The present study investigated the relationship between psychometric intelligence and temporal resolution power (TRP) as simultaneously assessed by auditory and visual psychophysical timing tasks. In addition, three different theoretical models of the functional relationship between TRP and psychometric intelligence as assessed by means of the Adaptive Matrices Test (AMT) were developed. To test the validity of these models, structural equation modeling was applied. Empirical data supported a hierarchical model that assumed auditory and visual modality-specific temporal processing at a first level and amodal temporal processing at a second level. This second-order latent variable was substantially correlated with psychometric intelligence. Therefore, the relationship between psychometric intelligence and psychophysical timing performance can be explained best by a hierarchical model of temporal information processing.

We provide a novel search technique which uses a hierarchical model and a mutual information gain heuristic to efficiently prune the search space when localizing faces in images. We show exponential gains in computation over traditional sliding window approaches, while keeping similar performance levels.

In the literature, contrasting effects of plant species richness on the soil water balance are reported. Our objective was to assess the effects of plant species and functional richness and functional identity on soil water contents and water fluxes in the experimental grassland of the Jena Experiment. The Jena Experiment comprises 86 plots on which plant species richness (0, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, and 60) and functional group composition (zero to four functional groups: legumes, grasses, tall herbs, and small herbs) were manipulated in a factorial design. We recorded meteorological data and soil water contents of the 0·0–0·3 and 0·3–0·7 m soil layers and calculated actual evapotranspiration (ETa), downward flux (DF), and capillary rise with a soil water balance model for the period 2003–2007. Missing water contents were estimated with a Bayesian hierarchical model. Species richness decreased water contents in subsoil during wet soil conditions. Presence of tall herbs increased soil water contents in topsoil during dry conditions and decreased soil water contents in subsoil during wet conditions. Presence of grasses generally decreased water contents in topsoil, particularly during dry phases; increased ETa and decreased DF from topsoil; and decreased ETa from subsoil. Presence of legumes, in contrast, decreased ETa and increased DF from topsoil and increased ETa from subsoil. Species richness probably resulted in complementary water use. Specific functional groups likely affected the water balance via specific root traits (e.g. shallow dense roots of grasses and deep taproots of tall herbs) or specific shading intensity caused by functional group effects on vegetation cover. The alternative classification system for personality disorders in DSM-5 features a hierarchical model of maladaptive personality traits. This trait model comprises five broad trait domains and 25 specific trait facets that can be reliably assessed using the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5). Although there is a steadily growing literature on the validity of the PID-5, issues of temporal stability and situational influences on test scores are currently unexplored. We addressed these issues using a sample of 611 research participants who completed the PID-5 three times, with time intervals of two months. Latent state-trait (LST) analyses for each of the 25 PID-5 trait facets showed that, on average, 79.5% of the variance was due to stable traits (i.e., consistency), and 7.7% of the variance was due to situational factors (i.e., occasion specificity). Our findings suggest that the PID-5 trait facets predominantly capture individual differences that are stable across time.

