The Gibbs energies of formation of MPt5 (MNd, Dy, Ho, Er) intermetallic compounds were determined in the temperature range 900–1100 K using the solid state cell Ta,M+MF3¦CaF2¦MPt5+Pt+MF3,Ta For M ≡ Sm, a mixture of Gd + GdF3 was used as the reference electrode. In the case of Eu, a mixture of Eu + EuF2 served as the reference electrode. The trifluorides of Sm and Eu are not stable in equilibrium with the metal. The fluoride phase coexisting with a SmPt5 + Pt mixture is SmF3, whereas EuF2 is the equilibrium phase in contact with EuPt5 + Pt. All the MPt5 compounds studied (except EuPt5) exhibit similar stability. Europium is divalent in the pure metal and trivalent in EuPt5. The energy required for the promotion of divalent Eu to the trivalent state accounts for the less negative Gibbs energy of formation of EuPt5. The enthalpies of formation of all the MPt5 compounds obtained in this study are in good agreement with Miedema's model.

The standard Gibbs' free energies of formation of compounds of type Cu2L%05 (Ln = Tb,Dy,Er,Yb) were measured using the solid state cell in the temperature range of 970 to 1323 K For formation of Cu2L?O5 compounds from their binary component oxides according to the reaction 2 CUO (s) + L%03 (s) -, Cu,,L%05 (s),the Gibbs' free energy changes can be represented by the following equations:AGO = 13 080 - 13.70 'I" (+80) J mol-' (Ln = Tb)AGq = 11 480 - 13.51 T (260) J mol-I (Ln = Dy)AGO = 10 750 - 13.99 T (260) J mol-I (Ln = Er)AGO = 9 920 - 13.90 T (260) J mol-' (Ln = Yb) Since formation of the compounds is endothermic, the compounds become thermodynamically unstable with respect to their component oxides below 955 K for Cu2Tb205, 850 K for Cu2Dy205, 768 K for Cu2Er205 and 714 K for Cu2Yb2OS When the oxygen partial pressure over Cu2L%05 is lowered, they decompose according to the scheme, 2 CU,L%O, (s) -r 2 L%03 (s) +2 cu20 (s) + 02(g)The equilibrium chemical potentials of oxygen corresponding to the dissociation reactions are computed from the emf data and auxiliary information on Cu20 and CuO. The computed decomposition temperatures at an oxygen partial pressure of 5.0 x ld Pa are compared with those obtained directly from combined thermogravimetric (TGA) and differential thermal analyses (DTA).The free energy, enthalpy and entropy of formation of Cu2Ln205 compounds show systematic variation with the ionic radius of the trivalent lanthanide ion. The trends obtained in this study are compared with information available in the literature. The staZbility of Cu2Ln205 compounds increases with the decrease in ionic radii of the ~ n ion~. +

Pure stoichiometric MgRh(2)O(4) could not be prepared by solid state reaction from an equimolar mixture of MgO and Rh(2)O(3) in air. The spinel phase formed always contained excess of Mg and traces of Rh or Rh(2)O(3). The spinel phase can be considered as a solid solution of Mg(2)RhO(4) in MgRh(2)O(4). The compositions of the spinel solid solution in equilibrium with different phases in the ternary system Mg-Rh-O were determined by electron probe microanalysis. The oxygen potential established by the equilibrium between Rh + MgO + Mg(1+x)Rh(2-x)O(4) was measured as a function of temperature using a solid-state cell incorporating yttria-stabilized zirconia as an electrolyte and pure oxygen at 0.1 MPa as the reference electrode. To avoid polarization of the working electrode during the measurements, an improved design of the cell with a buffer electrode was used. The standard Gibbs energies of formation of MgRh(2)O(4) and Mg(2)RhO(4) were deduced from the measured electromotive force (e.m.f.) by invoking a model for the spinel solid solution. The parameters of the model were optimized using the measured composition of the spinel solid solution in different phase fields and imposed oxygen partial pressures. The results can be summarized by the equations: MgO + beta -Rh(2)O(3) -> MgRh(2)O(4); Delta G degrees (+ 1010)/J mol(-1) = -32239 + 7.534T; 2MgO + RhO(2) -> Mg(2)RhO(4); Delta G degrees(+/- 1270)/J mol(-1) = 36427 -4.163T; Delta G(M)/J mol(-1) = 2RT(xInx + (1-x)In(1-x)) + 4650x(1-x), where Delta G degrees is the standard Gibbs free energy change for the reaction and G(M) is the free energy of mixing of the spinel solid solution Mg(1+x)Rh(2-x)O(4). Because of its essential nature, each step of transcription, viz., initiation, elongation, and termination, is subjected to elaborate regulation. A number of transcription factors modulate the rates of transcription at these different steps, and several inhibitors shut down the process. Many modulators, including small molecules and proteinaceous inhibitors, bind the RNA polymerase (RNAP) secondary channel to control transcription. We describe here the first small protein inhibitor of transcription in Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Rv3788 is a homolog of the Gre factors that binds near the secondary channel of RNAP to inhibit transcription. The factor also affected the action of guanosine pentaphosphate (pppGpp) on transcription and abrogated Gre action, indicating its function in the modulation of the catalytic center of RNAP. Although it has a Gre factor-like domain organization with the conserved acidic residues in the N terminus and retains interaction with RNAP, the factor did not show any transcript cleavage stimulatory activity. Unlike Rv3788, another Gre homolog from Mycobacterium smegmatis, MSMEG_6292 did not exhibit transcription-inhibitory activities, hinting at the importance of the former in influencing the lifestyle of M. tuberculosis.

