This paper discusses the application of hybrid model predictive control to control switching between different burner modes in a novel compact marine boiler design. A further purpose of the present work is to point out problems with finite horizon model predictive control applied to systems for which the optimal solution is a limit cycle. Regarding the marine boiler control the aim is to find an optimal control strategy which minimizes a trade-off between deviations in boiler pressure and water level from their respective setpoints while limiting burner switches. The approach taken is based on the Mixed Logic Dynamical framework. The whole boiler systems is modelled in this framework and a model predictive controller is designed. However to facilitate on-line implementation only a small part of the search tree in the mixed integer optimization is evaluated to find out whether a switch should occur or not. The strategy is verified on a simulation model of the compact marine boiler for control of low/high burner load switches. It is shown that even though performance is adequate for some disturbance levels it becomes deteriorated when the optimal solution is a limit cycle. Model Predictive Control (MPC) is increasingly being proposed for application to miniaturized devices, fast and/or embedded systems. A major obstacle to this is its computation time requirement. Continuing our previous studies of implementing constrained MPC on Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA), this paper begins to exploit the possibilities of parallel computation, with the aim of speeding up the MPC implementation. Simulation studies on a realistic example show that it is possible to implement constrained MPC on an FPGA chip with a 25MHz clock and achieve MPC implementation rates comparable to those achievable on a Pentium 3.0 GHz PC. This paper presents the production and testing of an ortho-planar one-way micro-valve. The main advantages of such valves are that they are very compact and can be made from a single flat piece of material. A previous paper presents and discusses a micro-valve assembly based on a spider spring. The present paper focuses on the valve assembly process and the valve performance.. Several prototypes with a bore of 0.2 mm have been built using two manufacturing techniques (μEDM and stereo-lithography) and tested for pressures up to 7 bars. © 2008 International Federation for Information Processing.

The main difficulties encountered in the development of microscale fluidic pumping systems stem from the fact that these systems tend to comprise highly three-dimensional parts, which are incompatible with traditional microproduction technologies. Regardless of the type of pumping principle, most of the hydraulic systems contain valves and in particular a one-way valve. This paper presents the design and modelling of an ortho-planar one-way microvalve. The main advantages of such a valve are that it is very compact and can be made from a single flat piece of material. An analytical model of the spring deflection has been developed and compared to FEM. A prototype with a bore of 1.5 mm has been build using a micro EDM (electro discharge machining) machine and also tested. © 2006 International Federation for Information Processing.

A full-length Cks1 homologue gene, AmphiCks1, was identified in amphioxus, Branchiostoma belcheri tsingtauense. Sequence characteristics, phylogeny and patterns of expression during embryonic and larval development were established. The protein predicted from AmphiCks1 showed high sequence identity with vertebrate and invertebrate homologues. Protein structural studies and phylogenetic analysis suggested that Cks homologues are evolutionarily conserved. The AmphiCks1 transcript was detected in most early developmental stages by northern blotting and whole-mount in situ hybridization, suggesting a role for the gene in cell division. The paper considers an on-line single machine scheduling problem where the goal is to minimize the makespan. The jobs are partitioned into families and a setup is performed every time the machine starts processing a batch of jobs of the same family. The scheduler is aware of the number of families and knows the setup time of each family, although information about a job only becomes available when that job is released. We give a lower bound on the competitive ratio of any on-line algorithm. Moreover, for the case of two families, we provide an algorithm with a competitive ratio that achieves this lower bound. As the number of families increases, the lower bound approaches 2, and we give a simple algorithm with a competitive ratio of 2.