Many studies have shown relationships between air pollution and the rate of hospital admissions for asthma. A few studies have controlled for age-specific effects by adding separate smoothing functions for each age group. However, it has not yet been reported whether air pollution effects are significantly different for different age groups. This lack of information is the motivation for this study, which tests the hypothesis that air pollution effects on asthmatic hospital admissions are significantly different by age groups. Each air pollutant's effect on asthmatic hospital admissions by age groups was estimated separately. In this study, daily time-series data for hospital admission rates from seven cities in Korea from June 1999 through 2003 were analyzed. The outcome variable, daily hospital admission rates for asthma, was related to five air pollutants which were used as the independent variables, namely particulate matter <10 micrometers (μm) in aerodynamic diameter (PM10), carbon monoxide (CO), ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and sulfur dioxide (SO2). Meteorological variables were considered as confounders. Admission data were divided into three age groups: children (<15 years of age), adults (ages 15-64), and elderly (≥ 65 years of age). The adult age group was considered to be the reference group for each city. In order to estimate age-specific air pollution effects, the analysis was separated into two stages. In the first stage, Generalized Additive Models (GAMs) with cubic spline for smoothing were applied to estimate the age-city-specific air pollution effects on asthmatic hospital admission rates by city and age group. In the second stage, the Bayesian Hierarchical Model with non-informative prior which has large variance was used to combine city-specific effects by age groups. The hypothesis test showed that the effects of PM10, CO and NO2 were significantly different by age groups. Assuming that the air pollution effect for adults is zero as a reference, age-specific air pollution effects were: -0.00154 (95% confidence interval(CI)= (-0.0030,-0.0001)) for children and 0.00126 (95% CI = (0.0006, 0.0019)) for the elderly for PM 10; -0.0195 (95% CI = (-0.0386,-0.0004)) for children for CO; and 0.00494 (95% CI = (0.0028, 0.0071)) for the elderly for NO2. Relative rates (RRs) were 1.008 (95% CI = (1.000-1.017)) in adults and 1.021 (95% CI = (1.012-1.030)) in the elderly for every 10 μg/m3 increase of PM10 , 1.019 (95% CI = (1.005-1.033)) in adults and 1.022 (95% CI = (1.012-1.033)) in the elderly for every 0.1 part per million (ppm) increase of CO; 1.006 (95%CI = (1.002-1.009)) and 1.019 (95%CI = (1.007-1.032)) in the elderly for every 1 part per billion (ppb) increase of NO2 and SO2, respectively. Asthma hospital admissions were significantly increased for PM10 and CO in adults, and for PM10, CO, NO2 and SO2 in the elderly.^

Many public health agencies and researchers are interested in comparing hospital outcomes, for example, morbidity, mortality, and hospitalization across areas and hospitals. However, since there is variation of rates in clinical trials among hospitals because of several biases, we are interested in controlling for the bias and assessing real differences in clinical practices. In this study, we compared the variations between hospitals in rates of severe Intraventricular Haemorrhage (IVH) infant using Frequentist statistical approach vs. Bayesian hierarchical model through simulation study. The template data set for simulation study was included the number of severe IVH infants of 24 intensive care units in Australian and New Zealand Neonatal Network from 1995 to 1997 in severe IVH rate in preterm babies. We evaluated the rates of severe IVH for 24 hospitals with two hierarchical models in Bayesian approach comparing their performances with the shrunken rates in Frequentist method. Gamma-Poisson (BGP) and Beta-Binomial (BBB) were introduced into Bayesian model and the shrunken estimator of Gamma-Poisson (FGP) hierarchical model using maximum likelihood method were calculated as Frequentist approach. To simulate data, the total number of infants in each hospital was kept and we analyzed the simulated data for both Bayesian and Frequentist models with two true parameters for severe IVH rate. One was the observed rate and the other was the expected severe IVH rate by adjusting for five predictors variables for the template data. The bias in the rate of severe IVH infant estimated by both models showed that Bayesian models gave less variable estimates than Frequentist model. We also discussed and compared the results from three models to examine the variation in rate of severe IVH by 20th centile rates and avoidable number of severe IVH cases. ^

Providing accurate maps of coral reefs where the spatial scale and labels of the mapped features correspond to map units appropriate for examining biological and geomorphic structures and processes is a major challenge for remote sensing. The objective of this work is to assess the accuracy and relevance of the process used to derive geomorphic zone and benthic community zone maps for three western Pacific coral reefs produced from multi-scale, object-based image analysis (OBIA) of high-spatial-resolution multi-spectral images, guided by field survey data. Three Quickbird-2 multi-spectral data sets from reefs in Australia, Palau and Fiji and georeferenced field photographs were used in a multi-scale segmentation and object-based image classification to map geomorphic zones and benthic community zones. A per-pixel approach was also tested for mapping benthic community zones. Validation of the maps and comparison to past approaches indicated the multi-scale OBIA process enabled field data, operator field experience and a conceptual hierarchical model of the coral reef environment to be linked to provide output maps at geomorphic zone and benthic community scales on coral reefs. The OBIA mapping accuracies were comparable with previously published work using other methods; however, the classes mapped were matched to a predetermined set of features on the reef.

This paper deals with the detection and tracking of an unknown number of targets using a Bayesian hierarchical model with target labels. To approximate the posterior probability density function, we develop a two-layer particle filter. One deals with track initiation, and the other with track maintenance. In addition, the parallel partition method is proposed to sample the states of the surviving targets.

