We have studied the response of a sol-gel based TiO(2), high k dielectric field effect transistor structure to microwave radiation. Under fixed bias conditions the transistor shows frequency dependent current fluctuations when exposed to continuous wave microwave radiation. Some of these fluctuations take the form of high Q resonances. The time dependent characteristics of these responses were studied by modulating the microwaves with a pulse signal. The measurements show that there is a shift in the centre frequency of these high Q resonances when the pulse time is varied. The measured lifetime of these resonances is high enough to be useful for non-classical information processing.

A combined experimental and numerical study of a transonic shock wave in a parallel walled duct subject to downstream pressure perturbations has been conducted. Experiments and simulations have been carried out with a shock strength of M∞ = 1.4 for pressure perturbation frequencies in the range 16-90 Hz. The dynamics of unsteady shock motion and the interaction structure between the unsteady transonic shock wave and the turbulent tunnel floor boundary layer have been investigated. It is found that the (experimentally measured) dynamics of shock motion are generally well predicted by the computational scheme, especially at relatively low (≈ 40 Hz) frequencies. However, at higher frequencies (≈ 90 Hz), some subtle differences between the shock dynamics measured in experiments and those predicted by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) exist. There is evidence from experiments that variations in shock / boundary layer interaction (SBLI) structure caused by shock motion are responsible for a change in the nature of shock dynamics between low and high frequency. In contrast, numerical results at low and high frequencies do not differ significantly and this suggests that the numerical method is not fully capturing the physics of the unsteady flow. Possible reasons for this are considered and a number of areas where CFD is unable to replicate experimental observations are identified. Significantly, CFD predicts changes in SBLI structure due to shock motion that are much too large and this may explain why none of the subtle effects on shock dynamics seen in experiments occur in CFD. Further work developing numerical methods that demonstrate a more realistic sensitivity of SBLI structure to unsteady shock motion is required. Copyright © 2010 by P.J.K. Bruce.

The use of microbial induced precipitation as a soil improvement technique has been growing in geotechnical domains where ureolytic bacteria that raise the pH of the system and induce calcium carbonate (CaCO3) precipitation are used. For many applications, it is useful to assess the degree of CaCO 3 precipitation by non-destructive testing. This study investigates the feasibility of S-wave velocity measurements to evaluate the amount of calcite precipitation by laboratory testing. Two sets of cemented specimen were tested. The first were samples terminated at different stages of cementation. The second were samples that went through different chemical treatments. These variations were made to find out if these factors would affect the S-wave velocity- cementation relationship. If chemical reaction efficiency was assumed to be constant throughout each test, the relationship between S-wave velocity (Vs) and the amount of CaCO3 precipitation was found to be approximately linear. This correlation between S-wave velocity and calcium carbonate precipitation validates its use as an indicator of the amount of calcite precipitation © 2011 ASCE.

The threshold current densities and voltage tensions (body voltages) between the head and tail for bringing about distinct reactions in Salmo irideus, Cyprinus Carpio, Tinea tinca, Gasterosteus aculeatus and Salmo fario were studied. In C. carpio and T. tinca, absolute current densities required decreased with increase in length of fish. Threshold current densities for different reactions of fish increased with rise in water temperature and conductivity of surrounding medium except in case of T. tinca where low current densities were sufficient in higher conductivity of water. Impulse D.C. was superior to continuous D.C. Better effect was noticed in fishes in lower current densities when their bodies were parallel to the lines of current conduction.

It is known theoretically [1-3] that infinitely long fluid loaded plates in mean flow exhibit a range of unusual phenomena in the 'long time' limit. These include convective instability, absolute instability and negative energy waves which are destabilized by dissipation. However, structures are necessarily of finite length and may have discontinuities. Moreover, linear instability waves can only grow over a limited number of cycles before non-linear effects become dominant. We have undertaken an analytical and computational study to investigate the response of finite, discontinuous plates to ascertain if these unusual effects might be realized in practice. Analytically, we take a "wave scattering" [2,4] - as opposed to a "modal superposition" [5] - view of the fluttering plate problem. First, we solve for the scattering coefficients of localized plate discontinuities and identify a range of parameter space, well outside the convective instability regime, where over-scattering or amplified reflection/transmission occurs. These are scattering processes that draw energy from the mean flow into the plate. Next, we use the Wiener-Hopf technique to solve for the scattering coefficients from the leading and trailing edges of a baffled plate. Finally, we construct the response of a finite, baffled plate by a superposition of infinite plate propagating waves continuously scattering off the plate ends and solve for the unstable resonance frequencies and temporal growth rates for long plates. We present a comparison between our computational results and the infinite plate theory. In particular, the resonance response of a moderately sized plate is shown to be in excellent agreement with our long plate analytical predictions. Copyright © 2010 by ASME.

