O telemóvel tem-se transformado numa ferramenta essencial no nosso dia-a-dia, constantemente são lançadas novas tecnologias que potenciam o uso do telemóvel nas tarefas do nosso quotidiano. Atualmente a grande tendência passa por fazer o download de aplicações com o objetivo de obter mais e diferentes tipos de informação, existe o desejo de ler de forma simples e intuitiva o mundo que nos rodeia, como se cada elemento fosse um objeto sobre o qual conseguiremos obter informação através do telemóvel. A tecnologia Near Field Communication (NFC) ajuda a transformar este desejo ou necessidade numa realidade de simples alcance. Podemos anexar “identificadores” nos objetos e “ver” estes identificadores através do telemóvel recorrendo a aplicações que fazem a ponte com os sistemas que nos permitem obter mais informação, por exemplo, internet. O NFC especifica um padrão de comunicação de redes sem fios, que permite a transferência de dados entre dois dispositivos separados por uma distância máxima de 10cm. NFC foi desenhado para ser integrado em telemóveis, que podem comunicar com outros telemóveis equipados com NFC ou ler informação de cartões ou tags. A dissertação avalia as oportunidades que a tecnologia NFC oferece ao mundo das telecomunicações móveis, nomeadamente na realidade do operador Vodafone Portugal, principalmente numa relação Empresa - Cliente. Esta tecnologia reúne o interesse dos fabricantes dos telemóveis, dos operadores e de parceiros críticos que vão ajudar a potenciar o negócio, nomeadamente entidades bancárias e interbancárias. A tecnologia NFC permite utilizar o telemóvel como um cartão de crédito/debito, ticketing, ler informação de posters (Smart Poster) que despoletem navegação contextualizada para outras aplicações ou para a internet para obter mais informação ou concretizar compras, estes são alguns cenários identificados que mais valor o NFC consegue oferecer. A dissertação foca-se na avaliação técnica do NFC na área de Smart Posters e resulta na identificação num conjunto de novos cenários de utilização, que são especificados e complementados com o desenvolvimento de um protótipo.

Three commonly consumed and commercially valuable fish species (sardine, chub and horse mackerel) were collected from the Northeast and Eastern Central Atlantic Ocean in Portuguese waters during one year. Mercury, cadmium, lead and arsenic amounts were determined in muscles using graphite furnace and cold vapour atomic absorption spectrometry. Maximum mean levels of mercury (0.1715 ± 0.0857 mg/kg, ww) and arsenic (1.139 ± 0.350 mg/kg, ww) were detected in horse mackerel. The higher mean amounts of cadmium (0.0084 ± 0.0036 mg/kg, ww) and lead (0.0379 ± 0.0303 mg/kg, ww) were determined in chub mackerel and in sardine, respectively. Intra- and inter-specific variability of metals bioaccumulation was statistically assessed and species and length revealed to be the major influencing biometric factors, in particular for mercury and arsenic. Muscles present metal concentrations below the tolerable limits considered by European Commission Regulation and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations/World Health Organization (FAO/WHO). However, estimation of non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks by the target hazard quotient and target carcinogenic risk, established by the US Environmental Protection Agency, suggests that these species must be eaten in moderation due to possible hazard and carcinogenic risks derived from arsenic (in all analyzed species) and mercury ingestion (in horse and chub mackerel species).

A criação artística há muito que evoluí a par com desenvolvimento tecnológico. As novas tecnologias e as novas ferramentas que lhes estão associadas têm possibilitado não só novos meios de expressão, como também contribuído para uma alteração do próprio processo criativo. Desde a câmara obscura utilizada por Canaletto às imagens algorítmicas de George Legrady, muitos são os exemplos da influência das novas tecnologias na expressão e evolução da criação artística. Porém, a esta evolução estão também associadas transformações nos processos de trabalho, e no modo de colaboração entre as várias áreas de saber e suas diferentes especialidades. Os processos condicionam os resultados e no caso concreto do campo artístico representam importantes fatores potenciadores ou condicionadores da interdisciplinaridade e da transdisciplinaridade. Se, por um lado, as tecnologias digitais potenciam uma maior colaboração entre profissionais, por outro poderão ser responsáveis por uma maior fragmentação e hiperespecialização das diferentes fases do processo criativo. As plataformas de convergência, através da standartização de linguagens e ferramentas, induzem a criação artística para uma uniformização dos processos e para uma consequente uniformização dos resultados. A presente comunicação propõe uma reflexão, através da análise de diferentes estudos de caso, sobre a influência dos processos criativos e diferentes metodologias de projeto das artes audiovisuais na inter e transdisciplinaridade.