La mayor parte de los entornos diseñados por el hombre presentan características geométricas específicas. En ellos es frecuente encontrar formas poligonales, rectangulares, circulares . . . con una serie de relaciones típicas entre distintos elementos del entorno. Introducir este tipo de conocimiento en el proceso de construcción de mapas de un robot móvil puede mejorar notablemente la calidad y la precisión de los mapas resultantes. También puede hacerlos más útiles de cara a un razonamiento de más alto nivel. Cuando la construcción de mapas se formula en un marco probabilístico Bayesiano, una especificación completa del problema requiere considerar cierta información a priori sobre el tipo de entorno. El conocimiento previo puede aplicarse de varias maneras, en esta tesis se presentan dos marcos diferentes: uno basado en el uso de primitivas geométricas y otro que emplea un método de representación cercano al espacio de las medidas brutas. Un enfoque basado en características geométricas supone implícitamente imponer un cierto modelo a priori para el entorno. En este sentido, el desarrollo de una solución al problema SLAM mediante la optimización de un grafo de características geométricas constituye un primer paso hacia nuevos métodos de construcción de mapas en entornos estructurados. En el primero de los dos marcos propuestos, el sistema deduce la información a priori a aplicar en cada caso en base a una extensa colección de posibles modelos geométricos genéricos, siguiendo un método de Maximización de la Esperanza para hallar la estructura y el mapa más probables. La representación de la estructura del entorno se basa en un enfoque jerárquico, con diferentes niveles de abstracción para los distintos elementos geométricos que puedan describirlo. Se llevaron a cabo diversos experimentos para mostrar la versatilidad y el buen funcionamiento del método propuesto. En el segundo marco, el usuario puede definir diferentes modelos de estructura para el entorno mediante grupos de restricciones y energías locales entre puntos vecinos de un conjunto de datos del mismo. El grupo de restricciones que se aplica a cada grupo de puntos depende de la topología, que es inferida por el propio sistema. De este modo, se pueden incorporar nuevos modelos genéricos de estructura para el entorno con gran flexibilidad y facilidad. Se realizaron distintos experimentos para demostrar la flexibilidad y los buenos resultados del enfoque propuesto. Abstract Most human designed environments present specific geometrical characteristics. In them, it is easy to find polygonal, rectangular and circular shapes, with a series of typical relations between different elements of the environment. Introducing this kind of knowledge in the mapping process of mobile robots can notably improve the quality and accuracy of the resulting maps. It can also make them more suitable for higher level reasoning applications. When mapping is formulated in a Bayesian probabilistic framework, a complete specification of the problem requires considering a prior for the environment. The prior over the structure of the environment can be applied in several ways; this dissertation presents two different frameworks, one using a feature based approach and another one employing a dense representation close to the measurements space. A feature based approach implicitly imposes a prior for the environment. In this sense, feature based graph SLAM was a first step towards a new mapping solution for structured scenarios. In the first framework, the prior is inferred by the system from a wide collection of feature based priors, following an Expectation-Maximization approach to obtain the most probable structure and the most probable map. The representation of the structure of the environment is based on a hierarchical model with different levels of abstraction for the geometrical elements describing it. Various experiments were conducted to show the versatility and the good performance of the proposed method. In the second framework, different priors can be defined by the user as sets of local constraints and energies for consecutive points in a range scan from a given environment. The set of constraints applied to each group of points depends on the topology, which is inferred by the system. This way, flexible and generic priors can be incorporated very easily. Several tests were carried out to demonstrate the flexibility and the good results of the proposed approach.

