This paper presents a neural network based technique for the classification of segments of road images into cracks and normal images. The density and histogram features are extracted. The features are passed to a neural network for the classification of images into images with and without cracks. Once images are classified into cracks and non-cracks, they are passed to another neural network for the classification of a crack type after segmentation. Some experiments were conducted and promising results were obtained. The selected results and a comparative analysis are included in this paper.

Rotational degrees of freedom in Cosserat continua give rise to higher fracture modes. Three new fracture modes correspond to the cracks that are surfaces of discontinuities in the corresponding components of independent Cosserat rotations. We develop a generalisation of J- integral that includes these additional degrees of freedom. The obtained path-independent integrals are used to develop a criterion of crack propagation for a special type of failure in layered materials with sliding layers. This fracture propagates as a progressive bending failure of layers – a “bending crack that is, a crack that can be represented as a distribution of discontinuities in the layer bending. This situation is analysed using a 2D Cosserat continuum model. Semi-infinite bending crack normal to layering is considered. The moment stress concentrates along the line that is a continuation of the crack and has a singularity of the power − 1/4. A model of process zone is proposed for the case when the breakage of layers in the process of bending crack propagation is caused by a crack (microcrack in our description) growing across the layer adjacent to the crack tip. This growth is unstable (in the moment-controlled loading), which results in a typical descending branch of moment stress – rotation discontinuity relationship and hence in emergence of a Barenblatt-type process zone at the tip of the bending crack.

The objective of the work described was to identify and synthesize a range of biodegradable hypercoiling or hydrophobically associating polymers to mimic natural apoproteins, such as those found in lung surfactant or plasma apolipoproteins. Stirred interfacial polymerization was used to synthesize potentially biodegradable aromatic polyamides (Mw of 12,000-26,000) based on L-Iysine, L-Iysine ethyl ester, L-ornithine and DL-diaminopropionic acid, by reaction with isophthaloyl chloride. A similar technique was used to synthesize aliphatic polyamides based on L-Iysine ethyl ester and either adipoyl chloride or glutaryl chloride resulting in the synthesis of poly(lysine ethyl ester adipamide) [PLETESA] or poly(lysine ethyl ester glutaramide) (Mw of 126,000 and 26,000, respectively). PLETESA was found to be soluble in both polar and non-polar solvents and the hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance could be modified by partial saponification (66-75%) of the ethyl ester side chains. Surface or interfacial tension/pH profiles were used to assess the conformation of both the poly(isophthalamides) and partially saponified PLETESA in aqueous solution. The results demonstrated that a loss of charge from the polymer was accompanied by an initial fall in surface activity, followed by a rise in activity, and ultimately, by polymer precipitation. These observations were explained by a collapse of the polymer chains into non-surface active intramolecular coils, followed by a transition to an amphipathic conformation, and finally to a collapsed hydrophobe. 2-Dimensional NMR analysis of polymer conformation in polar and non-polar solvents revealed intramolecular associations between the hydrophobic groups within partially saponified PLETESA. Unsaponified PLETESA appeared to form a coiled structure in polar solvents where the ethyl ester side chains were contained within the polymer coil. The implications of the secondary structure of PLETESA and potential biomedical applications are discussed.

This chapter deals initially with the underlying principles of adhesion and adhesives and the understanding of interfacial behaviour. This provides a basis upon which to understand biological interactions (. Chapter 12). The two broad types of adhesive materials encountered in wound healing are pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSA) and tissue sealants. The function of pressure-sensitive adhesives is to form an adhesive bond between tissue and biomaterial under the influence of pressure. Tissue sealants are liquids that convert to solid form at the tissue surface and in so doing form either an effective seal against fluid leakage or a bond between adjacent tissue surfaces. The nature of subsurface cracks formed under and around Vickers hardness indentations is often assumed rather than identified. Subsurface cracks in four engineering ceramics are revealed using a penetrant technique, and flaw dimensions are recorded. The resulting data are used to investigate several aspects of indentation cracking, such as crack shape, functional relationships between indentation load and flaw dimensions, and the performance of indentation fracture toughness equations. An R curve is constructed for each of the materials. © 1995 The Institute of Materials.