This paper looks at active control of the normal shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interaction (SBLI) using smart flap actuators. The actuators are manufactured by bonding piezoelectric material to an inert substrate to control the bleed/suction rate through a plenum chamber. The cavity provides communication of signals across the shock, allowing rapid thickening of the boundary layer approaching the shock, which splits into a series of weaker shocks forming a lambda shock foot, reducing wave drag. Active control allows optimum control of the interaction, as it would be capable of positioning the control region around the original shock position and control the rate of mass transfer. © 2004 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. We designed a two-dimensional coupled photonic crystal resonator array with hexagonal lattice. The calculation by plane-wave-expansion method shows that the dispersion curve of coupled cavity modes in the bandgap are much flattened in all directions in the reciprocal space. We simulated the transmission spectra of transverse electric (TE) wave along the Gamma K direction. Compared with the PC single cavity structure, the transmission ratio of the coupled cavity array increases more than three orders of magnitude, while the group velocity decreases to below 1/10, reaching 0.007c. The slow wave effect has potential application in the field of miniaturized tunable optical delay components and low-threshold photonic crystal lasers.

Quasi-continuous-wave operation of AlGaAs/GaAs-based quantum cascade lasers (lambda similar to 9 mu m) up to 165 K is reported. The strong temperature dependence of the threshold current density and its higher value in high duty cycle is investigated in detail. The self-heating effect in the active region is explored by changing the operating duty cycles. The degradation of lasing performance with temperature is explained. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Equilateral-triangle-resonator (ETR) microlasers with an output waveguide connected to one of the vertices of the ETR are suitable to be a light source for photonic integrated circuits. InP-GaInAsP ETR lasers with side length from 10 to 30 pm and the output-waveguide width of 1 or 2 pm are fabricated using standard photolithography and inductively coupled-plasma etching techniques. Continuous-wave electrically injected 1520-nm ETR laser with 20-mu m sides is realized with the maximum output power 0.17 and 0.067 mW and the threshold current 34 and 43 mA at 290 K and 295 K, respectively.

The origin of spurious solutions in the eight-band envelope function model is examined and it is shown that spurious solutions arise from the additional spurious degeneracies caused by the unphysical bowing of the conduction bands calculated within the eight-band k center dot p model. We propose two approaches to eliminate these spurious solutions. Using the first approach, the wave vector cutoff method, we demonstrate the origin and elimination of spurious solutions in a transparent way without modifying the original Hamiltonian. Through the second approach, we introduce some freedom in modifying the Hamiltonian. The comparison between the results from the various modified Hamiltonians suggests that the wave vector cutoff method can give accurate enough description to the final results.

The reduction of exciton binding energy induced by a perpendicular electric field in a stepped quantum well is studied. From continuous-wave photoluminescence spectra at 77 K we have observed an obvious blueshift of the exciton peak due to a spatially direct-to-indirect transition of excitons. A simple method is used to calculate the exciton binding energy while the inhomogeneous broadening is taken into account in a simple manner. The calculated result reproduces remarkably well the experimental observation.

DFB lasers with continuously and arbitrarily chirped gratings of ultrahigh spatial precision are implemented by a method we proposed recently, using bent waveguides on homogeneous grating fields. Choosing individual bending functions we generate special chirping functions and obtain additional degrees of freedom to tailor and improve specific device performances, We present two applications for lasers showing several improved device properties and the effectiveness of our method, First, we implement continuously distributed phase-shifted lasers, revealing a considerably reduced photon pile-up, higher single-longitudinal mode stability, higher output power, lower linewidth, and higher yield than conventional abruptly phase-shifted lasers, Second, a novel tuning principle is applied in chirped multiple-section DFB lasers, showing 5.5-nm wavelength tuning, without any gaps, maintaining high side-mode suppression.