Considering vehicular transport as one of the most health‐relevant emission sources of urban air, and with aim to further understand its negative impact on human health, the objective of this work was to study its influence on levels of particulate‐bound PAHs and to evaluate associated health risks. The 16 PAHs considered by USEPA as priority pollutants, and dibenzo[a, l]pyrene associated with fine (PM2.5) and coarse (PM2.5–10) particles were determined. The samples were collected at one urban site, as well as at a reference place for comparison. The results showed that the air of the urban site was more seriously polluted than at the reference one, with total concentrations of 17 PAHs being 2240% and 640% higher for PM2.5 and PM2.5–10, respectively; vehicular traffic was the major emission source at the urban site. PAHs were predominantly associated with PM2.5 (83% to 94% of ΣPAHs at urban and reference site, respectively) with 5 rings PAHs being the most abundant groups of compounds at both sites. The risks associated with exposure to particulate PAHs were evaluated using the TEF approach. The estimated value of lifetime lung cancer risks exceeded the health‐based guideline levels, thus demonstrating that exposure to PM2.5‐bound PAHs at levels found at urban site might cause potential health risks. Furthermore, the results showed that evaluation of benzo[a] pyrene (regarded as a marker of the genotoxic and carcinogenic PAHs) alone would probably underestimate the carcinogenic potential of the studied PAH mixtures.

In previous works we have proposed a hybrid wired/wireless PROFIBUS solution where the interconnection between the heterogeneous media was accomplished through bridge-like devices with wireless stations being able to move between different wireless cells. Additionally, we had also proposed a worst-case timing analysis assuming that stations were stationary. In this paper we advance these previous works by proposing a worst-case timing analysis for the system’s message streams considering the effect of inter-cell mobility.

Recently, there have been a few research efforts towards extending the capabilities of fieldbus networks to encompass wireless support. In previous works we have proposed a hybrid wired/wireless PROFIBUS network solution where the interconnection between the heterogeneous communication media was accomplished through bridge-like interconnecting devices. The resulting networking architecture embraced a Multiple Logical Ring (MLR) approach, thus with multiple independent tokens, where the communication between different domains was supported by the Inter-Domain Protocol (IDP). The proposed architecture also supports mobility of stations between different wireless cells. To that hybrid wired/wireless networking architecture we have proposed a worst-case response timing analysis of the IDP, without considering inter-cell mobility (or handoff) of stations. In this paper, we advance that previous work by proposing a worst-case timing analysis of the mobility procedure.

The marriage of emerging information technologies with control technologies is a major driving force that, in the context of the factory-floor, is creating an enormous eagerness for extending the capabilities of currently available fieldbus networks to cover functionalities not considered up to a recent past. Providing wireless capabilities to such type of communication networks is a big share of that effort. The RFieldbus European project is just one example, where PROFIBUS was provided with suitable extensions for implementing hybrid wired/wireless communication systems. In RFieldbus, interoperability between wired and wireless components is achieved by the use specific intermediate networking systems operating as repeaters, thus creating a single logical ring (SLR) network. The main advantage of the SLR approach is that the effort for protocol extensions is not significant. However, a multiple logical ring (MLR) approach provides traffic and error isolation between different network segments. This concept was introduced in, where an approach for a bridge-based architecture was briefly outlined. This paper will focus on the details of the inter-Domain Protocol (IDP), which is responsible for handling transactions between different network domains (wired or wireless) running the PROFIBUS protocol.

This paper provides a comprehensive study on how to use Profibus fieldbus networks to support real-time industrial communications, that is, on how to ensure the transmission of real-time messages within a maximum bound time. Profibus is base on a simplified timed token (TT) protocol, which is a well-proved solution for real-time communication systems. However, Profibus differs with respect to the TT protocol, thus preventing the application of the usual TT protocol real-time analysis. In fact, real-time solutions for networks based on the TT protocol rely on the possibility of allocating specific bandwidth for the real-time traffic. This means that a minimum amount of time is always available, at each token visit, to transmit real-time messages, transversely, with the Profibus protocol, in the worst case, only one real-time message is processed per token visit. The authors propose two approaches to guarantee the real-time behavior of the Profibus protocol: (1) an unconstrained low-priority traffic profile; and (2) a constrained low-priority traffic profile. The proposed analysis shows that the first profile is a suitable approach for more responsive systems (tighter deadlines), while the second allows for increased nonreal-time traffic throughput