This thesis presents a task-oriented approach to telemanipulation for maintenance in large scientific facilities, with specific focus on the particle accelerator facilities at European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland and GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research (GSI) in Darmstadt, Germany. It examines how telemanipulation can be used in these facilities and reviews how this differs from the representation of telemanipulation tasks within the literature. It provides methods to assess and compare telemanipulation procedures as well a test suite to compare telemanipulators themselves from a dexterity perspective. It presents a formalisation of telemanipulation procedures into a hierarchical model which can be then used as a basis to aid maintenance engineers in assessing tasks for telemanipulation, and as the basis for future research. The model introduces a new concept of Elemental Actions as the building block of telemanipulation movements and incorporates the dependent factors for procedures at a higher level of abstraction. In order to gain insight into realistic tasks performed by telemanipulation systems within both industrial and research environments a survey of teleoperation experts is presented. Analysis of the responses is performed from which it is concluded that there is a need within the robotics community for physical benchmarking tests which are geared towards evaluating the dexterity of telemanipulators for comparison of their dexterous abilities. A three stage test suite is presented which is designed to allow maintenance engineers to assess different telemanipulators for their dexterity. This incorporates general characteristics of the system, a method to compare kinematic reachability of multiple telemanipulators and physical test setups to assess dexterity from a both a qualitative perspective and measurably by using performance metrics. Finally, experimental results are provided for the application of the proposed test suite onto two telemanipulation systems, one from a research setting and the other within CERN. It describes the procedure performed and discusses comparisons between the two systems, as well as providing input from the expert operator of the CERN system.

Introdução: O Programa Bolsa Família é a principal estratégia brasileira para amenizar a pobreza e vulnerabilidade social, com diferentes impactos na vida dos beneficiários. O aumento da renda, em função do benefício, poderia trazer resultados positivos na alimentação, uma vez que possibilitam uma maior diversidade da dieta. Porém, poderia trazer resultados negativos como a ingestão excessiva de energia e consequente aumento da adiposidade. As avaliações dos impactos do programa em termos de obesidade e massa gorda de crianças são inexistentes. Objetivo: Avaliar o impacto do Programa Bolsa Família no estado nutricional (IMC/idade) e na composição corporal aos 6 anos de idade entre as crianças da Coorte de Nascimentos de Pelotas (RS), 2004. Métodos: Os dados foram provenientes da integração dos bancos da Coorte de Nascimentos de Pelotas de 2004 e do Cadastro Único do Governo Federal. Foi realizada análise descritiva da cobertura e focalização do programa, com informações do nascimento e dos 6 anos de idade (n=4231). Considerou-se focalização o percentual de elegíveis entre o total de beneficiários e cobertura o percentual de famílias elegíveis que são beneficiárias do programa. Nos modelos de impacto (n=3446), as exposições principais foram o recebimento do benefício: beneficiário em 2010, no período de 2004-2010; o valor médio mensal recebido e o tempo de recebimento. Foram gerados modelos de regressão linear para os desfechos score-Z do índice de massa corporal por idade (IMC/I), percentual e índice de massa gorda (IMG), e percentual e índice de massa livre de gordura (IMLG); e de Poisson, com ajuste robusto, para o desfecho obesidade (score-Z IMC/I 2), todos estratificados por sexo. As informações antropométricas e de composição corporal (BOD POD) foram obtidas do acompanhamento aos 6-7 anos de idade. Potenciais fatores de confusão foram identificados por modelo hierárquico e por um diagrama causal (DAG). Para analisar os impactos foram usadas como medidas de efeito a diferença de médias na regressão linear múltipla (IMC/I, por cento MG, IMG, por cento MLG e IMLG, variáveis contínuas) e a razão de prevalência (obesidade, variável binária). Para permanecer no modelo, considerou-se valor p0,20. A análise dos dados foi realizada por meio do software STATA. Resultados: Entre 2004-2010, a proporção de famílias beneficiárias na coorte aumentou (11 por cento para 34 por cento ) enquanto, de acordo com a renda familiar, a proporção de famílias elegíveis diminui (29 por cento para 16 por cento ). No mesmo período, a cobertura do programa aumentou tanto pela renda familiar quanto pelo IEN. Já a focalização caiu de 78 por cento para 32 por cento de acordo com a renda familiar e, de acordo com o IEN, manteve-se em 37 por cento . A média (não ajustada) de IMC e de MG dos não beneficiários foi superior a dos não beneficiários tanto em meninos quanto em meninas. Meninos do 3º tercil de valor per capita recebido e meninas com menos de 7 meses de benefício em 2010 tiveram IMC maior do que, respectivamente, aqueles dos demais tercis e daquelas com mais de 7 meses de benefício em 2010; esse padrão foi semelhante para obesidade. Meninas não beneficiárias tiveram MG maior do que as beneficiárias e superior também aos meninos, independente de ser beneficiário ou não. Em relação à MLG observou-se um comportamento contrário, no qual meninas beneficiárias tiveram maior MLG, quando comparadas com meninas não beneficiárias e, meninos quando comparados com meninas. Nos modelos de regressão ajustados, não houve diferença significativa entre beneficiários e não beneficiários em nenhum desfecho. Conclusões: De acordo com os resultados, as famílias que receberam maiores valores per capita parecem incluir crianças com maior média de IMC. O programa, nessa análise, parece não ter impacto sobre a composição corporal das crianças, nem em termos de massa gorda, tampouco em termos de massa livre de gordura.