HgCdTe mid wave infrared (MWIR) n(+)/nu/p(+) homo-junction photodiodes with planar architecture are designed, fabricated, and measured at room temperature. An improved analytical I-V model is reported by incorporating trap assisted tunneling and electric field enhanced Shockley-Read-Hall generation recombination process due to dislocations. Tunneling currents are fitted before and after the Auger suppression of carriers with energy level of trap (E-t), trap density (N-t), and the doping concentrations of n(+) and nu regions as fitting parameters. Values of E-t and N-t are determined as 0.79 E-g and similar to 9 x 10(14) cm(-3), respectively, in all cases. Doping concentration of nu region was found to exhibit nonequilibrium depletion from a value of 2 x 10(16) to 4 x 10(15) cm(-3) for n(+) doping of 2 x 10(17) cm(-3). Pronounced negative differential resistance is observed in the homo-junction HgCdTe diodes. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. [doi:10.1063/1.3682483]

Four new cocrystals of a well studied active pharmaceutical ingredient (API), namely, pyrazinecarboxamide (PZA), with various monocarboxylic acids equipped with additional hydrogen bonding sites such as vanillic acid (VA), gallic acid (GA), 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid (1HNA), and indole-2-carboxylic acid (I2CA) have been successfully prepared and characterized by FTIR, H-1 NMR, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction (SXRD and PXRD, respectively) techniques. In the majority of the cases, preferential occurrence amide amide and acid acid homosynthons has been observed. Since the heterosynthon is energetically preferred to homosynthon, such unusual occurrence of homosynthon in these cocrystals is intriguing.

Ab initio GW calculations are a standard method for computing the spectroscopic properties of many materials. The most computationally expensive part in conventional implementations of the method is the generation and summation over the large number of empty orbitals required to converge the electron self-energy. We propose a scheme to reduce the summation over empty states by the use of a modified static remainder approximation, which is simple to implement and yields accurate self-energies for both bulk and molecular systems requiring a small fraction of the typical number of empty orbitals.

First principles calculations were done to evaluate the lattice parameter, cohesive energy and stacking fault energies of ordered gamma' (Ll(2)) precipitates in superalloys as a function of composition. It was found that addition of Ti and Ta lead to an increase in lattice parameter and decrease in cohesive energy, while Ni antisites had the opposite effect. Ta and Ti addition to stoichiometric Ni3Al resulted in an initial increase in the energies of APB((111)), CSF(111), APB((001)) and SISF(111). However, at higher concentrations, the fault energies decreased. Addition of Ni antisites decreased the energy of all four faults monotonically. A model based on nearest neighbor bonding was used for Ni-3(Al, Ta), Ni-3(Al, Ti) and Ni-3(Al, Ni) pseudo-binary systems and extended to pseudo- ternary Ni-3(Al, Ta, Ni) and Ni-3(Al, Ti, Ni) systems. Recipes were developed for predicting lattice parameters, cohesive energies and fault energies in pseudo- ternary systems on the basis of coefficients derived from simpler pseudobinary systems. The model predictions were found to be in good agreement with first principles calculations for lattice parameters, cohesive energies, and energies of APB((111)) and CSF(111).

The most common valencies associated with K and O atoms are 1+ and 2-. As a result, one expects K2O to be the oxide of potassium which is the most stable with respect to its constituents. Calculating the formation energy within electronic structure calculations using hybrid functionals, one finds that K2O2 has the largest formation energy, implying the largest stability of this oxide of potassium with respect to its constituents. This is traced to the presence of oxygen dimers in the K2O2 structure which interact strongly resulting in a larger formation energy compared to the more ionic K2O.