In this paper we address the P-NET Medium Access Control (MAC) ability to schedule traffic according to its real-time requirements, in order to support real-time distributed applications. We provide a schedulability analysis based on the P-NET standard, and propose mechanisms to overcome priority inversion problems resulting from the use of FIFO outgoing buffers

We consider reliable communications in Body Area Networks (BAN), where a set of nodes placed on human body are connected using wireless links. In order to keep the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) as low as possible for health safety reasons, these networks operate in low transmit power regime, which however, is known to be error prone. It has been observed that the fluctuations of the Received Signal Strength (RSS) at the nodes of a BAN on a moving person show certain regularities and that the magnitude of these fluctuations are significant (5 - 20 dB). In this paper, we present BANMAC, a MAC protocol that monitors and predicts the channel fluctuations and schedules transmissions opportunistically when the RSS is likely to be higher. The MAC protocol is capable of providing differentiated service and resolves co-channel interference in the event of multiple co-located BANs in a vicinity. We report the design and implementation details of BANMAC integrated with the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol stack. We present experimental data which show that the packet loss rate (PLR) of BANMAC is significantly lower as compared to that of the IEEE 802.15.4 MAC. For comparable PLR, the power consumption of BANMAC is also significantly lower than that of the IEEE 802.15.4. For co-located networks, the convergence time to find a conflict-free channel allocation was approximately 1 s for the centralized coordination mechanism and was approximately 4 s for the distributed coordination mechanism.

Real-time systems demand guaranteed and predictable run-time behaviour in order to ensure that no task has missed its deadline. Over the years we are witnessing an ever increasing demand for functionality enhancements in the embedded real-time systems. Along with the functionalities, the design itself grows more complex. Posed constraints, such as energy consumption, time, and space bounds, also require attention and proper handling. Additionally, efficient scheduling algorithms, as proven through analyses and simulations, often impose requirements that have significant run-time cost, specially in the context of multi-core systems. In order to further investigate the behaviour of such systems to quantify and compare these overheads involved, we have developed the SPARTS, a simulator of a generic embedded real- time device. The tasks in the simulator are described by externally visible parameters (e.g. minimum inter-arrival, sporadicity, WCET, BCET, etc.), rather than the code of the tasks. While our current implementation is primarily focused on our immediate needs in the area of power-aware scheduling, it is designed to be extensible to accommodate different task properties, scheduling algorithms and/or hardware models for the application in wide variety of simulations. We present an algorithm for bandwidth allocation for delay-sensitive traffic in multi-hop wireless sensor networks. Our solution considers both periodic as well as aperiodic real-time traffic in an unified manner. We also present a distributed MAC protocol that conforms to the bandwidth allocation and thus satisfies the latency requirements of realtime traffic. Additionally, the protocol provides best-effort service to non real-time traffic. We derive the utilization bounds of our MAC protocol.

Most current-generation Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) nodes are equipped with multiple sensors of various types, and therefore support for multi-tasking and multiple concurrent applications is becoming increasingly common. This trend has been fostering the design of WSNs allowing several concurrent users to deploy applications with dissimilar requirements. In this paper, we extend the advantages of a holistic programming scheme by designing a novel compiler-assisted scheduling approach (called REIS) able to identify and eliminate redundancies across applications. To achieve this useful high-level optimization, we model each user application as a linear sequence of executable instructions. We show how well-known string-matching algorithms such as the Longest Common Subsequence (LCS) and the Shortest Common Super-sequence (SCS) can be used to produce an optimal merged monolithic sequence of the deployed applications that takes into account embedded scheduling information. We show that our approach can help in achieving about 60% average energy savings in processor usage compared to the normal execution of concurrent applications.

Due to the growing complexity and adaptability requirements of real-time systems, which often exhibit unrestricted Quality of Service (QoS) inter-dependencies among supported services and user-imposed quality constraints, it is increasingly difficult to optimise the level of service of a dynamic task set within an useful and bounded time. This is even more difficult when intending to benefit from the full potential of an open distributed cooperating environment, where service characteristics are not known beforehand and tasks may be inter-dependent. This paper focuses on optimising a dynamic local set of inter-dependent tasks that can be executed at varying levels of QoS to achieve an efficient resource usage that is constantly adapted to the specific constraints of devices and users, nature of executing tasks and dynamically changing system conditions. Extensive simulations demonstrate that the proposed anytime algorithms are able to quickly find a good initial solution and effectively optimise the rate at which the quality of the current solution improves as the algorithms are given more time to run, with a minimum overhead when compared against their traditional versions.
