted an increase of bone healing and apposition around implant; (b) tranexamic acid favored the stabilization of blood clot and bone formation.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the gamma radiation effects on odor volatiles in oolong tea at doses of 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 kGy. The volatile organic compounds were extracted by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC/MS. The irradiation has a large influence on oolong tea odor profile, once it was identified 40% of new compounds after this process, the 5 kGy and 20 kGy were the doses that degraded more volatiles found naturally in this kind of tea and the dose of 10 kGy was the dose that formed more new compounds. Statistical difference was found between the 5 kGy and 15 kGy volatile profiles, however the sensorial analysis showed that the irradiation at dose up 20 kGy did not interfere on consumer perception. We assess the evidence for health benefits of three commonly consumed plant food supplements (PFS), green tea, isoflavone and aloe vera, based on published systematic reviews of randomised controlled trials (RCTs). Whilst the potential benefits of green tea have been reported in a wide range of health areas, it is only in the area of the metabolic syndrome that the number of RCTs is approaching sufficient to judge such efficacy. Isoflavone supplements are widely used, and RCTs indicate that they affect bone resorption at lower doses in postmenopausal women undergoing estrogen-related bone loss, but this is only translated to attenuation of bone loss at higher doses of isoflavones A systematic review on RCTs concluded that the effects of isoflavones

Die Ränder des Labrador Meeres wurden während des späten Neoproterozoikums intensiv von karbonatreichen silikatischen Schmelzen durchsetzt. Diese Schmelzen bildeted sich bei Drucken zwischen ca. 4-6 GPa (ca. 120-180 km Tiefe) an der Basis der kontinentalen Mantel-Lithosphäre. Diese Magmengenerierung steht in zeitlichem und räumlichem Zusammenhang mit kontinentalen Extensionsprozessen, welche zu beiden Seiten des sich öffnenden Iapetus-Ozeans auftraten.