Ferrocenyl platinum(II) complexes (1-3), viz. Pt(Fc-tpy)Cl]Cl (1), Pt(Fc-tpy)(NPC)]Cl (2, HNPC = N-propargyl carbazole) and Pt(Fc-bpa)Cl]Cl (3), were prepared, characterized and their anti-proliferative properties in visible light in human keratinocyte (HaCaT) cell lines have been studied. Pt(Ph-tpy)Cl]Cl (4) was prepared and used as a control. Complexes 1 and 3, structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography, show distorted square-planar geometry for the platinum(II) centre. Complexes 1 and 2 having the Fc-tpy ligand showed an intense absorption band at similar to 590 nm. The ferrocenyl complexes are redox active showing the Fc(+)-Fc couple near 0.6 V vs. SCE in DMF-0.1 M tetrabutylammonium perchlorate (TBAP). Complexes 1-3 showed external binding to calf thymus DNA. Both 1 and 2 showed remarkable photocytotoxicity in HaCaT cell lines giving respective IC50 values of 9.8 and 12.0 mu M in visible light of 400-700 nm with low dark toxicity (IC50 > 60 mu M). Fluorescent imaging studies showed the spread of the complexes throughout the cell localising both in cytoplasm and the nucleus. The ferrocenyl complexes triggered apoptosis on light exposure as evidenced from the Annexin V-FITC/PI and DNA ladder formation assays. Spectral studies revealed the formation of ferrocenium ions upon photo-irradiation generating cytotoxic hydroxyl radicals via a Fenton type mechanism. The results are rationalized from a TDDFT study that shows involvement of ferrocene and the platinum coordinated terpyridine moiety as respective HOMO and LUMO.

A new series of luminescent 4-(2-(4-alkoxyphenyl)-6-methoxypyridin-4-yl) benzonitriles containing three ring systems, viz. methoxy pyridine, benzonitrile and alkoxy benzene with variable alkoxy chain length, with bent-core structures were synthesized as potential mesogens and characterized by spectral techniques. Their liquid crystalline behavior was investigated by polarizing optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and variable temperature powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) measurements. The study reveals that compounds with shorter chain lengths i.e. m = 4] exclusively exhibit the nematic phase while compounds with longer chain lengths i.e. m = 6-14 (only even)] show predominantly the orthorhombic columnar phase. Single crystal X-ray analysis of 4-(2-(4-butyloxy/octyloxyphenyl)-6-methoxypyridin-4-yl) benzonitriles reveals that they possess slightly non-planar unsymmetrical bent structures and their molecular packing consists of nonconventional H-bond interactions; it also explains the observed liquid crystalline phase. An optical study indicates that the title compounds are good blue emitting materials showing absorption and emission bands in the range 335-345 nm and 415-460 nm, respectively. An electrochemical study of 4-(2-(4-octyloxyphenyl)-6-methoxypyridin-4-yl) benzonitrile shows a band gap of 1.89 eV with HOMO and LUMO energy levels of -5.06 and -3.17 eV, respectively. Also, density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm its optimized geometry, electronic absorption and frontier molecular orbital distributions.

Donor-acceptor (D-A) conjugated polymers have attracted a good deal of attention in recent years. In D-A systems, the introduction of electron withdrawing groups reduces E-g by lowering the LUMO levels whereas, the introduction of electron donating groups reduces E-g by raising the HOMO levels. Also, conjugated polymers with desired HOMO and LUMO energy levels could be obtained by the proper selection of donor and acceptor units. Because of this reason, D-A conjugated polymers are emerging as promising materials particularly for polymer light emitting diodes (PLEDs) and polymer solar cells (PSCs). We report the design and synthesis of four new narrow band gap donor-acceptor (D-A) conjugated polymers, PTCNN, PTCNF, PTCNV and PTCNO, containing electron donating 3,4-didodecyloxythiophene and electron accepting cyanovinylene units. The effects of further addition of electron donating and electron withdrawing groups to the repeating unit of a D-A conjugated polymer (PTCNN) on its optical and electrochemical properties are discussed. The studies revealed that the nature of D and A units as well as the extent of alternate D-A structure influences the optical and the electrochemical properties of the polymers. All the polymers are thermally stable up to a temperature of 300 degrees C under nitrogen atmosphere. The electrochemical studies revealed that the polymers possess low-lying HOMO energy levels and low-lying LUMO energy levels. In the UV-Vis absorption study, the polymer films displayed broad absorption in the wavelength region of 400-700 nm. The polymers exhibited low optical band gaps in the range 1.70 - 1.77 eV.

Using Generalized Gradient Approximation (GGA) and meta-GGA density functional methods, structures, binding energies and harmonic vibrational frequencies for the clusters O-4(+), O-6(+), O-8(+) and O-10(+) have been calculated. The stable structures of O-4(+), O-6(+), O-8(+) and O-10(+) have point groups D-2h, D-3h, D-4h, and D-5h optimized on the quartet, sextet, octet and dectet potential energy surfaces, respectively. Rectangular (D-2h) O-4(+) has been found to be more stable compared to trans-planar (C-2h) on the quartet potential energy surface. Cyclic structure (D-3h) of CA cluster ion has been calculated to be more stable than other structures. Binding energy (B.E.) of the cyclic O-6(+) is in good agreement with experimental measurement. The zero-point corrected B.E. of O-8(+) with D4h symmetry on the octet potential energy surface and zero-point corrected B.E. of O-10(+) with D-5h symmetry on the dectet potential energy surface are also in good agreement with experimental values. The B.E. value for O-4(+) is close to the experimental value when single point energy is calculated by Brueckner coupled-cluster method, BD(T). (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