We are concerned with the problem of image segmentation in which each pixel is assigned to one of a predefined finite number of classes. In Bayesian image analysis, this requires fusing together local predictions for the class labels with a prior model of segmentations. Markov Random Fields (MRFs) have been used to incorporate some of this prior knowledge, but this not entirely satisfactory as inference in MRFs is NP-hard. The multiscale quadtree model of Bouman and Shapiro (1994) is an attractive alternative, as this is a tree-structured belief network in which inference can be carried out in linear time (Pearl 1988). It is an hierarchical model where the bottom-level nodes are pixels, and higher levels correspond to downsampled versions of the image. The conditional-probability tables (CPTs) in the belief network encode the knowledge of how the levels interact. In this paper we discuss two methods of learning the CPTs given training data, using (a) maximum likelihood and the EM algorithm and (b) emphconditional maximum likelihood (CML). Segmentations obtained using networks trained by CML show a statistically-significant improvement in performance on synthetic images. We also demonstrate the methods on a real-world outdoor-scene segmentation task.

Site selection is a key activity for quarry expansion to support cement production, and is governed by factors such as resource availability, logistics, costs, and socio-economic-environmental factors. Adequate consideration of all the factors facilitates both industrial productivity and sustainable economic growth. This study illustrates the site selection process that was undertaken for the expansion of limestone quarry operations to support cement production in Barbados. First, alternate sites with adequate resources to support a 25-year development horizon were identified. Second, technical and socio-economic-environmental factors were then identified. Third, a database was developed for each site with respect to each factor. Fourth, a hierarchical model in analytic hierarchy process (AHP) framework was then developed. Fifth, the relative ranking of the alternate sites was then derived through pair wise comparison in all the levels and through subsequent synthesizing of the results across the hierarchy through computer software (Expert Choice). The study reveals that an integrated framework using the AHP can help select a site for the quarry expansion project in Barbados.

Decision making and technical decision analysis demand computer-aided techniques and therefore more and more support by formal techniques. In recent years fuzzy decision analysis and related techniques gained importance as an efficient method for planning and optimization applications in fields like production planning, financial and economical modeling and forecasting or classification. It is also known, that the hierarchical modeling of the situation is one of the most popular modeling method. It is shown, how to use the fuzzy hierarchical model in complex with other methods of Multiple Criteria Decision Making. We propose a novel approach to overcome the inherent limitations of Hierarchical Methods by exploiting multiple criteria decision making.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the distribution of malocclusion and its associated factors in Brazilian adolescents. METHODS: Data from 7,328 subjects aged 12 years and 5,445 adolescents aged 15-19 years were analyzed. The adolescents took part in the Brazilian Oral Health Survey (SBBrasil 2010). The outcome was severe malocclusion according to the dental aesthetic index. The independent variables were sex, skin color, monthly household income, possessions, number of individuals in the household, untreated dental caries, missing teeth and dental appointments or lack thereof, frequency, and reason. Logistical regression analysis was carried out, considering the complex sampling cluster design, based on a hierarchical model. RESULTS: The prevalence of severe malocclusion was 6.5% and 9.1% in the 12-year-olds and the 15-19-year-olds, respectively. After adjustment, those with lighter- skinned black or black skin were 1.59 (95%CI 1.08;2.34) times more likely to present the outcome compared with those with white skin. The loss of one or more first molars increased 2.66 (95%CI 1.26;5.63) the chance to present severe malocclusion by the age of 12. Adolescents aged 15-19 whose household income was below R$ 1,500.00 (OR 2.69 [95%CI 1.62; 4.47]) and those who had seen a dentist for treatment (OR 2.59 [95%CI 2.55;4.34]) had the greatest chance of having severe malocclusion compared with those with higher incomes and those who visited the dentist for prevention.
